- Eggshell calcium is a money-saving way to get extra calcium in your diet.
* Please consult a doctor before taking supplements such as powdered eggshells.
RECIPE:
Eggshell Calcium
Makes about 1/2 cup
Ingredients:
12 eggshells
Equipment:
Medium saucepan
Baking sheet
Coffee or spice grinder, or a Vitamix blender
Instructions
Place the eggshells in a medium saucepan. Cover them with water. Bring to a boil, skimming off any foam that appears. Cook for 15 minutes to sterilize the eggshells.
Preheat the oven to 225 degrees F. On a baking sheet, spread the shells in an even layer. Bake them for 20 minutes. This helps to dry them out.
Remove the eggshells from the oven and let them cool completely, Transfer the eggshells to a coffee grinder, spice grinder or Vitamix blender. Grind the shells into a fine powder. Transfer the eggshell powder to a glass jar and cover tightly with a lid. Store in a cool, dry place for up to one month. You can date the jar to keep track of when it expires.
NOTE: I don’t go through eggs too quickly, so I rinse them and store in a container in my freezer until I have a dozen or so. If you use eggs more quickly you can store the fresh eggshells in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

#eggshellcalcium
wash a dozen eggshells, peel out the membrane on the inside and then bake at 200 degrees for 20 or so minutes minutes and from there blend or just crack them into fine peices and mix the dozen eggshells with 4 to 8 ounces of vinegar and let it sit for at least 24 hours so the eggshells dissolve and you can dilute the mixture and water plants with it or add a teaspoon to a glass of water to drink it
Thanks for sharing!
I thought the membrane was supposed to have alot of nutrition
do we still need to take vitamin D? Calcium needs Vitamin D for absorption.
The membrane has amazing nutrients
keep the membrane :O)
Forefront health probably has the only decent eggshell calcium without additives but it's getting expensive. This would save a lot of money. Thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome. Great to hear that you found it helpful.
I must try this as soon as possible here in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, East Africa. Thank you very much for this knowledge.
Enjoy! You’re welcome.
I did it for long time actually I do it right now while watching you this is my source of calcium I powder it manually then I add for soup or milk for my grandkids
That’s great!
Hi how are you? Thank you so much. I came across a video showing how to use egg shells to scrub pots and also find out I could use it for calcium intake. I never knew anything about this. I’ve never heard anyone talked about using eggshells for calcium intake and I search UA-cam and came across your video I will definitely be doing this I do buy farm raised eggs so I know I’ll be getting the maximum calcium intake that I need from those shells. Thank you so much for your video. I appreciate it. God bless you and keep them coming, have a blessed day❤
You’re welcome and thanks for the kind words. I’m glad you got value from the video. God bless you too!
Eggcelent info 😊
Ha thanks!
If you use a plastic blender the eggshell will sandblast the plastic and you will be eating plastic calcium mix.
I suggest using glass or stainless steel.
Good point, thank you.
Vitamix has a stainless
@@deborahhamilton7805 Isn't the jug made of plastic?
That’s great to know. I was not aware that they had come out with that. Looks like a really good product, especially for this purpose. Thanks for the tip!
@BelleAmit from what I can tell on Amazon it looks to be all stainless steel. amzn.to/3PqvgIy
Have you heard of salvaging the eggshell membrane? I believe you called it scum that floats to the top of the pan during boiling. The eggshell membrane has many medicinal purposes as well. From gut and Liver health, to being an excellent inflammation fighter. Save the eggshell membrane as well. 👍🏻
Yes, this is a great point. I’ll have to make a sequel to this video to share that as others have pointed out the same thing. Thank you.
Thank you Cristine !
You are so welcome!
Thank you for sharing. Great way to get Calcium in to my diet.
You are so welcome!
Great DIY method to save money and get bioavailable calcium; which I need. Thanks very much!
Glad to hear you enjoyed it. You’re welcome!
So glad you made this video, this looks easy and I have A Vitamix grinder. I am going to use your recipe and add it to my morning coffee. I have osteoporosis so this should be a great addition to make my mineral goals. Thanks ❤
Wonderful!
Strength training helps that.
This is fascinating. Thank you! 🤗
So glad to hear that you enjoyed it! You’re welcome.
Ty. I also take Natto it’s extremely high in Vitamin K. it’s very hard to get sufficient vitamin K in our diet vitamin K is very necessary for her to use calcium. We need to be getting calcium vitamin D, and vitamin K calcium absorption. I ordered my NATO from a company called Rhapsody had a Vermont they shipped by the case and it can be frozen or you can make your own using it as a starter. My kids eat it with rice with scallions, but I can’t take the texture, so I just take spoonful and swallow it like supplements I usually eat a fourth of a container a day also full of soy so flavins for estrogen because it’s fermented, it’s an extremely safe form of soy.
That’s great. Thanks for sharing this. Yes, we definitely need a balance of calcium, vitamin D and vitamin K. Natto whipped with scallions, soy sauce and mustard is yummy. But many can’t get past the texture.
Give me more info on this please. Are natto 🫘 beans? High in Vitamin K?
Yes, natto beans are a great source of K2. Just prepare yourself if you haven’t tried them before. They do have a very unique texture and flavor which people seem to either love or hate.
thank you very much it is very helpful for students 😊🙏
You’re welcome. Glad to hear that.
Thanks for such clear instructions!
You’re welcome! Thanks for the nice comment. 😊
I loved your recipe. Thank you so much..
That’s great to hear. You’re welcome.
Hi! Great video! For how long can the ground powder be stored at room temperature?
Hi! Thanks and I’m glad you enjoyed it. When stored at room temperature in a cool dark place, it should keep up to a few months.
Isn't boiling them redundant since the oven is hotter than boiling water? Good for getting rid of gunk I guess. I'm going to start experimenting with eggshells - thank you!
It might seem redundant but, as you mentioned, the boiling gets rid of the gunk and the oven thoroughly dries them before grinding.
Amazing idea thank you very much.
Thanks so much and I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for the video.❤❤
You're welcome 😊
Can you use a Ninja blender. Also can you grind them without baking them. Maybe just boil them a little longer. Would that work?
Yes, any high-powered blender will work well. The idea behind baking them is to thoroughly dry them out and make them crisp, to more easily blend them. I always follow this two-step method.
I followed someone else's directions and baked for ten mins at 400 and the edges browned/burnt. Can I still use those bits? I will follow your instructions next time.
I wouldn’t use any burnt ones. Ok, I hope the next batch goes better.
Thanks for answering cheers.@@ChristinesNaturalKitchen
What's the point of boiling to sterilise it, the oven won't sterilise it?
It's literally a higher temperature.
Also in other video it has been mentioned that eggshells are very abrasive and when used in plastic blenders, some microplastic particle can be produced which is obviously unhealthy.
Also that thin skin layer on the inside of the eggshell apparently also has some good stuff in it, and so washing egg before cracking to get rid of the bacteria, and after cracking no washing else it will be removed.
Thank you for all of these insightful points you make. Regarding boiling to sterilize it the idea is that impurities will be washed away into the water, which is slightly different than when just baking them. I agree with you about plastic blenders so ideally a glass blender would be used.
@@ChristinesNaturalKitchen I've read that the calcium leaches into the water when eggs are boiled.
Nice video. What’s the best way to keep them for the longest time without going bad?
Do you mean once it’s already made or preserving the eggshells before preparing them into the powder? If you mean the prepared eggshell calcium powder, I like to store it in a glass jar with a tight fitting lid. Sometimes I save one of those little packets from vitamin bottles to put inside to keep it fresher even longer. I then store it in a cool dark place like a kitchen cabinet out of the sunlight. If you’re referring to the eggshells I store those in the freezer until I have enough of them to make the powder.
🙏🏻🌹🙏🏻 I definitely will make my own calcium!
That’s great to hear!
Why boil the eggs before putting them in the oven? Do they need to be cooked at all?
I like to do this to cook off some of the residue inside the shells.
Thank you.
You're welcome!
I'm curious regarding the purpose of boiling the eggshells for 12 minutes. Cleaning the eggshells makes sense, but it seems to me that setting the oven to 225 will both dry them out and sterilize them in the same step.
The boiling will help to release any impurities into the water rather than baking them onto the shells.
Hi! Do you recommend storing in the fridge or just on the counter/in pantry?
Hi! I recommend storing it in a cool, dry place like the counter or pantry for up to one month. No fridge needed. Just make sure it’s completely cool before sealing in a glass jar to avoid any moisture forming.
I read if you use vinegar on the powder it is more effective? Can you explain? Should it be done?
I haven’t heard that before and have not tried it so I can’t comment on that one.
It is a mixure of carbonate and hydroxyapatite. Not just calcium
Thank you.
Thank you 💓
You're welcome 😊
Great powder to add into homemade toothpaste. Never hurts to add a little of the powder to your pets food also.
I haven’t tried that with toothpaste. I’m not sure about the abrasiveness on tooth enamel. Great idea about pet food in small amounts.
Safe the boiled water from eggs as well as any veggies for watering/feeding your veggies garden🌱🍎🥦
Great tip!
Not sure why everyone is boiling them and tossing all the nutrients in the water.
Would it be ok to just dry them in the oven n simultaneously heat n kill all the germs? No boiling?? 🤔
At the moment my mother does not have any type of disposal, they have broken. But since you recommend turning the eggshells into powder and instead of an oven I have a microwave, I can also put the Shells there? And how long? Please help me, this is important to me, I exercise and I want to add this eggshell calcium.
I’ve never tried using a microwave but I’m not sure if that would have the same result. The aim is to dry them out thoroughly. What about an electric dehydrator instead?
Check Your Math...Each gram of eggshells provides between 380-400mg of calcium. A teaspoon hold @ 5 grams. 5 grams = 5000 mg The Maximum amount of calcium needed by adults is 2000 mg and too much calcium can be bad for your health. The average amount needed by adults is @ 1000 grams per day. About 1/4 tsp per day would be about right by my math.
Thanks for this information.
@@annetnawoova9226 You're welcome and here is a little more. Do Not peel out or rinse out the membrane after removing the egg from the shell as posted by others. The membrane is full of Collagen and other Proteins plus more beneficial Nutrients. Simply clean the egg shells with vinegar / water or other cleaning methods, then use the eggs and freeze the shells. After a couple of days in the freezer, I crush the shells, keep them in a large Glad bag back in the freezer. I use most of them in my homemade broth and grind some into a very fine powder in my Blendtec, ( super fine and no tamping needed ) to be added to drinks or recipes.
may I know what research can prove this claim? I just need it for reference for my research topic, thank you😊
@@mauiclintferrer3713My naturopath told me this about the membranes as well. Google it.
Thank you I love 😍 this ❤ bye 👋
You’re welcome, enjoy!
thanks alot
You’re welcome.
What if I've already boil them for 12 minutes because I eat boiled eggs so I don't need to boil again? Can I just grind have my calcium?
Yes in that case you could probably skip boiling them, but could still bake them to dry them out and make it easier to grind them up. The baking removes the moisture so the ground powder can be stored at room temperature for a bit.
Wow 🎉
Enjoy!
Can l use egg shells that are a year old? I’ve been saving them to make scales for a large encaustic dragon, but can’t seem to find the time to do it, and l don’t want to waste the shells. Thank you
You should be ok but I wouldn’t save them any longer. Be sure to do the boiling and baking steps to kill any potential bacteria.
after grinding it into fine powder and puting it inside a glass jar, it can only be store for a month?
If it’s kept in a really dry, dark and cool place it may stay a little longer. I just recommend a month to be on the safe side.
What about the ink from the stamp on the eggs if they come from the idustry?
If it’s possible to purchase eggs from a farm or somewhere where they wouldn’t have that stamp that would be necessary as you don’t want to ingest that.
I ground it, but it did not reach the level of flour. It became like small grains of sand. Can I eat it or grind it to a level where it resembles flour?
What did you use to grind it? It should be as fine as possible. Also, when consuming it it helps to either put it into capsules or to mix it in with juice or a little applesauce.
coffee grinder and Do you mean the capsules that look like medicine but are empty? @@ChristinesNaturalKitchen
Yes, I mean those empty capsules used for medicine and supplements.
@@ChristinesNaturalKitchen I brought it and packed it and every day I take one capsule even though it tastes disgusting🗿
do u peel that thin membrane from the eggs at any point or just leave?...tx
I don’t specifically peel it. Perhaps some of it gets removed in the boiling step.
@@ChristinesNaturalKitchen thank u...thank u...cant wait to do this..😎
Why boil and bake? What's the function of those procedures?
Sterilization and thorough drying before blending.
Boil them to prevent the chemicals in egg shell to ….to bake to dry them….to make powder
Is it ok if I leave the membrane?
Yes, as long as the eggshells are properly sterilized by boiling.
If you do this washing for all shells, makes a lot of water. Do the water in the sinck and drop the eggshells in it. A very bit of salt makes all durt comes off. Take them out dry them in the oven and grind them. You use way to much water in the video.
Thanks for the tip.
Hi maam can children under 2yrs can consume eggshell powder
No, I don't recommend that. I would consult your pediatrician with any nutrition-related questions or suggestions.
Is this safe for kidney stone
I don’t know. I recommend checking with your doctor.
it's self explanatory
Yes thanks
Arteries ?
There’s mixed information about the effect of supplemental calcium on arteries. It is an option to try to get your calcium just from calcium-rich foods like dairy products and dark leafy greens if you have this concern.
What about boil egg shells
Yes, I recommend boiling the eggshells but then also baking them to get them dry and crispy to grind into the eggshell powder.
Is it fully absorbable
I can’t really say.
not Ca - it's Mg that's best - you're mislead
Why do you wash the egg shells - and why do you promote the wasting of so much water by showing that you wash each half separately? Here in South Africa eggs are NEVER washed before we buy them and I personally make a hole in each end, suck the raw egg out and swallow it when in a hurry.
Thank you for making this important point regarding conservation of water. I will strive to conserve more.
@@4opstick I live in South Africa, which has descended to the state of a third world country ever since 1994. Our "'infrastructure" is so poorly managed and maintained that we often go without electricity and water for DAYS on end, so we cannot afford to waste a single drop. Of course YOU don't give a continental hoot about OTHER people, so you waste as much as you want. Until one day, when there simply IS no more clean water - and you have to ask ME how to purify and reuse water you have used before.
So interesting! I've been throwing egg shells into my veggie scraps bag for broth but making this powder is so much better. I'll sneak a teaspoon or two into oatmeal, sweet potato chocolate pudding, stews, soup, anything. Have you detected a taste from the shells? Thanks so much for this. Also thanks for teaching me that cauliflower makes a great sauce. I'll comment directly there, too. Here's what I'm referring to, which I'd add a teaspoon to this, too. ua-cam.com/video/U11QM2TLVHQ/v-deo.html
Hi Marge, Thank you! So happy you enjoyed it. Sounds like you have found some fun ways to sneak your egg shells into your menus. I take mine in a little juice or applesauce so I do detect a slight taste.
You’re so welcome about the cauliflower sauce! I’m glad you liked that one too. Thanks again for your comment and support.
