    Kids will be kids - we've all done the exploring thing, and I probably would have done this one as well at you age. Having said that, It's a highly irresponsible thing to do; a careless step here and you would soon be in big trouble. While that's bad enough, I don''t hold with the idea of removing things that are not your property! It's theft at the end of the day. The fact that the locals don't like you being there, and that you had to have someone keep watch, tells it all, for you abused their wishes and used the opportunity to steal. The fact that the vessel is an abandoned wreck does not absolve your behaviour or intentions.

      You beat me to it Reg. I was with them up until I saw him take the sign and NOT put it up for others to see. When I saw the wrench being stolen that's when I thought I would comment. Guy's. You look like you are over the age of ten?! What have your parents not taught you. I assume from the comments in reply to Reg, that you have returned what is someone else's property. If you have not then your repentance is insincere. Cheers Dave Creek.

    Just a word of caution: Seafarers die on a regular basis when they enter "Enclosed Spaces" on ships, the steel structure absorbs oxygen in the rusting process which leads to an inert gas situation so people die from Hypoxia. You should test the atmosphere of an enclosed space with a gas monitor device to ensure the air is breathable.

    Sad to see Olympic in such poor shape. I remember riding on this vessel once from Orcas to Anacortes during the 80's. It was filling in for another vessel - only time I was ever on this ferry. That would have been not long before she was retired. For a number of years after Washington State Ferries unloaded it, you could see it in Eagle Harbor on Bainbridge Island, and then the current owners (I'm guessing) moved it to Ketron. Olympic's near sistership (not exactly identical) was Rhododendron, which served the Point Defiance-Tahlequah run for the last decade or so of her career, and was retired in 2012. That ship is up in British Columbia now, anchored in Fanny Bay on Vancouver Island.

    Somewhere, I still have a picture I took of the Olympic, back when it was still moored at Eagle Harbour, on Bainbridge Island. The owner was going to turn it into a floating restaurant that would do leisurely sailings up and down the island, but the story goes that the state told him he would get the ferry "as is", then they turned around and ripped all the navigation gear out of it. He lobbied for years to get it back but they never gave it up, Eventually, the excuse was it was all thrown out and that they didn't even have it anymore.
    He's since sold the ferry and the new owners have moved it off the island and moored it at Ketron Island, where this video was shot.
    ...btw, the picture at the end of the video, labeled "1938" was actually shot in the mid 1970's. The boat is leaving the old Keystone dock (now called "Coupeville", even though that town is actually several miles away from that dock) on Whidbey Island.

    Surprised to see this old ferry still around and more or less still in one piece. It’s probably on its last respite before being broken up. Except for being converted into an old house boat or a pier side store, there is not much that can be done with this old boat. She is to big to haul around and to far gone to bring back into operational condition. It’s way to expensive to do that.
    She just aged out and her arrangement made it difficult and expensive to be upgraded. And now, much of her hull plating and structure would probably need to be replaced to be made seaworthy and safe.

    • @BreadEx-
      @BreadEx-  Рік тому

      It was supposed to be broken down, still had been I suppose. However the owner who is supposed to do it has neglected to do it. It seems like they store their unwanted items (stuff like the mattress piles) on the vessel.

      Built on the east coast. Sister ship to Rhodendron. At about 1:20 you can see where the sponsons were added to the hull widening it into a 4 row boat. Rhody was the first ship I worked on when I joined the Boilermakers in 1975 and she was in very poor condition then. These little punks should be prosecuted for trespass and theft. Its almost funny that one of the things they stole was a keep out sign. Guess they cant read.

    Interesting ship. I used to go urbexing many years ago - the the unwritten rules are 'take nothing but photos - leave nothing but footprints'. We NEVER took a thing from any building or vehicle we went on or in! People already think Urbexers are TROUBLE so please dont get us a worse name by stealing stuff! If we ever got stopped by the cops we showed them our cameras and they searched us - NEVER carry matches or any ignition source or you can get charged with attempted arson - NEVER carry a knife of any kind - thats even worse if caught ! They usually let us go some with a telling off not to return others to BE CAREFUL out there and BEHAVE but you get on now!! Sometimes IF they were just security guards - they would take your memory cards or tell you to delete them whilst they watched. Other times we just RAN! My camera runs TWO memory cards that record simultaneously - so I would give them ONE card and they never knew!

    When I see stuff like this, ostensibly in good exterior condition, I always think what a waste and surely it must be more economic to renovate and re-engine such vessels rather than build new from scratch. But I suppose ferry design has moved on considerably since 1938 with more advanced safety requirements. The Olympic here had a long working history until her final trip in 1994, and was mothballed in 1997. She was sold for $91 million to an entrepreneur who had unrealised plans to turn her into a tourist vessel, and now it is being slowly dismantled on the beach at Ketron Island.

      Engine looks to be toast or missing a lot of parts, would be expensive to try to fix that outdated thing. So a new engine is needed. Hull would need to be inspected for signs of fatigued or broken welds, panels or other metals and then have all the faults fixed. Electrical system also need to be inspected and without doubt is in such a shape that it would need to be modernized. And many of these works are much more time consuming and costly to do on a already built ship than just build a new one.
      If the ship was of historical importance then I would support to renovate this heap of scrap, but that is sadly all it is, a heap of scrap that should be scrapped.

      The "1938" photograph was not from 1938. In 1938, it was the MV Governor Harry W. Nice and was in service on Chesapeake Bay. it didn't come to the PNW until 1954. You may be right about the location.

    Is the engine on your boat really 8.0 HP? That must not go any faster than 15 MPH with the wind and waves at your back. I don't think it was meant to propel a boat that weight. That is a very interesting ferry boat. When was it actually abandoned/no longer maintained? That was definitely maintained way more recently than 1938. Old boats like that are sad. They are beautiful but cost so much to restore than it becomes nearly impossible.
