I just love about Opals that you can get lost in their infinite beauty, you can study a piece for years and still be surprised. Just the sheer beauty and how unique they are.
@@blackopaldirect I was going to believe it or not suggest this movie to you to watch...yes your correct with the high volume yelling over each other was annoying but the ending was very unpredictable 🤙
Black Opal Direct Drea Justin hi, thanks for the great video mate. It is always appreciated. How much would be that Torch’s price if you don’t mind me to ask?
Why didn’t he just sell his jewelry to pay the mobsters? Or set up a heist with them and get the insurance money and they get the stolen jewelry?? So many plot holes
And this is why I’m rock tumbling opal straight from pre polish to final after shaping, I add small ceramic pellets to cushion the opal so those pieces of ceramic can get into those holes that used to contain sand but you can get out the sand with a diamond tipped ball drill, and let the ceramic media get into the crevices to make a Nordic opal gem, for those stones that are large but have so much sand in them. Turn them into polished nuggets!
I love black opal direct .. I dont remember how i found you i had no opal knowledge what so ever before, but i just binge watch you daily it is facinating to learn and watch.. Thank you
I'm glad you got the little stone out of that. I couldn't see how you could get anything from it. That's the experience that you have I am sure!! I like watching you tire a chunk into a beautiful stone!
I love everything Opal, I just wish I could afford it to cut as a hobby Lapidarist. I love rubbing "scraps" and cutoffs to find the beauty within! I have found faces, landscape scenes, all kinds of things in scraps. I have cigar boxes of 50 year old stock from when my father and I went to various rockshops back in the day. Thank you Justin for sharing your time, talent, and insured with us!

Nice little beauty there. You look like you are feeling better by the way. So glad you are feeling better. I would be interested on the flashlight "torch " if it were to go up on your BOD site. Thank you for what you do.
I always make the setting edge but not only for the jewelry to set better but because sharp edge is easier to chip and round edge makes the cab more stable :) great video cheers

Glad to know that I'm not the only one even though I hate seeing it happen to anyone! It's very hard to get a nice stone especially on a budget but it's a real kick in the gut when you think you finally are going to get a beautiful stone and it's full of sand or potch.
Still a beautiful gem even though its small.. I know your talent saved that alot of people may have thought it wasnt going to make anything good at all
It seems to me your skill and experience did this little rock a big favour by making it something to cherish. Now if it's karma the next one should be a exquisite too, but huge!
Get a pair of V-blocks and carefully mount them on a borad; one hold the fold dop,the other for the new dop. Get the new dop ready, warm up the stone on the dop, and use the v-blocks to align the dops for the transfer. When its cooled, snap off the old dop. The new dop will be perfectly 'faced'; the back properly aligned to the front dome. Dop transfer tools are used for diamonds, but but 3d-printed v-blocks could be your friends.

J.A.Ratt85 yes I feel the same, I have my grandmother’s brooch and has the most amazing opal, I so want to put on necklace a wear but hubby thinks keep it together
J.A.Ratt85 Your grandma would want you to use it and enjoy it. If you would enjoy it more as a pendant, change it. Brooches aren’t as popular as they once were.
Yeah, I never dop my stones after doing the polished dome just to do the back. I always do by hand. But then again, I've been cabbing stones for over a decade.😁
I’m the same way, I don’t bother with dopping stones at all. I prefer being able to feel it in my hands as I’m cutting. And I’ve been doing it for over a decade also 😁
I use Elmer's water based glue. Build up a pad of glue on the dop stick . Then one drop of glue then the opal. Once the glue has dried, paint the surface of the glue with 2 coats of diluted shellac. When finished polishing ,wipe glue with alcohol to remove shellac. Then place doped end of stick in Luke warm water ,the glue will partially dissolve. I've cut a small amount opal, including Welo. This technique removes heat from the equation, some dop waxesare just to hot.
Do you sell stones? How much for a very small stone? Dream of mine!! Dad is a silversmith. But I haven't seen the talent in me. Just an appreciation and knowledge for gemstones.

I am surprised that the miners dont clean up/pre polish the rough opals, as they would get more money for them. love the vid, its kept me focused on these lumps of rough rock as they gradually turn into a beautiful gem.

At about 6:37, you are examining the top of the stone. I see a rose out of the sand that you maybe could have carved out a bit to make it stand out.

ok, Justin. again question time.
A while back "Metho" was changed for sale in Australia. They changed the alcohol in "metho" from wood alcohol (CH3OH) to sugar alcohol (C2H5OH).
They did this because people were drinking "Metho" which when based on wood alcohol is incredibly bad for you, poisonous or lethal even.
So the question is this.
Does the new "Metho" work as a gem cutting tool / melt wax as good as the original?
Yes it does
So, you're a barista too, Justin? :-)
