First off thank you for watching hope you enjoyed this amazing video where a guy sits in his room and says stuff for 20min! Second, the opinions in this video are just that, opinions. Some of them you may disagree with some of them you may think I’m way off on, and that’s okay, it’s just my opinion. Finally Corrections and Elaborations further on points in this video: 1:56 - Enunciation is generally expected to be perfect, but this isn’t to say if you struggle with it you won’t get work. You can train and improve, and sometimes perfect enunciation is sought after so if you do struggle with this don’t worry, it CAN be a strength at times. 2:26 - I’m nit picking here with Zeke’s Demo. 4:36 - Modulation typically implies pitch shifting, but for the sake of clarity when I said modulation here I generally just mean heavily edited audio to make it sound a certain way e.g. Robotic. My argument is that you as the talent will most likely never do the editing to your own audio in professional work environment. Thus, in your demo you want to show off your natural voice without any editing. 10:30 - Unfortunately I’ve been having troubles getting the “Big Dick Energy Shout” to be a normal saying, nobody says it but I won’t rest until people are. 10:52 - After doing a bit more research to make sure I was 100% sure on this point, it seems that SOME professionally produced demo’s do have the name said outloud before the start, however it’s normally a voice that is from someone else, not the actual person recording the demo, and it seems to be consistent amongst an agency. For example see here: www.londonvoiceover.com/category/voices/boys/ SOME of the VA’s have someone saying their name at the start of their demo, but other’s don’t? I’m not sure why, but I couldn’t find any professional demos where it was the Voice talent saying their own name at the start of their demo. So basically I am wrong technically to say no one does this but, it seems really rare, and in my personal opinion I would recommend not saying your name at the start of a demo. 14:50 - This is not entirely true, a BIG room appropriately covered in acoustic foam should be fine, but the floor is also important and needs to be the correct marital, a thick carpet would be perfect. As sound emits in every direction the moment you talk. However, I often see a common confusion that the foam will make the room sound proof, that is not true, this type of foam is to make the room perfect for recording. 18:25 - Elaborating further on “voice quality” I mean the qualities he’s giving his voice, aka pitches, speed, delivery.
@@binglething Ok, but all voice actors read from scripts. It is their job to make it sound like it's a character speaking, instead of sounding like someone reading words from a page.
I think some of the problems are that people aren't putting emotions into their lines. They're trying to read the lines like you would a book in your head. You need to speak as if that person is you, and/or as if you are that person. I know this is kind of hard for some people but you won't get very far if you don't put emotion into your lines and if you don't sound or act like a real person would.
I agree. It’s sad to say, but the acting in a lot of these just isn’t that great. For VA you have to not only have a good vocal range, but also be able to show that emotion through only your voice. Voice acting is like regular acting, except it’s solely dependent on your voice. You could be making the most pained expression during a sad scene, but nobody’s going to see that, the medium only relies on the voice. And just like with stage and screen acting, you need to become the character. As Connor was saying about the acting needing to feel “real,” if you don’t believe it, your audience won’t, either.
Connor: “I think British people are better at doing an American accent than Americans are at doing a British accent. And this further proves me point. Lol! I’m kidding, I’m kidding.” When he’s not kidding but also not wrong.
I think Connor is just speaking in general terms. I’ve heard some terrible American accents from some non-US actors (e.g. Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Michael Caine). People hear things differently of course, but I think he just means that on the whole, from his experience, he feels that Brits can grasp American accents better than the other way around; I happen to agree. Christian Bale, Millie Bobby Brown, Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland, Idris Elba, Freddie Highmore, Daniel Day-Lewis (the list goes on) are all examples of Brit actors who can pull off convincing American accents. Some Americans actually believed a number of those actors were Americans in real life too, for a while. Honestly, the best British accent I’ve heard from an American actor is Renee Zellweger in Bridget Jones’ Diary. No-one’s been able to top her yet, in my book.
9:13 That voice sounds familiar... oh wait! That’s me XD I did that with an animation studio and the microphone on was SHIT. But hey. I had fun with it. @@MessApathy My friend was making an animation and I decided to surprise her with voice actors because I knew even though she was a talented animator, her plan of emailing famous voice actors wasn't gonna work out. Well after a while she kept putting off animating. She then said she had an essay due in an hour. I'm pretty good with essays and writing so I said "I'll write your essay but when I'm done I have to see some progress on the animation". When I finished she had "No motivation to do it". It kept going on like that then she complained that even though she was good at drawing she was bad at animating. I offered for her to draw the first and last frame of each scene and I'd animate in between. She was mad at me because she wanted to do everything herself. Including the voice acting since the famous voice actors she emailed didn't reply (surprising, right?). Then she completely stopped talking about the animation. If I mentioned it she would change the topic. Then she got a starwars obsession. Okay, I know enough about star wars to talk to her about it. But then after watching the regular series she watched all the disney series. And she had a crush on this guy from one of the disney fan series. I forgot who but she was obsessed. She would send pictures of him. She finally "got the motivation to draw" (only ship art with her and him and him from sExY angles). I thought her days of being a shitty friend were behind her. Anything not about ✨ whatshisname ✨ she'd completly ignore. I tried sending her a vent about my life because she used to give great advice. Nope. So long story short, sorry. Also sorry about that, that kinda turned into a little vent.
@@Wasrealbeforehand Thanks, I blocked her without a word which i admit was a shitty thing to do, but i missed her and unblocked her now we just occasionally talk

11:03 the name this is something required in live theater auditions. it's called slating and makes sure the paperwork is for the right person and to make sure the director is ready before starting a monologue or song
Read out loud to yourself those words in sentences? That way you get used to saying them. Pronounce them slowly and listen to others when they pronounce them. I used to have to take speech therapy classes for my R's when I was a kid and we also did tongue exercises in the mirror, lol.
@@letmetakeajormungandrattha8591 kinda? I have to say the word Mass instead of Masks, same with Tess/Tests. I'm not sure if that's considered a lisp or not.
Not sure if it would help, but I'd try imagining/inserting an extra syllable starting with the consonant sound that tends to get omitted, then reducing the extra vowel sound by as much as possible. To put it simply, start with a Japanese accent and gradually work back.
The actress of Peggy also played Maria Reynolds, you sure you could pull that off? lol. I'd love to see that honestly, there's so many ways people could remake that song.
"stick to your voice style" me, an absolute madman: start voicing girls and children despite having a normal 23 years old voice. still manage to sound good tho

I would like to see him react to some german voice acting. We literally dub anything and i would like to hear his thoughts on it as a non german speaker
I was legit scared to watch this because I'm an amateur voice actor. I am glad I have, but God was I worried my dreams would just be crushed. Thankfully I know as a man with a deep speaking voice, a high pitched, enthusiastic British accent seems to suit me best. Especially for emoting.
With the right equipment I reckon I could be a.... fine, voice actor. I end up talking to myself a lot, and trying new voice impressions. However I hate listening to horrible recordings of myself, which I need to get use doing. Important or not, I'm also an Australian, and have a voice very similar to my father's, who can sound very angry at times. So whenever I shout/yell out, I sometimes scare myself and look around for anyone who might think I'm a angry little man child. I've always loved watching your video and I have, on many occasions, re-watch them multiple times.
stumbling onto this video, and hearing the friendlyjordies "theme" music in the background is wild I had no idea it was royalty-free music this whole time lol
That girl voice at the 6:20 mark... The issue didn't sound like a pitch or range problem, more so just a placement one. I think she needed to lay off the breathy voice for the character and project it more, like a very animated person talking and invading one's personal space. In other words she needed to push it out more in front rather than letting all the air escape from her nose.
I’ve been taking a crack at voice acting. My very first role was a Skyrim mod called “Disabled Citizens by MihailMods.” Though, this was when I had no experience at all, ever since then I’ve been practicing and practicing. I’m confident in my voice.

I think some of the problems are that people aren't putting emotions into their lines. They're trying to read the lines like you would a book in your head.
Oh, he's wrong. I've heard Brits do American accents and most are shit.
If everyone in the U.S. were from Texas you might've had a point.
American accents are less particular. If it's not european, it sounds vaguely american. Ask them to go region specific and they'll likely fail.

The first episodes of DBZ Abridged were clearly recorded from their bedroom.
Anyone have any suggestions for people that have problems with “-sks” and “-sts” words? (Masks, tests, angsts, words like that)
Yes! Several times!
Read out loud to yourself those words in sentences? That way you get used to saying them. Pronounce them slowly and listen to others when they pronounce them. I used to have to take speech therapy classes for my R's when I was a kid and we also did tongue exercises in the mirror, lol.
Like, if you have a lisp?
@@letmetakeajormungandrattha8591 kinda? I have to say the word Mass instead of Masks, same with Tess/Tests. I'm not sure if that's considered a lisp or not.
Not sure if it would help, but I'd try imagining/inserting an extra syllable starting with the consonant sound that tends to get omitted, then reducing the extra vowel sound by as much as possible.
To put it simply, start with a Japanese accent and gradually work back.

I was legit scared to watch this because I'm an amateur voice actor. I am glad I have, but God was I worried my dreams would just be crushed.
Thankfully I know as a man with a deep speaking voice, a high pitched, enthusiastic British accent seems to suit me best. Especially for emoting.

"I WANNA HEAR BIG DICK ENERGY" Had me hella weak. Lmao
.... Hearing these made me want to try my hand at voice acting 😂

Hi, I’m that girl! 😆 I know this comment is from a month ago, but thanks for the advice
I’ve been taking a crack at voice acting. My very first role was a Skyrim mod called “Disabled Citizens by MihailMods.” Though, this was when I had no experience at all, ever since then I’ve been practicing and practicing. I’m confident in my voice.
