5 REASONS WE FLAT TOW A JEEP WRANGLER

- For as long as Sabrina and I have been RVing we have flat towed a vehicle behind our RV. For the first 6 years that vehicle has been a Ford Cmax, but now we flat tow a 2001 Jeep Wrangler and in this video I am going to share 5 reasons of why we now tow a Wrangler
First it is a great go anywhere vehicle, so when we park our RV we can hop in the jeep and explore an area, even if that means it is off the beaten path. I really enjoy exploring offroad trails and even just simple dirt paths And its small size makes finding parking spaces or exploring a crowded city a breeze.
Speaking of it’s small size that brings us to reason number 2 it’s small size and how light weight it is makes it a breeze to tow, our RV doesn’t even know it’s back there. At 3300 lbs we are well under our RV’s tow capacity and it’s short wheelbase and overall short length makes it easy for us to fit into spaces for overnight stays like gas stations and casinos.
Number three it is very easy to connect to the RV, because it is an older Jeep, there are no fancy computer menus to go through, just turn the key to accessory, put the transfer case in neutral and the transmission in any gear, I prefer second, but it really doesn’t matter and it is ready to be flat towed. Now just hook it up to your RV like you would any other flat towable vehicle.
Number 4 it is a great all year-round type of vehicle, in the spring and summer, we can take the top off and use it as a convertible enjoy the season with its open top feel and in the winter it’s ready for any type of bad weather, the Jeep has no problem getting us out and about even in the snow to grab groceries or supplies.
Reason number 5 is probably the most selfish reason, but I have always wanted to own a Jeep Wrangler from the time I was a teenager and able to drive, I have always thought of them as cool vehicles and a few of my friends have owned them through the years and I always enjoyed driving them when they would let me borrow theirs and now with our home base being in Arizona surrounded by mountains I thought this was the perfect time to make a purchase on a Jeep. It has been just under a year of ownership, but I can say it has lived up to all of my expectations.
We have two TOAD vehicles, my wife's 2017 Jeep Cherokee Overland edition, as well as a 2007 Toyota Yaris that was already set up to tow that we bought 2 years ago. The thing I like about the Yaris is it is small and light at 2,300 pounds (the Cherokee is 4,300 pounds), as well as short at 150 inches it is 2 inches shorter than your Wrangler. All combined this makes the Yaris MUCH easier to tow, it is so light I have to keep the rear view camera on to know its back there. The other two big things I like about it is that it was cheap, I paid $2,500 for it so I worry less about it getting covered in grime, and beat up while towing, also the fact that it gets 40 mpg highway is nice when out exploring at our destination. As to it being a small cheap car, one answer sums up most thoughts I have on the Yaris when it comes to comfort, performance, etc. it is not as bad as I thought it would be, and in its way is a fun little car to drive. I will even often use to to run to the store, around town, etc. instead of my Dodge Challenger SRT-8
Ike, that sounds great! Honestly I didn't know the Yaris was flat towable, but it sounds perfect. The weight of it is perfect and with over 40mpg it will actually offset the MPG's of the RV.
Shoot, I am still looking. Such a hard time to find a good one at a reasonable price. I do love my Mini Convertible, it's too low to the ground and rough to go down dirt roads. However, I have towed it around the country without trouble.
Try Autonation you might have to go pick it up or ship to door. I was shocked to actually find some at better price points for post pandemic.
Doug, it took me a long time to find a Jeep as well. There are a lot of them out there and unfortunately probably more bad ones than good ones, especially for the older models. You'll find one!
We just traded our truck/5er for a Class A DP. Our 1st trip is next month, but decided on not getting a toad until I’ve had some time behind the wheel (thinking next year). We have e-bikes and if I need a car I will just rent one for our first summer trip. The Jeep is certainly on our list to purchase as a toad. Great vids and tips.
This vehicle sounds like the perfect vehicle to drag behind! We get it!
It has worked out so well! I can't imagine ever wanting to tow anything else
Have had our JK for 13 years, towed it with 3 different rvs and have loved it from day 1.
I've got a 98 jeep wrangler that I got in 2003 so it is now 20 years old and I have 222,000 miles on it. We flat toe it behind our motorhome when we go on our vacations. The motor has never been touched so far. I had a 71 jeep YJ before the TJ but only had it a few years. I worked in an automotive factory here where we live that made the dash and component's that went on it and thats how I got interested in having one. I have done a lot of different upgrades to it as I took it offroad for several years when we lived in Colorado and now back in Illinois. I don't do that anymore as I got tired of cleaning off all the mud. I don't ever plan on getting rid of it just keep driving it and if I need to put a crate engine in it if it fails at some point.
We have a 2006 42' Monaco Dynasty Class A diesel pusher. We flat tow a 2018 Lincoln MKX. My wife is handicapped so it was all about finding a car she could get in and out of easily and be comfortable riding in.
That subscriber bump is nice. 😂😂😂
Lol that's mostly from one short we did on the Winnebago 36B it had 260,000 views and gained over 900 subscribers from it. It's the short where we ask if this is the biggest bed in a van, it kind of just exploded
Have a 12 JKU that we pull behind our Winnebago. Wouldn't pull anything else. Have always wanted an older TJ like a 97 to have as a beater.
One of the big reasons for purchasing the TJ was knowing I would take it off road and I didn't want to be the first one to put a dent in it lol. It's great not having to worry about it getting scratched or dinged. Of course I'm not trying to go out of my way to scratch it, but if it happens it's OK
Best part if the RV breaks down during a trip you can use a rooftop tent to go camping somewhere else.
I am planning on doing some camping g in the Jeep this winter, Sabrina on the other hand says that is an absolute no! 🤣
Less bugs and critter's. That's like offering her everything she dislikes about camping in nature. 😂😂
I have a 2012 Jeep JK. My only complaint is it is loud. Mind you I've owned it new. We purchased it November of 2011.
I don't think I have ever been in a Jeep wrangler that was quiet, even the new ones are still loud inside once you get in the highway
I would like a highland Green mustang convertible with a 2 inch lift and rollbar. 😂😂😂
We are looking at a 1999 Sahara TJ automatic transmission to flat tow. Can the automatic tranny be used or does it need to be a manual. Also, we sold our home in AZ, but now we just realized we have to have a home base. Did you find a place out a ways? We’re tired of the city. Thanks!
Hi Kurt, yes you can flat tow the automatic transmission TJs. We have a home base in Sierra Vista AZ, we think it's a pretty quiet town, but still has plenty to do, it's a big difference from growing up in Philadelphia
what about brakes ?
We use the RVI Brake 3 portable auxiliary brake system. It's the same brake system that was used in our Cmax since 2017 and since the brake is portable, we can move it back and forth to each vehicle, in case there are times that we want to tow the Cmax instead of the Jeep.
