The reason why Chicago won the best picture is that it was describing how society was and still is. It's about getting away with murder, the corrupt justice system, and how the media affects it. Society is fascinated with criminals, and also another note is how women were having more power, how abused they were and as revenge, they killed their spouses/partners. The performances, the costumes, the music, the choreography. It's a gorgeous movie.

@@yoshimanmariokart4572 I was praising the artists that worked on that movie, not that producer who should not be named. It's a shame though that a great movie like this is associated with him. In my mind, Richard Gere produced it.

this is my own opinion. chicago was thought to be virtually un-filmable for decades. then with the ingenious concept of placing the musical numbers in a fantasy world inside roxie's head, this stage piece became a film. unlike all of the musicals that have won best picture especially my fair lady, chicago transformed in a film, a cinematic experience. that's why it was nominated and it's why it deserved to win.

I'm going to one day see Chicago on stage where the legacy began 4 decades ago. Chicago deserved the win. My personal favorite films were The Hours and The Pianist, but I understand why Chicago won. First, it is an amazing black comedy/musical, secondly the performances were fantastic and it is a project that couldn't have been filmed for decades. And it has endless re-watch value. Maybe I could’ve gotten a nomination if there were more nominations allowed but at the time since only five were allowed it had to be singled out even though it would’ve probably still got a nomination but I don’t think it would’ve and it would’ve been a joke

Thanks! That's the point. The Hours was perfect, pure emotion with perfect dialogues. " I don't think two people could have been happier than we have been", "Someone has to die in order that the rest of us should value life more" are just epic sentences that are stuck in my memory. Even ordinary quotes like "I'm gonna make a pie" or "I'll buy the flowers by myself" are unforguettable because they are full of emotion. The scenes, the music, the performances...it's pure perfection.

I don't get why many people regard Chicago one of the worst Best Picture films. It's not like it was unexpected like when Crash won. Chicago won the Directors Guild of America award and the actors were winning at the golden globes, SAG and BAFTAs. It's a sophistically made film. The cutting back-and-forth from reality to Roxie's musical fantasies is a classic example of editing. The songs are wonderfully integrated into the courtroom drama. Chicago deserved to win as much as the other nominees

Yeah, The Pianist is an important movie and a very moving one, but I still prefer Chicago and also The Hours.

Well, I think you're looking at the movies in terms of message, meaning and story and while the movies you mentioned seem to mean more as cultural pieces the award for Best Picture goes to the movie that had the highest achievement in film making which then ties in sound and cinematography and score and acting and all the technical aspects of the film. Chicago was the best at combining these things but also had a filming concept that successfully translated an "un-filmable" musical into a hit

I remember watching this and Chicago winning all these Oscars. Then Dustin Hoffman introduced The Pianist, then showed a clip.
Hoffmans words about the film were so intense, so striking, that when the cameras cut to people in the crowd, you could see in their eyes the regret for not voting The Pianist Best Picture.
Chicago was entertaining, but The Pianist is a film people still talk about, that has still stuck with audiences, for almost a decade now. THAT'S best picture quality.

Chicago has absolutely left its mark in cinema history and people also still recognize its legacy. It is thematically both powerful and relevant. Just because it delivers its message through irony and satire doesn’t mean it’s just a fun “entertaining” film. Both The Pianist and Chicago are brilliant.

The Hours= Pure amazement. Awesome writing, acting and it's Stephen Daldry. That man is incredible.
The Pianist= Best film by far. Adrien Brody is mind-blowing, direction deserved the Oscar, just a near perfect masterpiece.
    Chicago= So overrated it's a crime.

Maybe Chicago wasn't the best movie that year - but it was certainly the most unique film - the other contenders were a big epic fantasy, a holocaust piece, and a historical crime drama.
Chicago, on the other hand, was a very biting satire of show business, the justice system, the media, and public morality. You don't see many movies like that. It's kinda Brechtian.
So it might not've deserved the win, but I think it gets a lot of undue scorn.

Chicago deserved the win because that is how the Academy voted! I love Chicago, and it is my personal winner among the nominees. Putting a musical usually has a simple set and making it a great motion picture is amazing!

Chicago was indeed a good film but "The Two Towers" and "The Pianist" are far superior to it.
For these two movies, if I had to choose I would choose "The Pianist" as best picture.
When I first saw "The Pianist" I was younger and the movie scared me, but now that I'm older that's what made this movie amazing, The acting, directing, everything about this movie was far superior than any other movie that year. No doubt about it, "The Pianist" should've won.
