+Square Eyed Jak It's funny because of the huge praise from many who play the game. Especially, with people who grew up on the N64. I guess, its another victim of loved due to nostalgia.
Apparently, Rare actually wanted to call the game Donkey Kong World at first but for some reason, went with the trend of putting "64" at the end of the game's title like a lot of games for the system did.
Gotta give you credit for expressing your true opinion, especially for a beloved Nintendo 64 game that's also developed by Rare. Seeing how a lot of other youtubers would have kissed it's ass or not done it at all. I hope you get that 5k soon mate you deserve it.
I agree with some points in this review, but the criticism towards lack of voice acting, as well as the comparison to Conker's Bad Fur Day, is leaving out one very important detail; Conker's Bad Fur Day was released in 2001, and had *64 MB* of additional data, whereas Donkey Kong 64 was released in 1999, and its expansion pak only provided the game *4 MB* of additional space. That's why Conker could do full voice overs and cutscenes, and Donkey Kong could not. Well, then again there was Rugrats: Scavenger Hunt, which didn't even need an expansion pak and still had full voiceovers.
Please note: Any harm and/or severe damage to childhoods are in fact, not fault of Square Eyed Jak inc. or any related parties. Please consult your game doctor.
The main difference between this game and other N64 3D platformers like Banko Kazooie and Super Mario 64 is that those games are fast faced, utilized vibrant colors to make environments clear and visible, and it doesn't drag on with pointless collectables that pad out the length if the game.
Because nostalgia comes from memories. And we humans tend to remember the good parts about something more then the bad. So you end up liking a game more when you played it in your childhood, then someone who just played it not so long ago. That's just how it is. I loved the game when i was a child, but even I gotta admit that he is completely right about nearly everything he complained about. Also children get impressed by nearly everything, so saying that you loved the game as a child while doing a review is just wrong.
You also gotta consider that some games don't age as well as others. Though sure enough, if a game can't be fun just because some times has past it's still a shit game.
Oh, I don't know. Some of the games that N64 fans hold in high regard deserve the attention. For example, I didn't grow up with a N64 and I didn't get one till about 2002. I finally got my hands on Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time around 2013 and even though the game play may feel a little outdated, I genuinely had a good experience with it. But I understand what you mean. For example, I love the first Spyro the Dragon game. Playing it always gives me memories of my childhood in the 90s. But even I had to realize the game didn't hold up and the sequels were better but yet, I still really love the first game lol.
There are some decent games on the N64 most of which have been ported elsewhere and tend to be 20 X better on something like the 3ds, most n64 reviews tend to overlook some of things Jak mentioned which when considering how expensive n64 games can get can be a real problem.

The second stick on the Dual Shock is a leftover from the Dual Analog. Great review dude! Yeah as much as I love Donkey Kong and the like, I honestly think 64 was WAY too complex for its own good and felt more like a poor man's Banjo Kazooie than a proper Donkey Kong Country-like experience. It is a damn shame too, because I had heard all the praise about it a few years ago, and it then came on the Virtual Console, giving me a chance to finally experience. It became clear that it doesn't hold up all that well anymore.

@@MysteryMouseketool It was, one of the poorest controllers I've ever used, I love N64 but the controller is definitely not one of its strong suits, plus the analogue stick on so many of my N64 controllers has stopped working correctly.
You sir, have trash-talked one of my favorite games of all time... and I love it! I don't think this game is bad, but you do make valid points. The levels do get samey and I don't like playing as Tiny most of the time, but the music and the gameplay makes it so much fun. While this game hasn't aged well (There are tons of glitches that allow you to get Golden Bananas early), I can still say that, as someone who played the original N64 version and the re-release on Wii U VC, I still think this game holds up in it's fun gameplay and soundtrack. Great review BTW.
People need to learn to take criticism sometimes. I'm surprised you didn't bring up Beaver Bother, or any of the other frustrating Bananas in the game. You could've elaborated on what your favorite level or music track was, but that's expecting to much from a (mostly) negative review. Honestly, if it was possible, I'd like another DK64. For one, this is Donkey Kong's only 3D outing (Returns and Tropical Freeze retread the SNES games), and I kind of liked playing as Lanky and Chunky, with the latter having no big appearances as of late. Still, it's a good game nonetheless.
12:47 I think you're meant to see what order the barrels light up which is in a circle rotating anticlockwise or clockwise and predict which one will light up next. When I played that part, that is what I did and after I figured that out, it was fine
Although Rareware made the critically acclaimed Banjo-Kazooie, this one kinda fell short by making a sequel and making it bigger, and BIGGER, AND BIGGER! This resulted in a lack of polish from what we usually see from Rareware. Collectathons are already kinda slow-paced, they really didn't need to add more stuff to make it even slower to the point of barely any fun. I do like the variety of things such as the characters, bonus stages, and etc although i don't think they were executed properly. I wouldn't say it's a bad game, but an OK game.
It's good to hear the opinion of someone who didn't grow up with Nintendo and therefore doesn't have the nostalgia bias that so many other reviewers have.
I got this on the Wii U Virtual Console, it was ok until I kept getting lost in the cave level with lots of water and debris falling from the ceiling. I stopped playing and haven't touched it ever since. Also had a hard time at the start of the game trying to figure out how to throw grenades since the game tells you to press a button that the Wii U doesn't have, had to look up a walkthrough for a tutorial lol.
Okay, so the reason why the N64 joysticks have issues is because they were made using a simple mechanism which involves plastic running against plastic, which causes the stick to degrade. However, the N64 controllers worked fine at the time and Nintendo never assumed that anyone would be playing N64 games 22 years after the console was released and knowing that the analogue sticks would work fine throughout the console’s lifespan, and therefore released it with it’s simple mechanism.
I got an N64 last week, got Wave Race a Banjo Kazooie and also picked up a game called "Iggy's Reckin' Balls". It may be worth a look, its a very quirky racer.
Man people don't like their child hood being trash talked because everything in your child hood is inherently good and cannot be critiqued to ANY extent, I positively loved this game as a kid but that doesn't mean I can't take one of my favorite childhood memories being picked apart, Though honestly you're not really getting harsh backlash though, I'm just talking in general when someone picks apart something others love and they get so upset cause its an opinion they can't take, Great video, A completely non-nostalgia-biased review of this game It has flaws that should be acknowledged Subscribed.
***** Just gonna say that sounds like an opinion I never can get why Nintendo doesn't make the games people want, Maybe the demand just isn't big enough in Japan I'm also sure you've heard of Yooka-Laylee I'll assume? Also heard Microsoft plans on doing something with the IP's they've had stashed away... but I guess that doesn't include DK. Eh I dunno Nintendo is a mystery :l
***** Its gonna be for PC, Wii U and a Sony/Microsoft console Not entirely sure on their exact plan for that, Probably gonna change that either way but it is for sure coming to PC Yooka Laylee is being made by old Rare not the ones at Microsoft, the old Rare members company name is Playtonic Games So getting something to play Yooka Laylee isn't going to be hard
despite the helpful banana pads they're still a chore to get to areas that don't even have the pads at all. they play a big part to being just shortcuts and not much of a circumstance to helping the backtracking.
I've never played this game and thanks to this video I don't think I ever will. Old Nintendo games always get away for being bad due to nostalgia but it's good to see someone not be brainwashed by nostalgia. Good video man. Have fun with the inevitable comment that'll probably be a death threat for disliking this game. :D
+SHINYLIGHTZ I wouldn't recommend it, thanks. I'll be sure to let them know my personal address, as well as the location of my friends and family's homes.
I just want to point something out that is bugging me and will continue to do so until I point this i credly petty of me thing out. Pauline never "became" Peach. Pauline and Peach are two seperate characters. Don't believe me? Check out the second Mario Vs Donkey Kong game. Pauline reappears in it as her own character.
I loved this game as a kid, but nowadays I have no time for a massive literal collectathon like DK64. I always hated some of the mini games, especially the one where you're a Klaptrap trying to lure a set number of beavers into a central pit
Youre hilarious lmao . That controller used to piss me off when I was playing golden eye n64 haha. Just the look of it and the way you had to hold it to play bothered me alot. Still love it though
That controller is the most putrid, liquefied shit sauce that unloads human waste into your brand new Nintendo console when you turn it on... and then it sprays all over your eyes, with a few chunks into your mouth that is open because you're screaming in terror
@@Skippychops your absolutely correct lmao. I hated the controller but I love the 64 . When you get used to holding the controller and start playing a few games it's not that bad
I remember having this game as a kid. At the time i didn't know that i had to beat the Donkey Kong arcade game twice to progress in the actual game. I always played it for fun but Once i found that out let's just say it tested my patience. I got so mad to the point to where i stopped trying to get it for a good 15 years. It wasn't until yesterday i was like "it's been 15 years. i need to get this damn coin." I sat there for an hour & finally got it. Now I'm stuck on those damn slides.
One aspect about DK64 that has always irked me is the fact that the intro cutscene has fully spoken dialogue, whereas the rest of the game uses text boxes. To add to that, the voice actors are really incoherent at times, what with King K Rool's Darth Vader voice sounding too much like a prolonged growl and everyone else talking as if their tongues are hanging out.
Hi there. I was wondering if you can review the Donkey Kong Country games, especially Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. If you can, that would be great.
Actually, the Crystal coconuts, camera film, and ammo were joint inventory between all the kongs. The music was also joint, but there are so few circumstances you need to use it that it doesn't really matter. Also, why are you ragging on the controller so much? No game requires using more than 2 of the prongs, the C buttons never gave me as much trouble as you claim they gave you (if you couldn't remember which one was which, that's your fault) and I don't know what you did to your controllers but the joysticks never stopped working for me. Sure, they got really loose, but they'd still work, and they generally only got loose if you played Mario Party with them. Also, for King Kut Out, you don't have to wait for the barrel cannons to light up, you could just stand by them waiting for it to pop up in front of the cannon and then quickly jump in. Also, you're supposed to get the Nintendo and Rareware Coins before you enter K Rool's level, it's your fault if you neglected to do so; however, I agree they should be bonuses, not requirements.
+Esteban Menchaca I also noticed he took some inspiration from PatStrikesBack in his Enter the Dragonfly review, but it's not a huge problem though since he still manages to say his own opinions about certain games he review.
+Esteban Menchaca Honestly, his AVGN style. It really brings back the old style of the AVGN episodes. Now days, James rushes through the game or half asses the raunchy humor. If he's gonna make a Nerd review, then he should take his time. At least Square Eyed Jack doesn't completely copy AVGN, try watching GameDude's reviews and you'll see how bad of a reviewer he is
Haha I can fully understand where you're coming from. I just replayed the game for old time sake, but it didn't age that well. I agree with most things you said. They might as well call it DK Hallway!
Well I played 2 levels of Banjo since and then gone back to DK64. it only made my angrier at how this game was handled, however this video is super old and not as balanced as I would have liked looking back.
@@SquareEyedJak Yeah, it's mainly for context purposes. Trust me, it didn't take long for me to realize DK64 was designed to be tedious and nearly impossible to 100%, or even just beat. Banjo-Kazooie (and Tooie in most ways) did collectathons much better, and did a pretty good job of showing what Rare's 3d style was.
I didn't notice the barrels lighting up either, I just followed the pattern of where he was appearing next and beat it that way. This video has so many dislikes but no comments explaining why he is wrong, because it's all true
It is a worse version of Taiko no Tatsujin. It could be a decent game if it had songs tailored to bongos in mind (or musics remade with actual bongos) like Guitar Hero, but these games are filled with random songs and a DK skin.
Donkey Kong 64 is bad but at least it's not Bubsy. The game definitely does get repetitive and monotonous. It's okay in some areas but it can't stand up to other great platformers like Banjo Kazooie, Jak and Daxter, and Spongebob Battle for Bikini Bottom.
You mention rare replay, do you own an xbox one? And ye I hate the n64, so glad i was able to play ocarina of time and majora's mask on 3ds. and other rare games on xbox.
With the whole item collecting problem, can't you just simply collect what you can get with one kong, backtrack to the character select, and then collect what you can with the next kong etc.
That's exactly the problem with the game. In addition, you have to get another kong for certain things in order to do the task with the corresponding kong.
I have a lot of nostalgia for this game, and I still really enjoy it. But really, it isn't very good at all. It's really dated, repetitious and boring. I'm glad that you've shown the problems of this game and how it isn't a very good game at all. Great review Jak!
Despite the negative tone, all of the points you made in the review are good, and it is entertaining to watch. I agree on many of the points, such as the camara control, padding, backtracking, etc. The bland mini-games are something that I think got a little too excessive, especially some of them being really hard due to glitches. But I feel the mini-games could have been used a little bit less and they would be okay, and not making them as hard (re-trying the same mini game for over 20 minutes is not fun). I do find the worlds fun to explore, playing this game nowadays feels fresh because there aren´t this types of games anymore. I wanted to play more games like Mario 64 and banjo kazooie so that is why I got this game. I had only played parts of this when I was a kid, but never owned it myself. So I have a little bit of nostalgia, but not too much(the friend who owned it only got to the third level). I agree that beating the 2 retro games for the nintendo and rareware coins, in order to beat the game is really off-putting. I have been trying to beat Donkey Kong and have easily played over an hour and never get past level 3. These games, while I can aprreciate their designs and the history behind them, make me look at them in a diffrent light when I found out I have to beat them to progress. Thankully, there are gitches to by-pass these games but this should have just been a fun little easter egg.
Man, I forgot how much rage Jak used to have in his videos, even down to strangling himself with controller cords in the intro hahah

This is going to be great.
Man people don't like their child hood being trash talked because everything in your child hood is inherently good and cannot be critiqued to ANY extent, I positively loved this game as a kid but that doesn't mean I can't take one of my favorite childhood memories being picked apart, Though honestly you're not really getting harsh backlash though, I'm just talking in general when someone picks apart something others love and they get so upset cause its an opinion they can't take,
Great video, A completely non-nostalgia-biased review of this game
It has flaws that should be acknowledged

Just a game we can analyze to help designers design better games by learning from past mistakes :]

Just gonna say that sounds like an opinion
I never can get why Nintendo doesn't make the games people want, Maybe the demand just isn't big enough in Japan
I'm also sure you've heard of Yooka-Laylee I'll assume? Also heard Microsoft plans on doing something with the IP's they've had stashed away... but I guess that doesn't include DK.
Eh I dunno
Nintendo is a mystery :l
*****
Its gonna be for PC, Wii U and a Sony/Microsoft console
Not entirely sure on their exact plan for that, Probably gonna change that either way but it is for sure coming to PC
Yooka Laylee is being made by old Rare not the ones at Microsoft, the old Rare members company name is Playtonic Games
So getting something to play Yooka Laylee isn't going to be hard
Warp pads help greatly with backtracking. Why was this not said?
despite the helpful banana pads they're still a chore to get to areas that don't even have the pads at all.
they play a big part to being just shortcuts and not much of a circumstance to helping the backtracking.
While I personally disagree with your conclusion, your production quality never fails to impress and entertain! Great video!!
I loved his game growing up, but I can’t be mad at your takes.
LMAO DUDE THIS IS A THROWBACK I'M STILL LAUGHING HARD
jerimiahisaiah you're not the only one
Love this review! So funny!
+Ryan Sweeney Cheers :D
This isn't funny you guys.
If you do be sure to get some flame resistant suits. Nintendo fanboys are heavily equipped with fire mushrooms.
We desperately need a sequel to DK64...maybe for the Nintendo Switch or the 3DS and call it DK128 (or DK's New Age Adventure).
Yeah I didn't realise that at the time. My bad
I thought the ammo and crystals were shared
so you are done with this game...................
review Ratchet and Clank
I love this game but trying to play this on the Wii U virtual console is a nightmare. The gamepad controls are atrocious.
Yes! Thank GOD I'm not the only one!
this is my new favorite Fucking channel of all time (video game wise)
I played Banjo-Kazooie and i never had issues with the joystick
I loved this game as a kid, but nowadays I have no time for a massive literal collectathon like DK64. I always hated some of the mini games, especially the one where you're a Klaptrap trying to lure a set number of beavers into a central pit
i began playing this on the wii u virtual console in august and i am still in frantic factory
Nostalgia blinded comments are juicy to read :3

Ah, the wonderful smashes/controller breaks! For something so simple I always find them a delight.
The best DK game in the history of all DK games

It's a freaking reskin of Banjo Kazooie. Textures, animations sound effects... just awful

The AVGN influence is strong here... well in your every video m8
At least Square Eyed Jack doesn't completely copy AVGN, try watching GameDude's reviews and you'll see how bad of a reviewer he is
With his preference of the PlayStation, he also kinda reminds me of Caddicarus.
At least AVGN is charming and likable. This guy is just an asshole.
@@evanpeartree how? Just because he doesn’t like ur favourite game? Salty kid
Hay. What game do you LIKE. what is your FAVORITE game that you WOULD PLAY/BEAT more then ONE time
ahhhh old video, very nice. thank you my rock princess.
Haha I can fully understand where you're coming from. I just replayed the game for old time sake, but it didn't age that well. I agree with most things you said. They might as well call it DK Hallway!
Even though you're ripping apart one of my favorite games of all time, you're hilarious so I'm cool with it.
How did you replace the N64 stick with a gamecube one? I need to do this cause mine is loose as fuck!
+cookiezmilk I bought the stick off ebay, look it up. We are on UA-cam you realise? :P It's pretty easy and worth it, trust me
+Square Eyed Jak hi
Square Eyed Jak
Thank mate. The N64 controller stick breaks so easily and pisses me off when I want to play some of their games.
I think you needed to play Banjo-Kazooie first.
Your reviews are awesome keep it up bro
+cyshadowx Thanks
I do love this game but yeah, a unbiased review does point out the glaring flaws.
I didn't notice the barrels lighting up either, I just followed the pattern of where he was appearing next and beat it that way. This video has so many dislikes but no comments explaining why he is wrong, because it's all true
If you want a bad Donkey Kong game, then you should check out the Donkey Konga games. Those are the real stinkers in the Donkey Kong franchise.
What about that racing game on the Wii? That one was ATROCIOUS.
dk barrel blast/jet race
It is a worse version of Taiko no Tatsujin. It could be a decent game if it had songs tailored to bongos in mind (or musics remade with actual bongos) like Guitar Hero, but these games are filled with random songs and a DK skin.
Returns and Tropical Freeze are way worse
I came here to Expand Dong.
Damn, I Fucking Hate DONKEY KONG 64 Developed By RareWare Published by NINTENDO And Released On Nintendo 64
Are any of the classic "Tomb Raider" games on your list? (By classic I mean the PS1 Games!!)
I can imagine fans of the game feeling salty after watching this 😂
Been trying to work up motivation to get past the first level since 1999
This was me aswell, I just finished this like a month ago though, I was such a big fan of dkc I had to get through this one way or another
Damn the fucking switches
great video man keep up the good work!!!
***** that too.
awesome video, as per usual
You mention rare replay, do you own an xbox one? And ye I hate the n64, so glad i was able to play ocarina of time and majora's mask on 3ds. and other rare games on xbox.
+DRM Sparkles No but Alek does
Another great one, m8!
Tbh i loved this game it was a highlight for me on 64 So much content!
With the whole item collecting problem, can't you just simply collect what you can get with one kong, backtrack to the character select, and then collect what you can with the next kong etc.
That's exactly the problem with the game. In addition, you have to get another kong for certain things in order to do the task with the corresponding kong.

Someone who is willing to stand up to the gods?!
finally someone who isn't blinded by nostalgia.
4:58 Goes from speaking mostly calm to yelling out of nowhere. Lol
Conkers bad fur day was a more recent game and used the largest cartridge capacity
I have a lot of nostalgia for this game, and I still really enjoy it. But really, it isn't very good at all. It's really dated, repetitious and boring. I'm glad that you've shown the problems of this game and how it isn't a very good game at all. Great review Jak!
and speaking of resident evil biohazard remake on current platforms.. since when did rareware got to Microsoft?
oh those are Resident evil/Biohazard hd remaster aka 4k remaster on current platforms.
