I'm telling you that expensive one at the end had yellow tones in the hair still and not even it was splotches of yellow. Maybe he couldn't tell in person but you could definitely see on camera where it had spots of yellowing. It was my least favorite to be honest. I'm a stylist btw. Id recommend the Paul Mitchell out of these but my go to is matrix total results so silver for salon brand and for drug store I actually found a kinda new one that is nice if you want to be blonde not silver. It not only works well but makes your hair soft shiny and smells so good and the best part it's under $7! L'oreal paris everpure brass toning.
Also how can we make sure that these were not interchanged? 🤷🏼♀️ started doubting his tests after being caught. This test also had no evidence that all stayed on the hair at the same time

I wish brad had shown all 5 swatches next to eachother in good lighting for us to really compare. Different people want different results so the gentlest purple might not be what someone is looking for, but even-ness will always be important
You can make your own purple shampoo by mixing small pea size amounts of manic panic ultra violet semi permanent hair color with conditioner of choice (recommend white or clear). Since you are diluting the dye, it lasts forever and it works better than most purple shampoo, especially if you have tons of yellow coming through! I was platinum blonde for a decade lol! You can make it as strong or weak as you want. I always mixed it to a nice light to medium lavender color.

Careful with the Joico Blonde Life Violet! I like their regular purple shampoo but the Blonde Life wrecked my scalp sadly. Did a fantastic job toning but that trade off wasn't worth it.

Wow I have bleached curly hair and noticed that after using shimmer lights for a while, my curly hair was just really frizzy and did not feel soft or nice at all. I didn’t realize that it was the shimmer lights that was making my hair feel and look so frizzy, dry and gross and I spent so much money on curly hair products to try and save my curls 😭 this video has been so helpful, thanks Brad!
I had the same problem! I've got very fine mostly straight hair and it made it feel dry and crunchy with a side of weighed down but worst of all, it didn't work.

If your hair isn’t already extremely light blonde, it won’t go silver or white. If your hair has too much yellow, you need purple shampoo, but if it’s brassy as in orange, you need blue.
I use fanola no orange when it’s a little brassy orange. It’s a blue shampoo. A few uses and it’s way better. After that I usually use fanola no yellow. Best I’ve ever used.
redken brownlights is my FAVORITE for dark hair with highlights!! it’s a teal color so it really helps to get rid of any orange/red tones left in the hair!! i use it on all of my dark highlight girls at my salon!!!
The Ion (Blonde) purple shampoo is an awesome mid-price ranged product! I’ve used it for years and it always does the trick, leaves my hair soft and works super well!

@@hannio5972 so toners aren't permanent and they do fade/wash out over time you'll still need the purple shampoo to help upkeep the tone. If you're blonde I usually recommend toners for my clients (I'm a hairdresser too) depending on what tone they want (ashy, beige, neutral, warm etc) . They don't damage your hair either because theyre just semi permanent in fact most add some shine to the hair so definitely something I'd suggest to look into. They're not overly pricey at salons in NZ but I can't speak for other countries :)

I’ve been using the john freida shampoo 3 times a week for two months and my hair has gone from a bleached dark yellow to iced white blonde, I love it along with the conditioner and it fits in with my budget. There isn’t no way on this planet I’d pay $46 for shampoo I’d rather go bald first 🤣
Have you tried loreals purple shampoo? I stopped using JF once I tried it. Worked better for me and made my hair feel much healthier than JF! It’s like a dollar or two more but sooo worth it IMO
@@amelliasindle3456 for about a week every day I applied it to my hair dry for 5 minutes then rinsed and conditioned, then just 3 times a week leaving it for 2 minutes. I did get a purple tinge to my hair but it was loads better that the yellow 🤣 x
Thanks Brad! This was incredibly helpful. I'm a former brunette who is completely gray now, and I use Shimmer Lights. It smells like Tabu (1932) from Dana (it's nice in very small doses), so it is a great-great grandma scent! That said, the scent in the shampoo is waaaay too powerful. Thanks again for providing some great alternatives for when I finish the Shimmer Lights!
I use the Olaplex No. 4P two or three times a week. It gets rid of all the orange in my balayage, but doesn’t turn it white or silver. It just leaves me with a nice, cool blonde. It’s a little pricey at $28 a bottle, but I’ve tried several different kinds and it’s the only one that gives me the results I want without effecting my hair’s texture.
My favorite one will forever be Kerastase Blond Absolu Ultra-Violet shampoo. The smell, the toning, everything about it is perfect. The Hyaluronic Acid and the Edelweiss Flower are just the holy grail of this shampoo.
May I ask how long you leave it on for? I only use Kerastase products and received a sample but prob didn’t leave it on long enough. The purple color is so dark I was scared it would tone too much so I rinsed almost immediately. I find some purple shampoos tone too much then I look dull instead of bright and I try to keep my hair as bright as possible without being brassy. Does it make your blonde bright? Also I got the circa blond Absolu circa mask since my hair has some damage. Have you tried that and if so do you like it? I don’t know anyone else that uses these products so glad to see you do and wonder if you think worth the price point. Trying to keep my blonde healthy as possible so always use high end products. Just used my XMONDO supernova (blonde toning shampoo) last night and it blew every past purple shampoo I’ve used out of the water! I’ve had lovely ashy highlights/lowlights for years but being away from the salon because of Covid is showing ....but this shampoo really delivered . Thank you!

Fellow hairstylist here 👋 if you want that super ashy/icy blonde, Matrix Brass Off is the shizz... if you want that ashy/silver tone you need a blue/purple based toning shampoo. We can’t keep it on the shelves at the shop, also doesn’t dry your hair out like drugstore toning shampoos... affordable for professional product as well is a plus... just needed to throw that out there... ❤️❤️ Fanola no yellow is good too if you just want that platinum ice blonde. Also- I tell all my clients not to buy Shimmer Lights. It dries the hair out SO bad.
Thanks for doing this strand test. I have 7NA color hair and want to go platinum blonde. I’m tired of using a toning shampoo and have it come out silver white blue blotches and still have brassy roots. So yes I am going to try the orange bottle….. who cares if the bottle is orange 🤷♀️

I'm 50/50 silver/white. I've been using Shimmer Lights for years now and I guess it shows how old I am that I actually LIKE the scent. LOL I appreciate the time put into this, but my hair gets yellow fast and I need that extra toning. ❤️

How perfect was this since I just bleached my 5 month old roots at home. Following your advice it came out AMAZING, but definitely needs to be toned 😉 thank goodness I ordered finnola ahead of time and I got both the blue and purple shampoos just in case! I've found that the medicinal, astringent scent of Shimmer Lights to be short-lasting. It also gives my short, thin, fine, natural salt and pepper hair much desired texture by drying it out.
I always use the Fanola one, it's the only purple shampoo that works for me and it doesn't make my hair dry. It also smells so good ❤ I've tried the Paul Mitchell one and the John Frieda one and they did absolutely nothing for me, so I think they only look good because they're used on extensions

i did this too with crazy color dye! my hair got a green glow so i mixed a bit of pink dye along with purple and it always worked like a charm

If your hair isn’t already extremely light blonde, it won’t go silver or white. If your hair has too much yellow, you need purple shampoo, but if it’s brassy as in orange, you need blue.
I use fanola no orange when it’s a little brassy orange. It’s a blue shampoo. A few uses and it’s way better. After that I usually use fanola no yellow. Best I’ve ever used.
Now please do this for BLUE shampoos for brunettes!

One of the best ones on the market but super strong and can dry your hair out a bit so recommend using really good conditioner after it!

@@hannio5972 so toners aren't permanent and they do fade/wash out over time you'll still need the purple shampoo to help upkeep the tone. If you're blonde I usually recommend toners for my clients (I'm a hairdresser too) depending on what tone they want (ashy, beige, neutral, warm etc) . They don't damage your hair either because theyre just semi permanent in fact most add some shine to the hair so definitely something I'd suggest to look into. They're not overly pricey at salons in NZ but I can't speak for other countries :)

I’ve been using the john freida shampoo 3 times a week for two months and my hair has gone from a bleached dark yellow to iced white blonde, I love it along with the conditioner and it fits in with my budget. There isn’t no way on this planet I’d pay $46 for shampoo I’d rather go bald first 🤣
Have you tried loreals purple shampoo? I stopped using JF once I tried it. Worked better for me and made my hair feel much healthier than JF! It’s like a dollar or two more but sooo worth it IMO

@@amelliasindle3456 for about a week every day I applied it to my hair dry for 5 minutes then rinsed and conditioned, then just 3 times a week leaving it for 2 minutes. I did get a purple tinge to my hair but it was loads better that the yellow 🤣 x

Thanks Brad! This was incredibly helpful. I'm a former brunette who is completely gray now, and I use Shimmer Lights. It smells like Tabu (1932) from Dana (it's nice in very small doses), so it is a great-great grandma scent! That said, the scent in the shampoo is waaaay too powerful. Thanks again for providing some great alternatives for when I finish the Shimmer Lights!

I use the Olaplex No. 4P two or three times a week. It gets rid of all the orange in my balayage, but doesn’t turn it white or silver. It just leaves me with a nice, cool blonde. It’s a little pricey at $28 a bottle, but I’ve tried several different kinds and it’s the only one that gives me the results I want without effecting my hair’s texture.

My favorite one will forever be Kerastase Blond Absolu Ultra-Violet shampoo. The smell, the toning, everything about it is perfect. The Hyaluronic Acid and the Edelweiss Flower are just the holy grail of this shampoo.
May I ask how long you leave it on for? I only use Kerastase products and received a sample but prob didn’t leave it on long enough. The purple color is so dark I was scared it would tone too much so I rinsed almost immediately. I find some purple shampoos tone too much then I look dull instead of bright and I try to keep my hair as bright as possible without being brassy. Does it make your blonde bright? Also I got the circa blond Absolu circa mask since my hair has some damage. Have you tried that and if so do you like it? I don’t know anyone else that uses these products so glad to see you do and wonder if you think worth the price point. Trying to keep my blonde healthy as possible so always use high end products. Thank you!

Fellow hairstylist here 👋 if you want that super ashy/icy blonde, Matrix Brass Off is the shizz... if you want that ashy/silver tone you need a blue/purple based toning shampoo. We can’t keep it on the shelves at the shop, also doesn’t dry your hair out like drugstore toning shampoos... affordable for professional product as well is a plus... just needed to throw that out there... ❤️❤️ Fanola no yellow is good too if you just want that platinum ice blonde. Also- I tell all my clients not to buy Shimmer Lights. It dries the hair out SO bad.

I'm 50/50 silver/white. I've been using Shimmer Lights for years now and I guess it shows how old I am that I actually LIKE the scent. LOL I appreciate the time put into this, but my hair gets yellow fast and I need that extra toning. ❤️

How perfect was this since I just bleached my 5 month old roots at home. I've found that the medicinal, astringent scent of Shimmer Lights to be short-lasting. It also gives my short, thin, fine, natural salt and pepper hair much desired texture by drying it out.
I always use the Fanola one, it's the only purple shampoo that works for me and it doesn't make my hair dry. It also smells so good ❤ I've tried the Paul Mitchell one and the John Frieda one and they did absolutely nothing for me, so I think they only look good because they're used on extensions
