    My brother work in French Legion,he did go when he was 18,from Albania,now he is 35 and still going hard,he have a beautiful life there,family and did make good money,he was deployed in diffentet places,and he loves it. He have a french passport

    I was a liaison to them during the Gulf War. I was in the 101st Airborne...
    Came back with a Beret and everything.

      USMC is tougher training than FFL. My Drill Instructors used to make fun of Recruits, telling them that if they don't cut it there at bootcamp to become Marines, then they could definitely join the French Foreign Legion. 😂😂😂😂😂

    I was going to join. I wanted to learn some French before I left. During that time my pops got sick and I had to stick around to take care of him. During the year of me taking care of him before he passed life got so busy and I never went. My dream was to join the Army but they wouldn't accept me so I was going to do the next best thing imo. Those dudes are total badasses. Part of me regrets not going still but the other half is happy with where my life went. I just always wanted to join and now I'm to old. Kids if you have a dream follow it. No regrets.

    For those wondering about having to learn French, you will be taught French and you will speak it, quickly. You'll be amazed how fast you learn when the pressure is on. Learning French in the FFL is the easiest part.

    I’ll always stand by my opinion that France is and always will be our oldest ally. Regardless of what you might think of their past performances in warfare, the French people are tenacious. The FFL just reinforces that. And that last bit about them telling Interpol to f*ck off is gold

    My brother was in the Kegion for 12 years. One of the first responders into Rwanda when the genocide started happening. He doesn’t 6 months there. Was in the civil war in Chad and many more conflicts. He was awarded so many medals and the stories he had to tell are like nothing you can imagine. Here’s to my brother and his bravery.

    Back in the day they supposedly had a fair number of SS personnel who had fought in WW2, and perhaps had war crimes in their past. Many of them died in VietNam or Algeria.

      A few of my friends went to Rhodesia after Vietnam and were fighting against the Communist their- the Mau Mau Rebellion caused thousands of deaths of not only people but wildlife to . They killed hundreds of Elephants and Rhinos for their Ivory and the Chinese Medical uses of the horn . It was a lot like the way when trains first crossed our American prairies and thousands upon thousands were slaughtered basically to starve the Indians and collect a few hides .

    The legion looks after the men till they die if they live in the retirement section, the life is still disciplined and routine based but to a lower level then serving troops obviously, but if they want to stay with the legion because it's the only family they have they can

    I've been thinking about trying to join the legion for a while now but I read on the website that you have to apply in person. Not sure if I can afford a trip to France only to get rejected on some off chance, but I guess I understand the point.

      There probably is an office near you. I know in the Netherlands you can apply in Rotterdam, they ship you to France asap.

    Me I could not do such. Thought abt it. I was also warned abt it as well.

    I looked into this after I got out. The 2 recruiting stations in France, they’ll just take you right then and there. You renounce your citizenship and go. You can get ranked for having prior service or other skills that would be considered “significant” to the FFL.

      Ranked? Man we had guys who were officers before in their armies, everybody starts as legionnaire and it dkesn't matter what you did before, as you see he did it also to corporal rank, which is almost everybody in legion who makes 5 years do it, mine was at 2,4 year service mark.

    Beside that you have stict rules the first few years, you are part of legion all the time, you wear the uniform all the time, can't get married.. etc
    You can get back your name and nationality after you served if you want it.
    They are respected but also fear, for many soldier the legion became their family and due to their activity and the uprooting of their culture/country/past.
    But the time where you have war criminal, drug traffickers et stuff like that is a story from the past mainly.

    How I never found out details about the FFL until I was 41-42 after trying 8-10x to join the army n marines between ages 18-35 will probably haunt my thoughts til the day I die. Will never ever forget that moment n chewing my buddy out for not saying something. (First 3 felonies at age 14, many more through 22 if curious why denied. All for fighting. Not scumbag criminal sht)

    Nowadays…after some time (1-3 years) they are obligated to change your given name with your real name.
    They will hand you an official document for that.
    Exactly to avoid stupid legal issues in France or abroad….while serving the FFL and to also avoid certain restrictions.

    I talked to a recruiter in Germany from th FFL while stationed there. Later in the years at the age of 33, they weren't interested because of my age, even though i had done some contract work. I was told that my contract work was spotty, because i had extended times between deployments. ( 1 yr to 16 mos.) I had somewhat a life.

    I had a gung-ho kid in my platoon in the USMC, dude joined at 17 he was the youngest marine on base two years in a row for the Ball.
    All but one of the SNCOs for out platoon were basically useless and treated the non-rates like shit.
    I was sure this kid was going to go to the FFN after our unit wouldn't let him transfer to another unit after passing their 3 day long test and then at the end of the Gulf War they wouldn't let him take my place on a plane headed back to the states so he could get married, they made him sit there in Al-Jabail for another 6 weeks I think.

      PID or Personal Identifiers. Social Security in the US has parallel systems in European nations, not necessarily that exact name.
      He is giving you an interpretation to have significance, not an objectively factual name for the designated agency or it's issue to persons.
      PID includes Birth date. That is why they change it. Prints and picture they don't attempt to change, but you have everything else erased, or overwritten.

      @@MarkH10 the the thing is that this social security number gives you rights for... social and health security, that's all, if you do not get back to your real name you can't buy shit on fake name, no car, not even renting appartment, nothinf, althoufg I managed to get forfeit on my mobile phone because they didn't care so much in shop, but everything else is a no go, that's why this whole new identity is just for recruitment process, so you also feel that you start new life, you can't also get a civil driver license on that name neither, there are a lot of things you can't have with that, that's why it's worth jack shit and 90% or more legos go back to real name.

    I once knew this dude name Leon. He ran to take care of his family his neice in particular. Started fighting bareknuckle street fights for cash. He got hooked up with this oldhead who used to fight a bit and tried to steer him in the right direction. Needless to say he got involved with this shady lady who wind up playing him in the long run and betting against him with this beast of a man named Atilla. Leon won and everything worked out in the end but this dude was a badass. Had 2 guys waiting for him at end to take him back to the Legion. Was called Lionheart from that day forward.

    The problem with a _nom de guerre_ is that you are no longer a citizen of your country of origin. Any attempt by your government or your family to find you will be blocked by the Legion.
    You don't get French citizenship (and the chance to become an NCO) until you have completed your first 5 years of service.
