“Who Wants to Live Forever” was composed by Queen guitarist Brian May and sung on the album version as a duet between himself and Freddie Mercury. It is part of the group of songs that Queen wrote for the film "Highlander" . It serves as somewhat of a “love theme” of Highlander, as it adds to the sub-plot of the movie (in the film, Freddie sings the first verse as well, unlike the album version, which has Brian singing first).
The movie is about an immortal Scottish swordsman (the Highlander) who faces off with other immortal warriors in order to obtain a coveted prize, the knowledge of all. The hero [Highlander] discovers in his first battle that he can’t die and is warned by his mentor to never fall in love because she will age and die and he won't. Unfortunately, he finds that he falls in love and he stays with her as she grows old until she dies in his arms. Her final words to him as she dies is ‘I never understood why you stayed with me". He says, ‘I see you just the same as I saw you when I first met you’.
Though this official. version if beautiful, but I still prefer the live version. You should watch Who Want to Live Forever - live at Wembley Stadium 1986" - ua-cam.com/video/Z1waL65aMOQ/v-deo.html.

Great reaction. I recommend The Show Must Go On. Written by Brian May for a dying Freddie. Can't listen to it without crying, but arguably Freddie's best vocals❤.

Beautiful song written by Brian for the Queen Soundtrack for the movie Highlander. Thank you for your reaction. The main character in the movie is immortal and he has had to spend his life watching the people he loves age and die while he remains young and continues on. Just pick any Queen song and it will be good. My favorites change from day to day. Welcome back!

Another Queen song of the 6 they wrote for Highlander, is "A Kind of Magic" credited to Roger Taylor, the drummer. The bass player, John Deacon wrote another lovely song for the movie: "One Year of Love". Freddie wrote "Princes of the Universe", which has an awesome video where they blend scenes of the movie and the lead actor with the band, and Freddie has a sword fight with him

you can never go wrong with ANY Queen song! I especially love this song since it's one of the songs Queen wrote for one of my favorite movies 'Highlander' & 'Highlander 2 The Quickening'(director's cut). Queen are one of those rare bands/groups that really don't stick to one genre, Queen is their own 'genre', of course the original lineup only(with Freddie Mercury). One of my favorite Queen songs is "These Are The Days of Our Lives" which unfortunately still makes me cry every time I watch the music video. Since it was one of the last times that Freddie was filmed & he seems to be saying goodbye to everyone at the end. Freddie was so ill & looked so sick during the making of the music video that they had to use black& white film. If you have ever watched any of their other videos or live performances you'll know about how amazing Freddie was as a Frontman you'll notice the different Freddie was in the music video for "These Are The Days Of Our Lives". Apparently Freddie had bad wound on one of his feet that made walking, moving or even standing was extremely painful for him. Yet even being sick & in pain Freddie's vocals were still awesome throughout. Technically, the song "Mother Love" is the last song that Freddie recorded in the studio before his death from AIDS in 1991.

He was HIV+ back then already I think. And no real treatment existed yet. So he knew he‘d die earlier than many his age.

@@Frida... he had hiv symptoms since 82 and was diagnosed with aids already in 87. Highlander 1 came to the movie theaters in 86, the song was written for Highlander 1, recorded in 86. The first hiv-antibody test came out 85.
So yes, he high likely knew by the time he recorded the song that he was hiv+.
There was a hysteria back then about hiv. Especially in the music and film industry. People were very aware of hiv and went testing.

Of course he was hiv positive then. He have hade the virus in the late 70 but he did not know to was hiv at the time and the symptoms he was having in the beginning was most infektions symptoms.. not symptoms of adis. That come later on. the song has nothing to do with his illness and diagnosis.
