    "Things should always be happening" is such a vital motto for TTRPG design. I'm so glad that increasingly, TTRPGs keep it in mind!

      An old one was also "Keep them poor!" meaning give adventurers a financial reason to adventure... Not always valid these days

    • @Broeckchen
      @Broeckchen Рік тому +2

      @@teddychu1177 Yeah, I prefer to ask my players what their characters aspire to and then base the incentives around that. Because not every adventurer character cares about money enough to justify the risks of adventuring. But you can almost always find something they DO care about.

    "Things should always be happening" is advice every GM/DM/Keeper/Guide should live by.

    These videos are a such a great way to get to know an RPG without having to wade through the book.

    Excellent episode. I played a short campaign of Quest at the start of the year and really enjoyed it. The story-focused system was exactly what my group of writing buddies wanted. The abilities are so fun and every character was very unique. The fact that it’s free means it can’t hurt to try it out!

    Players learn from their mistakes?! Idk that doesn't sound right.
    I love the video format and the beard is amazing. Only thing that could possibly make it better is doggos!

    Seems pretty neat, low barrier to entry, gets rid of the faff to focus on the important bits

    Love the video and would like to see more about quest. Like a one shot, create monsters, items, example of character creation, homebrew a role with features and such.

    Great video! I have been playing Quest for 2 years and it is still my favorite system! Although I do feel like it is a bit difficult to keep the characters grounded when their abilities are so damn powerful.

      It definitely leans toward more fantastical, powerful characters, for sure. Not a system I would use for every game, but for some, I love it!!

    Great video and now it seems like I need to grab another game for the shelf! As for future videos, absolutely please keep doing these kinds of guides, they're fantastic. Candid first impressions of new systems could be great too!

    First of all, I love your work! Since you asked, something that I would like is some more in depths 45 min introduction scenario of Fate, Cypher, Cortex where we can see them in action. I understand the concepts, but it's different to see them in play. (I don't like 2-4h lets play, but that's me). Also, I would love a few more narrative driven reviews for systems such as Genesys, Burning wheel, Mouseguard, etc. Otherwise, keep on doing what you're doing what you love and what drives :)

      Thanks so much!
      As far as more in depth intros to systems, that is certainly something I might get into. I've got a few ideas floating around to showcase some of my favorite systems that I'm still working out, but it is definitely something I want to explore.
      And while I don't really consider what I do "reviews" as I tend to stick to just praising games that I love without too much critical analysis, some of those are absolutely on my list to talk about. When? That's always a tough question with me. lol

    As solid as Quest is, ability bloat is definitely a thing, especially at a rate of one new ability gain after every 4-hour session. It made for a convenient excuse to also sell Role decks as a separate product. Just a minor gripe of mine.
    Other than that, Quest and EZD6 are probably the best beginner TTRPGs that I'm aware of, with ICRPG being a close second.

    • @TheDungeonNewbsGuide
      @TheDungeonNewbsGuide  Рік тому +2

      Honestly that is a valid criticism. I wrapped up a 25-ish session campaign around a month ago, and that was starting to feel like an issue at that point. Makes me feel like playing Roleless with the 20 ability limit should almost be the default once players are familiar with the system.

    Awesome video. If you're asking what I want - I want your review of One More Multiverse with their Blades in the Dark module!!!

    • @TheDungeonNewbsGuide
      @TheDungeonNewbsGuide  Рік тому +2

      I do love that module on OMM.
      However...I'll be honest, I've been holding off on my OMM overview because I've really wanted to see what more they would do with it and how they would make it more approachable with final release. I've tried getting a few friends into it, and it has been too much them. And honestly, I feel like it feels almost stagnant as far as progress right now, despite how much I might personally love playing around in it.
      Now, that could be more of a me thing, taking breaks to look at other VTTs, and just generally being too busy in life to really keep up with it. I really want to sing its praises, because even as it is I really love it for some games. I just find myself wondering if it is the right time to make a video and send folks to it, when I'm not sure it'll be approachable enough.
      I could cover all that in the video, and maybe giving it more attention would help it out. I'm not sure. And I think that uncertainty has kept me from tackling that video, especially when I have so many other topics that I feel way more confident when it comes to video ideas.
      TL;DR - I want to, but I'm unsure due to the current approachability and offerings of OMM. However, I may still just go for it.

    This system has been on my back ur er for a while. It's great to hear you talking about since I want to give it a try. Especially since it has levels of success and failure I knew I would love be interest too Dungeon Newb. Tho, are you currently running a game for it?

    • @TheDungeonNewbsGuide

      About a month ago I wrapped up a campaign for it than ran for like...15ish months, I think? Worked really well and is a system I think I'll return to again in the future, though probably for shorter campaigns or one-shots.

    While i understand it for the most part and don't have a problem with most of the design the only thing i'd add would be some additional rules for bosses. At the very least i'd make it so monumental bosses that are by themselves alone have as much hp as the whole party. Though it depends on what type of boss i find it underwhelming if i wanted to say give the party a fight against a dragon only to find out they are technically on part with it hp wise. while the 10 hp enemy may work for more elite like enemies to show they are on pair with the players i think bosses especially when alone should have more than them. In those causes you wanted to show a boss that's not as demanding and maybe is a more commander/ controller type you can set him at 20 instead.

    • @TheDungeonNewbsGuide
      @TheDungeonNewbsGuide  7 місяців тому +1

      Oh, you absolutely can make bosses with 20, 30, 80 HP. I didn't cover the enemy attributes very closely in the video, but you can give a boss more health, more actions in a turn, and special features like invulnerable until a condition is met or damage reduction to certain attacks. The 10HP/4Atk for bosses is just a baseline to work from. I really should have covered those things in a little more depth in the video

    Thanks for the 5e homebrew ideas. I used chatGPT to play with a 5e hybrid of some of this to make more interesting combat. Some of what I got:
    1. Natural Failure (Roll of 1)
    Critical Mishap: Weapon breaks or falls prone.
    Boon Option: Cause an environmental hazard (e.g., knock over a torch to create a small area of fire).
    Major Penalty: Automatically fail your next saving throw or take an attack of opportunity from the enemy.
    2. Just Below AC (Miss by a Narrow Margin)
    Glancing Blow: Deal half damage.
    Boon Option: Push the enemy 5 feet back.
    Penalty: Gain a level of exhaustion (impacting ability checks, attack rolls, etc.).
    Distracting Strike: Next ally's attack against this enemy has advantage.
    Boon Option: Enemy loses their reaction until the start of their next turn.
    Penalty: Your AC is reduced by 2 until your next turn.
    3. On AC or Slightly Above (Meets AC +0 to +2)
    Standard Hit: Deal regular damage.
    Boon Option: Gain +2 to AC until your next turn.
    Penalty: Lose your reaction until the start of your next turn.
    4. Significantly Above AC (Exceeds AC by +3 or More)
    Enhanced Damage: Deal an extra damage die.
    Boon Option: Enemy has disadvantage on their next attack roll.
    Penalty: Your movement speed is halved until your next turn.
    Combat Maneuver: Apply a condition (e.g., prone, disarm).
    Boon Option: Make an immediate bonus action attack.
    Penalty: Disadvantage on attack rolls until the end of your next turn.
    5. Natural Success (Roll of 20)
    Critical Strike: Deal critical damage.
    Boon Option: Stun the enemy until the end of your next turn, or all allies gain advantage on their next attack against the target.
    Minor Penalty: Take 1d4 self-inflicted damage or disadvantage on your next Dexterity saving throw.
