Hydroponic Zinnia Flowers

  • Zinnia flowers were grown with a hydroponic method that doesn't require electricity or mechanical aeration similar to a method for growing hydroponic lettuce.
    One of the highlights of this video is the viewing of the massive root system which developed in the moist air space between the nutrient solution level and the cover of the growing container.

    Have you tried trimming off the air roots to see if they do anything? I think they just subsist in the humid zone doing nothing. I was too lazy to test it this summer though.

      Hi Jeb, No, I didn't try that because I only had the one container and was enjoying looking at the flowers and didn't want to risk hurting the plants. It was science/curiosity vs. enjoyment and the latter prevailed!

    I heard that garden flowers can attract pollinators that wil help keep the population of insect pests under control. Wonder if there any research on that with hydroponics.

    Very colorful and nice display of zinnia flowers, I was happy to see you making more videos. This year I was able to hide a container in the landscape plantings, in which I grew flowers using non-circulating hydroponics. It was a perfect way to get out of watering chores that is common with typical potted plants. Maybe you can supplement your greenhouse vegetables with containers of flowers? It would be a colorful greenhouse!

      Thanks, Matt. I think more people will follow your lead and grow flowers by non-circulating hydroponics. I plan to release some more videos this fall and will even experiment with several very short preview type videos and will look forward to your reaction about the concept.

    The weeds were actually pretty. And they really did look good with the zinnias. They were probably taking up too much water though huh?

    I love Dr.Kratky! Most underrated channel on youtube. Are you taking grad students? probably not, if you are emeritus :( Please make more videos, the world is going to need all of your unpublished knowledge in addition to all of your published knowledge. Really the videos are more accessible to the non-college educated anyway. New idea: can you make videos on the topics of all the papers you have published, papers you never got around to publishing and seminar/conference presentations? Can we get a nobel prize for the father of resource efficient, universally accessible, non-electrical, unpatented almost free hydroponic gardening? I know i'm asking a lot from a retired professor who still keeps active professionally but a successful UA-cam channel could fund a small team of grad students to make the videos for you :) I'm so inspired, everyone is getting a kratky inspired, reused plastic, home-made grow system for their birthday this year!!!!!

    Where can I read more about maintaining nutrient/water volumes. I live in Western Washington state and would like to try growing Zinnias like this. What I don't understand is that when it rains here it seems like the nutrients would drain out the drain hole and be lost. How can I learn more about this method.

    How much extra water + nutrients did you end up adding?

    • @growkratky5558
      @growkratky5558  4 роки тому +1

      Firstly, I am happy to report that the flowers are still alive and well. During the remaining warm weather of Aug, I usually added 2-3 quarts of water per day, but lowered that to about 1 to 2 quarts per day starting about 10 days ago due to cooler weather and smoky air conditions.The correct approach to adding more nutrients is add nutrient solution instead of water when the EC becomes lower than 1.5mS, but my actual approach was a little more complicated.
