- Adding electric start to my gas powered air compressor, Honda gx160 engine. Chinese Amazon kit was actually very easy to install. Kit was $80 totally worth it.

Your comments about the flywheel casing not fitting are interesting. I have just fitted a kit to a Honda GX160, which came without the red flywheel casing ( cheaper). I had to made a bracket up to mount the control box onto the original flywheel casing on its bottom mounting,( simple modification) and cut the casing to clear the starter motor. However, when I put the pull start back on, the bolts ( the originals) fouled with the fan, and stopped the engine turning. Problem solved by shortening them. However, I suspect the new flywheel with the starter ring is slightly larger (wider, front to back) than the original, which caused the problem. I am not going to take it apart now to measure it, as it work fine, but this might be of interest to anyone who encounters the same problem.

Super impressed!
There is a bypass on the fill side of the tank that will allow you to start it even after the tanks have pressure. Should be on the copper line down by the tank. But thanks for making the video, I'm going to use it to install mine.
I changed that later on. I believe it’s called a pilot valve. It still starts easier with the tank drained tbh.

The part that you said you didn't know where it went, while the engine is off, try and feel the fly wheel just under the motor, at the point you can touch it is where it needs to be fitted.
I think a pressure switch can be used to kill engine spark when the tanks are full. Automatically starting the engine when the tanks are close to empty is another story, though. Does the engine get enough runtime to sufficiently charge the battery? It probably takes 20-30A to start it (35A+ on the GX390 clone) so that's a significant draw down on the battery.
Always wait for the compressor to fill, vent and idle down before shutting off or it will be hard pulling and hard starting
You need an unloader valve for starting. You just flip it up, start it, then flip it back down. You won’t have to drain the air every single time and wait for it to rebuild(not that it takes very long anyway).
It’s Been done since then
Is the battery 12 volt to the starter
Would this kit work on a gx270
Is there a way to hook up like a pressure switch to make it shut off and in automatically?
They do have one that’s supposed to idle down. But it’s not functioning currently
I installed the electric start but won’t turn over I took the fly wheel off and lined up the rectifier best I could I got it to turn over but it was making a horrible almost knocking noise. So I took everything back off I had to order a carb it’s a knock off but it’s suppose to be a replica please help
Drain the air tank and try again
Originally you had an on/off switch. What did you do with that yellow wire.
Plugs into that little silver box
@@FcDominick Thank you
Is it possible to start the engine with the hand crank but without the key?
Key works like a car needs to be on
@@FcDominick So if I want to start it with the pull starter I need to have the key on "on"? (In case the battery is dead)
@@Dodo-kk7mb yes that is your new on off switch
@@FcDominick Ok, thank you
So, how did you bolt the the thing that keeps the battery charged to the two bolt holes? Your video skips over that. Thank you in advance!
If you have a time stamp I could better help. If I think I know what you mentioned. I believe I just threw 2 supplies bolts in the holes. You want it close but not hitting the flywheel like the magneto
@@FcDominick Thank you. 1:15 is the time. My holes are not threaded. Yours do not appear to be threaded. I could be wrong. Thank you again!
@@TheFreshRinse mine are threaded deeper in there. The holes big and tapers smaller where it’s threaded. Like something would use a dowel pin with a thru bolt
@@FcDominick Sadly, mine are tapered, but not threaded
@@TheFreshRinse honestly it doesn’t do much to maintain the battery anyway. I’d continue on. I’m looking into a mini solar panel to maintain mine
You have a link for the kit you purchased?
Wztepeng Electric Start Kit Flywheel Ignition Switch Kit Compatible with Honda GX160 5.5HP GX200 6.5HP Switch Starter Motor Lgnition FlyWheel Fan Cover a.co/d/a0luqRH
All kits are about the same
Can u still pull start it ??
Yes. You have that as a backup
Save for future transactions
Honda 5.5 electric start
I got mine to start but now it wont shut off at all. Any ideas?
Don’t have the kill wired properly
@@FcDominick my kit is slightly different than yours. I dont have as many wires as you do from the key starter
@@dylanadams4619 maybe you can leave the factory on off switch And use it that way. Flip switch on then use the key for starter. Or find the wire that kills and. And put a secondary toggle switch in to cut the power
For reference the wire going to the coil/ magneto is what turns it off. If you interrupt that signal it will turn off. Other way run
@@FcDominick the factory switch wont work either and i didnt mess with that one at all.
Are you talking about the brown wire-coil?
Welding battery brackets to your tank at that spot could mean you just turned it into a bomb !! NOT supposed to do that !!
The end caps are welded onto it factory. Welding is how stuffs made.
The motor/ compressor mount is welded to the tanks. The legs are welded to the tanks. Don’t believe everything you read on the internet.
