  • Which category on a tension chart does your spoke fit into, steel or aluminum? Calvin shows how to determine this by looking at the PROPERTIES OF MATERIAL. Using a few simple tests, you can figure out if your spoke is made of steel or aluminum and find the proper category to tension spokes.

    Aluminium spokes: a really bad idea. Give them 6 months in a wet/salty environment and the nipples seize onto the spokes, or into the rim. Try to turn them, & you snap the spoke. That's $8-15 right there. Repeat. Just use good quality steel ones.

    There are some very strong magnets in discarded electric toothbrush heads. Harvest them when you change heads.

    spokesperson .. Mr. Calvin off topic could you do a video on bike reflectors removal on spokes ..should you and are they their for counter balance of valve stems more so than for safety i can't get a strait answer from the whole of the internet i think the weight is so small it will not make a difference yet ...? plus they suck to remove and could you show us how to remove the evil plastic sons of B words so as to not mess up our spokes you and your team are great i have learned a lot from you guys keep up the awesome videos

      I can't say that i've ever seen a reflector that wasn't removable with a quarter turn of a flat-blade screwdriver, but i might be old

      @@ezequielpiacenza3776 Entiendo. Park Tool, como muchos productos comercializados como Norte Americanos, tiene sus fábricas en China. Hay productos Europeos, hechos en Europa, de mejor calidad pero menos publicitados. Ojalá algún día fabriquemos productos de alta calidad para nosotros mismos en LatAm.

      Those are what they call metal o-rings. The help keep the wipers in contact with the stanchion.

    Just use a neodymium magnet. You can disassemble an old hard drive not solid state drive to get one. That one will catch to carbon and stainless steel quite well.

      I recomen storing and using the neodimum magnet in a ziplock bag. Any metal shaving will get stuck to the magnet and be a PITA to remove it. The bag makes this waay easier.

    Why not titanium? Both stronger and lighter than steel and some would say more dampening too.

      There are Ti spokes available and like many things the reason it is not used more often is because of price.

      Try to put a reliable thread on a Ti spoke, one that does not create stress risers at the thread root. Pretty hard to.

    So carbon steel is stronger than stainless steel?

      The properties are pretty much the same. Carbon steel can be harder compared to stainless. Carbon steel tends to have a higher tensile strength. The wheel will not know the difference and it will behave the same.

      It's only called _aluminum_ in North American English. Everywhere else it's called _aluminium_ .
