Kratky-Fornof Double Action Container Seedling Transplanter
Переглядів 1,2 тис.Місяць тому
A hand held transplanter for container seedlings is described. The device transplants and makes a hole in the soil for the next plant with a simple downward movement of the transplanter. The transplanter was granted U.S. Patent 4,736,694 in 1988. The patent has expired and may be freely used. Here is a link to the patent - patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/c5/1d/ab/b30b9917963676/US4736694.pdf
Dipstick Float Valves for Watering Plants - Part II
Переглядів 4,2 тис.Рік тому
Dipstick float valves would be a convenient way to automatically add nutrient solution to long term crops. Dipstick float valves could maintain a constant level of nutrient solution in a hydroponic tank and could be installed after 40 to 50 percent of the initial nutrient solution remained in the tank. Float blocks could be crafted from extruded polystyrene and these would provide the buoyancy ...
Dipstick Float Valves for Watering Plants - Part I

The concept of using dipstick float valves to control the solution level in hydroponic tanks is discussed. Materials used to make these float valves are also discussed. Three dipstick float valve models were introduced and tested. When growth of the plant causes the nutrient solution in a non-circulating hydroponic tank to drop to around half of the original level, a dipstick float valve could ...

However, as time progressed to 25 days after planting, the seedlings under the pole lamp became more etiolated and weak, whereas those on the ...
Dealing with Slugs on Hydroponic Crops

Slugs are attracted to leafy crops. In addition to searching for slugs on the foliage, hydroponic growers may also lift the tank cover and search for slugs hiding under the cover and in or on the net pots. Growers should ask their local health department if there have been documented cases of rat lungworm disease caused by accidentally ingesting a slug when eating uncooked produce. Rat lungworm...

Dr. Kratky, greetings from Brazil. Here, specifically for mangos, a picker was developed using a metal rim with a V shaped blade fixed to it by a screw, on the opposite side of the pole, used to cut the peduncle. The bag has velcro on the edges so it can easily be removed to transport the harvest. I wish I could show you a picture... Hope it gives you some ideas!

Begging your pardon but the roll out tanks always seem to have lumber or cement blocks along the sides, even though they are clipped to the inside flats. I think accepting solid sides as necessary is probably for the best

You are correct, but I would like to at least aspire to a method without solid sides and that would probably require some sort of internal support.

I have a question Dr Kratky about the impact of varying level of water head on the float valve's ability to maintain the level. Let's say at the start, the supply tank was completely full giving 20" of water head as measured from the bottom of the grow tank and the valve maintained a level of 4" of nutrient in the grow tank. After some time, the supply tank become half empty giving 15" of water head now. Will the float valve still maintain 4" of nutrient in the grow tank in the face of decreased buoyancy pressure requirement to stop the flow from the button dripper ?

    • @growkratky5558
      @growkratky5558 Місяць тому

Good question! The full tank results in somewhat more water pressure than a half tank and causes the water to rise higher. For example, when a graduated centrifuge tube is the float mechanism, a full tank might cause the tube to exert 10 cc's to counteract the pressure, whereas the half tank might only require 8 cc of buoyancy and so the water level would rise higher for the 10 cc buoyancy than the 8 cc buoyancy. Water height wouldn't be affected much by a large area float such as in the yogurt container float valve, but would be more pronounced in a float mechanism with a small area.

Can you direct me to any research on the air root requirements for various plants? The statement “don’t refill more than a few centimeters” doesn’t match my experience with passive hydroponics. “Leave 1/3 of the root system above the air line” works for me, but goes against all of the advice I can find

When looking at the space needed it's probably also important to remember that the people who would grow in bags in a greehouse also probably wouldn't be growing in a field as an alternative but rather in raised beds or grow bags in that same greenhouse requiring the same aisle space.

Doc You mentioned you didn't know why the roots grow up the stem. I think I can help you there. That's so when they're in the river. and say a storm comes. and parts of the plant will break loose. So if they've got roots up the stem, they can then flow downstream, get anchored somewhere further on downstream and carry on growing. That's the way I grow my own watercress in an ebb and flow system. I just break bits off and replace them into another container. So I never really apart from the first time grow them from seeds. And in the past. I've actually bought watercress from the shop. and just submerge that and it throws roots.

Curious why the outermost pot needs to be any larger / taller than the 5 cm depth of solution that it carries. I would put pot in pot in a big tub and use that as outermost pot for multiple of pot in pots. The outermost post is a saving in this arrangement. This also makes it possible to have pot in pot technique to become pot in grow bag if a grow bag is used. The use of grow bag will be more tolerant to pot bursting.

Unless if I missed it in this video or the previous part 1, couldn’t this be made to be height variable by drilling a series of holes up the pipe? That way you could pass the wire through and secure it at whatever height hole for your application. This would allow for any heigh within 2” to 24+”. It would require more pipe than necessary on the low end but would make up for that in versatility in my opinion.

When following these designs learn from my mistakes! Don’t use widely available schedule 40 PVC as 15 mL centrifuge tubes do not fit. I believe schedule 30 by was used in the video which may be a bit harder to find. 1 inch PEXb could serve as a substitute if there is concern for PVC safety, but you sacrifice some rigidity and cost. You could use external crimping or clamping to fix the dripper in place with PEX. 0.5 gph pressure compensating emitters specifications vary by brand, but need higher pressure to function. At an approximate 2 foot pressure differential mine did not flow at all. Still learning as I go!
