    The rear shock mounts/towers look great. The bracing between towers would just make them that much stronger. Gonna be one stout hauler. Look forward to more. Be safe and stay well.

    Great job. I think the cantilever or bell crank shocks would be cool, but the simple direct approach for a truck makes the most sense. I also think that you don't need to cross-tie the shock towers. Or you can cross the top to the frame on the opposite side to triangulate it.

      Yup, agreed. More moving parts = more stuff that can break.

  • @kramer26

    I would not have mounted the dampers this way, it's a bending load right in the centre of your lateral links, which is not what you want however you look at it or how much you reinforce the bar. A far better method, and one that wouldn't take much, if any, more work, and would be far more trick, would be a push/pull-rod and rocker set up. That way you can factor your 2:1 travel ratio into the rocker, mount the dampers inboard along the frame rails out of the way of everything, at an angle that doesn't impact the damping rate, and could even have utilised the sway bar to pick up from. Added bonus, you can say you have racecar derived suspension on your ramp truck lol

    • @MakeItKustom
      @MakeItKustom  Місяць тому +2

      Yeah, definitely would’ve been cool to do a rocker set up

    Outboard mount them to a cantilevered bar down to the lower link? Would save height.

    Type c for circle. Then type .625/2. Hit enter. Autocad will divide .625 by 2 to get the correct radius. Type Offset. Offset the resulting circle by .020 . Acad also allows several other ways to accomplish this. C,D,.625+.02 (enter)

      the only one

    • @DontCallMeGarage
      @DontCallMeGarage 2 місяці тому +3

      you have to type c for circle, then pick your center point or 3p, 2p etc... then 'cal .625/2 or it wont do the maths... started using autocad in 1991 it was like ver 3.1 or something like that. been using it everyday since... well except for the few years we used cadvance and generic cadd.

      @@basilwatson1 I'm still using Acad 2002 but I'm 71 and retired. It's a little tricky to make it run on Windows 10, but it still does what I need it to do.

    • @looslimb
      @looslimb 2 місяці тому +4

      Curious if you could cantilever the shocks. Mount them between but above the frame rails, but use a 90° link to activate them. The shocks could cross themselves in between the rails and not be s height problem for the bed. You could engineer an accomodation for travel into the transfer bar that could allow the full travel of the suspension but translate into the shocks decreased travel.

  • @crashoveride5641
    @crashoveride5641 2 місяці тому +11

    run the shocks off the bottom bar. reduce the height by half with the same travel. putting the shocks at an angle reduces the effective dampening of the shock.

    • @francisrampen9099
      @francisrampen9099 2 місяці тому +2

      If you think about it angling the shocks doesn't so much reduce the amount of dampening as change the damping rate at the extremes of the shock travel. There were a few motorbikes that used this concept to let you change the damping rate - the Panther springs to mind. It is essentially a rising rate - which is probably what you want.

    • @camsherro3097

      I was going to suggest the same aboutdoing g your shock mounts on the lower arms, might be worth your while taking a look at some trophy truck style four link rear set ups with parallel lowers & triangulated uppers.

    • @camsherro3097
      @camsherro3097 2 місяці тому

      Oh and if you can get your shocks close to 90° to the ground plane of the arm, fully closed at full bump/compression with maybe a 3-5° forward rake to prevent any shock bind it should travel & dampen nicely 😎

    Love the channel, love your work. Something I didn't see mentioned here is that because the vertical movement is half.. but the time per-oscillation is the same - the shock velocity will be half. Because shocks provide resistance proportional to velocity the damping action will also be reduced.

    You could use hydraulic rams, fit an adjustable flow regulator between the two inlets and fill them with oil, the oil will travel from one side to the other but as there is a flow regulator it is restricted so will act as a shock absorber. You could even fit a reservoir which could be gas filled.

But it's odd nobody around me does TIG. I'm not talking a 3 year course but just the basics. I'm recently unemployed so I couldn't go tomorow. If you plan on hauling a car on the ramp truck, you will definitely need some kind of bracing between the shock towers. Because of their height it will give more leverage to the load and try and twist the frame rails. I won't twist much, but enough to cause cracking down the road. Good job though!

    Was thinking, if you mounted the shocks off to the inside, on the lower bar, it wouldn't be so high above the frame, but it's your truck, and it looks cool.
    Instead of a couple of bars across the upper tower, try an X to the top of the tower and the upper frame C channel that will give the back area a lot of strength from twisting.
    Are you going to box the mid area of the C channel behind the motor? Then, it would prevent much twist in the back area.
    The job looks sweet, and I can't wait for more.

    You are making great use of the Fastkut - wish I had one. The shock mounts are super skookum. I also like how you created a separate structure to fit on top of the control arm instead of doing the easy but stupid thing of just welding on a bracket. The control arms should operated in either pure tension or compression and your design doesn't introduce bending moments. Nicely done.

      @@MakeItKustom Thank your Karl! This is a great project and I appreciate your bravery in sharing on UA-cam- the armchair critics love to gather and criticize especially anything requiring welding. I think that negative criticism is only valid if you see something that is obviously dangerous. The reality is anyone who has made anything will under think some aspect of the design or come up with a better solution after the fact and that is a necessary part of your journey. If you ever get a chance to visit the Ferrari museum in Modena do so - you will see even at Ferrari a load of poor design albeit with excellent craftsmanship.

    Just a thought. Instead of bars across the top shock mounts, could you incorporate the ramp itself into bolting to the shock mounts? Use the deck as a cross member effectively.

    Well big brother....as I sit here I have a smile on my face. If i could talk to you as you proceed through this process on Auto Cad..... I realize that time is of the accent and you may not have time to explain what your doing intelligently but I have used auto cad for a while and I'm doing it in Auto cad in three D.... With the shock for clearances.....

    Have you thought about making steel line for the air bags and using the fuel line install kits the switch from steel to neoprene at or near the bags? The fuel line repair kits should work for that I would think? It would make the system much more robust would it not? Seems like you are building everything else out to be as reliable as possible

      That’s a really great idea also! The stuff that I’m using is for air brake line so I trust it and it’s easy to fix on the fly
