I use this technique all the time with one caveat; I use the safety pins so it can't crush me if I lose my footing or if I fatigue. In this way, you can tie the j-hook back so it doesn't interfere with the lift.
This cured my lowerback pain

I have leg press attachment for Smith machine and lay on two mats. I also use saftety stops in case your feet slip or can't get the last rep.
Can you do these with single legs, high reps… or is that a horrible idea?
Best to make a custom heavy duty pad under you... you can also make a low profile bench shaped perfect..just remove when your done...there are maybe 100 exercises that can be done on smith machine...
