Funnily enough, your information on Lewyn's survival isn't quite correct. According to one of the *many* title screen interludes, Lewyn was literally brought back by the god Holsety himself. Lewyn is only in gen 2 by literal divine intervention.
Lewyn's possession by Forseti is a weird story. The stuff Lewyn says to Seliph sounds like the things he'd say to Sigurd in the past but at the same time, he's also nullified of most of his emotions. He can't go back to Silesse probably because Forseti will leave Lewyn's body so he entrusts his position as king to Ced. What would happen after Forseti left his body would be unclear as Lewyn would either drop dead or return back to his senses.
@@partyharry7585 only in Thracia, Sacred Stones and Birthright (also Conquest if you reclass Mozu) is a woman archer at the start of the game, Shadow Dragon has Gordin, Gaiden/Echoes archers are male exclusive, Mystery of the Emblem you have Gordin again and his brother Ryan, in Binding Blade you have Wolt, Wil in Blazing Sword, Virion in Awakening, Niles in Conquest and in Three Houses everyone can be an archer.

Oh boy, you're playing Thracia next. Be warned, that game is absolutely merciless to blind players. But it's also one of the most mechanically complex and interesting of them all. Great work on this video. I tried to get into Genealogy a couple of times, but there was always something that put me off. Chapter 2 in particular kinda broke me with its intended path of progression. Seeing such a passionate and thoughtful analysis of it helps me understand why this game is so beloved, even if I just can't seem to get into it myself. I'm really looking forward to seeing how you tackle Thracia now.
I think Thracia is one of the worst games in the franchise. I find that people give it too much of a pass for being difficult, and while some of the innovations are cool like capture, stealing weapons, having no money and fatigue, it easily has the absolute worst mechanics in the series that allows the player to break the game like PCC, laughably broken skills and weapons, movement stars and all-20 caps. On repeat playthroughs, I do find most other games in the series easy even on the hardest difficulty, but I don't think Thracia is the right kind of difficulty, because it feels like you are meant to use every exploit from your first playthrough rather than picking up on them by yourself.
I have to agree that when playing blind, you'll be absolutely curb stomped with just how merciless it can be. However, the difficulty is a charm in itself that actually works well with Leif's journey. Most of the time, you're escaping from an actual threat whether it be Galzus or the seemingly infinite number of reinforcements. The enemies are much more threatening, and the challenges (that can be optional) can be so difficult that it's fair not to attempt to overcome unless the player has had a second playthrough or more. So in other words, to win then the player has to be like Leif. Not as good as those with more experience, feeling the loss of comrades that wished to serve your cause, and best of all to have the determination to overcome overwhelming odds. I think that's cool in itself. The first playthrough is always the toughest. There's no hand holding. There's no guarantee that you'd get all the best items or all the available recruitable characters. There's not even a guarantee that all your characters will survive. However, in the back of one's mind, one would play again just to make sure they saved that one character, steal every single one of Reinhardt's weapons, or making a meme unit like Ronan into an absolute beast despite being an infantry. The second playthrough, after learning the requirements for certain recruitments and to efficiently play the game after knowing more, it gets a lot easier. Thracia 776 is a typical "Nintendo Hard" game. Where it's only through past experiences does it make the game a little easier yet still challenging regardless.
Things I've taken away from this series: i) Wizards are usually bad news 2) The mighiest heroes of each land are all between 16-17 years old 3) You can catch members of a royal family as easily as a cold

Man, having come from the newer fire emblems (all the gba ones, POR, RD, and 3 houses), FE4 is a game that was way ahead of its time. There are so many possibilities and different outcomes compared to even the newer games. It's hard having come from the GBA fire emblems due to the fear of missing out on making the best characters. The GBA games were so simple and easy compared to FE 4. It's really stressful, but I'm going to just play it without a care so that I can enjoy it.

Generation 2 is way less interesting but it does offer the best Camus of all Fire Emblem Games in the character of Ishtar. And the Dastard Alvis and even Trabant are still here to became some of the most memorable antagonist of the licence.

I don't know if you know the fates of all the gen 1 chars (playable), because you would need to do multiple playthroughs to unlock specific scenes (or just go on the wiki, idk lmao). Note: This is from the games, the Mitsuki Oosawa manga is non-canon and changed the fates of several characters here, and will not include those. -Sigurd: killed at belhalla -Alec: killed at belhalla -Naoise: killed at belhalla -Arden: killed at belhalla -Lex: killed at belhalla -Midir: killed at belhalla -Chulainn/Holyn: killed at belhalla -Beowolf: killed at belhalla -Dew: killed at belhalla -Jamke: killed at belhalla -Father Claud: most likely killed at belhalla -Lewyn: killed by Manfroy at Belhalla (revealed in the opening after beating the game several times), but was resurrected by Forsetti. It's unclear whether it was really Lewyn or Forsetti, or a combination of both. She was killed by a possessed-Julius about ten years later, having regained her memories of Sigurd by then. -Lachesis: Escaped with Finn to Leonster. It is heavily speculated and implicated that they were lovers and that Finn fathered Nanna. Several years before FE5 begins she leaves Finn, Nanna, and Leif to return to Isaach so she can see Diarmuid, however vanished in the Yied Desert. Her fate is unknown, but Diarmuid says that she might still be alive. A lot of theories speculate she was attacked and turned to stone. This also likely where Finn disappeared to in his ending, to look for her. -Brigid: survived Belhalla but lost her memories and became the swordmaster Eyvel. She was turned to stone, but was restored. She eventually regains her memories and reunites with her children several years after the war. -Sylvia: survived Belhalla, but left her children in an orphanage and completely vanished. Likely to protect them as she was being hunted down due to being a part of Sigurd's army. Her fate is unknown, though theories say she was turned to stone. -Erinys: Dies between Belhalla and the start of gen 2. But if you married her to Lewyn (FE5 makes this pairing canon), there's more detail to it. Queen Lahnya died shortly after Belhalla, leaving Erinys as the Queen of Silesse, since Lewyn left her. She died several years later from illness, longing to see her husband again. -Tailtiu: by far the saddest ending imo, she was taken into custody by her sister-in-law Hilda, who was the mother of Ishtar and Ishtore. She was regularly abused and beaten, and often taking the brunt of the abuse away from her daughter, Tine. She eventually died from depression and illness, protecting Tine until the end. -Azel: unknown, though likely taken into custody by arvis due to still harboring affection for him -Quan: killed in yied massacre -Ethlyn: killed in yied massacre -Finn: disappeared into the Yied desert for three years after Leif became king of New Thracia, probably to look for Lachesis
While Gen 1 was the peak of the story, it still set up some great plot-threads to explore in Gen 2, like Leif having to reunite with his abducted sister, and the tragic irony that Seliph will have to fight his own brother to prevent Loptyr's revival. There's plenty of QOA improvements a remake can bring to the experience, but this game still holds up surprisingly well.
Sigurd was great because he was a deconstruction of the typical Fire Emblem Protagonist (Along with being as far as I see, the ONLY playable Cornelius character! Cornelius being Marth's father and the trend setter of the "your dad/mom/parental figure" dies for the Lord's character development trope! Jeralt is only playable in 3Hopes which is a spin-off so that doesn't count! and Chrom doesn't die, it's his first timeline self that is the Cornelius; I Really want a Playable Cornelius like Sigurd again! Really hope Intelligent does so in a future Emblem after Engage! This is saying this UNDER the assumption the next one isn't a FE4 remake like the rumors and leak suggest) while Seliph is a reconstruction of the Trope! Seliph works BECAUSE of the groundwork set by Sigurd and Gen 1! I mean really, the shock that you LOSE and the villains actually win and rule till Seliph grows up was a BIG surprise and enhances the story because of it! Especially as unlike the usual! We the player are more SAVVY to the plot points then Seliph because to Seliph, it would be the "Beginning of his story/game"....but to us it's just the mid point POSING as a Game Start! Plus Seliph is abit more grounded then his Father! Which is what is suppose to make the "Deconstruction/Reconstruction" work as Seliph is doing his best to AVOID the mistakes Sigurd made in Gen 1. Sigurd's really exciting because of those flaws, while Seliph can come off as "boring" because he's playing it safe! But that's pretty realistic, no one is going to want to follow the failure of their predeccessors! If a remake is incoming, I hope they enhance on these's themes more!

But em I wrong, Cornelius was the father of the hero, previous wielder of the legendary weapon the hero will use later as it was taken by the bad guy's AFTER they backstabbing and betrayed the Cornelius! The hero avenges his Cornelius father by killing the one who did the backstabbing (In Marth's case Jiol, in Seliph, Arvis). If it quacks its a duck my man! Sigurd the first half of the game might as well be you Playing Cornelius up till his end. Now if I said their was an archetype for XANE, you'd have a case of "making an Archetype for everything!" But tell me how not "A single parent of the hero or one who might as well be a Hero (Hey Liliana) was some badass before they got offended by a villain!" (Those like Joshua from SS don't count as he's not a main character, hell he can be dead by the time you reach that point of the story and it wouldn't affect the main story in any fashion") Me wonders where this reply came from? (intentions) as I don't think I was saying anything "that wasn't established before I even said it!" Plus does that mean "YOUR not a Fire Emblem fan" then WTF are you doing on a FE video...why even reply? 🤔 I'm now even more curious about you then I am FE now!🤓

I've read some summaries of what happened to fill in the gaps, but your telling of it from start to finish was much more satisfying. I'm also so happy to hear how much you enjoyed it! This is probably my favorite fire emblem game so far.
I decided to play Thracia 776 right after Chapter 5 of Genealogy, to continue through the FE timeline in chronological order. It's probably the hardest game in the series, at least if you go in blind. I think that I've had to reload my saves at least 40 times already, and I'm only on Chapter 7 haha. As for FE4, I honestly think it was the most enjoyable game in the series out of all of the ones I've played so far, and I'm still only halfway done with the game lol. I feel that many critics of the game are too used to the more modern titles and their mechanics and often don't come with an open mind, losing interest on the game due to its differences from the others.
The reason cavalry is considered so broken is because the vast majority of games in the series (basically the first half of the franchise) are actually pretty dang easy once you know what you're doing, so even in games where cavalry _do_ have lower stats than foot units (this is not a hard and fast rule), once you've gotten good enough at the game that you don't _need_ higher stat units to get past obstacles, the sheer speed at which mounted units can "get shit done" simply renders foot units at a major disadvantage in high-level play.
I feel like mounted units are alright at the state they are, is just that the tier lists and the general conception heavily favors ltc runs It's the same reason why armor knights are consider bad even though most regular players won't mind their biggest weaknesses like their low movement
I find it slightly weird that you sometimes use the non-officially localized names . Sometimes I get it because we don't have the official localization of every characters name but others are slightly weird.
I started playing the emulated fan translation of this game, and feel bad that I bounced off of it as hard as I did. The arena grind and large maps just made everything feel incredibly slow to a point that has made it hard to push through. I would love to see the story of this game given the modern Echoes treatment to adjust some of the gameplay ideas to more modern sensibilities and giving the story the space to breath it deserves. I would play an Echoes remake of this game in an instant.
Yeah thats the problem. I was stoked for the echoes remake because it would be such a improvement to playability, but fanboys for this one forget alot that is true for the series til gba era. And this games og is tedious af and needs QoL improvements significantly.
Great video. Loved the content and glad to be a supporter of it. It's amazing to see how clearly the early FE games succeeded and improved on each other and were refinements of Kaga's vision. It's super cool. I'd like to imagine he was proud. I remember loading up a ROM of Genealogy of the Holy War (no translation) and just being blown away at the sheer scale of the map. That's the one thing I never forgot. Modern FE is comparatively so scaled down - it'd be crazy to see a new Fire Emblem that brought the scale back to this game's level. Speaking of Modern FE, I'm in love with Three Houses now, and when you started talking about the "Holy Blood" and the image of the Holy Blood crest-wheel came on screen I nearly did a spit-take. The steelbook and artbook both heavily focus on a very similar image to represent the Goddess Sothis and the 10 Heroes' Crests.
there actually is another similarities between the two wheels, in that there is one more holy blood/crest hidden in the middle Loptous in FE4 and the Creator in FE16
In terms of gen 1 Vs gen 2, having played both jugdral games, you can really feel that gen 1 was designed first and given the most care in terms of story:deeper characters,a more interesting narrative and honestly a tiny bit more balanced Gen 2 has its nice points but you can really feel that Thracia was a necessary game to flesh out the story as in fe4 it's kind of full of lore dumps by "lewyn" that are nice yes but do feel they cool have been implemented a bit better Thracia in my opinion is the prosthetic leg for gen 2 as it gives you a real look into what the empire was before the Scion of light Its a much more brutal experience as it difficulty really works in favour of its story as you can really sense the desperation in each encounter Catch me back in the fe5 review where I'll probably just repeat this and add a little more because of spoilers
No Fe4 and fe5 are very different mechanically and I feel like both gens of fe4 tell a story and fe5 simply fleshes out that story So simply play fe4 and then fe5 Fe4's story is good enough imo Fe5 is there if you want to see how oppressive the empire could be
It sure is something special... but not necessarily in a good way. Yes, the plot is easily the best the series has offered yet. But the gameplay is really bad. Horse Emblem, gigantic slogs of maps, ambush spawns at their worst, obtuse as hell romance system, arena grindfest, Great Shield BS, no trading, enormous blobs of enemies rushing all at once at you, cheap panic baits every time you seize a castle, OP secret items that you're not gonna find without a guide, enemies autoequipping the weapon that counters yours when you can't do the same, infinite status staves galore, enemy thieves who steal ALL your hard-earned money even if you attack first, nonsensical individual wallets, trios of stupidly overpowered enemy sisters, Ms I-One-Shot-You-With-100-Accuracy-Ishtar... The list goes on and on and on. This is the worst FE game for a first-time player bar none. It's pain and suffering. Sure, not everything in the game is bad, but whatever good there is just doesn't compensate all this bad shit. Genealogy of the Holy War is a good movie/book but a bad game.
I feel like such a weirdo for not liking this game. It seems unanimously loved but I find it extremely frustrating. The story was pretty great but that alone can't salvage gameplay that infuriates me.
Don't worry, I'm not a big fan of this one either. I tried to get into it multiple times, but the slower pace, gigantic maps, and frequent swarms of enemies are annoying. Incidentally, if Nintendo makes a new Echoes game, I feel like FE4 here would be the perfect candidate. They fixed a lot of problems with the original Gaiden, after all. For the most part!

Also, since we're almost to the IRL route split of Kaga and Intelligent Systems, will you be taking a look at TearRing Saga and Berwick Saga? They come massively recommended from myself, and, while the games are even more obscure than JP FE, the handful of people who have played them will largely agree.

Yeah, I think it's a decent game to start out on. The only issue is that it isn't really representative of the rest of the series, but it may appeal to you because of that if you haven't finished any of the others.
I see I'm not the only one who saw the Brave Bow as Leif's legendary weapon. This is a fantastic video, it's nice to go through the story in one block, as I had difficulty following back when I played FE4.
If I could offer some light criticism, the story analysis section of this video feels like it leans too heavily into synopsis. I'm more interested in hearing your thoughts, feelings, and interpretations on the story over a plot recital. Genealogy is a great game and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
The plot reading is a synopsis, followed by the analysis. Do you think it would be better if the two were linked? I am hoping to turn these story sections into plot rundowns later down the line, so I'm hesitant. I more want people to get up to speed with what happens since these aren't just made for the Fire Emblem community.
Ok so I'm gonna take your word and not watch the vid since I havent played it yet. But my issue is actually playing it! I have no clue where to start with such a task and how to do so
By videos like this is why I chose to play this game... and it was one of the most frustating experienice I have had. I can sum up why of this on one single thing: how it decide to handle it is difficulty curve.: It suck! Beyond what you already mention about the disparity that the gigantic maps bring between mount unints and foot units, I would like to ad the fact it chose to be a story first, then a show off a software for the console, and finally a videogame. For story pourpouse at one point the game rob you of 4 of your "most definitely" best units at that time. And speaing of robbing you of stuff: Here is the Gáe Bolg, now it is gone. Here is Forseti, now it is gone. Here is the Tyrfing, now it is gone! And limiting the amount of money a unit can have to 50,000, when the most "needed to be trade" items on the game eat 4/5 of that? This game did a lot of things to advance not only the Fire Emblem franchise, but also the genre of tactics video games... but most of those things were definitely poorly executed in this game.
I recently finished this game but entirely in Japanese. I've been learning the language for a while, and i thought it'd be the best time to play a popular Japan-only title (that isn't Mother 3) and went with this since it's on the NSO SFC app. Was really impressed with this game and i hope the rumored remake does it justice.
This game is one of my important memory since my teenage age. I remember I took more than 80 hours to beat the game. Cry when all the characters got killed at the middle of game. Appreciate your hard work content!
There's an extremely good counter for horse Canto you didn't know. In every case against groups of horses, there's a place on the map with a lot of trees. Forests completely negate enemy Canto.

Amazing video, few things to add : -Maybe you knew this later after the upload , - Spoiler the ending - Lewyn in 2nd generation is not the man you think he is. Search in UA-cam : "All Opening Scenes Fire Emblem Genealogy Of The Holy War " , these you were supposed to unlock each after replaying the game set amount of times. Only in here you will know excatly what actually happened to Lewyn. This would explains why Lewyn acted way out of charecter espicially to Ced + that one last conversation between Silph and Lewyn at the ending , little Silph knew it somehow. - In chapter one, there is a hidden conversation if you did not let Sigure pass throgh the forset preventing Deirdre from spawning. Take down the castle and you will get an intresting dialogue.
I wouldn't call Arvis redeemable just because he helped Seliph to succeed does not redeem him from his past actions even if he was being used as a part of a larger plot he still decided with his own will to do what he did.
To add to the game of thrones similarities, both have a sprawling continent ruled by an incestuous dynasty of light haired people who claim to have some relation to dragons, the main protagonists of the latter generation is the wayward son of an honorable leader who is the rightful heir of a kingdom and has an unknowing relative in the form of a strange light haired girl with magic royal lineage who has an abusive brother and wanders the world, and the protagonist of the first generation has a dead sister married to his best friend. Well Lyanna wasn’t actually married to Robert but it’s essentially the same ida.
Mounted units from this point onward are pretty much on par with their foot counterparts or better in stats too, just as an fyi. GBA in particular will show this.
After having played and watched a lets play of this game, I sincerely don't get most of the love for the first gen's story. I'm not calling it bad, just not the peak of the series.

Project Naga has two available patches, one for a headered rom, the other for unheadered. Be very sure whether the rom you aquired is one or the other and use the appropriate patch.
The best Fire Emblem game ever made, hopefully they do a 100% faithful remaster with a few QoL improvements... Also, I wish they keep the same 2D style they had here. Awesome video by the way :D

Im not a fan of how much time you spend on the recap. The issue is for a lot of it you are simply reccaping the story instead of analysing it. Given this is meant to be for people who've played the game, wouldn't you assume they already know about this already? And even ignoring that your video would be much better if you mixed the recap with the analysis instead of keeping them separate. I also don't know what you mean by foot units having better combat, only a few of them are actually all that powerful and most of the best combat units are mounted. Also cavalry units were still OP in fe1-3, but admittedly using them properly wasn't as easy as in fe4
These videos are not meant solely for people who have already played the games. In my opinion, too much FE content is geared towards people who are already familiar with the series, which I think contributes to its continual niche status. Time codes are put in for an audience who already knows the story, they are on screen for a solid amount of time, and are located in the description. It's not perfect, but segmenting the videos in this way is part of my goal of covering not only my experience of these games, but also what they even contain and their impact for the uninitiated. Combining both the story and my analysis at the same time would still involve covering events that veterans will already know. I think it sticks out the most in this video because, well, it's FE4, which means an especially dense plot. I do agree with you now on the other parts of what you said. I started this game on my phone after having played later fire emblem games for years. The idea of having to move that many units so far across each map was what stopped me from playing after the first chapter. Glad to watch this though, it certainly filled me in on some important moments in gaming.
I personally prefer the Canto(r) ability in Engage. It's still Over powered as heck, but since it's an unlockable skill you get from Sigurd (ironically enough), it means you have to spend resources on getting it. Further more, it just adds 2 movement after an attack, no matter how far you moved. Lastly, you are limited to only two equipped skills, which means you have to sacrifice something. Unless you sync with Sigurd, which grants you Canto for free, but you are then limited to one character, and only as long as you have Sigurd of course.
One of the coolest things about this game is the fact that you seize EVERY SINGLE CASTLE IN JUGDRAL. So you see that huge map and thinks "boy, that's a lot of places to go" and you just go there and get them all.
They aren't just castles mind you, they're castle towns. Since you literally play on the entire map, every castle is a town. That's why they all have the "go to town" option. If they do remake genealogy, they need to take the battalions from 3 houses and add them into the game, even if it's just cosmetic. Really show the scale of everything. The largest maps in the series. If each character was leading a battalion into battle on top of that... that's literally perfect.
Random thoughts; It's funny how you jumble up all of the various "stages of localization." Like for instance you say "Langobalt" which is a very early fan translation, "Raquesis" which is a result of Awakening's rushed localization of old games, and something else that is a recent change but I forget what it was. I havent played project Naga in a while so idk how up to date it is with its translations but I'm sure its their fault. Nothing wrong with that though, I just think its cute and funny. Hearing your perspective as someone playing through the games chronologically is super interesting. I started in the middle, fell off, picked up again, went back to the games that I missed in the middle, went back to the games before my first game, and then just followed the series from there. So I had a mix of "oh, this is where this comes from" and "this is an interesting, modern change" but for you pretty much everything is "wow this is an interesting change from the last game" It makes my heart happy to see you played this game blind for two reasons. First is obviously the story. I personally experienced this game for the first time through a lets play and I'm glad for it because I got all the gameplay mechanics explained to me as the game went on, but I got to experience the story spoiler-free. I'm both glad and sad that I didn't get to figure out the mechanics for myself or do pairings that I wanted to do but I have a feeling I would have been put off by the mechanics had I played it blind. It's cool that you figuringout the frankly somewhat obscure mechanics of the game didn't hurt your opinion of the game much if at all.
I know that even in the voice acted games they pronounce the name Leif ss Leef, but that's not how the name is pronounce... Lei wouldn't be pronounced "lee" would it? A closer approximation of how it would be pronounced in Norwegian is Leyf
Not gonna lie, it's always an emotional train when your whole squad literally gets wiped for the sake of plot... _Think of all the time spent leveling them carefully, the character building and build-up..._ Oh yeah, I look forward to playing this for sure.
Leveling up DOES pay off in the second generation, so don't be bummed by the plot twist. Second gen characters are godly compared to the first gen ones, which make the vengeance all the more satisfying.
I just finished playing this game for the first time and came to check out your retrospective, and overall I think you nailed it, but I disagree about the lovers. You say that the optimal way to play in terms of gaining love point is to spend the first 50 turns having your units stand next to each other, but other than chapter 8 I completed every map in the game in under 50 turns and every woman in my army ended up with a lover (often times a really good one), and I also played blindly with no idea of who good pairings were. I ended up with Holyn/Ayra, Erin/Lewyn, Midir/Bridgit, Aideen/Jamke, and Sylvia/Alec which all seemed to be pretty good pairings and that's without ever spending turns just having units wait together ( other than throughout the maps in general, for example Holyn and Ayra were an easy pair because having the same move meant they'd just always be standing together). Just a thought.

Funnily enough, your information on Lewyn's survival isn't quite correct. According to one of the *many* title screen interludes, Lewyn was literally brought back by the god Holsety himself. Lewyn is only in gen 2 by literal divine intervention.
Even Gods pick favorites. Holsety has good taste. I too would revive Lewyn or Finn if Finn ever died.
Lewyn's possession by Forseti is a weird story. The stuff Lewyn says to Seliph sounds like the things he'd say to Sigurd in the past but at the same time, he's also nullified of most of his emotions. He can't go back to Silesse probably because Forseti will leave Lewyn's body so he entrusts his position as king to Ced. What would happen after Forseti left his body would be unclear as Lewyn would either drop dead or return back to his senses.

Oh boy, you're playing Thracia next. Be warned, that game is absolutely merciless to blind players. But it's also one of the most mechanically complex and interesting of them all.
Great work on this video. I tried to get into Genealogy a couple of times, but there was always something that put me off. Chapter 2 in particular kinda broke me with its intended path of progression. Seeing such a passionate and thoughtful analysis of it helps me understand why this game is so beloved, even if I just can't seem to get into it myself. I'm really looking forward to seeing how you tackle Thracia now.
I think Thracia is one of the worst games in the franchise. I find that people give it too much of a pass for being difficult, and while some of the innovations are cool like capture, stealing weapons, having no money and fatigue, it easily has the absolute worst mechanics in the series that allows the player to break the game like PCC, laughably broken skills and weapons, movement stars and all-20 caps. On repeat playthroughs, I do find most other games in the series easy even on the hardest difficulty, but I don't think Thracia is the right kind of difficulty, because it feels like you are meant to use every exploit from your first playthrough rather than picking up on them by yourself.
I have to agree that when playing blind, you'll be absolutely curb stomped with just how merciless it can be.
However, the difficulty is a charm in itself that actually works well with Leif's journey.
Most of the time, you're escaping from an actual threat whether it be Galzus or the seemingly infinite number of reinforcements.
The enemies are much more threatening, and the challenges (that can be optional) can be so difficult that it's fair not to attempt to overcome unless the player has had a second playthrough or more.
So in other words, to win then the player has to be like Leif.
Not as good as those with more experience, feeling the loss of comrades that wished to serve your cause, and best of all to have the determination to overcome overwhelming odds.
I think that's cool in itself.
The first playthrough is always the toughest. There's no hand holding. There's no guarantee that you'd get all the best items or all the available recruitable characters. There's not even a guarantee that all your characters will survive.
However, in the back of one's mind, one would play again just to make sure they saved that one character, steal every single one of Reinhardt's weapons, or making a meme unit like Ronan into an absolute beast despite being an infantry.
The second playthrough, after learning the requirements for certain recruitments and to efficiently play the game after knowing more, it gets a lot easier.
Thracia 776 is a typical "Nintendo Hard" game. Where it's only through past experiences does it make the game a little easier yet still challenging regardless.

Man, having come from the newer fire emblems (all the gba ones, POR, RD, and 3 houses), FE4 is a game that was way ahead of its time. There are so many possibilities and different outcomes compared to even the newer games. It's hard having come from the GBA fire emblems due to the fear of missing out on making the best characters. The GBA games were so simple and easy compared to FE 4. It's really stressful, but I'm going to just play it without a care so that I can enjoy it.

Generation 2 is way less interesting but it does offer the best Camus of all Fire Emblem Games in the character of Ishtar.

Note: This is from the games, the Mitsuki Oosawa manga is non-canon and changed the fates of several characters here, and will not include those.
-Sigurd: killed at belhalla
-Alec: killed at belhalla
-Naoise: killed at belhalla
-Arden: killed at belhalla
-Lex: killed at belhalla
-Midir: killed at belhalla
-Chulainn/Holyn: killed at belhalla
-Beowolf: killed at belhalla
-Dew: killed at belhalla

-Father Claud: most likely killed at belhalla
-Lewyn: killed by Manfroy at Belhalla (revealed in the opening after beating the game several times), but was resurrected by Forsetti. It's unclear whether it was really Lewyn or Forsetti, or a combination of both. Likely the latter as Lewyn seemed very cold-hearted to his children and his indifference to Erinys' death (if you paired him with her). However if he talks with Tine (if you married him to Tailtiu), he cries upon hearing what happened to Tailtiu, showing that the old-Lewyn is perhaps still there. At the end of the game, he leaves the company to go on his own journey. Seliph strangely calls him Forsetti, implying that it really is the god, but this contradicts his interactions with Tine, so who really knows.
-Ayra, unknown. There are many theories as to what happened to her. Turned to stone, escaped Belhalla but died later, etc. But according to one of her lines in FEH, she says she fought to the end with Sigurd implying she died at belhalla, but nothing is confirmed. Larcei in gen 2 scolds her brother saying that she believes that Ayra is still alive.
-Aideen: survived Belhalla and helped raise Seliph with the others in Isaach
-Deirdre: was present at Belhalla but on the Arvis's side. She was killed by a possessed-Julius about ten years later, having regained her memories of Sigurd by then.
-Lachesis: Escaped with Finn to Leonster. It is heavily speculated and implicated that they were lovers and that Finn fathered Nanna. Several years before FE5 begins she leaves Finn, Nanna, and Leif to return to Isaach so she can see Diarmuid, however vanished in the Yied Desert. Her fate is unknown, but Diarmuid says that she might still be alive. A lot of theories speculate she was attacked and turned to stone. This also likely where Finn disappeared to in his ending, to look for her.
-Brigid: survived Belhalla but lost her memories and became the swordmaster Eyvel. She was turned to stone, but was restored. She eventually regains her memories and reunites with her children several years after the war.
-Sylvia: survived Belhalla, but left her children in an orphanage and completely vanished. Likely to protect them as she was being hunted down due to being a part of Sigurd's army. Her fate is unknown, though theories say she was turned to stone.
-Erinys: Dies between Belhalla and the start of gen 2. But if you married her to Lewyn (FE5 makes this pairing canon), there's more detail to it. Queen Lahnya died shortly after Belhalla, leaving Erinys as the Queen of Silesse, since Lewyn left her. She died several years later from illness, longing to see her husband again.
-Tailtiu: by far the saddest ending imo, she was taken into custody by her sister-in-law Hilda, who was the mother of Ishtar and Ishtore. She was regularly abused and beaten, and often taking the brunt of the abuse away from her daughter, Tine. She eventually died from depression and illness, protecting Tine until the end.
-Azel: unknown, though likely taken into custody by arvis due to still harboring affection for him
-Quan: killed in yied massacre
-Ethlyn: killed in yied massacre
-Finn: disappeared into the Yied desert for three years after Leif became king of New Thracia, probably to look for Lachesis
While Gen 1 was the peak of the story, it still set up some great plot-threads to explore in Gen 2, like Leif having to reunite with his abducted sister, and the tragic irony that Seliph will have to fight his own brother to prevent Loptyr's revival.
There's plenty of QOA improvements a remake can bring to the experience, but this game still holds up surprisingly well.
Sigurd was great because he was a deconstruction of the typical Fire Emblem Protagonist (Along with being as far as I see, the ONLY playable Cornelius character! Cornelius being Marth's father and the trend setter of the "your dad/mom/parental figure" dies for the Lord's character development trope! Jeralt is only playable in 3Hopes which is a spin-off so that doesn't count! and Chrom doesn't die, it's his first timeline self that is the Cornelius; I Really want a Playable Cornelius like Sigurd again! Really hope Intelligent does so in a future Emblem after Engage! This is saying this UNDER the assumption the next one isn't a FE4 remake like the rumors and leak suggest) while Seliph is a reconstruction of the Trope! Seliph works BECAUSE of the groundwork set by Sigurd and Gen 1! I mean really, the shock that you LOSE and the villains actually win and rule till Seliph grows up was a BIG surprise and enhances the story because of it! Especially as unlike the usual! We the player are more SAVVY to the plot points then Seliph because to Seliph, it would be the "Beginning of his story/game"....but to us it's just the mid point POSING as a Game Start! Plus Seliph is abit more grounded then his Father! Which is what is suppose to make the "Deconstruction/Reconstruction" work as Seliph is doing his best to AVOID the mistakes Sigurd made in Gen 1. Sigurd's really exciting because of those flaws, while Seliph can come off as "boring" because he's playing it safe! But that's pretty realistic, no one is going to want to follow the failure of their predeccessors!
If a remake is incoming, I hope they enhance on these's themes more!

But em I wrong, Cornelius was the father of the hero, previous wielder of the legendary weapon the hero will use later as it was taken by the bad guy's AFTER they backstabbing and betrayed the Cornelius! The hero avenges his Cornelius father by killing the one who did the backstabbing (In Marth's case Jiol, in Seliph, Arvis).
If it quacks its a duck my man! Sigurd the first half of the game might as well be you Playing Cornelius up
till his end.

I decided to play Thracia 776 right after Chapter 5 of Genealogy, to continue through the FE timeline in chronological order. It's probably the hardest game in the series, at least if you go in blind. I think that I've had to reload my saves at least 40 times already, and I'm only on Chapter 7 haha. As for FE4, I honestly think it was the most enjoyable game in the series out of all of the ones I've played so far, and I'm still only halfway done with the game lol. I feel that many critics of the game are too used to the more modern titles and their mechanics and often don't come with an open mind, losing interest on the game due to its differences from the others.

The reason cavalry is considered so broken is because the vast majority of games in the series (basically the first half of the franchise) are actually pretty dang easy once you know what you're doing, so even in games where cavalry _do_ have lower stats than foot units (this is not a hard and fast rule), once you've gotten good enough at the game that you don't _need_ higher stat units to get past obstacles, the sheer speed at which mounted units can "get shit done" simply renders foot units at a major disadvantage in high-level play.
I feel like mounted units are alright at the state they are, is just that the tier lists and the general conception heavily favors ltc runs
It's the same reason why armor knights are consider bad even though most regular players won't mind their biggest weaknesses like their low movement
Though if you want a class that actually does need a buff look no further than the archers, 2~3 range should be the norm

I find it slightly weird that you sometimes use the non-officially localized names . Sometimes I get it because we don't have the official localization of every characters name but others are slightly weird.
I started playing the emulated fan translation of this game, and feel bad that I bounced off of it as hard as I did. The arena grind and large maps just made everything feel incredibly slow to a point that has made it hard to push through. I would love to see the story of this game given the modern Echoes treatment to adjust some of the gameplay ideas to more modern sensibilities and giving the story the space to breath it deserves. I would play an Echoes remake of this game in an instant.
Yeah thats the problem. I was stoked for the echoes remake because it would be such a improvement to playability, but fanboys for this one forget alot that is true for the series til gba era. And this games og is tedious af and needs QoL improvements significantly.

It's amazing to see how clearly the early FE games succeeded and improved on each other and were refinements of Kaga's vision. It's super cool. I'd like to imagine he was proud.
I remember loading up a ROM of Genealogy of the Holy War (no translation) and just being blown away at the sheer scale of the map. That's the one thing I never forgot. Modern FE is comparatively so scaled down - it'd be crazy to see a new Fire Emblem that brought the scale back to this game's level.
Speaking of Modern FE, I'm in love with Three Houses now, and when you started talking about the "Holy Blood" and the image of the Holy Blood crest-wheel came on screen I nearly did a spit-take. The steelbook and artbook both heavily focus on a very similar image to represent the Goddess Sothis and the 10 Heroes' Crests.

In terms of gen 1 Vs gen 2, having played both jugdral games, you can really feel that gen 1 was designed first and given the most care in terms of story:deeper characters,a more interesting narrative and honestly a tiny bit more balanced
Gen 2 has its nice points but you can really feel that Thracia was a necessary game to flesh out the story as in fe4 it's kind of full of lore dumps by "lewyn" that are nice yes but do feel they cool have been implemented a bit better
Thracia in my opinion is the prosthetic leg for gen 2 as it gives you a real look into what the empire was before the Scion of light
Its a much more brutal experience as it difficulty really works in favour of its story as you can really sense the desperation in each encounter

You can feel how the game started to surpass the limitations of both cartridge and development time the further you progress in the game
It sure is something special... but not necessarily in a good way. Yes, the plot is easily the best the series has offered yet. But the gameplay is really bad. Horse Emblem, gigantic slogs of maps, ambush spawns at their worst, obtuse as hell romance system, arena grindfest, Great Shield BS, no trading, enormous blobs of enemies rushing all at once at you, cheap panic baits every time you seize a castle, OP secret items that you're not gonna find without a guide, enemies autoequipping the weapon that counters yours when you can't do the same, infinite status staves galore, enemy thieves who steal ALL your hard-earned money even if you attack first, nonsensical individual wallets, trios of stupidly overpowered enemy sisters, Ms I-One-Shot-You-With-100-Accuracy-Ishtar... The list goes on and on and on. This is the worst FE game for a first-time player bar none. It's pain and suffering. Sure, not everything in the game is bad, but whatever good there is just doesn't compensate all this bad shit. Genealogy of the Holy War is a good movie/book but a bad game.
This game and the sequel had the best stories if you ask me, the world feels realllly fleshed out
I feel like such a weirdo for not liking this game. It seems unanimously loved but I find it extremely frustrating. The story was pretty great but that alone can't salvage gameplay that infuriates me.
Don't worry, I'm not a big fan of this one either. I tried to get into it multiple times, but the slower pace, gigantic maps, and frequent swarms of enemies are annoying. Incidentally, if Nintendo makes a new Echoes game, I feel like FE4 here would be the perfect candidate. They fixed a lot of problems with the original Gaiden, after all. For the most part!

Yeah, I think it's a decent game to start out on. The only issue is that it isn't really representative of the rest of the series, but it may appeal to you because of that if you haven't finished any of the others.

If I could offer some light criticism, the story analysis section of this video feels like it leans too heavily into synopsis. I'm more interested in hearing your thoughts, feelings, and interpretations on the story over a plot recital.

The plot reading is a synopsis, followed by the analysis. Do you think it would be better if the two were linked? I am hoping to turn these story sections into plot rundowns later down the line, so I'm hesitant. I more want people to get up to speed with what happens since these aren't just made for the Fire Emblem community.

I can sum up why of this on one single thing: how it decide to handle it is difficulty curve.: It suck!
Beyond what you already mention about the disparity that the gigantic maps bring between mount unints and foot units, I would like to ad the fact it chose to be a story first, then a show off a software for the console, and finally a videogame.
For story pourpouse at one point the game rob you of 4 of your "most definitely" best units at that time. And speaing of robbing you of stuff: Here is the Gáe Bolg, now it is gone. Here is Forseti, now it is gone. Here is the Tyrfing, now it is gone!
And limiting the amount of money a unit can have to 50,000, when the most "needed to be trade" items on the game eat 4/5 of that?
This game did a lot of things to advance not only the Fire Emblem franchise, but also the genre of tactics video games... but most of those things were definitely poorly executed in this game.

I recently finished this game but entirely in Japanese. I've been learning the language for a while, and i thought it'd be the best time to play a popular Japan-only title (that isn't Mother 3) and went with this since it's on the NSO SFC app. Was really impressed with this game and i hope the rumored remake does it justice.
This game is one of my important memory since my teenage age. I remember I took more than 80 hours to beat the game. Cry when all the characters got killed at the middle of game. Appreciate your hard work content!

In every case against groups of horses, there's a place on the map with a lot of trees. Forests completely negate enemy Canto.

-Maybe you knew this later after the upload , - Spoiler the ending - Lewyn in 2nd generation is not the man you think he is. Search in UA-cam : "All Opening Scenes Fire Emblem Genealogy Of The Holy War
" , these you were supposed to unlock each after replaying the game set amount of times. Only in here you will know excatly what actually happened to Lewyn. This would explains why Lewyn acted way out of charecter espicially to Ced + that one last conversation between Silph and Lewyn at the ending , little Silph knew it somehow.
- In chapter one, there is a hidden conversation if you did not let Sigure pass throgh the forset preventing Deirdre from spawning. Take down the castle and you will get an intresting dialogue.

I wouldn't call Arvis redeemable just because he helped Seliph to succeed does not redeem him from his past actions even if he was being used as a part of a larger plot he still decided with his own will to do what he did.
To add to the game of thrones similarities, both have a sprawling continent ruled by an incestuous dynasty of light haired people who claim to have some relation to dragons, the main protagonists of the latter generation is the wayward son of an honorable leader who is the rightful heir of a kingdom and has an unknowing relative in the form of a strange light haired girl with magic royal lineage who has an abusive brother and wanders the world, and the protagonist of the first generation has a dead sister married to his best friend. Well Lyanna wasn’t actually married to Robert but it’s essentially the same ida.
Mounted units from this point onward are pretty much on par with their foot counterparts or better in stats too, just as an fyi. GBA in particular will show this.
After having played and watched a lets play of this game, I sincerely don't get most of the love for the first gen's story. I'm not calling it bad, just not the peak of the series.

Make sure you patched the ROM correctly, sorry if this is too lste
Project Naga has two available patches, one for a headered rom, the other for unheadered. Be very sure whether the rom you aquired is one or the other and use the appropriate patch.
The best Fire Emblem game ever made, hopefully they do a 100% faithful remaster with a few QoL improvements...
Also, I wish they keep the same 2D style they had here.

FE 4 put FE 1,2,3 to the corner of shame. FE 4 is still the best game in my opinion.
Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War is represented in Super Smash Bros Ultimate by means of four Spirits (Sigurd, Deirdre, Seliph, and Julius) and one music track (“Edge of Adversity”).
Im not a fan of how much time you spend on the recap. The issue is for a lot of it you are simply reccaping the story instead of analysing it. Given this is meant to be for people who've played the game, wouldn't you assume they already know about this already?
And even ignoring that your video would be much better if you mixed the recap with the analysis instead of keeping them separate.
I also don't know what you mean by foot units having better combat, only a few of them are actually all that powerful and most of the best combat units are mounted.
Also cavalry units were still OP in fe1-3, but admittedly using them properly wasn't as easy as in fe4
These videos are not meant solely for people who have already played the games. In my opinion, too much FE content is geared towards people who are already familiar with the series, which I think contributes to its continual niche status. Time codes are put in for an audience who already knows the story, they are on screen for a solid amount of time, and are located in the description. It's not perfect, but segmenting the videos in this way is part of my goal of covering not only my experience of these games, but also what they even contain and their impact for the uninitiated. Combining both the story and my analysis at the same time would still involve covering events that veterans will already know. I think it sticks out the most in this video because, well, it's FE4, which means an especially dense plot.

I started this game on my phone after having played later fire emblem games for years. The idea of having to move that many units so far across each map was what stopped me from playing after the first chapter. Glad to watch this though, it certainly filled me in on some important moments in gaming.

I personally prefer the Canto(r) ability in Engage. It's still Over powered as heck, but since it's an unlockable skill you get from Sigurd (ironically enough), it means you have to spend resources on getting it. Further more, it just adds 2 movement after an attack, no matter how far you moved. Lastly, you are limited to only two equipped skills, which means you have to sacrifice something. Unless you sync with Sigurd, which grants you Canto for free, but you are then limited to one character, and only as long as you have Sigurd of course.
One of the coolest things about this game is the fact that you seize EVERY SINGLE CASTLE IN JUGDRAL. So you see that huge map and thinks "boy, that's a lot of places to go" and you just go there and get them all.
They aren't just castles mind you, they're castle towns. Since you literally play on the entire map, every castle is a town. That's why they all have the "go to town" option. If they do remake genealogy, they need to take the battalions from 3 houses and add them into the game, even if it's just cosmetic. Really show the scale of everything. The largest maps in the series. If each character was leading a battalion into battle on top of that... that's literally perfect.
It's pretty much arvis fault that he got into this situation.
Random thoughts;
It's funny how you jumble up all of the various "stages of localization." Like for instance you say "Langobalt" which is a very early fan translation, "Raquesis" which is a result of Awakening's rushed localization of old games, and something else that is a recent change but I forget what it was. I havent played project Naga in a while so idk how up to date it is with its translations but I'm sure its their fault. Nothing wrong with that though, I just think its cute and funny.
Hearing your perspective as someone playing through the games chronologically is super interesting. I started in the middle, fell off, picked up again, went back to the games that I missed in the middle, went back to the games before my first game, and then just followed the series from there. So I had a mix of "oh, this is where this comes from" and "this is an interesting, modern change" but for you pretty much everything is "wow this is an interesting change from the last game"
It makes my heart happy to see you played this game blind for two reasons. First is obviously the story. I personally experienced this game for the first time through a lets play and I'm glad for it because I got all the gameplay mechanics explained to me as the game went on, but I got to experience the story spoiler-free. I'm both glad and sad that I didn't get to figure out the mechanics for myself or do pairings that I wanted to do but I have a feeling I would have been put off by the mechanics had I played it blind. It's cool that you figuringout the frankly somewhat obscure mechanics of the game didn't hurt your opinion of the game much if at all.
I know that even in the voice acted games they pronounce the name Leif ss Leef, but that's not how the name is pronounce... Lei wouldn't be pronounced "lee" would it? A closer approximation of how it would be pronounced in Norwegian is Leyf
Not gonna lie, it's always an emotional train when your whole squad literally gets wiped for the sake of plot...

Leveling up DOES pay off in the second generation, so don't be bummed by the plot twist. Second gen characters are godly compared to the first gen ones, which make the vengeance all the more satisfying.

I just finished playing this game for the first time and came to check out your retrospective, and overall I think you nailed it, but I disagree about the lovers. You say that the optimal way to play in terms of gaining love point is to spend the first 50 turns having your units stand next to each other, but other than chapter 8 I completed every map in the game in under 50 turns and every woman in my army ended up with a lover (often times a really good one), and I also played blindly with no idea of who good pairings were. I ended up with Holyn/Ayra, Erin/Lewyn, Midir/Bridgit, Aideen/Jamke, and Sylvia/Alec which all seemed to be pretty good pairings and that's without ever spending turns just having units wait together ( other than throughout the maps in general, for example Holyn and Ayra were an easy pair because having the same move meant they'd just always be standing together). Just a thought.
Yeah wasting turns doing this is completely unnecessary, I can't really even imagine playing the game this way.
