I'd been working with my wife on this amazing cruise liner when her name was Fedor Dostoyevskiy, and then on Astor, from 1989 till 1996, and honestly speaking these were the happiest years of our life! Farewell to Astor!
I was a crewmember on this beautiful white Lady Astor. On her last cruise from 04.12.2019 until 12.04.2020..it was my first cruise ship experience and i will never forget her. 😔😔😔😔😔😔💙
My mom was the crew operator of the Astor since October 2016, and remained on that post until she was laid off in April 2020. She had never been onboard the Astor unfortunately.
Almost 30 years after my experience working on the Caribe 1 I can still smell her and visualize so much of her. I think you grow emotionally attached because they look after your life on the sea's. This video is high quality and high sadness.
Fascinating. As a mariner of nearly 38 years experience I'm amazed to see just how much the company left onboard...so much in terms of fittings that could have been sold off separately and some costs recovered. What a huge waste.
I think the company never intented for the ship to be sold for scrap. They were ambushed by COVID19 and went bankrupt before anything could be salvaged. The auctioneers don't give a crap, they are just looking for quick cash...
Unfortunately, the family operating the ship had unpleasant memories of this ship. what happened was so sad. They disposed of it, ignoring all the remaining income from this ship.
It’s so sad to see this video. This was the ship I did my first ever cruise on. 20 years ago we sailed from Germany to Norway. It was such a nice ship.
It is very sad to see a native ship in this form, many years spent in the walls of this wonderful ship. It is especially sad to see your jobs and cabin in which more than 20 years have been spent... Everything is thrown as it was with me, I still remember how last year (March 2020) I left these walls for the last time, I don't know that I won't be back here again. Thank you for this hard and sad "tour of death"...
Eerie. Reminds me of a draining experience clearing an estate full of stuff that meant so much to the deceased, but now only carries residual value for the living. The spirit of the ship, which created so many different memories for its passengers is dyeing despite its sound condition.
As a shipping agent I have been on cruise ships like this many times. So I can imagine the good times of this ship with the passengers and crew on board. Every place is beautiful with people.. Great video, thank you.
She was! I went on a three day cruise on her a few years ago. Honest little ship, that had more character than the huge bulk people carriers that are (were) so popular.
Yeah, the most bizarre thing there are FOUR Carnivals right now in exact spot which were launched in 90s!! I have no idea why nobody bought them and make them floating hotels etc. Even Turkish companies could use them for other purposes but im guessing they are selling them for scrapping only..
I agree, but ships in general are costly to maintain. It probably cost 5-7 mil. A year just to maintain her, and sitting still, is really bad for any ship. It sad to see such a beauty be scrapped.
They could be renovated cheaply to house people who have no home. There are old hospitals and other buildings that could be fixed and used cheaper then what they charge per unit for affordable housing which is about 300 thousand per unit.
Amazing to see how much furniture and items were just left behind!!!! Would have been awesome to have seen the Engine Room and Machinery Compartments considering the state of how the rest of the ship was in...
It's strange to see anything abandoned with all the modern equipment still there and not looted like you often see. It feels like you could turn the ship back on again and start cruising on it, if it wasn't for the giant hole in the bow.
@@mericet39 that's not how it works...the second you make the another hole in the bow, the shear force of the ocean waves will not allow the water to go out rather the ship will collect more water after creating that another her hole, probably making the ship much efficient to sink 1 hour early than what it would have sunk in 2 hours or so!
Sad to see it end like this. So much character in the way it looks, it is like I am back in the 70's. All those people who where there, enjoying them selves. Like you can still see and hear them as it was.
I think I need an extended cut for this. There is something special about these places that have been abandoned so hastily and look like hundreds of people have been living there just yesterday. I would have liked to see some more backstage stuff.

I sailed on this ship in 2018, leaving Outer Harbour South Australia on a 8 night Tasmanian cruise, then returning back to Outer Harbour. I loved departing and then returning to my home port, of which I lived only 2 minutes from. Only three ships have ever left and returned to Outer Harbour, and I was on all three. I hate flying
Its interesting when you explore places that have obvious signs of life still and figuring out what's going on. It reminds me a lot of the fukhishima/hotel videos, things still in place and looks like someone could reopen tomorrow but that didn't happen.
So sad to see this wonderful cruiseliner in such a state :( Love the classic shape of the ship and I always wondered how she looked inside...I saw her once while we stopped for fuel at La Valetta before continueing towards our deployment off the Somali cost. Memories... Anyway thank you for the tour!
How is it a waste of money... She is extremely old very out dated and if Im honest she was gonna go sooner she had a long career and a good one at that all ships times come sooner or later

@@johnrauner2515 ... wouldn't that sort of go hand-in-hand with there not being the staff onboard to offload? I mean, if normally your job is to run a retail store and you've got a storeroom in addition to the storefront, and the ship is accustomed to bringing on packaged supplies for foodstuffs and other items needed to service the passengers, you'd probably have somewhat easy access to boxes to pack up the retail merch. Pack the merch, place it wherever the senior crew has designated for offload, and it gets offloaded when the vessel is in-port. After all, you're already aboard so it doesn't really cost any more to do this if you know that you're wrapping up operations permanently. If you close-up and leave without necessarily having packed the store though, then it does cost money to return to the store to pack up at least those retail items that were left on display. It's possible that merch still boxed-up in storerooms was offloaded, if there was somewhere convenient to send it after it was offloaded, but it too might be abandoned if there was nowhere good to send it. Who owns the strores/merch onboard? Is it a semi-independent franchise like many retailers, or is it owned by the cruise line itself?
I suppose "verildi" means something like "sold" - so the scrap yard makes some extra money selling those furnitures. These times must be a bonanza for them - normally only worn out ships go into scrap - but these days some relatively new ones in good maintainance shape. So expect those chairs to reappear in some bar or hotel in Turkey, Aserbaichan or some other country in the region. Not all loose in such a situation.
Wow. I have been on this vessel so many times. I was the agent for her when she came into South Africa. Its such a shame she has been scraped. She was a bit old but beautiful ship.
nice exploring the abandoned ship you walk through i think that is a safe place from zombie apocalypse just don't make noise good place to hide from zombies
2017 she was my first and only cruise ship voyage! Even though it was only a short introduction to cruising type deal, it was great summer fun and the Astor was a lovely little ship. Sad to see her scrapped.
Also seen in the first years of german series "das Traumschiff" - thank god the next old Dreamboat is still working on sea as "MS Deutschland" and in Winter "World-Odyssey. Thank you so much for that (sad) impressions.
... I was with my girlfriend 2014 for 8days on these nice ship, from Bremerhaven to England and back. I have very good memories. This ship was more then a cruise ship ...
This ship seems exceptionally well maintained! No rust on the superstructure. No tears in the upholstering. I almost expected the Whisky to be available at the bar. This is a lot af value pushed into the garbage can.
There are lots of newer ships being sold off to scrap during the lockdown, The ships cost money just sat empty offshore as the engines need to keep running so the ship has fresh air running all of the time. To stop mould growing all over the ship.

With all due respect sir! It's like you drive a BMW with 2 million miles or kilometers on board just because you like it, it's very expensive to maintain and is not that safe anymore.I understand the love you have for that kind of ship but they had their time..1987 or more is a very old ship. Your point of view is pure nostalgic and I can not agree more with you. But from the standpoint of engine maintenance and fuel consumption and to do not even mention pollution factors and rules that a cruise ship needs to respect nowadays...this is a total waste of money for a company.
Thank you for this amazing video, as an avid cruiser and lover of ships and the sea, I was stunned to see pictures, furniture beds et al remaining on the ship, the spa and gym equipment even the grand piano, why have they not been sold, a ship is a living being, I find this so sad, the Astor even resembles a ship, unlike the ugly hideous monstrosities they build now, which wild horses would not drag me to....thank you again
Out in Long Beach California they have the Queen Mary permanently dry docked and they've turned it into a hotel. They provided jobs for people and a really nice place to stay for guests. Thanks for the video! 👍
The interior rooms and the layout remind me quite a bit of Holland America's MS Prinsendam, fortunately, she is still in use but recently has been sold and renamed. I nice little ship I liked really much!
Such a shame!! That ship looks SUPER clean to go to scrappers. I guess it would have cost too much to bring it up to code and speed. I have cruised 14 times and enjoy smaller (>1000 passengers) and would have cruised on this ship!

These times must be a bonanza for them - normally only worn out ships go into scrap - but these days some relatively new ones in good maintainance shape. So expect those chairs to reappear in some bar or hotel in Turkey, Aserbaichan or some other country in the region. Not all loose in such a situation.
@@becconvideo Good catch! According to Google Translator, "verildi" in Turkish = "was given" in English.
This is like top rated hotel roomsx just can be fitted somewhere. Doesn't deserve to be scrapped
You were given an 'hour' to explore the ship....WOW .... Really ,Really impressed how much you did in such little time .... Brilliant :-)
The Rich sure know how to destroy things and think nothing of it. Great looking ship.
How sad a beautiful lady like this is being scrapped!
I am sad when i watch such video. Such a great ship. Goodbye Astor RIP
What a shame,as a long time cruiser I really appreciate smaller ships, the new ones are just to big
2017 she was my first and only cruise ship voyage! Even though it was only a short introduction to cruising type deal, it was great summer fun and the Astor was a lovely little ship. Sad to see her scrapped.
You're right, the new ones just look like buildings on hulls...
True. The MS Albatros is now being scrapped, too.
Thanks for this short tour and the insights. I had the hope to the last minute, that we get a glimpse to the kitchen.
I went here 5 months ago and hi from Turkey👋🏻🇹🇷🇹🇷
Also seen in the first years of german series "das Traumschiff" - thank god the next old Dreamboat is still working on sea as "MS Deutschland" and in Winter "World-Odyssey. Thank you so much for that (sad) impressions.
Welcome to Turkey guys, enjoy the weekend curfew :)
... I was with my girlfriend 2014 for 8days on these nice ship, from Bremerhaven to England and back. I have very good memories. This ship was more then a cruise ship ...
Saw her passing the Kiel Canal every now and then. Can't believe she's gone...
Thank you for documenting this piece of history.
the engine room also is a must see
Very sad to see, I sailed from Southampton to Iceland and Canada on this ship in 1987 when I was 12, good memories
It seems she was really well taken care of by the last owners. She looks to be in great condition, such a shame scrapping her.
It was a shame indeed!
It was said, the ship was refitted for $19 million before, but then the virus hit the cruise ship industry, so it was retired, sold off for scrap.
They used to send Astor to drydock every year before sailing to Australia for the summer season
This ship seems exceptionally well maintained! No rust on the superstructure. No tears in the upholstering. I almost expected the Whisky to be available at the bar. This is a lot af value pushed into the garbage can.
Yup, thanks covid for it😦🙁 thanks for checking out!
Why such a beautiful and modern ship in very good condition go scrapped ?? What a shame ... that’s a beautiful princess 😥😥😥
There are lots of newer ships being sold off to scrap during the lockdown, The ships cost money just sat empty offshore as the engines need to keep running so the ship has fresh air running all of the time. To stop mould growing all over the ship.
@@scottkirkland6139: Totally crazy world 🌎 now 😥
this ship isnt modern and in good condition at all.
@@jac4423: It is a good Cruise Ship with all comfort a human needs ... good for the North Route (Sweden, Danmark etc) as Explorer or Expedition-Ship for special tourists. I for me don’t need the newest luxury things and exterior balcony ... I will enjoy pure cruise feeling and not like in a swimming town on the Ozean 🌊
WOW!!! good video. Incredible walk on the abandoned ship!!!
This video is really sad! Here i spent five years of my life as part of the crew.
Well everything ends...
Thanks! Just noticed your comment. I just published a new episode of the historical MV Astoria😊Could explore all passengers and crew decks
nice, but i'm missing the kitchen and engine room..
maybe next time in another ship
He only had 1 hour to explore as said on 2:11
@@GTAVince i know, but i think the kitchen and engine room is more interesting than de sleeping quarters.
@@be4tnl Tja ik denk dat hij snel een keuze moest maken of wellicht helemaal niet in de machinekamer mocht komen :P
IF you want to see the engine room check out this episode (and many others) ua-cam.com/video/TsZqdXJsRk8/v-deo.html
@@GTAVince ja je moet wat als je maar een uurtje mag rondlopen
How sad! (Thanks for making the view look level to us. Must have been a pain walking all of that ship with that list, especially the stairs.)
Out in Long Beach California they have the Queen Mary permanently dry docked and they've turned it into a hotel. They provided jobs for people and a really nice place to stay for guests. Thanks for the video! 👍
Need more than entire day to visit ship like this... Good job ! And thanks for french subtitles (really good quality of translation).
We are waiting for you in Romania as well.
The interior rooms and the layout remind me quite a bit of Holland America's MS Prinsendam, fortunately, she is still in use but recently has been sold and renamed. I nice little ship I liked really much!
A great video for a great ship !
Now the MS Astor has arrived at the last port.
Wasn`t that the "Traumschiff" in the german ZDF series 1983/84 ?
right
"Traumschiff" was Saga Pearl 2. The older and little sister of MS ASTOR
No.. the "Traumschiff" was another Astor...
No that was the 1981 built Astor(Arkona, Astoria, Saga Pearl 2, Quest For Adventure & Pearl 2) this Astor was built in 1987
So beautiful... that Lady died way too soon. RIP.
Nice video, thanks.
It has a magical atmosphere there, but I wouldn't want to be on board alone at night 😹 when it's turning into a ghost ship
It looks like the passengers just dissapeared one morning.
@@scottkirkland6139 I agree
Amazing looks like people just walked off the ship yesterday ... could spend days and days going thru all the rooms
where is engine room ? i want to see it
Such a shame!! That ship looks SUPER clean to go to scrappers. I guess it would have cost too much to bring it up to code and speed. I have cruised 14 times and enjoy smaller (>1000 passengers) and would have cruised on this ship!
Welcome to our country, adventure fans! I am already sure the video is perfect
There will be multiple episodes shot in Turkey :)
I was on this ship as a child. I won't forget as I watched a movie in the cabin and at the most exciting moment, the satelite connection was lost... way above the arctic circle :)
Top Video Guys👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
As a young guy I made a wonderful cruise aboard this magnificent ship. Too sad to see how many parts of the interior are destroyed and vandalized.
