I'd rather hear a quality actor that doesn't sound that much like the person (like the shaq voice actor) than having the real ball player coming in there and not knowing what they're doing
I'm pretty sure that was just a create-a-character they named shaq anyway.
some of the voice acting in the skate series had this problem. the people doing the lines weren't voice actors, they were skaters.

So basically a voice actor would mark up the script like a musician would mark up a piece of sheet music
Funny thing is, as a musician, I actually write most non-school writing like I would speak. Excess punctuation used to outline phrasing and stresses is honestly of great use. Just have to be sure to turn it off for academic papers..

Shaq was one of the only players with real acting experience, explains why he actually sounded good. everyone else sounded like they were reading directly off the script. This is embarrassing.
@@epicthecandydragon6079 I mean to be fair, they're not professional voice actors. The director should've provided voice coaching or something.

Haha, so happy you ended up watching the Finnish Digimon dub, it's a classic! "DID THEY SAAYYY?" It still haunts me...
Why do I feel like all nba players have that very bored, mumblely tone of voice lol
Because they probably are. They don't care about this acting shit. They want to play some fucking Basketball, not record some cringey lines.
@@jayive34 they probably don't care all that much, but also NBA2K has basically been a scam for the last 10 years, so they also weren't paid enough or given enough prestige around the project to have any reason to care. the director probably handed them a script, had them speak into a mic once and sent them home with 5 bucks.
Because that's exactly what happened. It likely went down like this: "Here's what we would have paid a professional voice actor for 100 hours of work. Just say the line and we'll use the first take because we know you aren't an actor and will only do this if it's worth your time."

“And the police are coming to get me apparently”
About the Quasimodo acting: They did the entire project in one continuous take. Also in pretty much every animated project since the beginning of time, the production company records the voices in the native language and then animates around the voices. In this case, the entire animation was already finished and the actors were given a script. Now they're recording everything in one take, and they have no idea how to deliver the lines. If they finish reading a line but their character is still flapping, they need to fill in the silence with some weird ass ad-libbed yelps. I don't think it COULD have been good. It's like trying to bake a cake but without and flour, eggs or an oven
when you have to pay a voice actor an nba player's salary and you're paying them by the minute on an already fairly limited budget. you bet your a** you're only gonna use one freaking take and make it as quick as possible.

He missed the best part: “get over yourself man” I watch that video at least one a week
I’m an Audio Engineer and after watching multiple videos of yours I have been pretty impressed with your knowledge of Audio. One other thing I feel people should know about XLR is that records Balanced Audio. It has three contacts, positive, Negative, and Ground. The positive takes the natural signal, the negative takes the flipped natural signal. Static usually occurs during the process of the signal going from the mic to the input device. Just like a car antenna which captures static, the wire in a XLR cable captures static. When the signal gets the signal processor it flips the negative signal to match the positive and sense the static that was captured by the wire, it was the Same across the negative and positive signal and when the processor flips the negative signal it also flips the captured static making it cancel out giving you a clean Audio signal. USB however is an Unbalanced signal only have a Positive and a Ground. The ground is just a reference whereas the positive actually carries signal. With no flipped signal the static will be herd out of an unbalanced cable. Another example of an unbalanced cable would be a quarter inch TS Guitar cable. Because the quarter inch guitar cable is unbalanced you will sometimes get static coming out of your guitar amp. Also the longer the cable the more static it will capture. Thank your for coming to my TED talk.

From what I remember you couldn't skip the cutscenes in NBA 2K15, so yes, we did watch the cutscenes. Because we had to.
16:14 He sounds like he might be in his 30s at the oldest but to me, he doesn't sound like he even wants to portray an old man. He could at least try to fake it lol.
At 6:05, you explain the concept of line reading. Now I understand why it would be a little much to do that for every line and also that a lot of the character in the voice comes from the actors interpretations and readings of each line, but I feel sometimes, especially in games, a line is read in a way where it feels like the actor wasn't given the same context for a line that they would have had, had the director specified which words to stress or put emphasis on.
An example of what I mean comes from my recent first plauthrough of Kingdom Hearts. In the 100 Acre Wood section of the game, you help Winnie the Pooh find his friends and, at the end, you get this cute little cutscene where everyone from the 100 Acre Woods are sitting together on a hill in the sunset before Sora, the protagonist, stands up to leave and says something to the effect of "Now I've got to go find my friends". Now obviously, the context here is that Sora helped Pooh find his friends and now he's off to find his. Therefore, the line should be read as "Now I've got to go find MY friends" with stress on the possessive. Instead, the actor read the line without any such stress, so the effect of the line is lost. This might seem minor but it pulled me out of the scene a little as it seemed to me it was supposed to sound poetic.
Could this have been improved if the actor had had the line read to him to understand the context? Is voice acting in gaming different in that because of how each scene is separated by gameplay, the actors don't have the same context as if they were reading a full movie script and grasped the plot enough to gauge that kind of context? Or perhaps, that they only have their characters lines to work with, with no idea of what other characters in the scene might be saying, or how they might be engaging with their character? It feels that way sometimes.
I'm sure it's also possible that it could have something to do with translation or localisation from the Japanese version of the game. That maybe the context was lost from the staff that translated the lines to the staff that record the actors' lines or something.
Anyway, longest comment ever, I apologise. I'm genuinely curious. The scene can be found online if you search for the 100 Acre Wood part of Kingdom Hearts 1 if you happen to read this and are able to answer my questions. Keep up the good work, I really enjoyed this video.
I'm not a pro, but from what I know:
Could this have been improved if the actor had had the line read to him to understand the context?
Very probably yes. Although having the line read to you doesn't help to fit it to another actor's line if there are variations and you have to record alone (without the other actor).
Differences between cutscenes and full scenes/movies vs. Character lines:
Essentially yes.
Localization can happen in a way that the character lines are read separately, without much of a context. Which, afaik, is a usual thing for cheaper/quicker productions, and frequently used when you're essentially not casting but are going for simple and straight hiring actors. You'd pick them by a profile and sit them down, there's not too much of a "proof hearing" of those.
Cutscenes vs. full scenes: The structure of a cutscene is very much different from a full scene. You have a short length of time that needs to deliver on an already existant motive/mood (which you might not see as a voice actor, or the developers might have failed to get it along), and usually there's a lot of information drop going along with it. Which means there's no time to establish some mood. Instead a voice act just has to deliver it all on exactly that point. And, if the actor is unlucky, there's a quick change from a sad scene to a humorous scene to a romance scene. And again: Time issue. Additional takes cost money.
And yes, translation can f**k stuff up by a lot.
"FINALLY, LESS CHILD SUPPORT" 😂😂😂😂
"DID HE JUST NUT?"
"Spunk, YES"
22:08 why does he sound like the mob boss from zootopia
this was actually educational though? thanks Connor
Could You Do A Video About How To Voice Act? Or At Least Do A Good Kermit Impression?!
Hey! Some further elaboration on points for those who care! (I ALSO GOT THINGS WRONG)
4:40
- When I say "equalisation" I mean the audio mixing in general, definitely could have used a better word.
7:34
- When I'm talking about annotating a paper, it's important to make sure you get in the habit of being told how to deliver a line and immediately knowing a way to annotate that so that you don't do the line the wrong way again. This is just my way of doing it. It's RARE I ever get to tell them to bold or italic the words they want me to hit in that way so I just annotate as I go in the session.
10:33 - My knowledge on the technical side is clearly not the best, the USB microphone doesn't send the raw audio wave into the PC sound card for processing. The USB microphone has its own convertor within the microphone.
11:17 - The Blue yeti is not awful, it's just not my recommendation I know A LOT of people buy it, and it definitely delivers. I just know your money can be better spent. For example, if you'd like to buy the Samson CO1U it's $40 less at the time of posting and in my opinion, delivers higher quality.
Samson CO1U - amzn.to/2Mi9NB8
Basic XLR setup that will deliver a professional sound ($200):
Microphone AT2020 - amzn.to/2YTA0sP
My Recommended Audio Interface (I use this one, cannot recommend this enough) - amzn.to/2K8DlQX
Basic XLR cable - amzn.to/2JNqoLD
