    I've slept directly on a carpeted hardwood floor for the past 25 years. I love the firmness, which, I believe, helped nearly eliminate my lower back issues and has given me a deeper, more satisfying sleep. From time-to-time, I'll switch to a Lazy Boy in the middle of the night. I don't use a blanket and have used two firm, rectangular throw pillows in place of pillows. In the morning, I leave no trace behind, and the space is used for other activities.

    I highly recommend using this with a tatami mat underneath! It stops the mattress from getting damp and risking mold because the tatami at absorbs the moisture and keeps it dry. Also it’s waayyy more comfy with the mat :) and it’s rly good for your back! I had the futon+tatami mat when I moved to Seattle for 6 months! I miss it

    Man! I did this a little over two years ago. It started bc I think my mattress was too old and my back & hips were in so much pain. While I wouldn’t recommend it for everyone, I will say for me in 6 months my back pain went away and my posture started to improve. 🤷‍♀️ My family thought I was crazy… I had family come into town and the people who slept on it said it was actually comfortable. 😂 “Don’t sound so shocked!” 😂 I get it though it’s very out of the norm. I personally get a kick out of doing things unconventionally.😌

      @andreaholcock8992 "floor bed" the key word is bed. A bed is a frame. So the mattress would be on the ground instead of a bed, which is where the cushioning you're talking about comes in. But also, I thought sleeping on hard surfaces is better for your back? How do you usually sleep?

  • @remka2000
    @remka2000 Рік тому +29

    I have the opposite problem 😂 . We live in an old (for Japan) japanese house with several tatami rooms (wa-shitsu) and we do everything to cover them with rugs or vinyl flooring to avoid cat scratching, chairs marks, coffee spills etc.
    Tatami rooms in Japan tend to have a giant oshi-ire (cupboard) that’s super deep so you can fold the futon during the day time. That’s also great for when the step family is visiting, we have space for everyone to sleep.
    You also want to hang the futons outside in a sunny spot to kill acariens from time to time (fairly normal here, but maybe not super convenient in a small flat in a big western city haha)

    I threw out my mattress in 2020 and ever since have been sleeping the floor. I’ve had variations of my floor sleeping ranging from one comforter under me and a few blankets to one sateen sheet under me with a large comforter on top. Now my latest variation which is the best one thus far is nothing under me with an elevation leg pillow to help with pressure ulcers on my heels because oh man I was getting them like crazy every night floor sleeping. And also I have a weighted blanket on top of me to make me feel secure. Then I’ll add a good quality wool blanket for the winter months. I’ll tell ya my back and my whole body feel a lot more stabilized through the day along with my posture being is upright. I recently bought a bed for the times when I do crave a bed but I end up tossing and turning. But when I sleep on the floor I stick to one position, on my back. Maybe a little side sleeping but it’s nothing like the bed where I constantly toss and turn every minute. I’m definitely enjoying floor sleeping for now. I don’t know if I’ll need floor sleeping as a 80 year old but for now I like it.

  • @TsukiNY

    I got to start sleeping on the floor because my son broke my bed. So I just put the mattress on the floor. After a month I changed the expensive 20cm mattress to a 10cm cheapest IKEA one that we had at home by chance...
    After a week I told my husband that I am never gonna sleep on a bed again and I wait for him to sleep on the floor one day😁
    Backpain is gone. The flat floor supports your bones so your muscles do not need to balance every move you make while you have the little of softness and isolation of the mattress.
    I do not feel in the morning like the bed has soaked me in during the night, may it be comfortable according to all standards. Just get up.
    Plus all the pros (and cons) mentioned in the video.
    Also dreaming of a tatami and real foldable futon. I am sure I will get one one day.
    Have a nice day!💕

    The thing about bedrooms is, they are meant for sleeping. Using it as a workspace adds stress in the room. I know you may not have another place for it, but the living area might be a better spot for it if possible.
    Without a tatami mat, that essential oil diffuser is a bad idea because of mold.
    Overall though, I think it's great and much better for our bodies to sleep on a harder surface. Traditional American bedding is essentially an orthotic that our bodies conform to causing all sorts of misalignments of the joints which leads to pain and arthritic conditions. Many cultures around the world sleep on the ground or wooden platforms and they don't suffer from back problems etc.

    2 yrs ago I started sleeping in my hammock. I like the firmness of a comfy pad on floor but toss & turn a lot & hate getting up. It was great when I was younger but now I hate crawling up from a pad if camping I must use a cot or prefer a hammock.
    In my room yes!!!! I love the extra space & clean area seeing under it. I have a hippie room. Baskets of wicker, macrame plant hangers, potted plants, candles, a love seat. All open space.
    Also, I took the doors off my closet. It is organized w/ a storage cedar chest under & hat boxes. I enjoy seeing my organized things.

  • @gungnir3926
    @gungnir3926 23 дні тому

    The objectively best way to sleep and use up as little space as possible is mixing both. Place a thin mattress/futon on top of a big storage container. Use this space to place basically most of your stuff and have a raised sleeping position at from first on the floor. The only other option which is even remotely comparable in efficiency is to place a rollable futon in the middle of the room and ALWAYS put it away after sleeping to use the floor as yoga, workout, walking area. You only need those three things: sleep, workout/movement and storage. And horizontal space is Carly more valuable than vertical because it can serve all three purposes, where vertical only can storage. Therefore it is vital that the horizontal space either be multi functional, OR be only used for one thing at a time. Which is why you either use it for BOTH sleep and storage. OR use it for sleep ONLY when sleeping and then manually use it as workout/movement afterwards (by manually removing the mattress every day.) These are the two options, unless you go overboard with resources like a too big house etc. Which by itself is sub optimal and not ideal, and ideal is what life is about striving for, like a compass. Having a vastly to big use of building space is like eating excessively at McDonald's, so stop it, get some help. And thankfully this is the simple core logical principle you need to optimize your personal "pod".

I would really love a beautiful cabinet or armoire to put everything into during the day, but I can’t find anything deep enough. I want to switch my room as well. I was so excited to finally have my own bed, my own room since I had to share a room as child up to as a teenager with one of my parents, basically my entire life. But that meant I bought a full set like a bed frame night stand vanity together right away without considering how I wanted my room to be, to look like and what worked or didn't work. I regret the investment and purchase so wish I could start over, have more space for a desk and shelves.
    No point in sharing in a 2yr old video, sigh but really do want to do this hopefully soon or I'll die trying I guess

    If you had enough room. You could use a 4’x2:5’ low style coffee table as a headboard. Or make one with saw and drill. Then during the day pop the futon on top of it. Adds extra leg room and use as storage. Get good tips from tiny homes on wheels.

    I committed this mistake years ago. After a while, maybe two to 3 years, it became even more flat, my spine did not like it as it liked at the beginning, when it gets cold and specially if you have humidity, you could experience a real nightmare! Folding the futon at first, seems cool, but with time, you just don' t feel doing it everyday for so long. Well... I simply gave up after it was getting wet and difficult to carry and to dry it! I lived in a huge house with a big yard to bring the futon to dry in the sun, but the futon is super heavy as it's made of pure cotton (the smell of the cotton is wonderful, I truly enjoyed), with time, it will get heavier with the body sweat and humidity of the air, and you end up with no energy to put it in the sun. Anyways... I guess Japanese people really had no better option when they made up futons!

    I've slept like this for years. A few Pros you missed were
    1) Never stub your toe again
    2) any box you have is a fine nightstand
    3) You can put your snacks, drinks, lube, toys, everything right next to you during sex
    4) No falling off the edge!
    The cons though are
    1) Harder to get out of bed if you're injured
    2) Gotta keep that floor very clean always

    We have been sleeping on the floor for three years now and will never switch back to a "normal" bed.

    I'm about to move into a new apartment to start university and since I have to buy a new bed anyway I'm considering a futon, especially cause the student apartments aren't very big... would you still reccomend it after a few months?

    • @SameraAbroad
      @SameraAbroad  2 роки тому +4

      I'm still using it! It's definitely a space saver which is awesome. It is a little more upkeep with having to keep the floors regularly clean since you sleep so low. But the reality is I don't pack up my futon all the time and I get a little lazy some weeks which is okay too ;) If you like to study / work on a bed, the futon (when set as a bed) may not be the most comfortable, unless you're used to work on the floor or with a low table since it gives you a different kind of support while sitting. New apartments are always exciting - good luck!

      hi! the futon I have is from Nejfuton, but they are made in Europe (where I am located) so i'm not sure it helps your search so much. In my new video I also have a new futon from Nejfuton with some latex filling if you're curious of the differences. good luck :)

    I used the rocker prior to baby delivery when I was up in the middle of the night due to heartburn and loved it! Little one is now 6 days old and loves the rocker ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxXH3jIpsn6vpr3D26KWAriUejh7CSxVp7 , she gets great sleep when used. I had a 1st degree tear repair so sitting can be very uncomfortable and down right painful when the rx mortin wears off, however even then the rocker is firm enough for support but soft enough to feel comfortable. I'm 4'9" so I fit in the chair easily and my 6"3' friend also can sit comfortably in it with a little one. 💖 I would definitely recommend this rocker as a must have for any parent to be👍

      where I currently live insects are really minimal aside from the occasional house spider, I certainly wouldn't have done this setup when I lived in a bigger city that had more potential house pests.

During Pros & Cons you failed to mentioned the experience of when being intimate 😏… i mean sooner or later the knees will buckle , wrist will aches , the back starts to tense up lol i dont care how young one is … if you use many positions or few, it will start to ache eventually .Specially if your that low to the ground lol . Hope you can give us an update on that 😅lol. 😉

    I hope you did not throw away your beautiful bed. Your room feels empty with this tiny futon and honestly it looks like a cheap student oom now. We are never gratefull for what we have, always looking for different things. You could have tried it in another room without getting rid of your beautiful bed. Also it is not ecological to throw away new things that are still valuable!

    • @SameraAbroad
      @SameraAbroad  Рік тому +1

      Don't worry nothing was thrown away - my old bed was in good condition so it was donated and even though my apartment is small (one bedroom, one living room / kitchen combo) we are lucky to have some storage space and saved our bed frame in case we one day want to make a change or in the future have a larger apartment and can make a guest room. I agree it looked pretty 'studenty' when I first started, it was a learning process, since then I've made some upgrades to mature the space to my liking. I feel much happier and healthier with this setup :)
