    Hot take: Hazy Maze Cave is my favourite course. The atmosphere, like, you are in an abandoned mine setting, the rusty elevator, the dim lighting, the Dorrie section, basically all 6 stars, the moss and the lichen growing on the ground and contrasting with the generally dark assets, the section where you hang on the metal ceiling to get the star above the void and you are bathing in sweat, even traversing the hazy maze (you can't forget the amazing metal cap course too) make it the best not only aesthetically, but also gameplay-wise stage for me. It feels tons of fun to explore and I never dread playing this stage even if I get lost, but the navigation is generally very entertaining for me. It has a lot of coins, too, so the 100 coin star is easy. It was the first course I finished all 7 stars because I loved it so much. Such an amazing stage, but I kinda get why people dislike it most of the time.
    The rest of the tier list is OK, but I had a blast watching this video!

    Tall Tall Mountain was always one of my faves for some reason. Like, I can totally see why its put at such a low tier for game design flaws and repetition, but I always really liked exploring that stage for some reason.

    Here's my hot take, Dire Dire Docks is one of the best levels. Its one of the most pleasant and relaxing stages in the whole game, not to mention it's euphoric, soothing music. I also love how half of the stage feels organic, like a natural ocean bay, while the other half feels more industrial and man-made. Its a nice contrast and makes the level stand out environment-wise. I also love the tunnel that connects it to the outside of Peach's Castle. It's little touches like this that I appreciate. Also the mission involving the two caps is really cool, because you're using both power up at the same time. I could go on, but for me, Dire Dire Docks is one of the most pleasant and immersive levels in the entire game.

      Yeah, I don't hate Dire Dire Docks either! It feels peaceful and I don't mind the slow pace, as I don't care about completing things fast. I like what you said, though I hate getting trapped in that one hole that leads back to the castle xD It's like B tier to me! Think my favorite is the pole jumping to be honest for that stage xD I'm glad I'm not alone in liking this stage!

    I feel like if they ranked the SM64 DS stages, stages like Tick Tock Clock, Tall Tall Mountain and Hazey Maze Cave would be higher from some improvements(A bottom screan map, Hoot the Owl for Tall Tall Mountain , and a larger ground Area for Tick Tock Clock.

    Rainbow Ride is actually one of my favorite stages in Super Mario 64! I like using the carpets to transverse the level, and I don't mind that it is slow pace. I also like it that it is very difficult, but you feel a sense of accomplishment when you complete the different stars! The least one I like is the red coin one, but I like the other ones more because you explore and use the carpets to get around! *is dead serious*

  • @uberlord983
    @uberlord983 5 років тому +20

    Personally, I think you could petition Jolly Roger Bay for at least A-tier. Sure, I'm not the biggest fan of water-themed worlds, but it feels like the most open stage. As in, you can do any star, any time, & it doesn't feel like you're doing them in a linear order.

    Lethal lava land is just asset hell. It's where all the unused objects went to die. You know that that Bowser puzzle was meant to go in Bowser 2.

  • @TJ-Henry-Yoshi

    Personal Changes
    Cool Cool Mountain: A -> C
    Hazy Maze Cave: D -> B
    Tick Tock Clock: B -> D
    Bowser in the Fire Sea: B -> A+
    Lethal Lava Land: C -> A
    Vanish Cap: D -> C+
    Snowman's Land: C -> B
    CCM
    It's a pretty basic snow level that relies a bit too heavily on its warp point and slide. It's pretty easy to experience all there is to see here and its stars are shrug-worthy. It's decent, but without items or open-ended scaling to play with, it's as forgettable as its name (which often gets confused with the other and more fun snow level)
    HMC
    It was always such a mystical level for me to explore and I vividly remember the fourth star giving me excessive difficulty despite the high amount of time I spent there. Everything from the main Rolling Rocks room, to the mystical reservoir where you encounter Dorie for the first time. The level is by far the heaviest use of the metal cap in the game and the stars based around it showcase its unique capabilities really well.
    TTC
    This level definitely has one of the coolest concepts of all time, but its execution is poor, to say the least. The entire level is an endless climb that leaves you falling to your doom again and again. There's not really any space to run around and explore and while arguably a great challenge, a fair amount of this challenge is artificial, brought on by invisible walls and the worst default camera settings the game has to offer.
    BitFS
    This is by far my favorite Bowser level to run through. There are several clear, simple, and yet satisfying spots that tease the player with routes and strategies that could showcase true skill while also giving a new player "monkey bars" for a less confident playthrough. An expert player, however, can long jump off the very first moving platform, bouncing off the floating and sinking blocks with masterful positioning. There he is met a slow elevator with walls BEGGING to be used to skip past. Both the entry-level and expert level players are given a unique way to play, and it provides the most satisfying linear movement in the entire game
    LLL
    Two words: Lava Surfing.
    Vanish Cap
    While doing a poor job of demonstrating the cap's capability's, the level is genuinely a fun challenge, testing the player's attentiveness, keeping track of not only Mario's positioning but the positioning of the objects and obstacles beneath his feet. This level also has the location for my own personal favorite triple jump in the game. Overall a solid and reasonably fun platforming challenge.
    SML
    More stuff to play with than in CCM. There's a boss, a shell, an invis cap, and especially noticeable landmark resting at the center of this very open level. The igloo was also a really unique and hidden away little secret.
    Welp, there goes an hour of my time. THIS IS WHY I HATE TIER LISTS. I ALWAYS HAVE TOO MUCH TO SAY!

  • @InfernoFlower64
    @InfernoFlower64 4 роки тому +6

    I've always thought that Lethal Lava Land looked very unfinished. It's literally a small floating plane of lava in the middle of nowhere. There's no extra atmosphere, it doesn't resemble anything like an actual place, unlike every other level in the game (except maybe Rainbow Ride, but even that has some semblance of a real place).

    Personal, my least favorite course is the wing cap level, because it an awful tutorial level. In order to gave even a slim chance of getting the star, you have to be good with it. the problem is that (like you said in the video), you can only get the coins up high on the way down. So you could practice for hours on the tiny island in the middle, and you would think you doing something wrong because you get up to only the first 4 coins, at best.

    Here's my ranking!
    Honestly, all the big stages (the ones with 7 stars) are memorable to me in different ways, and I could understand any of them being someone's favorite.
    24. Wing Mario Over the Rainbow - To be fair, I haven't attempted this one much yet. It could ascend in the future, but probably only above the aquarium star. Flying is fun, but it does suck to have to climb all the way back up to the 3rd floor after you die. Haven't played it much at all, so this section is short.
    23. The Secret Aquarium - I like how this star is hidden, and I like the aquarium idea. But I agree with this video, there should've been more life in the aquarium, maybe coral, clams, Shushi, the Cheep Cheep fish whatever they're called, and so on. This star is quick and easy. If it wasn't hidden, I would put this last, but since it is, I like it a bit more than Wing Mario Over the Rainbow. And of course, the Dire Dire Docks song is good.
    22. The Princess's Secret Slide - A hidden stage, and short but sweet. A good introduction to a slide stage, complete with that great Slider theme. Then there's a 2nd star there that challenges you to beat it in under 21 seconds! It's just...short.
    21. Tower of the Wing Cap - Looking up into the light is cool, and so is the setting of the stage. Missing Red Coins is annoying, but the fact that you don't lose a life if you fall makes up for it. The Red Coins aren't the most fun to get admittedly, so it's just okay. But it is a good introduction to the Wing Cap.
    20. Cavern of the Metal Cap - Finding this stage inside of Hazy Maze Cave is cool. The introduction to the Metal Cap is also spot-on, showing you can walk in water and resist currents and that you're practically invincible. Collecting the Red Coins is fun too. It is really annoying to fall out of the stage from the water flow, but if you're paying attention, this won't happen.
    19. Vanish Cap Under the Moat - Accessing this by draining the water and finding some hole in the ground outside is pretty cool. The stage is also the largest and my favorite of the Cap stages. The platforming in this one is fun to me, as are the Red Coins.
    18. Dire, Dire Docks - I don't hate Mario water levels. In fact, I quite enjoy the slower and more relaxing playstyle of them. And I don't hate Dire, Dire Docks either, but something had to get last, unfortunately. I like the concept, and the first part feels alive with the different aquatic creatures around the area. The star where you need both the Vanish and Metal Caps is cool too. The music, shared with Jolly Roger Bay, may very well be my favorite in the game. It's so calming in a unique, "Mario 64-esque" way. I don't like the Red Coins all that much, though, but everything else is fine. I just prefer the other levels.
    17. Rainbow Ride - The Bandy's Big House star is quite boring half the time, and getting burned by the furnace is the worst feeling, but otherwise I quite enjoy the different platforming aspects and the rainbow theme. And then there's the Slider theme, which always adds that action-based flare to a level. Haven't attempted the 100 Coins yet, but I don't think it'll make me hate it so much that Rainbow Ride drops below Dire, Dire Docks. I do agree with the "Nintendo could've done more with this stage" argument, but that doesn't make me dislike this stage.
    16. Tick Tock Clock - I'm going to confess that this stage is low simply because I haven't played it too much, and I haven't attempted 100 Coins. The raw platforming and time mechanics are really cool, but that doesn't make it any less rage-inducing. As I play it more, I expect to come to appreciate it more and it could very well move up some spots, but it's against some stiff competition.
    15. Bowser in the Dark World - Even now I need to be careful when playing this stage, as one wrong move and you're toast! This is a fun platforming stage that isn't very long, but not too short. The "dark world" feel is cool, and the epic music (also in the other Bowser stages) adds to that as well. Getting the Red Coins is a good challenge too. Bowser is easy, but the hardest boss at this point, and fun to fight as well. Something about swinging him around by the tail is funny but also epic at the same time! And the Bowser battle theme slaps too.
    14. Bowser in the Fire Sea - This stage is cool, you're jumping across lots of different platforms, collecting Red Coins, and trying to not fall in the lava. It is a very fiery stage with a fiery battle! Bowser throws more tricks at you this time, including teleporting, charging you, and even tipping the whole platform! It's one heck of a stage!
    13. Bowser in the Sky - I raged a lot playing this, but it's fun and challenging, especially the Red Coins. It throws lots of different platforms and obstacles at you to put you to the test, leading up to the final battle! And the sky is menacing. The final Bowser battle is tough and fun. It takes 3 hits to win and he throws all sorts of attacks at you. In fact, I can't discern a clear pattern to his attacks, he just kinda does what he wants. The music is different than the first 2 fights as well; this time, it's organ-based and sets a menacing and epic tone to the battle. It's a great stage, it just isn't higher because it only contains 1 (or technically 2) stars.
    12. Tiny-Huge Island - I always rage while playing this stage for some reason. Probably because the stars take so long to collect that messing up is really annoying. I do love the concept and design of this stage, and as I get better at this game, I'll start liking the stage more. It has a lot of unique stars, and the whole tiny-huge aspect is cool. Maybe it will move up some spots soon.
    11. Snowman's Land - Now we leave levels that I like but anger me a lot to levels I like more. Snowman's Land is just fun for some reason. It's not too big, it's not too challenging, and it's not too creative, but it's fun. There's an igloo with a maze inside to explore, you get to climb up a massive snowman, face the Chill Bully, and zoom around on a Koopa Shell. See? Fun! Music is good too.
    This list got so long, top 10 is below!

    • @Wesley-76
      @Wesley-76 3 роки тому +2

      Top 10:
      10. Tall Tall Mountain - Yes, this mountain is tall. Admittedly, the 3 stars atop the mountain that are quite similar are kinda weird, but this'll make you appreciate the mountain-climbing aspect more. You'll be doing long jumps, dodging iron balls, bouncing on Goombas and Monty Moles, and more to get to the top. The secret slide is quite fun, as is the fact that there are multiple ways to climb the mountain. First, you'll be careful. Then, you'll learn the layout and start climbing it faster. Maybe you'll find shortcuts to help as well. Then you'll slow down again to collect 100 Coins. The lonely mushroom star is creative as well, as there are multiple ways to reach it.
      9. Whomp's Fortress - What? Whomp's Fortress this low? How could you? No, I like this stage! I simply like some others more. A floating fortress in the sky guarded by the Whomp King is a cool concept, and that great soundtrack often called the "main theme" really sets the mood. There's various platforms to explore, a tower to climb, Red Coins to find, Whomps and Thwomps to avoid, it's pure fun. There's a reason they brought it back in Galaxy 2, and I hope to see more Mario 64 levels return for future Mario games! I'd love to see a challenging King Bob-omb battle!
      8. Wet-Dry World - It's hard for me to choose whether I like Wet-Dry World or Jolly Roger Bay more at this point. I never felt the "negative emotional aura" that people talk about. This stage is puzzling, not quite Zelda difficulty, but it's a fun concept. The town area just makes the stage better. Climbing to the top of the main area is fun to do, as is looking around for the secrets. I like Mario water levels, and this one does it for me. It gives that mysterious feel with the music, also shared with Hazy Maze Cave.
      7. Jolly Roger Bay - My favorite water stage in the game (right now), Jolly Roger Bay isn't quite jolly itself, but it's certainly fun to play. The atmosphere looks scary, but the music calms the feeling and makes it feel more mysterious and relaxing. You'll be exploring a hidden cave, searching a sunken ship for treasure, blasting through the sky, and "playing" with eels. The 100-Coin star is fun to get too, as you basically explore the entire stage to find them, which takes a while, but isn't tedious or anything.
      6. Cool Cool Mountain - This mountain is COOL. Slipping and sliding your way down is fun, as is sliding down the slide. Later, you'll race a Penguin down the slide, which is easy to mess up if you're not careful. The Red Coins make you explore all over, and the Wall Kicks Will Work star is well-hidden. If you don't know how to wall jump well at this point, this star will certainly teach you! You'll meet many friendly faces around the course, such as a mama Penguin who's lost her baby, Tuxie, the baby who got lost, another lost baby, a world champion sledder Penguin to race, a Bob-omb Buddy, a snowman head who wants a body, and a snowman body looking for a head. It's an adventure! The music is a snowy remix of Bob-omb Battlefield's theme, and that's cool cool.
      5. Big Boo's Haunt - No more hiding from this stage, let's talk about it! The music is very creepy, the textures are creepy, things like a piano and books come alive, it's got the perfect atmosphere for a creepy ghost level! You'll be hunting down Boos, eventually fighting their leader, the one haunting the place. But Big Boo isn't done with you. The basement has a merry-go-round platform playing strange music, and Big Boo is waiting there with his minions! But then Big Boo hides up on the mansion's balcony, forcing you to find a way up there, and then settle things once and for all. You'll also find a library with a secret, Red Coins scattered about, and a secret room with a giant eyeball! This stage went wacky with the creepy elements, which is what helps make it so fun!
      4. Lethal Lava Land - Triple L doesn't lie, that lava is lethal! The main area has lots of creative platforms, from ones that rise and sink in the lava, to ones that move past fire, to ones you fight Bullies on, to a drawbridge, to sloped ones you ride on with a Shell, to shuffling puzzle pieces, to a spinning one, to a rolling log, to ones that tilt! Goodness, that's a lot of platforms! You'll be fighting Bullies, both the smaller kind and the Big Bullies, which you have to knock into the lava. You can fly around the stage with the Wing Cap, or slide across the lava with a Koopa Shell! Then you can hop into the volcano and find more stage below! The music really ties things together, providing a menacing, "hot-sounding" track as you play the stage.
      3. Hazy Maze Cave - This stage is a fun cave maze to explore, full of many secrets to discover. While the boulders are quite infuriating, everything else is super cool. Each of the rooms is unique. The starting area has death pits and two paths to take. The elevator room has a branching path leading to an elevator, and its main area has other types of elevator platforms used to get the Red Coins. The Hazy Maze room is a maze with toxic gas that drains your health! The black hole area has a round bottomless pit in the center with platforms on the sides, and a path that leads off to another section, but boulders are rolling down at you into the pit. Above, there is metal fencing that you can cling to to grab a star. The lowest section is a water-filled area where Dorrie lives, whom you can ride, and secret rooms, one that leads to a star, and one that leads to the Metal Cap stage. The music's instruments change based on where you're at (like Jolly Roger Bay's music) (Wet-Dry World does this too) which is a nice touch. This stage is fun and mysterious.
      2. Shifting Sand Land - We're back for one more rage-inducing stage, but one I've come to really like. The rage just shows that it's challenging. This is a desert level done right, with lots of sand, some that is safe, some that you sink in, and some that really puts the "quick" in quicksand! You will climb to the top of the pyramid, tussle with a bird who like stealing, ride a Koopa Shell safely across the sand, get caught up in a sandstorm, dodge deadly Tox Boxes, and grab the Wind Cap and take flight to nab Red Coins! That's not all, head inside the pyramid for more fun! There's a whole level inside, where you'll need to pass many different obstacles on your journey to the top. There's also secrets in the pyramid... If you stand on the four pillars outside, the top of the pyramid pops off, and you can access a special elevator that takes you to the deepest section of the pyramid to fight an ancient boss, two stone hands with eyes. Yeah, no kidding! This boss is a bit harder than most of the others in the game, as both hands take 3 hits to defeat, and it's easy to get shoved off the arena. The Lethal Lava Land track somehow fits the outside level very well, and the inside plays the mysterious cave theme that Hazy Maze Cave and Wet-Dry World also have. It's not limited space on the cartridge or anything, nah, it just fits that well! This is a great stage!
      1. Bob-omb Battlefield - There's not really a good explanation as to why this stage is so much fun, but it is. The first stage is done very right, and it's impossible not to smile at some point when playing it! There's a menacing Chain Chomp who guards a star, an island floating in the sky, friendly Bob-ombs and evil Bob-ombs, iron balls to knock you around, a spiraling mountain to climb, King Bob-omb at the top to fight, a speedy Koopa Troopa to race, a Shell to ride, Red Coins to find, cannons to shoot from, the list goes on! And probably the most iconic music in the game plays in this stage, which just adds to the joy of playing this stage.
      Hope you enjoyed my (long) list and let me know your list below!

    Aw man, I'm not that big of a tier list fan, and I wasn't that happy at first that this was almost an hour, but I'm definitely enjoying how this is making me look at the stages in comparison to each other as a guy who has played Super Mario 64 the least out of all the Mario games.

    S- Jolly Roger Bay Whomp's Fortress
    A- Tick Tock Clock, Lethal Lava Land, Cool Cool Mountain, Shifting Sand Land ( contreversal )
    B- Wet Dry World, Bob Omb Battlefield
    C- Hazy Maze Cave, Big Boo's Haunt, Tall Tall Mountain
    D- Tiny Huge Island, Snowman's Land
    F- Dire Dire Docks, Rainbow Ride
    Jolly Roger Bay is my favorite level by far because of how it emphasizes that you're in a peaceful level, but people under rank it just because it is a WATER level. Idk why it is such a big deal on a level that is water because this level is very special (in my opinion) and emphasizes that you're in a very relaxing level. And I feel that it is NOT supposed to be a GOOD level but a RELAXING level and I always just have fond memories with this level and just have great times with this level. IT is S-TIER! :D

    I played this game a lot when I was little, but I just beat it 100% for the first time about a half hour ago. Here's my list, excluding non-numbered stages:
    F: Dire Dire Docks
    D: Shifting Sands Desert
    C: Snow Man's Land / Jolly Roger Bay
    B: Tiny-Giant Island / Lethal Lava Land / Hazy Maze Cave / Boo Mansion
    A: Rainbow Ride / Tall Tall Mountain / Wet-Dry World / Thwomp Fortress / Bob-omb Battlefield
    S: Tick Tock Clock / Cool Cool Mountain
    I think you guys totally underrated Rainbow Ride. The waiting around is a little annoying, but the level is really challenging in a really intense way. The blue coin thing is a fair test of skill for what is a highly optional star. And the big ol' house was cool as hell. I actually got the 100 coins twice in a row since I died the first time and really wanted to see that "Hi Score" after beating the level. It's hard but doable. Just requires some patience.
    Also Tick Tock Clock is by far the best level in the game. The Thwomp star and getting 100 coins was so intense.
    I hate the desert level. It's just so aggravating to navigate. Lost more lives to that one than any other. The pyramid is cool but also very tedious.
    Dire Dire Docks is utterly pointless. No enemies and hardly any real obstacles. And you're right that the poles were sooooo slow. And getting 100 coins was simultaneously unbearably boring and frustrating with the coin pop in and that stupid vortex leading to the castle courtyard.
