Hi Evan. We may be small compared to the US. Here in Montreal (Quebec) Tesla's are wildly popular. I fully support it. My boss is considering sell his strictly due to Musk. FYI Dr. Mark Carney is the current front runner to take over the Liberal party. Ms. Freeland is second. Second, her resignation as finance minister had nothing to due with Justin Trudeau's response to Trump which is to go tit-for-tat but selectively by picking on blue states. Ironically some of them do a serious lot of business with Canada . He's held meetings with all Provincial Premiers to push for a unified response.
Yes the tarrif war has started. Let me make it clear that Freeland is not our choice for replacement as Liberal party leader. I have a Tesla which is the best car I have ever owned and until now I have been proud to drive a Telsa and do my part for the environment. Now I feel that I will be a target for misplaced anger because of Musk terrible behaviour. And yes I agree our politicians need to look at increasing competion with chinese brands such as BYD manufacturing plant in Canada.
Too much emphasis on Tesla, which has become a troubling symbol. Smaller and far more affordable EVs made for urban environments would sell in Canada. Please don't be too obsessed with Tesla. Freeland's comment touched on one iconic product on purpose. She is a tough negotiator who tussled with Trump #1 years ago over trade, and minimized the impact of a new trade agreement, essentially a tinkering and tune up and renaming of the old NAFTA. Back then Canadian steel, aluminum, uranium, the integrated car parts industry, lumber, Bombardier airplanes (high quality jets since sold to Airbus), manufactured goods and so forth were targeted. mainly in Trump states, and they complained bitterly to Trump when jobs and business were lost. Today Trump 2 is violating his own Trump 1 agreement. Canada-US trade is worth a trillion dollars a year, with Canada having a slight edge over the US. Canada now has a huge trade agreement with the EU ready and waiting, a deal Canada negotiated right after the Trump 1 trade fiasco. There are other continents that would love to trade with Canada too. PS: the next prime minister will likely be Mark Carney (winning the Liberal Party leadership), a well respected economist and former Bank of Canada and Bank of England governor, who also has years managing investment portfolios. He got Canada through the 2008 meltdown relatively unscathed compared to the US, and handled the UK economy as it got hammered by Brexit, a policy he vehemently disagreed with, and he helped smooth the stormy seas. Carney is on the same page as Freeland, perhaps not on Tesla, but certainly in standing up to the bully and looking to our many other allies for new trade relationships. He also wants to pursue clean energy big time in Canada if he becomes Canada's head of state. He thinks it's a great time to do so because Trump is walking the US back, and Canada could leap ahead and fill the vacuum. Carney has directly worked with the massive global investment numbers in clean energy vs petroleum (trillions vs billions) and that is one huge opportunity.
This could start a trend. Retaliatory tariffs on Tesla make good sense. Think if China did the same on all US cars and slapping export fees on anything shipping from Tesla China. Teslas revenue and component costs would be severely impacted .

If the EU did this as well, it might just work.
