People parrot the Jimmy Page Telecaster thing, but it's not accurate. Joe Walsh sold Jimmy his No. 1 '59 while Zeppelin was on tour for their first album. Jimmy has said in interviews the the sound of the second album is that Les Paul. That's not to say that he used Les Pauls exclusively On Zeppelin albums after the first one, but that's what he used primarily, in the studio and live.
Murphy lab isn’t that far off. If slash never retired it, it would look way more like the heavy aged versions. The scratches on the back will peel. The guitar wasn’t made in the 50s, give it another decade or two and it will begin to show if he plays it somewhat regularly. Murphy lab nails the finish checking and wear spots. Personally I’d still want a guitar to come new.
It's fantastic to see this topic here on Gibson's official channel. In one way or another, everyone dreamed of owning a Gibson as soon as they laid eyes on this replica.

They basically have to address it. Whilst Gibson don't make the best replicas it's still a replica of the brand name and will help them sell their overpriced R9s
There is nothing to address as long as Slashie Poo doesn’t play that illegal guitar in public anymore. Some behind the doors deal was made between Gibson and Slashie Poo. If Les Pauls are so bad compared to the illegal copy, why has Slash been endorsing Gibson Les Pauls to absolutely no end for 30 years?
I loved when Slash walked around with the Derrig and Mark looks exactly as nervous as I think I would feel if Slash was about to hand me that guitar. You can see him reach up when Slash walks around and realize Slash wasn't handing him the guitar and Mark puts his hands in his pockets not knowing what to do with them. I would be shaking in my boots holding that guitar. I remember the first time seeing Slash play this guitar at my cousins house and thinking I wanted to play like him. It's one of the few memories I have that I can directly attach it to my love of guitars, specifically the LP. One of the most iconic guitars of all time. There are few guitars that have been heard by more people or attempted to replicate than the Kris Derrig LP. GREAT video. Always love to see Slash. He always comes of as a super nice and likeable guy. Thanks to Mark and the team at Gibson!
This guitar helped save Gibson as a company. It’s Slash’s reference point guitar. Some instruments you just connect with, and they help you grow as a musician. No wonder he has used it the way he has.
I literally salivated over this guitar when I started learning at 13 years old around 1989. Every magazine that had GnR in it, I was looking for this guitar. LOL Slash always had the perfect swagger! Damn that was so cool back then.
And proceed to get his ass handed to him. I’m not a Slash fan per se but less of an Agnesi fan. He always annoyed me on the Norm’s videos even more than Norm if that’s possible.
Jim still runs music works today in Redondo Beach, Ca. This guitar story lives in the back of my mind every time I drop a guitar off, Jim says Kris drove across the country to get this maple from a farm in maine- if I remember correctly.
One of the most beautyfull bursts. A Les Paul is not only the product of the brand. If you have a Les Paul what gives you this real deal feeling it's only that feeling what matters.
Its cool that Gibson features this because at the end it honors Gibson, right? Other brands with their LP replicas got a different kind of attention from Gibson in recent years…🤷🏼♂️
It literally saved their brand. Gibson was in a dire state during the mid 80s and it took Slash rocking the Derrig to re-ignite interest in Les Pauls and Gibsons. At least they're acknowledging it now. Back when they were making replicas of the Derrig in 2010 they conveniently left out the fact that it was a Derrig, calling it the "Slash Signature Appetite for Destruction Les Paul."
I love that Mark addressed this. Kris Derrig + Slash arguably saved Gibson from certain bankruptcy in the 1980's, and then Appetite For Destruction was released making Slash and his Les Paul a household name. Gibson should make Kris an honorary Gibson masterbuilder, or commemorate him respectfully beyond this video somehow.
Bracelets and watches cause lots of scratches it seems… it’s interesting that a privately built instrument can cause such an influence on the public to reinvigorate them to the name on the headstock and basically make that company more money than if it was never made… thanks for the look at it Gibson/Slash
I never knew Slash famously played a Les Paul replica until watching this video just now. That kind of blew my mind. Has this been a secret until now? Or was this common knowledge this entire time? Did this Kris Derrig character ever get sued for building replicas before death?
Not sure when it became public knowledge, but from what I remember, there seemed to be an effort to conceal the fact initially. When I was growing up in the '90's, for example, I read an article based on interviews with Slash and Izzy that were apparently conducted shortly after Appetite For Destruction came out. In that article, Slash simply described the guitar their manager had brought him as "a '59 with alnico pickups"- he didn't say it was a Gibson, but didn't say it wasn't either. At some point (I don't remember when), I vaguely remember hearing rumors that it wasn't actually a Gibson, but for awhile, nobody seemed to know who actually made the guitar. It was only years later, after internet access became common, that I remember even hearing the name Kris Derrig. It's possible that it became known before that, but that's my personal recollection.
At the end of the day every Les Paul shaped guitar is a Gibson replica, seeing as they did this for slash maybe they’ll make an exception for James Hetfields Electra Flying V😎🔥🤔
Ever since I learned about this, I felt so much better about my $500 LP copy. I kinda feel like Slash brought Gibson back, all thanks to a copy....irony
It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Gibson forced Slash into making an endorsement deal back in the day they found out about the illegal guitar: “Either you endorse us (Gibson) or we are going after you and the maker of these illegal guitars to the fullest extent of the law.”
As the guitar gets older, the sound of it gets better and better. They all have a unique sound as they age. I love the video of the killing floor with Brian Johnson, Steve Tyler, and Slash.
Yeah, and what accelerated his death was the fact that Kris used vintage accurate nitro finishes, which were a lot more toxic compared to what Gibson was already using in the late 80's. The formula of nitro changed a lot for environmental and health concerns, modern nitro is still dangerous but it won't give you terminal cancer in the span of a year. The biggest downside of modern nitro is that it's filled to the brim with plasticizers to make it more durable, in other words, modern nitro finished Gibsons won't age like those guitars from the golden era :/
The moral of the story is it’s illegal to use another company’s name. Why does this concept go over your head? If you owned a company, would you be okay with it if someone else started copying your products and using your name?
Yup my favorite lp style guitar that i own among my actual lp, is a $500 dollar gretsch that i customized, i threw in american pots and switch, threw in a deusenberg p90 neck and grand vintage humbucker. The tone and sustain is amazing.
The Gibson Custom Shop did a series of Slash Signature AFD guitars back in 2010, and to date they were the most accurate reproductions of the Derrig, although most were VOS rather than aged. Certainly different from the current crop of Slash sigs that Gibson currently offers (based more on the first guitars he got from Gibson). Good luck trying to score one, though. Lowest price I've seen for one was $12k.
@ sounds like it’s easier to resurrect kris Derrig and pay him to make one again. I ain’t got that kinda scratch lying around. Lol thanks for responding, much appreciated 💪😎🎸
that's a pretty special guitar Slash, maybe one of the most special axes ever built? all I can think of is maybe Kossoffs 59'? pretty special company there for sure . . .one day will it go into the rock museum or are you willing to let it continue on making music in another's hands?
Wait a second to wrap my head around, if Slash would be on a desert island he would use a '59 replica when he has all the genuine ones. I understand sentimental value and bond etc but how is this exactly endorsing anything when only a Gibson is good enough? :) jokes aside huge fan here, love you guys for showing this.
This is probably one of the most iconic Les Pauls out there, and it's not even a Gibson. I have always loved the look of this guitar, and it sounds absolutely incredible
The Derrig and the rented Marshall amp (JCM800 i think from memory) that made Slash's sound of AFD. Now they make replicas of the replica which is quite funny. He never managed to track down that Marshall used for AFD. I do love the notion that people buy expensive guitars and then take pick ups out and pots etc.
So, if Slash did multiple appearances with a Gibson Les Paul, did interviews, sold magazines, sold Les Paul guitars and more, did Slash, Gibson, and many others lie to make money? Was it known that the guitar wasn't a Les Paul in the first place? IDK.
Why does'nt Gibson take any legal action against these guys who build these expensive replicas? They are all over China's builders and stopping them at Customs Ports and confiscating the Chibsons. But it's ok for Slash to have replicas and now Gibson is making replicas of them. Sounds like Celebrity entitlement
Because, on a business perspective, they made the most of it by luring him into being a sponsored Gibson artist and then selling many instruments thanks to his reputation. The lost profit on this guitar is minimal vs the earnings they got.
Kris Derrig passed away in 1987. If I remember right, it was actually from creating these copies and spraying the nitrocellulose lacquer in his apartment without proper ventilation or masks which poisoned him.
No. A lot of vintage Gibsons were like that because they used any bobbins they had lying around, black or white, when building the guitar. The pickup covers were meant to stay on so it didn't matter at the time what colour they were underneath.

I guess that's why I have two replicas... Keeping in mind that to be original, they CAN'T BE GIBSON MADE.

It’s refreshing to see a guitar that shows it’s been used rather than getting that look from a lab.

Props to Mark and Gibson for acknowledging this historic replica….
What choice do they have? It can't be easy to issue more threats while your foots still in your mouth from the last time.
Legendary...from when he plugged it in at the start of the Sweet Child video I wanted one
Ya remember the Gibson warning video…” we’re coming for you “ loll
Gotta love how beat up it looks , considering it was only on the road for a short period of time 🔥
What a beauty
Legendary Tone and Unique Design. I love that guitar!🤘😎🎸
Not even Gibson argues that the Derrig Slash Les Paul isn't very much a part of the legend of the '59 Sunburst Les Paul Standard.
