Commenting for the algorithm, enjoyed a few of your vids/guides over the last few days, and you and the game need more attention. I'm currently preparing for my first trip out across the ocean once I've put a tall mast and bigger lateen to go with my new jib on the dhow. I'm determined to go with the dhow there and back at least once before getting a new boat. Thanks for the content!
@@DaltonReutlinger Hey can I ask, I don't see a mod list in your descriptions, if you use certain ones or any, or if I'm seeing late-game content not sure sometimes. I see there's some on the discord like the sea life mod and the expanded shipyards, might play around tonight with them but it seems a pain to install them and I'm curious if you recommend any?
@@DaltonReutlinger yeah I tried, but getting this bepinex nonsense installed and configured on a steam deck is an absolute nightmare and not really worth it it seems. It'd be cool to play with whales, and I wanted extra telltales from another mod I saw, but not much on offer really. This game certainly has such awesome potential though.
Great beginner's guide! A few starter tips of my own to add onto it: - When facing the wind, you can reverse the dhow or any boat with junk or gaff sails by letting the sail out completely and pushing the sail's yardarm out by clicking on it. Turn and lock the helm and Hold the sail out to make the wind push you backwards till the ship turns out of the wind, straighten her out and pull the sail tight again. - It's safer and quicker to let your sail's winch out completely before you furl it up. This reduces the strain on the sail so it rolls up quicker, and it can't tip you over or push you into the dock when you open it up again. This is a lifesaver in storms. - You need 300 reputation to open the trade book, use the cart, sail long distance missions or take on more than 2 missions at a time. For your first trip, it's almost always best to find two missions heading to the same destination with as many items as possible. The amount of reputation you get per mission is equal to the number of items x the distance in miles. So if you pick up missions with enough boxes each, you can get to 300 reputation after one trip. Food and tobacco missions are light and often provide many boxes. - Buy some snacks at the starting island as emergency rations, and keep your starting box of food unopened to sell at the capital city for more starting funds. You can just sell it to a vendor there if you can't open the trade book yet. Street food is cheaper than boxes of food, and raw fish is almost free to catch. Eat fruit whenever you see it to prevent scurvy. If you sell your map, table and mug, you should be able to buy a box of dates to trade in the capital, even after buying the fishing rod and hooks. Dates are light, come in small boxes and give you a high return on investment. Drinking alcohol lets you sleep and timeskip for longer, so you get to your destination faster in real time and get rich quicker. - Al Ankh is a great place to start not just because of the boat and sailing conditions, but also because of all the early trading opportunities. Almost every island produces something you can sell for up to 100% profit somewhere nearby. Buy and sell dates to make money fast. Oasis is close enough for beginners to reach and just far enough to make big profits. - The Emerald Archipelago has a more complicated economy to figure out, but enough different high value trade goods that you can earn enough to buy the junk fairly quickly. Firefish Lagoon is nearby, downwind and very profitable. The storms are a pain but perfectly survivable with a kakam full of tea or seafood. - Aestrin's trade patterns are almost as unpredictable as its winds, at least until you've scraped together enough cash to trade metals. You just have to cruise up and down the island chain and take whatever cargo you can get. The nearest long distance destination is way over at Happy Bay, and it's tricky to find and sail the square rigged cog to through the huge waves and crosswinds. And that's still much faster and more fun than grinding short local runs to buy the brig.
Regarding weight, I usually try to keep the center of mass as low as possible. Balance the weight roughly evenly across the hull of the ship, if you can. It's generally a bad idea to store cargo in a way it sits above the hull of your ship. That's likely to make your ship top heavy and cause it to be eager to tip and stay tipped, which will likely lead to sinking.
@@Zeldon567 for the boat in this video, you can very comfortably carry two crates stacked on top of one another. Maybe even three depending on the cargo. Beyond that, you’re pushing your luck, especially if you get into rough seas, or a storm.
@@DaltonReutlinger I did say it's *generally* a bad idea lol. As a rule of thumb, a high center of gravity is something to be avoided. I generally stack medium size boxes two high on the dhow, or store them vertically.
around each island (except Oasis) is a "plane of stillness" where there are no big ocean waves. where it meets with the open ocean is where you get the jankiness
You probably already know this, but just a tip: apparently weapon words in a video can limit its exposure rate on YT. Great overview, really enjoyed it. Thanks. :)
Really wish the dev could find a better way to handle the transition from open ocean to “coastal” waters than the current hard line, one that was more naturally tied to wind direction, topography, etc.
So sorry, but despite only being 30 you might be old by nature. Hard to argue with "loves the water" and "is considering magnet fishing". But unlike being actual old you still have a decade or two before you have to pay attention to the check engine lights -- for now should be enough to just let the doctors track them.

Enjoy! Your first ocean crossing in a small boat gives you a sense of accomplishment like no other game. Bring snake oil.

@ the mods won’t come into play until next Monday. So far, I’ve noticed a fair few don’t work, though.

This game got me so addicted to sailing to the point that I bought a kayak and installed a sail for it 😅 1:08:34 i recommend falcon sail for you
what kind of kayak? I have one and I've wanted a sail on it for so long. I think I can bubba a sail on it but I don't know what I'd do for a keel
@@timallenfanclubofficial I have a canoe or sit in kayak. I’ve thought about using PCP pipe for the mast and boom, or maybe bamboo.
