    • @KateCarew
      @KateCarew 5 років тому

Pulitzer Opal I’d argue that generosity is any gesture that the recipient feels a sense of gratitude from? Sacrifice isn’t necessary for something to be considered generous. Generosity should come from a genuine place of wanting to give and not receive in kind, purely and simply. It’s a matter of semantics and how words “feel” to us and our subjective connotations are entirely biased I suppose. If we recategorize the criteria befitting generosity then our world is far less generous than I’d like and since generosity is often quite satisfying and joy inducing I’d hate to think it’s required to include suffering or deprivation to have occurred? Being a person who enjoys giving and also being aware of the fact I NEED very very little in life it’s quite easy to give and enjoy the freedom in that, it’s quite liberating once you realize that sharing what you’ve got with others is sort of the whole impetus behind acquiring things...I’ll agree that sacrifice is the highest form of generosity, it’s top shelf so to speak but I’ve been raised with not just a sense of noblesse oblige but that it’s a moral imperative to give what one can in particular if it makes a substantial impact on the recipients’ end.
So, if my matters are in order and I’ve got a hundred dollars slated for a nice dinner (whoopsidoodle)and my friend is going to lose a car to repossession I’d be a real jerk to not offer that money because to me what may be a pittance could be life altering for them. Of course the caveat being I don’t rub it the gift or calm it a loan or dwell on how little it means to me because that’s boasting and rubbing in an asymmetrical power balance not to mention highlighting a lack of reciprocity on their part and eliminating their opportunity to repay the kindness in whatever way they see fit. I’ve given a lot away over the years and I can’t say for certain that I’ve evened out financially because I don’t keep track but I suspect I’ve made out quite well and the relationships I’ve forged are worth more than any material good I’ve parted with, and the unexpected spontaneous returns I’ve been delighted to discover have touched me quite deeply. I’ve generally thought that I must offer gestures to those who need something if I can provide it...and if I can’t afford to lose something I don’t offer it, that’s when I recognized I don’t need a lot and most of what I have can be shuffled around as needed and to be honest I’ve only been screwed a couple times, regretting none of it.
I think your stance is quite humble and indicative of a particularly generous nature albeit one that’s ambivalent about accolades associated with it? By drawing this line in the sand you’re denying yourself the virtue of being kind, of being giving. We can create our own mythology however we’d like, I just think it’s peculiar and rather tragic to pigeonhole yourself into personality limbo by not calling it what it is, shoving your kindness into a void because of the notion it has to hurt to be worth anything is CRAZY!!
Pat yourself on the back, go ahead and carry the mantle of being a mensch it’s okay, if you’re seen as such isn’t there an accuracy in the estimation of the masses?
Then again, to each their own eh? Who am I to tell you how to feel or think about yourself?! The gall! I mean no disrespect, I just hate to see a person sell themselves short when they don’t deserve it.
I feel like I have dug a hole here, and my defense of the word has somehow exposed a side to giving that makes it sound like my reasoning is because it makes me feel good which suddenly turns giving into taking :/
I won’t list acts off in a pathetic attempt to prove a point but I’ll say that I give to the homeless and those who beg, I don’t withhold money etc because I’ve deemed them to be addicts or lazy folk who probably have a house and all the stuff people say to justify looking away while dehumanizing them. I give what I can, sometimes it’s just groceries, sometimes it’s a couple bucks and I figure again, not my place to judge and if a person finds themselves begging strangers well shoot, they’re harder up than I am. I’m surrounded by baffled friends and family confounded by my urge to “throw money at bums” but I can’t deny humanity and what it must feel like to stand out in the bitter midwestern cold and hope a total stranger throws a meager amount my way, in the act itself I see need so, to me a five dollar bill might be NOTHING more than a pack of TP but to the person I hand it to it might equal a day out of the elements...I did this very thing at the end of winter and saw the girl walk right into the McDonald’s nearby and buy a coffee, on my way home from work she was still inside, out of curiosity I went in to get a happy meal prize for my stepdaughter and the woman approached asking for a hug, she said that she was able to buy something every 90 minutes enabling her to remain without loitering and the day was one of the polar vortex days, subzero temps etc and she was so damn grateful she wasn’t asked to leave, she didn’t buy drugs or cigarettes, she bought shelter and I was able to get her in touch with a woman’s shelter who took her in that night. Again, not saying I’m anything special, quite the opposite, we all have this capacity and if you say we just suffer to truly give you’ll find more reticence to do so, the stipulation it must hurt will only deter such gestures.
Should’ve just said I agree to disagree but keep it simple stupid isn’t in my wheelhouse.
Opals have value, people like money, assets provide security, by depleting your stockpile you weaken your reserves and boom!! What do ya know? It hurts you to give these gems away SO THERE!
      CHECK MATE!

    • @KateCarew
      @KateCarew 5 років тому

Pulitzer Opal well, I’m not going to straight up disagree with your perception of kindness and my depth is that of a teaspoon ;)
Philosophy major? He must be a masochist 😂😂😂
I’ll still think of you as generous because I want to HARRUMPH!
Is your gallery of work online to see? I’ll admit that a lot if my people are generous and they tend to give without thinking much of it, I suppose birds of a feather flock together and I’m only reminded of another’s reality when it encroaches on my bubble of innocence or naïveté whichever you choose.
Lots of people give with the ticker running and they will wait to receive, so the fact you just do it has most likely earned you a nice little reputation.
      Now, brass tacks
I cant find it!! I’m a bit of a squirrel and let’s just say I downsized from a 4,000 square foot home to a 2,000 square foot home in (ahem) 2016 and lots of stuff landed in storage.
Very very first world I get it but I’ve got a long list of things that have gone missing and the amber is on it, it’s a tragically long list...I’ll find it, and it’s rough, not sure I mentioned that?? I did a dive into the boxes and came up covered in sweat with what I thought was both the petosky and amber but of course I didn’t pack them together, that would’ve been logical, noooo, the petosky stones were in a box filled with feathers, not horsefeathers, no, just a giant box of feathers. 😂 because DUH.
I’m in the sciences by trade but an artist at heart and the hoarding, (cough cough) I mean squirreling away is how I keep materials to assemble later :)
I will send you a hunk when I unearth it, there’s too much for me to do anything with and I’d love to see what you can do, as would your audience.
I’m going to go out on a limb and internet search your other information, I feel invasive when I do it, so I’m warning you, and I may very well ENTER THE GIVEAWAY although I think I’m not deserving as maybe someone who’s never gotten to hold a chunk of it in real life?
It’s so pretty, it really is my favorite stone and I’ve worked through all the BS about not being allowed to wear it unless it a birthstone or buy it for oneself but the stain lingers...its my number one favorite natural gem, aquamarine is second, and the rest all scuttle up to be a close third with certain things that don’t appeal at all...diamonds for one. They move me not! I’d take a perfect pearl any day since they’re never tacky.
I’m going to sign off before I start waxing rhapsodic about ROCKS.
Trust me I’m looking and I’ll set a big chunk aside, it was cheap and it’s been YEARS.
I think you’re more equipped to do something with it than me at present since lapidary has taken a backseat.
I didn’t plan on leaving such an answer but I couldn’t stop.
I’m damaged by being the only child of an attorney and therapist, I’ve had to quantify and qualify everything I’ve said from birth, it’s tedious at best and despite having lots of loving friends and family I know I’m a royal pain in the butt.
I mean well...but good lord child SHUT UP!
So, apologies on the thesis, the intent was making you accept your virtue ❤️🙏🏻😂

I’ve never seen this pattern in opal before. Is it the horsefeathers pattern?

Haha! yes a couple comments mentioned their opinions on what could have been done, but mostly positive comments. I found this video funny and informative. Love your fan base also. Hope to learn more and maybe get into this my self. My 5 year old girl now loves opal so maybe I’ll make her something some day. keep up the good work!

Reminds me of the time my grandniece asked for a pegasus figure and my wife and me concocted one in one garage, it ended breaking down filling the kitchen with horsefeathers.

    L'opale, pierre de la rêverie.
Regarde moi mais ne t'attache pas,
    Je suis rondelette...
Touche moi mais ne t'attarde pas,
    Mes couleurs me brûlent...
Désire moi mais ne me croque pas,
    Mon rêve à moi...
    M'acheter mais pourquoi ?
    Était simplement de rêver...
    Mon opale,
    ...
Avec tout le respect que j'ai pour votre travail.
