  • Today we take a look at one of the most underrated guns for concealed carry, the Beretta PX4 Storm. While this gun has seen some success it hasn't gained nearly the notoriety that it deserves. We break down why and why you want to shoot one.

    I EDC a PX4 Compact Carry. When I first discovered this gun a couple years ago it was like I had uncovered a buried treasure. Many think DA/SA is odd or inconsistent but the fact is I'm eerily accurate with the first DA shot, and then the trigger on the SA follow-up shots is unbelievably crisp. I finally sent mine to LTT just a few weeks ago to get an optics cut, can't wait to get it back, the PX4cc is the "perfect" carry gun IMHO.

      @@coreygraham860 , The PX4cc is concealable but it's not the trimmest or lightest. It feels a little bulky but conceals just fine with a good holster, positioned well, and angled properly.

      I've had mine for 14 years now. Last year it was jamming on me quite often. RSO at the range said the recoil rod was most likely going bad. Instead of replacing with an oem spring I went for the DPM Systems recoil reduction spring. It made an already flat shooting gun even flatter with less recoil and now no more jamming.

    Absolutely... CRIMINALLY underrated! The PX4 Compact is the compact that shoots like a full-size. A simple, five-minute hammer spring swap is all it takes to really give you a much lighter DA first shot that is a joy to shoot and train with. The SA shot is reduced as well, but it's not nearly as noticeable.
    By the way, you mentioned 100,000-round reliability - that's no exaggeration. Ernest Langdon did a 50,000 endurance review of his PX4 and found that the PX4 was still going strong... good stuff! :) A modified PX4 Inox Compact is my EDC and nothing will be taking its place - LOVE IT!

      Which hammer and spring upgrade for a lighter double action pull do you recommend?

    • @tobylmiller
      @tobylmiller Рік тому +3

      @@markywestside ...By far the biggest “bang for the buck,” changing out your hammer spring can make a significant impact on the PX4, and it’s very easy for anyone to do.
      • Swapping to Beretta’s D-Spring drops the DA/SA pull weights from 10/5 to approx. 8/4.5... a bit smoother trigger action as well! I loved the D-spring, but curiosity got the best of me. So, I opted to switch to the Langdon Tactical Technology (LTT) chrome-silicone hammer spring.
      • I chose the LTT #11. It dropped the (DA/SA) trigger pulls to approx. 5.3 - 6 lbs. (DA) / 3.5 - 4 lbs. (SA), and I’m not going back …LOVE IT!  :)

      I have a question since you have both. I passed on the full sized and got the 92X. I love the 92X. Question is, will the compact carry fit correctly in the full sized holster? The holster maker says no. I feel the longer holster should make it more comfortable and conceal better. Thanks

I've been dry firing with MantisX and laser cartridge. Have to put it through a true test soon. I really like the upgrades on this model (IMO it is worth the extra $ and not have to worry about spending more time and money on parts later). I’ve shot this again this year (last time was around my mid 20s and 34 y/o now). All I can say is that I should’ve held it better back then. Now I’m VERY ACCURATE with this. Only thing I still don’t like about this is the long DA trigger pull and the wide grip, taking me extra time to fix my grip (at least my hands are big to the point it really isn’t difficult to grasp). I love the look of this and this is why I chose to rent it in my mid 20s.

    A correction...Beretta has not created firearms for 500 years. They were a foundry with their own mine. They created cannon barrels. Their corporate logo shows 3 arrows superimposed on circles which represent cannon balls. The first arrow ( on left) is to show a warning shot across the bow of a ship.. the one to the right is a warning shot ocross the rudder, or the stern. The middle arrow is dead center, or center mast. It shows the arrows fletch in the center of the cannonball, the other arrows fletch is outside the cannon ball. So 2 warnings then strike the center. Their headquarter in Italy has a monument with that saying in Latin . Fanboy for sure.

While I’ve picked up other handguns since then some costing twice as much in the Sig Sauer MK25 and a p365 XL with a Holosun red dot along with some grip modifications I still will conceal carry my PX4 quite a bit. People kept outbidding me for Inox examples and I'm not paying $1,000+ for a PX4, so I'm probably going to get the slide refinished in CPII.
    Asked Beretta if they were ever going to produce more Inox examples, and the rep didn't know, but she did say that Beretta has not manufactured any PX4s, in any variety for all of 2023. Not a good sign.

    I've got a FS modded to a Carry, a Compact Carry and a Subcompact that has been to LTT. So, I guess a SubCompact Carry. These are good guns. I carry the Sub the most due to its size. If hindsight 20/20, to be perfeclly honest, you can carry a FS concealed as easy as a compact in this pistol. It'll come to your preference, IMHO. If you can get past the "the looks only a mother can love" part, this is an awesome pistol. I personally, love the look.

      I bought a PX4 Compact Carry (which has some upgrades to the Compact but has not had the action polished and lightened like your LTT). It was a great gun and I shot well with it, but it was just so big and clunky it seemed huge compared to the strikers in my carry rotation. I like DA/SA pistols, so I replaced the PX4 it with the H&K P30SK, which I did buy from LTT which polished the trigger and lightened the pull. Langon also added a Grayguns flat trigger, which I am not sure I would do again. It makes the SA pull break more like my flat-trigger Sigs, but the long DA pull with that flat trigger is odd.

    I love how it shoots and feels in the hand. It did not come with extra backstraps, but the medium on it fits my very medium hands well. I also have the M9 Commercial. Funny thing is that I also like the feel of that gun. It reminds me of my full size .44 Mag revolver. I guess I just like the Berettas. Would love to get a Cx4 Storm. With just the change of the magwell insert and mag release ($65 total) I can use with both my pistols. Will probably get a Px4 Compact as well.

      I would rather Beretta change to a more aggressive slide serration pattern and make sight changes easier. Optics might make it better for some, but for my needs a decent set of high-visibility sights is going to be easier for me to use every time. Beretta did offer a drop-in metal replacement trigger for a while but I noticed many negative comments about the trigger fracturing, probably due to poor heat treatment by the supplier. I'm personally fine with a polymer-overmolded trigger, but I wish they would redesign it to take the flex out of it. And since I like to practice shooting DA with mine, I'll take a smooth trigger face every time.

    I'd be willing to bet the slide mass is a bigger factor in controlling muzzle rise and dampening recoil impulse than the rotating barrel is: There's just not that much barrel mass by comparison and it rotates through a pretty short arc. However, over the 12 years of owning one or more Px4s, I have temporarily switched to other pistols, usually smaller and lighter, only to drift back to one of the Px4s. It actually carries well for a pistol its size and it is a lot more manageable in rapid drawing and shooting than anything smaller I have tried. The only real negatives I have against the Px4 design is the use of roll pins in the slide assembly and the difficulty in swapping sights -- but I also realize that to design the pins out would have resulted in a more expensive pistol, and there are other pistols out there with equally difficult-to-swap sights (I wouldn't worry about it except the current front sight is too tall relative to the rear and leads to lower hits than a POA sight picture would have one expect.

      If you compare the barrel on the 9mm version to other brand barrels of similar length you will find the PX4 barrel MUCH thicker and has added mass thanks to the structure for the rotating lug mechanism. They did that because the gun was also offered in .40 and .45 when it was first released. So while the barrel does have a lot of mass and does help with recoil impulse, the chonky slide is doing most of that job. Fun fact: the rotation angle is the same as an AK pattern rotating bolt

    I have the full size with a green dot milled and it is accurate and precise af, I just wish there was more of desire for after market support because getting a dot for it was kind of a pain but after the dot, and some talon grip tape, I can’t imagine another 9mm.

    Many of us have known what a gem the PX4 is for years, great to see it finally getting the attention it deserves. And those sexy Italian lines make it look so much nicer than a chunky Glock.

    I miss my px4 compact carry. Had it less than a month and discovered a burr inside the slide that was carving up the barrel as the action rotated. Sent it in for warranty repair, beretta has had it for 2 months now and have yet to even look at it. I’ve looked into it since then and found a Reddit thread with people claiming waiting as long as 9 month for their pistol to be returned. Super disappointed in this as last year I sent a kimber on for repair, and they had it back to me in 10 days. Nothing I can do now but wait. The best part is, they don’t notify you when they send it back, so per beretta customer service I have to check their website or call regularly to find out where the gun is at as far as repairs and or being shipped back to me goes.

    The only real downside of this rotating barrel design, means they're impossible to suppress. ...Which is probably why the military rejected it IMO.

    Grand Power actually pioneered the rotating barrel system and is still produced today.

    • @phishno2767
      @phishno2767 Рік тому +2

      Not even close. Steyr had pistols with rotating locking systems in the early 1900s and John Browning patented a rotating barrel system in 1897. The Beretta Cougar was on the market by 1994 (I saw them in gun shops then) and had been under development years before. Grand Power has a design that differs in the detail of implementation but not in concept and lagged Beretta into production by over 10 years.

    I've owned a Beretta PX4 Storm compact for about 4 years. I don't notice any difference in recoil between this gun and any of my other compact pistols. They claim the rotating barrel reduces recoil, but I don't notice any difference.

    I just can't do a hammer on conceal carry. Too many situations where that hammer hurts your self defense. Snagging on clothes, allowing someone to easily block hammer discharge up close, etc.
    Beretta makes great guns but they just don't seem to be catching on to what people want like springfield is.
    If beretta made this an internal hammer like the FN Reflex, I would however give it some consideration.

Simple easy drop in upgrades with no gunsmith work needed. I just don't see the motivation to move over to a hammer fired Beretta. What is there to gain that I don't have now?

    If you rack the slide and load a bullet the first shot will be single action, right? Double action only takes effect if the hammer is down. But after racking and chambering a round, the hammer will be cocked. Cocked hammer is single action
