The 19 Bach harpdichord suites are my favorites among his instrumental music, especially when played on a later more powerful & expressive harpdichord as in this brilliant recording which I love. The other Bach harpsichord suites I like when I want to listen to brilliance & utter depth of mastery are the partita #5 in e minor & the lone one in b minor, called an overture. But the French suites are most relaxing & more elegant and outshine the other 13 in their immediate appeal. We all have Bach to thank for his gift to posterity in music.
This little alternate Allemande, 819a (01:42:24) starts out so innocently but then suddenly becomes super-chromatic to a shocking degree. Bach, for such a traditionalist, definitely has moments where he sees far into the future, and this is one of them. =)
You must study counterpoint, basso contiuno, partimento and the Rameau's basse fundamentale. The firts three are really needed, this last one not so much.

It's actually A-392 Hz in this recording (sounds a whole tone lower than 440 Hz). Bach used a range of tunings in his time depending on where he was and what instruments were available.

I haven't seen such a dissonance like BWV 819a at 01:42:24 in Bach's composes. Bach knows how to create a beautiful pieces even with dissonances.
