oh yes they would, because the great Joe Higgs took Bob Marley and the Wailers under his wings, fine tune them, then Desmond saw talent and made them great as well, just as great as the man called Lee Scratch Perry the mastermind behind it all
I am blessed to be born in 1962. Grew up around all Reggae Motown drunk & stOned parents in the UK. What a free & funky childhood with no rules except come home when the street lights come on. This is one of my favourite early memories of dancing at a block party with all my neighbours to this beautiful song :)
I am not saying that one is better than the other and it’s not a miracle performance to pull that off by professional drummer today, but I have massive admiration for the drummer. The rhythm creeps faster with long span of time and this mf does not miss a beat. Respect. 🫡
Voice-wise in the world of reggae music Desmond Dekker is the untouchable Bob Marley was the most charismatic and had the most lyrically potent reggae catalogue, along with Jimmy Cliff. As an Individual song "The Israelites" cannot be contained!

No wonder why Jamaican should always give The Almighty God Thanks, because of all the things we as a people went through and still going through, yet we still standing tall. Likkle but wi tallawah!
Wow, what a show I've seen many young people who definitely have the rhythm to the music, but I certainly remember when Desmond did this song I believe he wrote in 1969. He was simply amazing in, like with some of Jamaica reggae artists of the day women loved dancing to it, a fair few youngsters here in the UK. Some of my family are carribean, so it taken me many years to get to dance with the rhythm in the manner that other family members did at that time. Although they came from a different lsland its universally recognised, and British bands are trying to keep reggae up there. RIP bro your not forgotten, and the music continues even though the sadness your no longer here to enjoy Desmond . Thank you for your music.
I didn't know this version yet. This one makes me even happier than the original one. Compliments for that nice dancing girl in that red and white skirt by the way. Greetings from Holland.
Wasn't the dancing girl in the red and white skirt just brilliant she definitely had the rhythm and exactly the right movement for this lovely song. Obviously, she appeared to now at least some of the lyrics to Israelites I for myself first heard the song back when it hit in 1969. This was just a year later. I was a mere 6 years old in 1970. My father came from the carribean, not Jamaica, but the music was universal in the West Indies region. I've only just learned to dance with rhythm similar to the young girl as when I watched others in my family who had rhythm to dance to Desmond or any other artist. I just couldn't do it. I was too shy away, but nevertheless, I gave it a try, but it was without success, so I considered myself quite pathetic. I'm my own worst critic, but I suppose it shouldn't have mattered in any case it will always be a brilliant memory, one of many for my childhood days.❤
You know people today don't realise how powerful a crossover music Ska was. EVERYBODY loved it. You'd go to a ska club and there'd be blacks, whites, mods, rockers you name it. Yes there was violence outside but rarely inside and it wasn't racial, usually over some girl who'd been playing men. It was a truly unifying British culture.
Rod Fleming so true, i sat outside a working mans club with Mr Dekker around 1970, just me & him, i was too dam shy to talk to him :'( one of my big regrets, but at 63 i am still a rare vinyl collector x
Yes we all love Desmond and this video is special. Forget all the soul less trash they turn out these days. Go back in time and re-live the days of the mods. Search recordings of Ska and Blue beat with artists such as Desmond, Prince Buster, Toots and the Maytals, Don Drummond and Laurel Aitkin. Long live Ska!!

Most definitely ❤

What a great artist and a terrific song. As exciting now as it was in the 60s. Wonderful.
love this guy - was thrilled to see "The Clash" do a live cover of this song back in the late 70's - Paul Simenon was a huge reagree fan.
The era when music was about spirit, soul and performance. Not about machines and electronics. Desmond was truly a great artist.
When music was original music!
The girls in the skirt is so beautiful, dancing so great. Love Desmond Dekker! This gig makes me think of Sam Cooke Live in '63 Harlem Square Club.
Yea she's not af! Ill bet she was fun!!
yes she is perfect !!!
She’s probably a grandmother now. Hopefully still swinging to this tune.
This video shows how time flies.
