Craig Frederighi has been a disaster for iOS. Under him, iOS is getting buggier every year and things are just breaking more often than before. Also Apple refuses to fix the most basic problems in iOS and is more interested in chasing customisation or AI. Things like the dogshit keyboard or lack of a back gesture or how it doesn’t ask you which sim to use when calling someone or how it doesn’t show you the ETA to full charge while charging your phone or how you can’t change the notification tone for specific apps, and so on.

Between actually understanding what I’m telling her to do for basic tasks, and ChatGPT integration for more advanced stuff, she’s actually pretty good now. Visual intelligence is also pretty handy sometimes and writing tools is… mixed. Sometimes useful sometimes not. Genmoji and Image Playgrounds suck though. Those can go die in a fire.

If it's implemented well then it could be great. I used ChatGPT many time daily and in general it's great at saving me from having to search multiple forums for answers, basically saving a lot of time. At first it did get a lot wrong, but the latest model seems to be a lot more accurate. My problem with Apple is that they're using AI to deliver cringy tacky looking features like their image generator that looks like cheap clipart from the 1990's! How about actually making Siri work really well, make it provide accurate answers and better understand context and enable full conversations, that would be way more useful for most people who can afford a high end iPhone. How about using AI to improve camera image processing, improved noise reduction, get rid of their excessive over sharpening, improved scene analysis for more dynamic images without over brightened shadows, or 5x pics that sometimes look like a blown up JPG from a 1 Mpix camera! They seem to focus on gimmicks rather than actual useful features that AI could be really useful for!

0:48 1000 dollar phone which they intentionally crippled by not having enough ram. Tim Cook said in a recent interview that they started developing Apple intelligence sometime back in 2017. So they definitely knew the requirements for having these AI models run on device. I mean it’s crazy how the phone you got last year is “obsolete” for Apple intelligence. Almost all the Apple intelligence features are crappy. Except for the ai rewrite tool maybe. That’s the only thing I can see any use for, being a non native English speaker.

"It was already apparent that AI and machine learning were huge... It became obvious that we had to divert lots of people to it, that it would be a new era for our products." We knew but we intentionally made our old devices outdated for our crappy on-device AI is the message I’m getting.

Another problem I've found is the new voicemail.
It is great if your phone is in signal range, you are not in a call, and you choose not to answer for whatever reason.
However, if for whatever reason your phone is unable to answer the call, because you are already in a call, there's no phone signal, it has a dead battery or whatever, then it falls back to your carrier's voicemail, and at least on the network my girlfriend uses, you don't get voicemail notifications from the carrier if the live voicemail feature is enabled, but you do if you go into the settings app and disable live voicemail.
As for me, I have voicemail disabled on my carrier, I found I was receiving voicemails from scam callers in the middle of the night when my phone was on do not disturb, and I figured out I needed to disable voicemail in a second place.

They should do something similar to what they’ve done with iOS 12 back in the day.
They added a lot of features during the recent iterations, but they are really buggy.
For instance, at least in my case airdrop almost never works. It either does the animation but the files do not transfer, or NameDrop overwrites airdrop.
Another thing is that my contacts names rewrite themselves as the username of the contact in question.
So I feel like, for iOS 19 they should keep all of the devices that support IOS 18, but make the software more…usable 🥶.

Apple was one of the first companies to scan the pictures on your device for "troublesome" content. How do you think they do this? What kind of dashboards do they have for your pictures in Cupertino? How do you think they analyze false positives? You can look up the topic from security specialists on UA-cam. DO NOT trust any claims about privacy and AI unless you’re hosting the LLM yourself.

Actually Siri is split into 2 parts. 18.1 improved it’s ability to understand speech a little better, like stumbling over your words when setting a timer it will still understand. 18.2 added the ChatGPT integration. 18.4 is supposed to add the “context aware” features where you can tell Siri to pull up your itinerary that is split across different apps like mail, messages and GPS. So Siri has been improved so far, but you’re right it is marginal until 18.4 comes out to deliver the rest of it.

When I replace my current iPhone SE 2nd Gen with an iPhone 16e (assuming that is what they end-up calling the SE 4) next spring, I’ll definitely play around with the Apple Intelligence features for curiosity’s sake, but they’re nothing I’m desperately waiting for the opportunity to try out.

I think the lesson in all this is that hardware and software cycles are NOT in lockstep. The software will be ready when it's ready, but the hardware capable of running it has to come first. You can't expect everything on day 1.

Yes, if Apple had done what creators wanted, rush out a non-ready Apple Intelligence then they would, guess what, be making the same flexing videos! Anyway as the disclaimer says, Apple Intelligence is beta, and for those upset at beta bugs and development should withdraw from the beta and wait for the public release. I have a Pixel 8 Pro and there is no AI that I use. For me, and probably 90% of phone users AI is not that useful at the moment.

@@andyH_England The issue here is that Apple may have overpromised on their AI integration. There was no need to hype AI features if they were not ready to deliver on them. I've been using ChatGPT since its launch, and it has worked perfectly for me. Integrating AI into iOS wasn't something users explicitly demanded, so this move feels unnecessary. Apple could have focused on improving its existing features instead. We shall keep judging them based on their promise.

    • @andyH_England
      @andyH_England Місяць тому

@@davidkafambe1037 Apple did what any sensible company would when faced with a new feature like AI, they set the ball in motion, but have done it slowly and surely as they understand it is in its infancy and there is no rush.
The same with marketing, look at Microsoft and CoPilot, Samsung, and YT creators all marketing AI, why point to Apple not them as well? It is because Apple is the usual target for flexing. They would be utter fools not to market it when rivals are squeezing AI marketing to its limit. You must understand this so it is surprising that you express that view.

Excellent video. Spot on. I agree with you 100 percent.
Apple Intelligence is a total dud. This should NOT have been the headline feature for iPhone 16.
As I always tell other people: *The only thing worse than having no AI assistant is having one you can't trust.*
Look at it this way: If you hired a personal assistant who screwed up as often as Apple Intelligence did, wouldn't you fire their ass immediately? Of course, you would.
So why cut Apple Intelligence any slack?
Ninety percent of Apple Intelligence is pure gimmickry. The rest is marginally useful *when it doesn't screw up.*

The most annoying thing is if anything is slightly complicated it will use GPT anyway so why older iPhone shouldn’t have it?? Technically AI does nothing and GPT is on cloud. In "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles," Del Griffith, ever the resourceful salesman, peddles shower curtain rings as fashionable earrings to unsuspecting customers. Fast forward to Apple's AI journey, and the tech giant seems to be channeling its inner Del. Despite its reputation for innovation, Apple finds itself lagging in the AI race, primarily due to a lack of infrastructure for deploying large language models globally-a domain where it has minimal experience.
In a twist of irony, Apple's attempt to integrate ChatGPT into iOS leans heavily on Microsoft Azure's cloud services. It's as if Apple is selling shower curtain rings as earrings, dressing up its AI capabilities while relying on a competitor's infrastructure. This scenario underscores the core issue: Apple's struggle to establish a robust AI framework, highlighting its dependence on external partners to stay afloat in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
