Good morning i used rail road track ties it's been five years now i still drive my old 1951 Ferguson tractor over it .Even when yours was built it still is a great bridge well done sir Captain

Wow, Captain, that title for this video nailed my philosophy. I moved from having to work part time at an apartment complex plus two other part time jobs, (because small cities pay so well) to afford the rent, to owning a ranch, by doing exactly that. I also did what you do, learned a lot of skills by doing stuff on my own that most folks won't even try. I apologize for the long comment, but as always, thanks for the video and take care.

Hey Cap’n and Admiral, try a cable swing bridge. You did say walking bridge so I’m not thinking any vehicles. In Bulge Park, Victoria Australia there is a large swing bridge all suspended on steel cables. It may be a recycle project for worn crane cables because they do need replacing for safety with the heavy lifts but they would still be great for the job. Well you asked and I thought, now that’s a dangerous combo.

Cable bridge needs experience and engineering...
Just a rope bridge with one person crossing puts tremendous load on the anchors.
It's a force triangle and the straighter the load line, the higher the force multiplication from the weight on that line.
Run a tight, straight line between fish scales, then hang a small weight and you'll be surprised how much load the scales read.
Mike the railing turned out hood. I like the style of the current bridge. So maybe a timber bridge with steel beams as supports, or maybe a old trailer frame. I hear that Man Behind the Scenes has one that DP wants gone. Whatever you decide it will be interesting. Stay safe brother

Kleeman Khronikles continue.....not only looks like a lot of hard work, it IS a lot of hard work. I like the railing and good on ya for getting those locust posts from locally grown 'stock.' I think you would have fun on your place if....when it cam time to replace the bridge.....that you install a zip line over it. It's make those hikes in the woods more fun for members of the Admiral's junior staff. Great channel....great content.

Mike the bridge is looking fabulous. Since you live in Indiana, I was going to recommend a cover bridge, that the state is so famous for. However, because your expenses added up to over $500 on bolts and hardware, I suggest that, when it is time to build a new bridge, it does not require you to spend that much again! How about trying to build a Da Vinci's Bridge. Only the Bridge top will require the bolts to hold it down to the arch frame. Simple, but strong to support daily traffic.
Side Note: As much as I like your Ford 555, it sometimes seems too cumbersome to use on projects. Maybe you can hop a ride with DP and Clint (C&C) to one of those auctions and pick up a AGT H12 mini excavator. After watching you work with the 305, It seems like a good investment for your homestead projects.
Because you do what most people won’t attempt, you will later have what they will say is impossible to achieve …control over your own destiny. 💥
Plus you had fun along the way while you did it your own way in your free time.
This recent project really highlighted the difference between the backhoe and the mini excavator. I always thought - yeah you can do most of what you need with that backhoe. Turns out the excavator is pretty darn useful in different ways. Good you can rent one when you really need it.

New bridge; maybe some of DP's red clay pipe that you moved would be a starting point for a bridge, it would last forever.
Bonus, you could use the dump truck to haul it and the 555 to place it.
I built a creek bridge out of 32’ high voltage power line cross ties. I used 8’ parking blocks on either side of the creek as a base, laid the 3 cross ties and then decked it out with treated 2”x6”’s.
The railings is just what that bridge needed Mike. looks great
Michael since you have the propane torch you should use the ancient Japanese method of preserving wood in the ground. Shou Sugi Ban. It keeps the wood from rotting and the bugs out.
That works for high resin woods like pine. The heat draws up and hardens the pine sap into "amber" type product that is hard as stone. Does not work on "hardwoods" as well.
@@markpashia7067 Well an ounce of prevention goes a long way even if it is hardwood.
I have a Park Model trailer sitting on my property. It’s 8 x 40 ft and the frame is c channel steel. The frame would be a great base for the walk bridge. There are also many derelict single wide trailers all over the area. People will give them away if someone would just come get em. Anyway, use the frame, use treated 2x6 for the deck, and wrought iron 42” fence panels for the sides

I think another stone bridge with an arch would be really cool and could last 500 years. Make it so you you don’t use mortor and no cracks will form. Build a removable arched frame. Wedge in the stones with a key stone and make sure it drains water.
A suspension bridge would be great and last a long time too.😊

Hi Mike. Who needs a gym membership when you have a post pounder? Leg day, arm day and torso day, all in one! I don't really have any great ideas for a bridge. I was thinking something nautical to go along with the YT yacht, but I only came up with a gang plank and I'd say the bridge you have is much better than that right now. Maybe something with chains for railings. That would sort of be like the bridge you walk up to board a ship.

Like the idea of a flatbed- lowboy for the bridge. A flatbed RR car minus the wheels and “trucks” would be awesome…. Just logistics and $$ of getting it there would probably be an issue .

Captain, Maybe in your search you can find a few old I-Beams from a basement or an old Truck frame and use your welding skills to build the bridge Frame. Painted it should last a very long time. Great Video.

I was thinking maybe for the next bridge you could use decommissioned oil field pipe. It would last a very long time and could be a terrific opportunity to do some welding experimentation. Cutting holes in pipe A for pipe B to go into or cutting pipe B to saddle onto pipe A.
There’d be all kinds of opportunities to be creative.
I’ve seen old oil field pipe advertised on marketplace and it seems reasonable.
It’s a thought.

I bet with a few yards of concrete and some rebar... a fella could pour over the wood bridge and stamp stone to make it look like a natural walkway. Dress it up with church stone and call that a permanent solution. It's already half done. G1 Captain!
My advice...
Just keep doing what you are doing.
A typical untreated timber bridge lasts between 5&10 years depending on the climate you are in. With monitoring and visual inspections throughout the year, you will see as well as The Admiral and the kids, I'm pretty sure somebody is going notice things that arise.
Between now and the time you will actually need to replace that bridge, I'm positive someone on your crew will have a suitable idea.🤙

You are one productive feller! I admire hard work. I've been accused of being a work-a-holic and you work more than I ever did! All I can think of is the guy who is going to be mad at you when his saw blade hits that screw when that tree is being sliced in to boards! I've done it on my sawmill. It will make you scream!

Hello Mike. Excellent cost recover on the 2 x 4's. A van trailer long enough to span the creek and have good ankers on the ends would make for a nice crossing. The problem would be getting it to the spot. Have good days!

i know a guy that used a old trailer house frame.he sand blasted it.primed and painted it.he also welded 3in. pipes on the side for the railings .

Cap’n, old trailer house frames are hell for stout… and cheap too! There’s always some old abandoned mobile mansion that needs torn down… the 555 with its extends-boom and grapple would make quick work of it. And bonus… the footage would be golden.
You may be able to get four of them from one job, if long enough. That will make your decking options almost endless!
Now bud, I’ll be watching to see what you decide… just keep doing what YOU want!!!
I looked at some of them when I built my bridge. I would have gone that route but I thought that it needed some stiffening of the frame. My welder is electric and the nearest power is a mile and a half away as the crow flies.
@@daneclark3161 yep. They’ll need X bracing or bottom ties along with decking. But, Cap’n has a generator powered welder… that might work for him. And besides… the sparks landing in the dry leaves below will make even more great footing!!! 🤓

If you had the money and time. Making a minute covered bridge would fit your goals for the property perfect. You can take a few saplings right now and bow them to the length and arch you want. And when you get ready, they will be there for you to make your main saports for the bridge for free like a regular covered bridge. Love your Chanel Mike and especially when you ask for suggestions for future projects.

Hear me out. When it comes time to replace the wooden bridge, what about replacing it with a shipping container? Yes I sea-can is an eye sore, but with a little bit of doctoring up you could easily have something structurally sound that looks like it's from a long time ago. Should be easy, just go find the tree that grows magic wands and problem solved. I can just imagine the effort it would take to drive a shipping container through the woods let alone a ravine, but just food for thought.

Mike your welding skills give you the chance to make a long term bridge and as another comment suggested a cable bridge with maybe pallet racking cross beams welded together lengthways then pipe welded to the outer edges for the handrail, uprights and to run the cable through. It is very versatile and very often seen cheap on marketplace.

Just bought new sneakers, week old only three miles on em and they squeak-squeak-squeak, of course I could return em for another pair but you might get the ones that the soles fall right off if you happen to walk through a small rain puddle. Ain't sneakin up on nobody I suppose, thanks Snike.
Another fine job!!! I really like how you didn't even use a tape to measure you lumber or cuts!. A true craftsman. Only thing I would do different, I would have put a 15 degree cut on the 2x that is attached at the tree, just a minor thing, looks real good Mike!!

Alright Mike, got an idea for the bridge or two.
First one, make some concrete beams or steel beams across there, then make the deck out of some sheets of diamond plate that is plasma cut to look like hundreds of pairs of feet.
OR, make one giant deck that looks like one giant foot. It's is a foot bridge, not a feet bridge.
OR, logger wade or anybody local still have some cypress laying around for sale? Laminated arch bridge sure does look pretty.
OR, stacked stone arch like the Roman's built; they lasted a few years, right?

With all the stone on your property, free material, you should maybe build a 'Stone Arch Bridge', dry stack or masonary, I've seen some amazing diy design projects on youtube.
Bridge idea: Those aluminum ramps that lead down to floating boat docks. Or the dock itself. Around me, they go up on Marketplace frequently.

what a coincidence everytime the fire desperately needed tending it was right after you finished driving a post ;) hehe As far as suggestions go for the bridge here are some ideas: limestone like the other one, an old boat hull to match the theme, some kind of suspension bridge, or maybe repurpose old railway stuff if you can get a hold of it ....

As someone else mentioned, make it a covered bridge. As you were framing the rail I thought it would be a cool attraction and also help protect it from rot.
The bridge we use to cross our creek originally was telephone poles with railroad ties spiked on top of it and now it’s a half cut of a swamp mat for pipeline construction.

I like it. One might consider picking up a couple used steel I or H beams and figure out a way to slide them in on the inside of the two wood beams and leave the wood beams to keep it that wood bridge look, just a thought. Making great use of your time and great progress, enjoyed watching, appreciate your videos.
Growing up on 5 acres, my Dad ended up cutting down a couple trees that he debarked and put in the ground for a badminton net LOL. Another time he cut down a tree to get the top for a Christmas tree.

Awesome job Captain!! As far as a replacement bridge, I think a suspension bridge similar to the ones that the CCC built in a few of the state parks. Those are close to 100 years old and many of them are still in use today. It would be a perfect match to the stone bridge and plunge pond.
