The french eating hot dogs and speaking English. You would never see the European french living this lifestyle. I think these people are brave and fun loving like all french people.
The speaking Enlish part I agree with you, less true with the better educated younger people but Hotdogs, I've been here for 50 years and have always known Hotdogs! The bread is different as it is usually made with a piece of French baguette but it's still a sausage in bread. Sometimes the sausage is dipped in hot Dijon mustard before being slipped into the hole in the middle of the bread or ketchup.
They aren’t French. They are Québecois. There is actually quite a large cultural difference. French Canadians are as French as Torontonians are English. There are both strong cultural links to their mother counties, but both English & French Canadians are still very North American, eating their hot dogs & playing shuffleboard.

When I moved to Hollywood I was astonished how many Canadians were a big part of the area. They owned it from Jollywood to Pompano. This aesthetic you lend to this doc is exactly what it called for. And the Flea Market, pure French. Amazing you too felt the impact of this. Thanks for a great doc.
Mona G. J'espère que vous avez raison. Mais venant de la CBC, j'en suis loin d'être sûr, car les Québécois y sont présentés comme un peu ridicules et ghettoïsés (lire les commentaires des anglophones...).
What happens psychologically is that the older you get, the older "older" seems to you. When you're 20...40 is old. But when you're 40...60 is old, and so on. Being old...it's got a lot to do with you mind...some people think old at 55...some at 85 think young and are interesting to talk to. Twenty-somethings are extremely boring to talk to, but they have lovely skin and hair.
I dont know why but french canadian elderly got this kind of kindness that is unique. Maybe i fell nostalgic because i had good great parent ... Entk reste que quand tes quebecois , tu l'est peut importe ou thabite

great film but the older Québécois we see in it are in no way representative of the majority of Québécois men of that generation. Not the ones living in Québec full-time at least. My uncles are of their age and they are nothing like that on the contrary they're funny as f and it’s great fun to be around them at parties. Don’t let their rough, grumpy ways fool you. Get to know them and in no time you’ll agree with me
Dude paid $5000 for his place 21 years ago. That's $238 a year! He'd pay that and more for only one night in a hotel. Even if land promoters only gave him a dollar to buy him out, he'd still end up winning.
My parents are retired, they purchased a mobile home and spend winter in Florida. The locals are very patient and tolerant of our french canadian elders. Im glad they chose Florida over Cuba, dominican rep or mexico. Our elders can be naive and vulnerable. Thank you Floridians for watching over our elders, i hear good things.

This was heart warming! Many of the racist anti French comments here are not, though. The québécois aren't always treated nicely if they can't speak English, and that's a shame because they don't cause any problems and they help the economy! Québécois are always welcome, if you ask me!
@tdot22 By suggesting that all pur laine québécois are racist and want to ban the hijab is an ignorant remark, and ironically, a stereotype that you chose to spread. That negates any argument you make, in my book. PS, the hijab debate is going off on a tangent, let's stick to the topic at hand
Hi tdot22, there is a lot more to what you are complaining about. When I served and worked in the Middle East, we did our best to respect the local customs and religious practices of our host country. We realized that we were guests in countries that had traditions and a history much deeper (longer) than ours (North Americans). When Canada opened its doors i.e. wide opened to immigration, some newcomers rejected traditional French Canadian customs - Christmas became "the Holidays", "la Saint Jean-Baptiste" became the "Fete des Québécois" as not to upset our immigrant population. During Ramadan, I dressed and acted respectfully of Muslim's traditions and celebrations - I did the same for Jewish celebrations while serving in Israel. Coming back to Québec (Montréal especially), realized that holiday names were changed, gymnasiums/outdoor fields were "placarded" were kids practiced physical fitness (PT in school) as not to "tempt" other denominations... and strangely enough, I could not recognize my own origins. This is what Québécois are opposing to - some immigrants come to Québec (and Canada) creating the same conflicts and bringing the same issues that made them leave their country of origin in the first place. Some have been using a very liberal Canadian legal system, to reject Canadian customs, traditions, history, ... For many Québécois, a face veil, headgear (in some cases by police officials), ... is seen as a threat especially for the older generations who are feeling displaced by these massive ethnic displacements. Turn the situation around, if a large group of Christians (especially Roman Catholic if you refer to Québécois) would establish large communities within Muslin states, how would they be "received" or "accepted".
lancelot1953 They would NEVER be accepted in Muslim countries but expect western countries to do what they would NEVER DO! Unfortunately, we have liberal politicians that let this go on.
4:15 Wow! She knows that "table" in French = "table" in English. And, she almost knows that "bon après-midi" in French= "good afternuw.., afterwun.., good awernut, ..." Anyway, hamburger=hamburger. That's it.
You must be so darn lucky to be from Canada to spend leisure in Florida after retirement! It so nice life like dat with lemonade , Beach, pool and sun and a pair of floral shades yellow and red! Wow!
Louisiana and Florida are the only states in the us that has a lot of French speakers in Louisiana it's required to learn French in school and in Florida there's a lot of Spanish and French and you have to pick one of those languages to learn in school
James I KNOW that people calling someone 'cute' is rarely, if ever, meant in a bad way, and perhaps I am just over-sensitive these days, coming up to full retirement, but....I have mixed feelings when I hear young people calling older people 'cute'. It almost feels as though they are dismissing seniors as being 'irrelevant' or not to be taken seriously. I may be the only one, but...well, does anyone else feel oddly uncertain when they are getting older & hear this? Just wondering. (I also enjoyed the video, James, & found the characters fascinating!)
@anders damin Yes, exactly. I wonder if kids under 10 years old feel this way too? I hate the fact we are all aging, but when I consider the alternative...it is better!

"There are no English speaking people here, so we like it." The anger and outrage that would come from these same people if we (English speaking Canadians) said this. I am so tired of the double standard.
It's because they can't speak english and just wish to chill in their hole... If they were active citizen who do not want to learn english, then it would be outrageous
@tdot22 We do not hate muslims and we do not hate immigrants. If you know a little bit Québec's history, you would know we throw out religion of our lives in the 60's because religion kept us in dark for way too long. We do not want to see a religion (any religion) take over our lives or the lives of the people we welcome here.
Konda sixtytoo It was translated, but of course you didn’t understood what she said which was: I like it here because I don’t have to speak English (because she clearly doesn’t speak English, yet trying to learn)... but obviously as she is a French speaking Canadian you’re outrage and want to bash Quebec. Just a normal day in Canada.
theyre old, it wont do much. When youre younger, any given period of sun exposure is more cumulatively harmful because you will have to endure the long term effects and risks whereas at their age they are mostly locked into those kinds of health outcomes. Let them live comfortably
The condominium I live in in Sunny Isles Beach (Miami, FL) is full of apartments where French-Canadians stay. During a certain time of the year, the building seems so empty and then a few months later it gets packed again. You'll drive around the streets and see tons of license plates from Quebec. @alecrebel omg...seriously? you have more inbred hicks here in the USA and in the south for sure than you do with french Quebecers

Joannie Lafreniere is a talented treasure! Being québécoise myself I found myself amazed at how she managed to capture this microculture so well and with respect. Watching with my anglo husband who grew up visiting his grandparents in Florida, we were most impressed with her cinematography. The shots/set-up/frames are reminiscent of Wes Anderson IMO. The music is right on point. A delight to watch and looking for Joanne's other projects.
Agathe doesnt have a tan…...she's toasted!!!
Yes!
A bit well done I'd say, LOL
@@lisamartin3734 I think she is inspiring.
It is obvious that tanning brings her joy and she's 85 years old, so why the heck not?
That's actually what she was joking about in french and the english translater didn't translate the joke...
To be fair, their English is better than my French, probably better than most English Canadians' even.

Pepsi and a chocolate bar is the MOST Quebec snack ever.
They should move to places like Vermillion Parish in Louisiana. Cajun French is very similar to Quebec French. Plus it’s also very sunny.

Oui !
They aren’t French. They are Québecois. There is actually quite a large cultural difference.
French Canadians are as French as Torontonians are English. There are both strong cultural links to their mother counties, but both English & French Canadians are still very North American, eating their hot dogs & playing shuffleboard.
French Canadians are culturally more similar to English speaking Canadians and Americans that's why. It's North America, not Europe.
Hello my dear Canadian friends..My husband and I do not speak French..but we loved your video from beginning to end. So much fun..you know how to live. After reading the comments, you realize Americans have a soft spot for Quebeckers.
And all the bad comments comes from Angryphones from Canada.
Julien Labry oh shut up lol. You can’t know where commenters are from.
Wasup Fool Reality hurts.
@Rohan Dahiya Pluta Québec bashing is more about jealousy and envy. They hate Québec because people are happy, confident and the women are beautiful.
Rohan Dahiya Pluta I think Americans finds Quebeckers to be chill and relax.
They are intrigued by a culture that puts quality of life first before getting rich in material.
And the French culture has a reputation to be romantic.
Just saw this video a little late but it hits home for me since I used to go visit my grandparents every winter and everything in this video seems so familiar and reminds me of my time with them. Je t’aime grand maman et tu me manques beaucoup.
One on the most enjoyable docs we've watched! Enjoyed every minute of it and these wonderful people!
That shot of the retirees chanting their ABC's was awesome.
From 20:01 to 20:24, observe how this man walks like a young man with a brisk, even pace, not slow and not fast.
This video made my heart smile. I want to live amongst people like this when I retire.
What a wonderful video. 💖💖💖
"When I get old!" That's what a few of them kept saying. Too cute!
Agathe is simply wonderful... her spirit just exudes confidence, joy, harmony, fun and a touch of mischief!!!! I adore her!!!
I am in love with this film! Congratulations, Joannie Lafreniere, you've really captured the joie de vivre & sense of fun of Quebecois, & in particular Quebecois women. I also love the Wes Anderson-esque aesthetic & visual compositions. Lovely lovely film, I enjoyed this immensely.
great film but the older Québécois we see in it are in no way representative of the majority of Québécois men of that generation. Not the ones living in Québec full-time at least. My uncles are of their age and they are nothing like that on the contrary they're funny as f and it’s great fun to be around them at parties. Don’t let their rough, grumpy ways fool you. Get to know them and in no time you’ll agree with me
These people are adorable. Makes me want to retire in FL.
I love listening reminds me of my parents, they were French Canadian 😍
I adore Agathe.
She's a hoot, & I hope I've her verve for life when I'm her age.
The cinematography is absolutely extraordinary….these people need their own show.
This was beyond cute, funny, irreverent and out of this world. Thanks for making me giggle!
what an awesome short film, thanks for making it...so much wisdom shared here :-D
Dude paid $5000 for his place 21 years ago. That's $238 a year! He'd pay that and more for only one night in a hotel. Even if land promoters only gave him a dollar to buy him out, he'd still end up winning.
Sonia B he’d still have to pay monthly fees to the campsite though!
What about rent?
OMG around 14:00, this is my favorite moment XD "Yes, no, toaster, osti!"
They are so wonderful and happy. Please come back when it gets cold.
Respect our elderly French Canadians. We are all worthy.
Respect all human race. America could learn from the Canadians. Viva la Canada!

This was heart warming! Many of the racist anti French comments here are not, though. The québécois aren't always treated nicely if they can't speak English, and that's a shame because they don't cause any problems and they help the economy! Québécois are always welcome, if you ask me!
I'd love to practice mon francais avec elles!
Very true
Tres bien (!), et bonjour de Los Angeles! (Is that correct?)

Wow , mechant documentaire. Tres profond. For sure an Oscar at the next academy awards.
These old people are so cute 😁
@tupacamaru2 okay, jesus it's just a word? "doesn't inspire passion in somebody" you're taking this way too deep, my guy. smhh

"There are no English speaking people here, so we like it." The anger and outrage that would come from these same people if we (English speaking Canadians) said this. I am so tired of the double standard.

These people really need to start using sunscreen.
theyre old, it wont do much. When youre younger, any given period of sun exposure is more cumulatively harmful because you will have to endure the long term effects and risks whereas at their age they are mostly locked into those kinds of health outcomes. Let them live comfortably
