I remember going to Ogden for this occasion back in 2019. My grandfather and I had been planning on that trip for almost 2 years, and it paid off, as we got to see it running!
Whole family was in Ogden from Van Alstyne Texas. Was the best experience we ever had. Watching the 4014 turn the corner in Echo Canyon was unbelievable. From the land of dreams came the most awesome show of steam and power. Thank you UP...!
My great grandfather worked as a welder for the Union Pacific Railroad around the turn of the 19h century, No regrets, no complaints. and I can't say a bad thing about it. I still have his Union Pacific cuff links from the 1920's and proud to have them.
I was there on that day and remember the speech it was the greatist day and moment of my life I swear I had a tear come out of my eye. Thank you Uionion Pacifics and Ed Dickens for making the impossible reality for restoring UP 4014 big boy and thank you UP for making the transcontenental railroad 150 years ago.
This Big Boy is #DONE! Celebrating dreams and a railroad that made them come true! Glad I was a part of celebrating with you my friend Ed Dickens along with your celebrated Steamcrew you assembled to get 'er done to make this day possible for all our UnionnPacific family and the world! You've inspired a few of my big dreams that keep coming true, I hope you know my friend! I owe agreat deal to you for that! Thank you Sir and the Union Pacific BUILDING AMERICA!!! God Bless you and the USA!!!

You of Union Pacific Railroad are amazing, 844 is my colleague too and she didn't introduce me to 4014 just to 3985. For those who don't know me: I'm Southern Pacific 4449, and I'm a streamline steam locomotive of Southern Pacific Railroad.
Thank you Union Pacific and the steam crews for bringing this amazing piece of machinery back to life!! You've brought wonder and awe back to railfans around the world!
Thank you Union Pacific! Great work on 4014! Once again that whistle and steam exhaust can be heard on the Overland route. You have a cause to be proud!
Union Pacific is a name heard by many people and presented well, respected. It’s locos are beautiful giant beasts pulling long freight trains and heavy excursion trains. Lovely locos going to, the challengers, big boys, DDA40X’s, SD70 ACEs. Beautiful trains. Trains are amazing.
Thank you so much for reminding us of the yeoman service and contribution of the Chinese Construction Workers in this monumental project of joining the East Coast to the West Coast by Railroad... 🙏⚘️🙏
Congratulations to Union Pacific for remembering and respecting their heritage. I had seen all other surviving Big Boys on various holidays in the USA. When I found out that 4014 was being restored to operations for the 150th Aniversary of the Golden Spike I just had to be there. I flew in all the way from Scotland and had a great time in Ogden on Friday and Saturday. Another "Bucket List" completed. Thanks to UP and the City of Ogden.
Congraudlations UP! Is it weird that I want to see these bad boys running revenue trains. I would definitely pay to be a passenger for nostalgia points alone.
Here's a story from world war II from a German p o w and this German pow saw one of these Mammoth looking locomotives possibly the big boy in Utah they were on our way to a US prisoner of war camp and he said to his fellow German pow next to him saying "we have no way of winning this war" as he was pointing to one of these mammoth locomotives. Now this story could be muddy down because word of mouth it just goes to show you the ingenuity of human thought of progress big boy truly is one of the most advanced steam engines out there probably more advanced than 844
There was a German official, though I've forgotten which, upon hearing that we were able to build a Liberty ship every 24 hours, said the same thing. Good grief, the Ford plant at Willow Run was making a bomber an hour. That's impressive enough, but then think about the sheer logistics of it. It's really stunning.
Jeremy Johnson and here is another one. And this is one is very true. This occurred right after Operation Boldenplatte, the last German aerial operation of WWII. After a German pilot was captured by the Americans and turned over to the airbase commanding officer, the man pointed to the destruction around the base and proudly said, “look at what we did!” In English. The commander just smiled and put him in lock-up for days. On the fourth day, in the early wee hours of morning, four MP’s suddenly burst in, put him in blindfold, and manhandled him into a Jeep. The German thought he was going to die. The Jeep drove a bit, then stopped. As the German started to fully prepare himself, a hand reached over, and pulled his blindfold off. His eyes couldn’t adjust to the sunlight so another hand turned his head to a certain direction. When his eyes finally cleared, he had to look around to make sure he wasn’t dreaming. He wasn’t because the previous four days of destruction still hasn’t been fully cleared yet but on the airfield, were rows after rows of gleaming brand new P-51 and P-47! A face looked at him. The shell shocked German realized its the smiling face of the base commander. He looked at him and said fluent German, “look at what WE did!!!” At that moment, the German recalled years later, was when he completely broke down and just started bawling in the Jeep. He realized then and there Germany lost the war and there was no way anyone can beat the Americans cause there are no country in the world that can take such a huge hit in the chin, act like nothing had happened, and just ask his opponent, is that all you got? And promptly go in and beat him down!
Dead Freight West just how frightening the “Arsenal of Democracy” is? You can put all the other major combatants of the war, Germans, Italy, Japan, USSR, and British and what they produced from 1937-1945 together, and we still beat them by a hair with what we produced from 1942-1945! That is insane!
I read in a book (forgot that book), in 1942 when the first American pilots were shot down in North Africa, a Luftwaffe commander saw one of those pilots, and looking at the fresh flight suit, fresh accessories and pistol as well as rations and then he knew, Germany will lose the war, as he knew the big, modern American factories have now shifted to full wartime production, and those well-equipped American soldiers will be gunning for them.
I'm crying cause I missed this on a Friday on a school day I missed it by ten hours I thought I was gonna see it I couldn't stop crying after that 😭😭😭😭😭
You're right. Just need a little education... 844. 110 MPH rulz. "I feel the need for speed..." I luv 4014 as much as anybody...but 844 got it goin' on also...that's why UP did both...All the best to you.
