English Bar Stock Engine Teardown, This didn't go as expected! Part 1

- I dig into what I thought would be a straight forward repair on this one off bar stock engine only to find other issues. This engine has been named "The Mystery Machine" due to it's build design and assembly. It needs more attention than expected, or I need to lower my standards. Let's dig deeper and fix this one.
I've never has good luck buying privately made model engines from auction, with the notable exception of the German flammenfresser with the graphite piston & valves. The cylinder end bolts being mis-spaced was the same on a steam engine I bought once. It would drive me nuts. So I wish you the best, have total faith in you:)
It's been kind of exciting to see how it was built and to try to understand why was it done like that, but it give the next person (me) something to think about while doing something that isn't normally done to rectify a different issue. It has been a fun project so far but it's not done yet so I guess anything can happen. It's always great to read a comment from you Mr. Thomas 👍
given the issues you're having my guess is that the bolts on the cylinder are long headbolts all the way through the cylinder and into the crosshead guide bars. Since you found sealant on one end, the other end is probably sealed with goo instead of a gasket as well, so it is not free to slip the whole cylinder & valve box off the long bolts. It is interesting there is a brass cylinder liner in there. I wonder what kind of rings you will find when you get the piston out.

I bet those square braces coming off the rear of the cylinder, unscrew from the cylinder. But you have to separate the back end of the engine first. :-( o.O
