just came here from watching the 6.1 rehaul of this fight, YOOOOOOOO it is amazingly redone. Gaius' innocence ability is a tankbuster now and he has a stackmarker. . . . . . . . . . . . . . He has a new ability to make phantom versions of himself, a reference to the emerald weapon fight maybe?
Is that all? O lady of the vortex, o mighty garuda. Of all the primals, the most terrible. I say again... IS... THAT... ALL? seriously, this guy was badass incarnate
He said that backed up by the power of a god-eating Allagan robot hastily repaired by Nero "Incel Albert Wesker". EDIT: Oh, didn't notice the comment was 7 years old. Whoops!
I am so bitter they took those dialogue options out. Just put a timer on them if you're going to stuff the cutscenes into being unskippable(though tbh I AM rather glad they did that).
***** Unfortunately I don't think he is. Y'shtola is the only 14 character in Dissidia, unfortunately. Dunno why they picked her, of all the people they coulda gone with :/
kalmahcarl well, in arcade edition, she is. In the updated ps4 to come however, i dont see a 14 antagonist not cutting it. They stated even tamza wouldnt come till an update, and i assume it means hes at least initially not in the arcade except from a posdible new version.
Anyone remember Prae and CM being the runs of allagan tomestones for level 50 when 50 was cap and the cs's were skippable for faster runs? Those were the days!
He's still the best antagonist from FFXIV IMHO. There may have been more epic battles, but I can see where Gauis is coming from more then any of the other antagonists.
@@niiinjaaaaa Still holds true for me. Zenos comes off as something of an ass, and I have little interest in him. Emet Selch comes a close second to Gaius, however....
Throwback to one run I did through Praetorium where I and a bunch of other people in the chat made jokes about Gaius's goal being to make "the ultimate pizza". Here are some quotes: "what drives even men of learning, even the great louisoix, to eat such mediocre pizza?" "such devastation... this was not what i put on the menu."
I wish they'd give this guy an EX version of his fight. Gaius is so damn bad ass. And dat music....damn I love hearing that part of the BGM when running through this on Main Scenario roulette.
I think part of that had to do with the fact that Gaius had already been portrayed in 1.0 as being completely and utterly out of the player character's league. He took on Yda, Papalymo, Thancred, and Yshtola all at once and the only one who got close to landing a hit was Yda. And while that was going down the player was absolutely powerless to help. He had the scions on the defensive the entire time and never moved faster than a menacing stroll. And he was holding back then. He didn't even power up like he does before the fight in the Praetorium.
I love the Garlean Empire. Too bad that Gaius and his Gang just had such a short time in the game. I really liked them. Would be nice if you had other Garlean outfit options then just the Peon cloth.^^
God the 2.0 story was great. I loved doing these fights tbh. I know by the time I did em in 2.5 everyone was sick to death of it but man great story imo for an MMO.
Gaius was already a great character, so I'm glad that a certain revelation involving the Garlean leadership ended up adding another layer of complexity and sympathy to him, especially because he's so obviously alive that the only way it would be more obvious would be if the game were to put a flashing neon sign over the screen that said "HEY GUYS SHADOWHUNTER IS GAIUS"
Even with all the encounters we end up having since the days of the Praetorium, Gaius still holds the spot of Best Villain in FFXIV. We've had many antagonists, but not many could truly say they were capable of impeding our path more than Legatus van Baelsar himself. He also was the only villain of XIV to NOT want to cause needless slaughter (see every other main antagonist), just subjugation. To see how well he is at that aspect: Play the Weapon Project storyline in Shadowbringers. My respect for him only increased from experiencing that.
I never resonate with villains in any other game (except for a select few), but Gaius... His speech at the very end after you defeat him and the Ultima Weapon resonated with me, because it shows that he truly does care for Eorzea and it's people even though he went about it the complete wrong way. It also speaks true to whats happening today in the real world. "The misguided elevate the frail. And the frail lead the people astray."
gilgammesh1 I want a version of every dungeon I can solo, duo or trio with and fill the other slots with NPCs. Let me bring my Chocobo in, or something like FFXI's Trust system, Yoshi PLEASE!
Mekkah Dee definitely agree with you. how about trials too? it is possible for your retainer to somehow go and get loot weapons from the fricking extreme battles if you are lucky enough. imagine that going out with your retainer to kick titan's ass!
***** yeah i tried the praetorian as a ilvl215 drg. nero was hard, gaius turned out to be easier. but i couldnt beat the ultima weapon phase 1, its basic attacks sliced off 850hp and i just cant heal past that. i got it to ~40% on my best attempt
hes literally saying "defeat me and prove me wrong, if u suck im gonna do the shit here and solve your problems my way" the bad thing about that is, that every weak #normal person is screwed cuz he gives a shit about them ^^ sometimes i wish you could have turned him over to a good guy (but stil badass ofc)
It's heavily hinted that a gun blade job will be in the 5.0 expansion if so can't wait to cosplay a former garlean soldier and see how these scenes look from that perspective. Also I can already see the Gaius cosplayers in 5.0 if they ever sell his armour on the mogstation lol.
I just cleared Heavensward last night. Didn't they use this song when you fight Regula van Hydrus in "Close Encounters of the VIth Kind?" Which is thematically appropriate because he used most of Gaius' attacks in that encounter.
Gaius is a great villain, but he is still very much a villain. He is a bad person, and I'm glad they took care to single that out in 5.x everyone in the comments wanting to fight for him shows how good of a character he is, the rhetoric of might makes right he promotes is very harmful and the wake of destruction he caused shows it. Plus he's a groomer...

tell me, for WHOM do you SIMP
OOF, how very CRINGE *vine boom*
Lmao I JUST saw that video 😂
i love how they took Nael van Darnus theme and made it into Gaius theme. Both Extremely capable fighters and General of Garlemald.
Gaius, it's good to see you again...
I am so bitter they took those dialogue options out. Just put a timer on them if you're going to stuff the cutscenes into being unskippable(though tbh I AM rather glad they did that).
Gaius is badass enough. They should've given the man his own theme.
Breadback Here's to hoping he's in the new dissidia. How cool would that be?
***** Literally the best thing ever. XIV needs an antagonist and either him or Lahabrea would be the only real choices IMO.
***** Unfortunately I don't think he is. Y'shtola is the only 14 character in Dissidia, unfortunately. Dunno why they picked her, of all the people they coulda gone with :/

Giant nerd and now there’s Emet Selch
@@diabolicaldag It's been detailed in lore that Solus zos Galvus(Emet as a Garlean) was fond of Gaius, makes sense if you ask me.
i nearly had a stroke reading this comment before i realized that it was from years ago
@@niiinjaaaaa Still holds true for me. Zenos comes off as something of an ass, and I have little interest in him. Emet Selch comes a close second to Gaius, however....
Agreed
Gaius you will never be forgotten

The most bad ass Garlean of ARR and the first to go super Garlean.
"Yaaaaaarrrgh!" - Gaius van Baelsar
I wish they'd give this guy an EX version of his fight. Gaius is so damn bad ass.
And dat music....damn I love hearing that part of the BGM when running through this on Main Scenario roulette.
Basically Castrum Marinum.
In 4.5/4.55, I'm looking forward to this song playing, accompanied by 9 words:
In the coming battle, you will fight as Shadowhunter.
I will be so disappointed if this doesn't happen.
Will be the best thing ever. /imperialsalute
Play newest MSQ btw
Well, that would make sense wouldn't it.
well....maybe sometime in the 5.x patches or 6.0
i wish they had made a solo fight with gaius
Same.
I think part of that had to do with the fact that Gaius had already been portrayed in 1.0 as being completely and utterly out of the player character's league. That's what Zenos is for I guess
Succubi Pie Agreed
Every once and a while the game will bug out and leave you alone with Gaius while others were watching. Man the temptation was real!!
it is so weird to listen to this track without the vocals
RIP to "Hmph. How very glib."
why they removed it?
i swear , was it not for the ascian , i would have served under that guy with no question ask
Agree
fully agree.
He's just so.. inspiring
yes, and , to his credit, he did had a solution to the primal issue O~o
.......
though granted, effing ascian where up to no good with it
*Joins praetorium group*
*Gets to Gaius*
*Refuses to fight him and spams /imperialsalute*

This theme gives me heavy Ivalice vibes. FF12, Tactics, etc.

Such an EPIC track for the Gaius fight in Castrum...unbelievable!!!
Can't help but hope he comes back. He was after all only buried and we never saw a body.
As of 4.3 your w8sh has been granted

I keep expecting the rise of the White røven lyrics to start
Poor Man's Vader
Champion, I am your father!
Me: nooooooo!
"Eorzea is MINE by RIGHT!"
I want a version of this where you can solo it with NPC's, just so i can watch all cutscenes :3

I regret doing this with randoms. I had no idea this cut scene had 'dialogue' options.
All of you are talking about Gaius meanwhile my Turn 9 PTSD is kicking in.
"Come, show me your power champions of eorzea!"
what? there was a dialogue choice at what you're fighting for? gawd damnit...i want to fight for gaius xD

gaius is the best character in the game

this song, or rather the version with the vocals plays in T9 heavensfall phase onward
Josh Cummings In T9, that song is called " Rise to the White Raven",
Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee's back!
Am I the only one who likes this theme better than Rise of the White Raven?
HE ma IDOL... ALL HAIL GAIUS VAN BAELSAR.. hehe
Super Saiyan Darth Vader.
I would like these 2 to fight honestly. Vader would still win easily tho.
Best part of the song was the first 45 seconds
Is he wearing hussars jackcoat?
vanity?

Darth Vader
indeed
I thought his last name was Van Baelstar?
I only hear this for two seconds in game lmao
Gaius van hydrus? no such character
