The Evergreen Campus madness was a bit different. It was specifically vvhite people that were told they COULDN'T be on campus for a day that Brett didn't adhere to. It was traditionally a day without students or faculty of color attending class or work, IF THEY CHOSE, to display how involved and vital to the functioning of campus and society they are. It was born out if a play, actually. They decided to make it that white people CAN'T go on campus bc they are racists colonists and wanted a day where they "feel safe", which is undoubtedly racist and discrimination.
So Im gonna be serious here and hopefully someone will try to educate me instead of calling me names or attacking me. I really want to know. facebook, twitter, etc. are platforms that are privately owned right? So for people saying that they have no right to block me or not allow me to speak my voice..... how is that different than me saying....I should be allowed to go on Fox news, or the adam carolla show (which are also private platforms) and then be able to speak my mind. Correct? Am I missing something? Again, Im not looking to get into an argument, Im looking for logical explanations of how my example would be different. Thanks. Get it on.
If someone actually does say these platforms "don't have the right" to remove what they want, that is a factually incorrect statement. However, it still is censorship. Censorship is still censorship even if it's done legally. Speaking for myself, I think censorship should be avoided except only in cases where actual laws are being broken, even if the person censoring has the legal right to do so. I value free speech. We all seem to agree that the government shouldn't be able to censor us, hence the 1st Amendment of The Constitution. I'd argue that the same reasons we value and protect our RIGHT to free speech apply to free speech everywhere, whether or not we have a "right" to it. To think otherwise is sort of like saying that you support our laws against murder, but if someone takes someone else's life out in international waters it's no big deal. You either believe something is right or wrong and whether a law happens to sanction it or forbid it is secondary. As to your comparison between allowing someone to say what they want on UA-cam versus Fox News, the big difference is that the former only requires that someone host the content while the latter is a complete commandeering of someone else's property. If I put up a video on UA-cam, I'm not stopping every other UA-cam video from playing. If I take over the studio at Fox News, Fox News is deprived of their ability to conduct business. There's no comparison between the impact each thing has on others.
@@davidjohnson7484 Hmmm. I appreciate your reply. I still don't see the difference. Social media platforms are media. Fox or any other news or entertainment show are also media. No where did i include "taking over" a studio and not allowing them to conduct their business. The comparison is : If you say you should be allowed to voice your opinion on someone else's media platform-why cant I voice my opinion on someone else's media platform?
@@chilibonze You didn't mention taking over a studio, but given the characteristics of what they do I couldn't imagine (and still can't) how else you would voice your opinion on their platform. How would you voice your opinion on their platform in a way that is different than how they do it? While "social media" contains the word "media", that doesn't mean there aren't significant differences between what they are & what they do. What it boils down to is what it is they claim they are versus what they actually are. Fox News, CNN, Adam Carolla Show etc don't claim to be a platform where the average Joe can post things and see things posted from just anyone. They are a one-way flow of information and don't claim otherwise. People know what they are getting and can choose to watch or not. On the other hand, social media does claim to be a space where anyone can actively participate and was built for that purpose. So the problem I have with social media censoring people (with the exception of actual illegal behavior) is that they have changed the rules in the middle of the game without warning, transparency or consistency. Because they are a private company, I agree they can do whatever they want. But they are claiming to be one thing and have become quite another. It's not good that people believe that those platforms are spaces of true free-flow of information, ideas & opinions when in fact they are not. I think the problem is correcting itself as people have recently seen more overt censorship. People are realizing it's not what it used to be and that certain ideas are being censored. And so long as people realize what they are really getting and not getting from a particular platform, I have no problem with it. I think censoring is a mistake on the part of social media platforms, but they are free to make that mistake if they want. And if they are going to make that mistake, I think at the very least they should be required to be more honest and transparent about what they are taking down off their platforms so that people can make informed decisions about whether they want to participate or not.
@@davidjohnson7484 but social media does not claim, as you say to be a platform where anyone can post anything. They make that perfectly clear in the user agreement, which you may or may not read in its entirety, but it is an agreement which clearly states that they may censor or block users. As far as free speech is concerned: The first amendment only protects the government from censoring you or abridging your free speech. It does not protect private companies from abridging your free speech. So again, I am left with my original question. Why can people make the claim that they have a right or have protection to voice their opinons on a private social media platform, but not on other platforms I mentioned.
@@chilibonze You said you were looking for logical explanations and I've given you some. Everything you just said indicates you haven't really read my responses. I tried! Cheers.

I find it stunning that anyone in the media could be in the least bit surprised at the caning of two homosexual men under a country's Islamic-based law.
