Thank you so much for doing this one!
That’s awesome that you got sponsored by Unicorn Overlord. I’ve been playing the demo obsessively the past few days, and it’s absolutely fantastic. I highly recommend everyone to try it out if you’re a fan of Fire Emblem.
Looks like I'm getting a new rpg
I tried the demo last week not expecting much, it then became the first game I've preordered since Dragon Age 2 back in 2011.
Loved it.
atlus why do you keep pushing unicorn overlord on random videos I'm already buying it this is silly
(glad they gave you moeny game is good)
Grima too big for cameraman to get a full shot. I can relate
It's interesting to see the amount of details that was added just to make the 3D screen better.
I've never heard of this game, I hope this video does well, I'm watching it fully.
fe awakening is such a banger, highly recommend it.
I would recommend ignoring the comments section if you're planning on play it or watching it.
My first fire emblem game!
I'm assuming this was done with a patched emulator, but I feel like this should be a feature of every emulator. There are so many games I'd love to do this with.
11:55 I've played that map so many times and never did I notice there were ducks and a crane there! wow
glorious ducks
oh huh, in Echoes it gets confirmed that the Risen do wear a mask with a weird bug inside so I wonder if them having faces in awakening was intentional for that or not
Well grima is at the end of the game so it would be a cool reference
I was thinking the same thing, this a the first time I'm seeing the actual Risen models up close
beat me to it.
Though i can add this piece of information:
its speculated that if their "eyes" glow red it means Grima is controlling them. (otherwise they would be feral monsters going berserk)
I wish Echoes explained why people had no feet 😭
FEH also referenced it with 2 Risen masks (one with and one without the glowing eyes) that you can put on most units there. Did not know that started back in Echoes.
You know, the battle maps in Fire Emblem Fates are complete recreations of the Strategy Maps, as far as I know! When you enter battle, unlike Awakening which sort of has this "instanced" map to represent the area, Fates has you fighting the enemy in almost the exact same place your sprites were standing! I'd really like to see that zoomed out. I wonder if the floating islands in Revelations have detailed undersides?
i love that map detail in fates, engage has that too i love seeing how faithful the fight scenario is with the map
What do you mean by "strategy maps"?
@@swirl6996 I mean the map you're looking at when directing your units around as sprites. The top-down map.
I don't think many will agree with me, but there's something so charming about the 'ugly' graphics on lot of these 3DS titles. It's like between the PSX and PS2, very unique
cant believe i find this nostalgic, one of the best 3ds games of all time its cool seeing it in a new perspective
I, uh, never noticed that the desert area was Grima's skull.
Grima's skeleton actually stretches across at least two or three separate maps in Plegia! The game does an amazing job of making you feel Grima's enormity at every opportunity.
@@TriforceWisdom64 yeah, once I started thinking about it, I kinda put that together. Like, the map where you're fleeing Plegia after Emmeryn's death. That's definitely Grima's rib cage.
In some dialogue someone (maybe Lissa?) actually talks about enormous bones lying around and they say something like: that can’t actually be grima. I hope I remember this correctly
@@serpifeu5836 there's a good chance of that. It's been a good ten years since I've played so the middle section in particular is a bit cloudy for me
Fun fact about FE:AWAKENING a lot of the risen lore and Grima lore was expanded upon in FE:Echoes (Gaiden Remake)
which expanded on why some of the decisions on why the Risen looked and acted the way they did, and explained what Grima is.
Now, Im not gonna be the one to spoil it as there ARE videos on it, but I do recommend playing both games for yourself (Echoes then Awakening) because it ties the whole story together, they all take place at the same area in different time periods, and its a 100% worth play.
anywho...
But yes, the risen are wearing a mask, and they are still zombies. play the games to figure out the reason! or look up a video lol.
7:30 - I remember doing art for Colors 3D on the 3DS and it has this same feature to see the layers at an angle just like this... mainly to help keep track what thing is in what layer when making a drawing with a 3D effect popping out at you.
The reason many of us artists "complete" layers where the audience obviously won't be able to see the details is mostly as a "just in case", like if we want to adjust the top (front) layer and it ends up revealing more of the bottom layer's contents without needing to go back to that layer to redraw/recolor the parts we could have chosen to omit before.
Better safe than sorry, I'd say.
I LOVED this game. It got me into Fire Emblem and was my first intro to the games proper.
That mystery continent looks to be the eastern half of Jugdral. I can see the sea between Isaac, Yied, and Thracia as well as the part where Thracia would have a land bridge to Miletos
similarly to the ducks and crane, there's a beachside fight where there's a cat napping in the sun on a wall :)
I'm really blown away by the level of detail they got on the 3DS for this game.
But then you look at something like Pokemon on the switch and people blamed the hardware for the lack of detail...
I mean, with +1000 different creatures, that is believable.
@@toumabyakuyaThere's roughly 190 playable characters in Fire Emblem Awakening. They each have their own designs, attacks, and lines of dialogue in certain circumstances. Pikachu says Pikachu and uses the same recycled attack animations that every other thunderbolt user uses. Pokemon is a shining example of "this game is for kids, so we actually do not give a shit"
Have you played kid Icarus uprising? 😏
@@handlesshouldntdefaulttonames *"There's roughly 190 playable characters in Fire Emblem Awakening."*
That's nowhere close to the same amount of data, pal.
*"Pikachu says Pikachu and uses the same recycled attack animations that every other thunderbolt user uses."*
Okay, but do you know how many moves exist in total? easily close to 500+. So those are a lot to program as well.
*"Pokemon is a shining example of "this game is for kids, so we actually do not give a shit""*
And here it is, the calling card of any Pokemon hater that only hates the new games because it is a fad to do so.
@@toumabyakuya Tell me, which Pokemon is your favorite to masturbate to?
1:00 "the undead looking part of their bodies seems to be just a mask" That's because they are! Risen are reanimated by insects called Thanatophages which are placed on the insides of masks and then onto corpses.
Was that explained in a later entry? I skipped Echoes and Fates.
@@shadowsinscarlet3222According to another comment, it is explained in Echoes!
@@shadowsinscarlet3222 It was in Echoes, which I highly recommend, it's in the post game dungeon which is entirely devoted to Grima's backstory.
Well that's horrifying!
Are the bodies even technically dead or is it a insect that completely takes over the mind and extends the life of the body indefinitely?
Man, seeing the full Grima dragon form is actually pretty unnerving. Kinda cool they captured that vibe even in an older handheld!
that's the game that made me a FE fan. no wonder given it opened up a entire generation to the series.
The intended goodbye became a new beginning..!
Thank you for reminding me how much I LOVE how they handled Grima's sheer scale in this game. It's still so impressive they managed to cram something so large-feeling into a teeny tiny 3DS scene, and the design is one of the most intimidating dragons I've ever fought in a video game. It makes sense that the battlemap for the final battle was heavily culled to save on resources, though. The 3DS can only handle so much.
It really speaks to how much of a labor of love Awakening was, that there's so many little details to find in it, even out of bounds, away from the player's eyes. Thank you for taking a look, my guy! I'll be right there for any future FE content. :)
Fun fact. Awakening was being developed before the final hardware specs were confirmed, so they actually held back on the details. This is why characters don't have feet in Awakening but do in Fates
the "Mystery Continent" is just a repeated and rotated version of Ylisse and Valm pasted around.
this makes me really curious about Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. they're the first fully 3D fire emblem games and i guarantee theres a lot to see, even on the outskirts of some of the maps
Polys are cheaper than texture resolution.
Video memory is taken into account when making textures. For old hardware, it's common practice to paint half of the texture and UV unrap your model so that one half is flipped and covers the other.
This is why cases like character asymmetry are done by using accessories rather than making a larger texture.
Compare to modern hardware where Vram isn't that big of a deal as the assets come with different texture resolutions (depending on the target platform). UV unwrapping is also not part of the pipeline anymore as models became too complex to do so. Basically, artists just paint directly on them and let the software do the rest during export with maybe a little optimisation phase.
13:15 Wow this mystery continent really closely resembles the Jugdral map from Genealogy of the Holy War! Amazing to think that is hidden just slightly off camera, thank you for showing this off!
FIRE EMBLEM on the channel?? We are so winning
He NEEDS to do Three Houses. So much stuff offscreen
Oh, yeah! Fire Emblem! I'm surprised I never thought about breaking its boundaries before; the 3D entries have so much interesting stuff tucked away in the battle scene backgrounds, some of which are only used like once, and some of which might never be seen because the terrain the game checks for is so rare.
17:34 Alright buddy, now we all know what you were really looking for you sussy baka
"its not super exciting....>.>"
lmao u called it
Rest in Peace, Citra.
I was obsessed with this game in high school. Love to see all these details up close for the first time!! thank you much
Risen wearing Death Mask is actually part of the lore!
I think it was covered more in the Shadows of Valentia but there was a alchemist called Forneus that experimented with the undead and created a corpse army before he was sealed.
Those corpses had masks with bugs places on their faces (called Death Masks) and in two night the bugs will take over the host. The bugs would pour preservation fluids into the host stopping/slowing the decay of the flesh and boosting their physical attributes.
The bugs use the Risen to seek food and when there is none, the bugs go into slumber.
Thank you for doing this episode. I'd be interested in ones for Fates and Echoes, too.
And also, I remember finding a cat in one of the maps in Awakening. I thought it was so cool that they put little animals in the maps to breathe a bit of life into the area.
Love the switching between the calm and Ablaze versions of the themes based on your VO. Great editing and the effort you put into your work really shows. Keep it up!
Never thought I'd see a Fire Emblem boundary break video honestly
Oh that's pretty cool. Feels like forever ago when I first bought Fe awakening. Played lunatic plus last year and had a fun time
Not seeing if Gerome has a face under his mask is a big miss.
The character models look very well detailed for a 3DS game
16:00 the world of awakening always felt so expansive to me, especially the sky. So cool to see how they accomplished that!
Love seeing Unicorn Overlord sponsoring this video. That game's demo is flipp'n amazing, and is nearly identical to Ogre Battle!
13:12 Judgral spotted
That would be cool, but it's just Ylisse upside-down
@@michaelharding2953 You're right. damn, and it almost looked liked it could also be Magvel too.
Oh man I've been hoping on an episode of Fire Emblem for a while.
I hope you eventually get to 3H in due time. I've always got the feeling that game's not showing the full extent some maps have been modeled...
He'll explore each and every 2D diorama from the dialogue scenes 😜
I'd love to see a follow-up with Fates, and how the petting mechanic looks in 3d
Oh I loved Awakening when I played it. Very cool to see this being covered. It is a bit sad we never see a full model of Grima, but given the hardware it makes sense. Hope to see more Fire Emblem in the future :). Would be interesting to do Echoes and compare the "Creation" model to the Grima models in Awakening.
Fire Emblem Awakening means a lot to me and it's one of my favorite games, so I'm really excited to learn more about it! I never thought the shops were a 3D room!
18:37 This was my request on Twitter, looking at this odd black mark in this area. I can see it doesn't actually move with the camera here, but it does show pasted on the ground where the camera would be. Still don't know what it is lol
Man, this has instantly become one of my favourite episodes of the show, and that's saying a lot, given I've seen them all
I adore Fire Emblem!! I would love to see you cover more games from this series. I'd love to see Path of Radiance or Radiant Dawn. Radiant Dawn in particular has some really interesting maps, so I'd be curious if there's any cool details hidden out of bounds.
I am surprised that this is the first Fire Emblem Boundary Break Episode.
"Top Down Game Series that transitioned into 3D by now." screams for Boundary Break.
This is probably my most replayed game of all time and so seeing all these maps from new angles was legit shocking to me lul
I forgot how cute this game looked. I started with Fire Emblem Three Houses, which was also kinda cute, but something about DS and 3DS games being so minute felt a lot cuter. It's like they're little toy characters or something.
This was pretty cool, I hope you make an episode covering more Fire Emblem and of corse Xenoblade 2 needs an episode! The titans need massive zoom out shots!
I would like to see videos for the other 3DS games from the studio as well. Every game they made is more detailed that the next as they got more used to the hardware. Code Name S.T.E.A.M. is a bit weird because you do explore the maps from the characters perspectives but never see an overhead view, so I wonder what that would look like.
Another great vid, can you please do a boundary break on Star Wars: galaxy of heroes? I’ve always been interested on how the game worked. Thanks!
Aversa straight up snapping a neck is actually unnerving lol, nothing really morbid is ever actually shown on screen in FE
Literally jumped out of my seat when this popped up in my recommended. I am SO excited for thus
Oh man, I absolutely adore this game. Its so cool to see all of these out of bound tricks, it's also really nice to see from a game development perspective!
i know so much of this seems really minor and maybe uninteresting to some people but ive geniunely been dying to know what some of these full maps looked like for a decade
Yooo id love to see the rest of the 3D FE games at some point
If you come back to Fire Emblem. The Radiance games would be amazing!
Seeing the different layers of the 2D art used to make a 3D effect is pretty cool. And oh yeah, already preordered Unicorn Overlord. Looks pretty great
Long time Boundary Break + Fire Emblem fan!!! I'm so exited to see this episode. I never thought I'd see a Fire Emblem Boundary Break ever and I'm super excited!!
How did I not notice Grima had a human face on his head?
given grimas lore and the face shown underneath during the battle i can't help but wonder if that face is the face of the alchemist who made grima
Grima's lore in echoes states that the homunculus at first resembled a human fetus and later on developed draconic features
This had the first good look of Unicorn Overlord ive seen but not on PC so cant get it... so weird to ignore it
Yeahhhhh same. If it was on PC I'd buy it in a heartbeat
It'll probably get ported later.
@@velvetbutterfly I really hope so, but I've been told that these developers have a track record of not releasing on PC so I'm a bit worried
@@juicyjuustar121 yes but that's for a few reasons. Atlus is one of the more traditional companies, so they don't enjoy the stigma PC games had for years.
On top of that it is much harder to port a game to a PC, especially for a small company. But lately they've been doing a lot of PC games.
The entire Persona series pretty much. SMT3 and 5.
It may take a while but it should come
I bought the artbook with this game; I was so excited for a new FE. I need to play a new game, I think! Maybe try Lunatic for once!
I love the FE series. I would love to see you do Three Houses.
An additional detail I want to add over the "Book of Secrets" and the other book on the table! In 2021, I found these textures on a 3DS ressource website and tried to read through it, and the content is actually a 2011 copy-pasted cnblogs page on how to "Create a Wii Web Header in Photoshop" that's copied multiple time to fill the entire page. It says "Select the Rounded Rectangle Tool from your tools palette then above your screen under options palette choose Fill Pixels, set the radius to 16 px and check anti-aliased. Create a new layer and draw a light gray, color code #2F2F2F rounded rectangle , exact size 115x23px. Now cut the top corners of the rounded rectangle." and repeats again and again.
Absolutely random, but I thought it was funny they put some (barely) readable english text about a Wii Header tutorial on a 3DS game.
let's go I hope we get more fire emblem
I'd love to see more Fire Emblem games be featured on the channel!
Oh so you put the naughty bits behind a paywall! I'm kidding of course. I imagine you would get demonetized over here.
Very cool, very epic.
Also, I've already per-ordered Unicorn Overlord, I'm very excited!
Nice! Looking forward to more fire emblem 😎
YEEEES!!!!! FIRE EMBLEEEEEEELM!!!!!! I'M SO HAPPY TO SEE IT HERE!!!!!
Of all FE games, the I wanted to see featured here the most is Three Houses, definitely. Especially a free tour through Garreg Mach Monastery, since it has so many places you can't visit.
RIP Citra :'(
The continent that we can't access is probably Jugdral, which is the location of Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776. We have not returned to that continent since the SNES era.
Hey! The Book of Secrets probably reffers to the Logbook the player can actually read in-game. It has a bit of information about every unit. There's a DLC map where they lost this very same book and everybody is worried.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this game. Thank you for sharing info on it!!! Would love to see more FE games.
I do hope one day you’ll do a boundary break of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. One thing I’d love to see is how Midgar looks up close from the open world. How much of it is actually modeled.
Would definitely recommend Unicorn Overlord. The Visuals of Odin Sphere+the Gameplay of Fire Emblem+a narratove system that brings New Vegas to mind? Yes. It's great. It came out on my birthday and it's one of the best gifts I could've asked for lol
YOOOOOOOOO I SEEN A POLL FOR THIS LIKE 3 YEARS AGO I NEVER THOUGHT YOU'D ACC DO IT LESS GOOOOOO
Fe Echeos Boundary Break
I'll be honest I never would've thought you could do something like this for an FE game, at least not one with as limited a scope of view as Awakening. My lesson is learned.
P.S. How do you go about scoring a sponsorship from a big-name game like this? I know it's probably less impressive/extraordinary than it seems, but it's still interesting.
Loved this episode can't wait for any other Fire Emblem you do. FE is one of my absolute favorite series! Glad you started out with my favorite one though!
FIRE EMBLEM AWAKENING MENTIONED RAHHHH 🗣🗣🗣
Unicorn Overlord people, coming out for PS4, PS5, Switch and even Xbox Series X... But absolutely cant be done for the One X or PC FOR SOME REASON
PLEASE do more Fire Emblem!!!
Just gonna ask this outta curiosity: Are you interested by any chance in the new "Shiren the Wanderer and the mystery dungeon of serpentcoil island" game for switch? I think a boundary break would be interesting because I believe they used a similar trick to "a link between worlds" to pull off the top down perspective. I now that's not a terrifyingly popular game but I'm giving it a shot asking anyway, love your channel and your eye for analizing stuff.
I always had a theory that Fire Emblem Awakening is actually a book the player is writing. That would give contect to why you make improtant decisions (big and small). What also supports this is the fact that when you start up the game, the file select is at that candlelit desk with the book. And the book closes after the credits roll.
Could you please do a (short) video boundary breaking the two rules boards on Mario Party 3? During gameplay less than half of both boards are visible, including the spaces on those boards. Thank you...😊
wow, you got every look at Grima's true for that i wanted to see. too bad about that last map with the weird effects though.
but i saw enough there of what i wanted to see! there aint much of him and its simple scrolling textures below for the effect.
Could we get a octopath traveller 1 and 2 boundary break? I’d loooove to see how they pulled off those visuals up close!
Thank you so much for this I love the Fire Emblem series have played since I was a kid on gamecube. Would love an episode on one of the switch Fire Emblem games or Echoes Shadows of Valencia. 😊
The joys that Fire Emblem Awakening brings me.... thinking that this could have been the LAST one ever. Even on the 3ds, they worked some weird magic to make it work.
Please do more fire emblem!!!
could you try a boundary break of pseudoregalia? it got an update recently plus it's just fun in general so it might be interesting to look into
Fantastic game. I remember the time when this was the most recent FE game. Everyone was so hyped and the series has gained many new fans with this title. Absolutely fantastic, I have spent hours and days with Awakening!
I think the cutscene images are layered like that so if you're using 3D mode the pictures have a 3D illusion. I literally can't see stereoscopic 3D from an eye disability so I could easily be wrong
How did i never notice the Abyss Watchers from Dark Souls 3 making an appearance in Fire Emblem Awakening
這麽看來,Fire Emblem在3DS下的建模已經十分優秀了。
wow! thanks for uploading this one! would love to see path of radiance/radiant dawn if theres anything interesting/video worthy! not sure how hard it is to look into such big games though 😅
