Kind of true for a lot of predators, don’t really have the knowledge we have of everything in nature, potential prey could also be potential danger if you’re not very familiar with it, and getting hurt in the wild can be a death sentence so how desperate are you to probe the unknown (to you)?
Predators like bobcats have a keen sense of prey they can take without running a high risk of getting injured. If they get seriously injured they will starve because they won't be able to hunt. A mother protecting her babies is not usually a good risk.
Are you serious? I like possums but they stand no chance at all against a bobcat. People forget that bobcats have a pretty strong biteforce despite being small and ofc they have cat agility and possums aren’t really fighters.
@@lucidcactus2541you didn't bother reading i guess. OP said injured, not killed. Bobcats aren't known for their pharmacies and antibiotics, so getting into a tussle with an aggressive mother can be dangerous for long-term survival. It's called risk assessment on an instinctual level. Bobcats who risked it died and weren't able to successfully pass genes that led to more reckless behavior.
@@lucidcactus2541 You're totally right. A possum stands no chance against a bobcat, and if they fought, the possum's pretty much done for. But just 'cause the bobcat has the upper hand doesn’t mean it’s automatically gonna try to hunt the possum. Even if the prey's weak, predators still gotta think about how much energy they’ll use up and the risk of getting hurt. And if it’s a mama possum, she might fight back harder. If there's a chance of getting a serious injury while trying to grab a meal, the bobcat might just be like, 'Eh, whatever, you can go.' Of course, if the bobcat’s desperate, it might go for the possum anyway.
The cat didn't kill the possum because it was full of food already. If it was hungry it wouldn't have hesitated at all and would have killed in a blink and a half. Wild animals are vicious and have no compunction or pity for what they kill.
Have any of you seen the teeth on a Possum? They will mess you up real quick. I use to raise Emus, & every once a while they would get into there feed, & would attack my Emus. I had to use habitat traps to catch them, & have them removed. & only a Possum was stupid enough to take on a 6 foot bird that weighed 95 to 120 lbs. that walked like Raptors, & had talons that could rip a human gut open. Possums are one tough animal.
You got to have a good reason to engage in a fight that has a high probability of injuring yourself, was the bobcat going to go apeshit on a mom with kids for a meal? Nope. Could it outlast a fight to death with a possum, probably. Bobcats got zero interest to prove anything on that possum. It moved on for a easier meal.@@nag2129
