What are the odds of the piston failing right on the face of the triple? Couldn't it have happened while warming it up in the pits? Or during a straightaway? Perhaps in a corner? Nope.
    Unreal.

Thanks for sharing a clearly tough memory with us. It’s brave to put so much of yourself out there and it’s something appreciated. I always thought it was just me, feeling a cumulative loss in confidence (and speed) over the years after repeated injuries. I was just an amateur... but it’s good to hear from a former Pro.

Just a old B Senior rider, but I remember after I broke my femur going head on into a tree, I never was the same. Slowed down even more when I broke my neck.
I couldn't help but wonder what was going through your mind that night, watching the replay, we were all amazed that you popped right up. Even more amazed that you snapped the bike in half, but it was a good feeling when you got up.
Thanks for the work in RacerX too Ping!

i personally think that if the triple clamps didn't break he would have been in big trouble with that bike coming up behind him full force.

exactly. they absorbed alot of energy, just like crumple zones.

Ping was so very lucky to escape without serious injury.... This wreck is why I am meticulous about maintaining my bike...and keeping it reliable. Having a mechanical on a jump face one of my greatest fears.

Hi David, I saw your crash and to be honest I feel that the brake of the bike when it hit the final jump help you to not get a worse injury... believe the same happen to me but my bike did not broke on this way and I broke my femur and hit my back pretty bad... becuase the bike hit me after the case.

They didn't call you "Pudge" for nothing, don't you think that poor 125 was working overtime to get you up and over that triple? Probably a big bore kit, piston failure? Love your columns, Pudgy Pingree #101. lmao, jk
