First Drive! 2023 Cadillac Lyriq EV Is The Future Of Cadillac

  • The all-electric Lyriq is the most important vehicle Cadillac has launched in a generation. This first-drive at the press event in Park City, Utah is a deep dive into its performance, ride quality, interior, interface, design and Ultium battery technology. Plus, there’s that awesome grille. Tom Voelk drives a Debut Edition 340 horsepower rear-drive model with a 102kWh Ultium battery pack and finds General Motors is finally getting Cadillac back onto “The Standard of the World” track. Special thanks to drive partner Henry Payne with The Detroit News for spending extra time getting running footage.
Sorry folks, the dimensions graphic was left off. Lyriq's length = 196.7 inches / 4996. Width = 86.9 / 2207, Hight is 63.9 / 1623, Wheelbase is 121.8 / 3094. So it's about 2 inches shorter than an XT6 with a wheelbase nearly 10 inches longer. Lyriq is longer than XT5 by about 10 inches.

Your channel is one of the very best, Tom. Thanks for always being a pragmatic reviewer. The lack of rear seat climate controls and heat/cool seating is just awkward. The price point for the RWD version is really quite amazing. The waitlist is to be expected. As a child of the 60's/70's when Cadillac was the standard, it would be nice to see them return to the throne. As for interior noise, it's a Cadillac and should be quiet and like floating on air.

Phenomenal review as always Tom! Really love what Cadillac has done with the Lyriq - even before you stated it, I felt the interior aesthetics evoked the late 70’s Cadillacs I rode in as a young child, especially that steering wheel. I love how they’ve (supposedly) pulled from that era, similarly to Lincoln’s current interiors, giving the “true American luxury” vibe.
Now I’m anxiously awaiting the Celestiq prototype as the sneak peak photos look to drastically up the ante.

Very impressive product and what I was looking for in an EV, luxury at a reasonable price. Anyone else would have stuck a 130K price on this and wouldn't have batted an eye. @@OllieTownsendIII I think Cadillac made a great move downsizing their massive dealer network and weeding out the money hungry dealers who don’t really care about the brand or where they’re going but were truly just in it for the money. The only standing Cadillac dealerships are the ones who share this new vision of Cadillac with the manufacturer and they have invested in it. I think this move alone has significantly reduced the probability of huge dealership markups on new and future EVs from them.

Great review of a very impressive car. I learned to drive in a Sedan De Ville (1966) and am now on my third Escalade. I love the Escalade, and for a large SUV it is relatively efficient at 18.5 mpg average over 69k miles. So great to see Cadillac unleashed in the Lyriq. I recently went to a PHEV for daily transport and considered an ELR very seriously. Beautiful car, but really only a two-seater. Shifted to the second gen Volt and was closing in on one when I discovered the Honda Clarity. Ended up with a lightly used Touring version. The Clarity is built on the Accord platform, so it has a big back seat and trunk. Where we live (rural Rochester, MN) the gasoline motor gives me peace of mind with an undeveloped charging infrastructure and cold weather a good part of the year. Thanks for the review!

A very, very, impressive design. Period. Gorgeous. Caddy's design language has been really good lately and this is the best example to date. Looks fabulous from all angles. Seems like GM is on a roll with EVs right now. The Hummer, the Silverado and now this, I hope they all succeed and they probably will. Poor little Bolts and Volts just don't get the respect (or sales) they deserve. The Bolt EUV should be on everyone's shopping list if they are in the market for an 'entry-level' EV. I took delivery of the GV60 Premium (229 bhp RWD) in the UK just last week. With all the options bar digital wing mirrors ( not my thing) it truly is a luxurious vehicle - Nappa Leather and suede interior (even the head lining is suede ) and quality switch gear (if it looks like metal it is metal) all on the E-GMP platform so blistering charging with heat pump and battery conditioning.
However at 4.515m long it’s smaller I suspect than the Lyriq though I haven’t looked up the Lyriq’s dimensions yet.
I think comparisons to the Kia EV6 and Ionic 5 are a little unfair - they are not premium brands like Cadillac or Genesis and a £5K to £7K premium on a £50K vehicle if it’s not going on the drive train gets you a lot of creature comforts.
In the UK the RWD 229bhp 19” wheel Fully loaded GV60 is only £4K more than the AWD 314 bhp 20” wheel Kia EV6- that drop in drive train and £4K hike in price puts you in an all together another level of luxury! When you get in an optioned out GV60 you simply go “Wow!” and in the UK that is at sub £60K!
Of note the GV60 gets 3 level heated rear seats over the Lyriq. And its light tricks include the Genesis logo projected puddle lights and reverse lights which project dotted white lines on the road behind the vehicle.
Such an interesting time in the EV market if you can get one. I highly recommend exhibitions and shows to try and secure your EV early. Farnborough’s Fully Charged UK Live 2022 show end of April 2022 afforded me my opportunity. (Just 8 weeks to get a pre-spec’d model which luckily matched what I was after)!

CATL (world's largest battery maker) have announced a new type of battery already in EVs for testing. It won't be Lithium Ion but will be capable of 600 miles, lighter, fastest charging speed, can handle staying at 100% and can handle -20 temps without range loss. Totally different ways of handling the heat and cold dissipation ... you name it. All due to be supplied to well=known EV manufacturers in 2023. If I was looking for an EV, I'd be waiting one more year. It'll blow the doors off the competition. CATL are a company known for making battery announcements that really happen when they say it will. If GM have done so yet, they should become one of CATL's leading partners. Edit: These are Sodium-Ion batteries - yes, good, old salt.

I think "They seem to add a lot of unnecessary complexity and even weight." might be incorrect. I have worked on a lot of car doors -- from back in the day when windows cranked to 2020's. Electrification of door functions has reduced door mass and allows for design updates and ease of installation, that could only be dreamed of in the mechanical days. Not to mention the improvements in aerodynamics by smoothing the handles. Tesla has conventional door handles, that are pulled in at speed. Talk about complex! Door handles are just one of the hundred things Tesla changed that were nearly insignificant individually -- but added up to a big improvement in aerodynamics. Cadillac is going through the same process I think, but one upping Tesla with a door that can be opened with your hands full. I love this design feature.

This was a great review. I watch a lot of car reviews and I enjoyed yours so much I immediately subscribed. The Lyriq looks nice though it is a little too big for my taste. I think people would be insane to buy the currently available RWD model instead of waiting for the AWD model to come out in 2023. The AWD will be more powerful and from what I understand, only cost an additional $2K.

We take several long road trips (5k miles round-trip) and having to find charging on some of our trips is not possible (Mexico, Alaska) where the ELR can shine compared to the Lyriq. Fortunately we have a Volt that can sub for the ELR on those trips where I would love to take the Lyriq but can’t. I don’t even mind longer charge times but just not as long as required for 110v.

Another fun fact. The traditional "driver's set up" we experience in every car we drive, was pioneered by Cadillac (I think in the mid 1920s). When you get in any car, the steering wheel is in front, and to accelerate the "gas pedal" is the right pedal. The brake pedal is to the left of that. The clutch pedal (if equipped with manual transmission) is to the left of the brake. The shifter is also to the right (floor mounted, console mounted or column mounted). Cadillac was the first one to have what we would today consider a normal configuration and every brand followed that design later. If you are unsure what I mean, go watch a video how you drive a Model T. It's not like driving any other car. It's likely that if you had one, no one could steal it since no one would know how to drive it. Manufacturers all went with the Cadillac design so you could easily drive any vehicle since they are operate in a similar manner.

Currently own a Cadillac (ICE) and enjoy it. However, there is an aspect that I loathe: Cadillac dealerships. I reside in Southern California, thereby having a wider selection of dealerships, but they all are incompetent and out of touch on one level or another. My wife and I love the Lyriq, but until GM does something with their dealerships to meet today’s needs, and gets rid of the ones that have simply been around far too long…well…until then we are currently considering others brands. Too bad.

I am a current Model 3 owner who was thinking about a Y but will sell the model 3 when my ordered 2024 Lyriq arrives. I liked the minimalist interior of the 3 but it is budget rental noisy on the highway and the back seats aren't comfortable. At what Tesla is currently charging for the Y the Lyriq is a no brainer.
