Hii really it's a helpful stretch. I am from India. We call this stretch mandookaasana ( Mandooka in Sanskrit language means frog and aasana means sitting) It also relieves menstrual pain and strengthens pelvic and buttoc muscles. Keep posting more such helpful videos. Thanks 😃

Exercise and stretching is the cure for everything...I have hip dysplasia with my knees being affected too ..I started getting a lot more active even running and I have no pain and am stronger than ever!! Forget rest and pain pills ..just exercise...move your body 🙌🏼

Thanks for the reminder. I dreaded this pose in yoga class, because it was so uncomfortable for me. However, I found that placing a block under my chest helped me progressively relax into the position better. Also, the best way to get out was to shift my body forward, instead of causing more injury by trying to vertically come back up.

Was so impressed with your integrity. Very appreciative!

My hip just started hurting 1 day ago and the first thought that came across my mind is this must be why people get a hip replacement. I am 67 and glad I refused to get knee replacement because with proper care my knees work fine. Prayer must have led me to your channel and I am truly grateful. I was going to call my doctor for treatment but wisdom said just start with therapy and I was led to you. Thank you so much I will try this NOW.

Finally, a thorough explanation of how to do the Frog stretch. I had been doing this as part of a yoga routine but I wasn't getting a real stretch in the muscles that needed it, as became apparent recently when I sustained a stress fracture in my femur from overuse (during much more strenuous exercise than yoga) and actually ended up breaking the bone all the way while I was doing normal errands, because I didn't know what was wrong with it until it was too late. So now that I've had surgery to put my hip back together and have been told to use a walker, then a cane, and lay or sit around, I realize that you are quite correct in saying that practically no one tells you about this stretch, because I never heard it mentioned. Anyway, now that is has been 2 months I am getting some mobility back, although I am not as flexible as I was, but it does feel good to learn how to work on that properly.

I did a yoga for hips but I just didn't feel quite like I was loose and stretched out. I came across this video! I have done this before (a Long time ago) but your education was so much better then the other one. I did it as you explained and man I feel soooo much better. I will also incorporate it in my stretching routines!

Finally someone who talks about mobility in neuromuscular terms rather than just referring to "tightness". I find it is one of the least understood (yet most important) fitness concepts to the average Joe and I am often shocked to see some of the techniques recommended by instructors in disciplines that demand flexibility (dance, gymnastics, martial arts etc.). You explain your techniques in a simple way that can help people grasp what is causing tightness and what actually makes certain stretches effective verses others. Keep up the great content!

Thank you for the helpful advice. I do wish you had talked about the necessity of deep steady breathing to activate healing and given your description of "relaxed" because many ppl are starting from zero and don't know what relaxed means . I recommend cultivating a quiet mind during stretching where you are not actively thinking about what you need to do next, what you saw on TV, how you want your body to be, etc. Just unbiased awareness of sensations in the body. I agree with what you said about not going into maximum stretch you are capable of but backing off to less than that, so the position can be held longer, in manageable challenge. Also if you are not stretched to maximum, you might be able to bring yourself to feel an inward smile, not forced fake outward smile, which stimulates greater healing. You didn't mention the connection between mind body and spirit in regard to triggering healing as opposed to narrowly focusing on what you want your body to do. Using a stretch pose to release AND tense muscles to get a FUNCTIONAL increase in range if motion and not just an increase in range of motion is a new idea to me. Thanks for that!!!

Good video. This is the first of Matt's that I've seen, but will definitely be checking out more. As an avid runner in mid-to-late 50's one of the things I've been concerned about for years is hip strength, flexibility and balance, and go overboard with exercises and stretches for the hips. Imbalance in hip strength or flexibility seems to lead to injuries. I plan on exploring these hip stretches and sharing with fellow runners.

I have been having mobility problems with one hip, and pain on and off. I have now developed sciatic pain gong from side of lower back through my buttock to my knee. My doctor sees this simply as arthritis in spine and hip, and has suggested keep moving, take Ibuprufen and later have a hip replacement. I am a firm believer in the body wanting to heal itself but needing support or change in life style. Just did this exercise and got a lot of relief from it. I will do this regularly now. Thank you.

Am I the only one that had trouble getting into these positions because of knee pain? And I'm only 22 😬. I can get into the butterfly stretch and the yoga hip stretch though so I think a can achieve the same results. I have knocked knees and flat feet with a partial outward patella shift on my left leg, with VERY weak hips. So I believe that's why it's so painful for me to get on my knees, that's why I'm trying to do these stretches to strengthen my lower body.

hip bursitis a few years ago, took almost a year to recover the ability to sit. i was clearing land the other day, taking out desert broom which has sprawling, radiating canes, dead ones brittle enough to snap out. so this cane/branch is sticking 45 degrees out of the ground, i try to bend it upwards with the outer side of my foot, opening my hip up. lots of resistance, imagine lifting a 25 lb. bucket on the side of your foot. but wow, it felt like that was about the best thing i've done. you're right, my hip injury only improves with exercise, horse position, squats, whatever you can convince yourself to do. gotta move it.

I'm a PT and I prefer teaching a modified version first, "the butterfly" lying supine. I feel the frog is a more advanced stretch. Most of my clients do not have the overall flexibility or control of the lumbar spine to safely and correctly perform this stretch initially.

Yes it is. What if you have a super stiff right hip due to some arthritis?

To me, this is much more helpful than the butterfly

Yes I was wondering if there is a modified version for those of us with spinal arthritis. I would be in alot of pain trying this

What if you have lumbar spine stenosis which needs special exercises? This I have a L hip which gives pain relieved by exercise????😊

I knew it. I was thinking about doing this. You're body will tell you what it needs. Glad I came across this video. Confirms what I needed to do.
