      @My Disappointed boner Because at one point in time the media tried to link Counter strike to School shootings(At least in germany). So some people might think "He's planning a mass shooting." While in reality, people do it because it is a place you are familar with that is big and intricate. So schools were probably many peoples first map as it is a learning experience..

    • @amoliski
      @amoliski 7 років тому +46

      I thought he was purposefully going a bit overboard with the product placement/details to be funny. I doubt they said in the contract "Make sure that if you leave the computer, you mention that you had to tear yourself away and reassure the audience that you would be back shortly"
      Plus, he made an interesting and useful video that just happened to have little side comments about the computer. I'm glad he didn't spend forever showing benchmarks or talking about the components. If you care about that, I'm sure there's plenty of places to see it. All he has to do is let you know the thing exists and to pique your interest.

    • @HulkBogan

      Novazon even if sarcastically... I thank you for your positive reply... People who took this comment on a positive note have understood what I've said... unlike other people who support gambling sites, our 3 channel owner Philip partnered with a PC manufacturer which is great! So yeah it's just a matter of perception!

    Honestly, shiny objects/textures should be used very sparsely. They can take a lot of focus away from what is important, and also look ugly as shit if overused. So I guess what I want you to take away from this, is...
    If shine... just a little bit.

  • @ruijikisu

    A nice video, but it doesnt really have much to do with source in particular does it?
    It's not like Reflection Shaders aren't a thing in source as you showed, and it's not like they are new either, both the baked and real time ones (in fact I recently made them in DirectX 11 recently).
    I think the reason they aren't used as obviously, is that they were horribly overused a couple of years ago, when computers were finally powerful enough for them.
    Everything was shiny, and it was bloody annoying (to me at least).
    Now the use is more nuanced, to a point were were almost used to them, cause they blend in with the environment, yet making it a bit more realistic.
    In CSGOs case its probably used less to keep similar visuals on low and high spec PCs.
    And other than CS...well, there haven't really been many source games have there? (Angrily looking at Valve)
    And the last big one Titanfall (2) looked amazing, so it's more of a "Make CSGO beautiful again" isn't it :P

    • @nimrodery
      @nimrodery 7 років тому +2

      Half Life 2 is 13 years old though. Computers have only been powerful enough for shiny surfaces for "a couple of years?" So, 11 years of imagining shiny surfaces?

    • @ruijikisu
      @ruijikisu 6 років тому +1

      True, its was ahead of its time, but the title of the video implies that this is about making source beautiful again, but source never stopped having these reflections, only the source games did. Meaning the creators intentionally chose not to use them as much, its really not an engine limitation.

  • @BlitzvogelMobius
    @BlitzvogelMobius 7 років тому +4

    It's important to remember that many early DX9, and late OG Xbox games had a problem with looking too plastic and shiny, probably as much to do with memory limitations as much to do with less powerful pixel shading and multitexturing hardware that couldn't handle extra material layers in combination with the base texture, bump and normal layers.
    HL2 took a good balance between what was worth visually emphasizing in the bump and normal map layers while avoiding the shiny visual pitfalls of games like Doom 3 and perhaps FEAR that seemed to make shit shiny because they could. Not to mention HL2 ran excellently on mediocre hardware of long ago, no doubt in part to asking "why add these extra layers and make it shiney when 1) it doesn't add to the visual realism & 2) it's incurring a big performance cost?"
