Palin's delivery in this scene was absolutely incredible.
I never heard anybody say the word friend, more English than Michael said in this scene...
The British comedy went right over the head of this chick watching the clip. She kept frowning in confusion trying to make sense of it. That's the whole point. It's funny because it makes no sense which she didn't get.
@@raccuia1 It makes a lot of sense, you wascally wabbit. He's talking about people who have non-standard names.
@@gbreslin6635 I was talking about the girl watching the clip.
All good Joseph. I just felt that it does make sense, in a comedic way. It's not obvious enough for what she's used to perhaps :)
I died at "Wait till Biggus Dickus hears about this." And then your "He has a happy wife." 😂
😅😅🤪
When she knows she knows you know, dirty girl!.
Didn't say anything about a happy wife! He said "he has a wife, you know".
@@ChrisAndCats after "he has a wife you know" she said (the person reacting) "a very happy one"
Literally the single funniest bit of comedy ever written. The fact the laughs were genuine as they weren't scripted made it 10000x better
OMG YES - Life of Brian is an absolute must watch, comedy gold - and yes, it is a separate film. Another bit which'd be good as an individual clip is "You're all individuals."
P.S: Holy Grail also v good, doesn't matter which order you watch them in.
I'm not.

There was a TV show in england called "Monty Python's Flying Circus". It ran for four series (45 episodes). The main people (what we now call Monty Python) were John CLeese, Graham Chapman, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam. Their first film was called "And Now For Something Completley Different" (1971) which was a collection of sketches from the TV show re shot for the big screen. Then there was "Monty Python and The Holy Grail" (1975), then "Monty Python's Life Of Brian" (1979), "Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl" (1982) which was a film of a live show and then "The Meaning Of Life" (1983). Various members of the Pythons have been involved in other films and some have directed other films (A Fish Called Wanda (1988), Brazil (1985), Time Bandits (1981), Jabberwocky (1977), The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988) to name a few). The nearest thing in America to Flying Circus was probably "Rowan and Martin's Laugh In".
As a kid I grew up watching Monty Python on the TV and the next day at school we would copy the sketches.
...yeah, what HE(David) said
You forgot Yellowbeard (1983) Graham Chapman, John Cleese and Eric Idle
@@dannyadams4765 I have probably missed quite a few, I only listed some as examples.
Or SNL (1975), which is sketch comedy based on Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969).
I love how you can see the actors cracking up during this scene. 😂😂
My favourite line of the biggus dickus bit is when Pilate says because of his speech impediment not able to pronounce the letter "R" so he always says "W" instead therefore instead of "Your father was a Roman" he then says "Your father was a Woman"
Thank you, you restore my faith in humanity. I was waiting for the “how inappropriate” moment. To hear you laugh at something that’s meant to be laughed at and not called out for being insensitive or rude is a change from what we usually see. Even your commenters get it. The Pythons changed the way sketch comedy was presented on television.
I am a firm believer that in the name of comedy and if intentions are purely for comedy, then anything goes. You either find it funny or you don't. 🤪🤷🏻♀️
Eh? Never once have I heard people do anything but laugh their ass off at this.
You have to watch the whole movie. Personally I think it’s their best and it only gets more relevant as the years go by. Pure comic genius
Life of Brian is the superior movie, but Holy Grail is a cultural icon.
The guards didn't know the skit or the lines, they were just told to try and keep a straight face and not laugh. The scene is pure gold
The Meaning of Life is never reacted too and I love that one.
@@arifeannor9573 that's another good one
Love them both, but Holy Grail is the better movie.
@@Cosmo-Kramer it's nowhere near the same quality.
@@drdassler Not in production value, but that aside, it's a better movie.
Iconic movie along with Holy Grail. The scene in this one where he has to paint the wall with graffiti is great too and some ofthe scens from Holy Grail such as the Black Knight and the 'what is your quest' scene are just classics.
Tis' just a scratch! 😂😂
@@MandyCaneLane Haha, you've seen it. :)
And the man who wants to have babies "where is it going to gestate, in a box ?".
Monty Python's Flying Circus was the name of a sketch show starring a group of British comedians. The movies are a spin-off with the same cast. You should react to the movies, Holy Grail is the first one, Life of Brian is the second.
And the often forgotten Monty Python's The Meaning of Life
The first Monty Python film was called "And Now For Something Completely Different" which was just a re filming of several short sketches for the big screen.
Two greatest comedies of all time - "Life of Brian" and "THe Holy Grail". Then check out their skits from the flying circus, their third move "The Meaning of Life". Greatest comedy group of all time, pure genius.
"always look on the briiiight side of DEATH!"
It's Life of Bwian, 348. DO keep up !
The actors playing the soldiers weren't given the full script before hand but were told if they broke out laughing too soon, they wouldn't get paid.
The writing and style of other films by some of the Python team such as The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Brazil and Absolutely Anything as three examples are wildly 'out there' and great fun.
Monty Python is actually a comedy whole crew. They made several stage and TV series and several movies: The Holy Grail, Life of Brian, The Meaning of Life, And Now For Something Completely Different. All worth a watch though Life of Brian is the most complete feeling with a full story running throughout. The best gags are probably those in The Holy Grail but the end is a cop out.
Honestly, it took me a while to realize the ending of Holy Grail was very literally a “cop out” and that was the joke.
My father loved Monty Python, God rest his soul. He got me into it when I was a teen, the first movie I saw from them was the holy grail. Life of Brian is pure genius to, you need to watch both.
You must watch Monty Python & the holy grail and Monty Python life of Brian. brilliant movies
This is the first reactor who equated biggus dikkus with happy wife.
I can't unhear it now.
You're welcome 😌
This film along with Holy Grail are sooo good. Id gladly join patreon to see you watch the full films. I'd hold back on anything else tied to these films.
Yeah, I want to watch them so not going to spoil anything else!
@@MandyCaneLane Seconded. Certain reacts are best experienced in their entirety. The Monty Python films fit that description. It's almost a shame to react publicly to them, as they're great watches in their own right and might lose something in you being 'on' for an audience (as much as it's enjoyable to have your in-the-moment thoughts). Maybe do 'Holy Grail' one way, and 'Life of Brian' the other?
'Grail' might be my personal fave of the two, but 'Brian' has admittedly a bit more meat to it (bigger budget and notoriety, I think).
Monty Python was a British comedy troupe. Great stuff.
What's really weird, the guy in the white did an interview with Karl, because he's a famous travel documentary maker. You can find it if you search "Karl Pilkington meets Michael Palin (COMPLETE)".
This entire movie is a timeless masterpiece. It's absolutely silly and hilarious, but it also digs into legitimately serious issues like religious zealotry and sexuality. Monty Python has a lot of skits that were simply absurd and silly, but they were and still are also the world champions in weaving the occasional serious and legitimate theme into their silliness.
Holy Grail is probably more on the pure silliness side of their comedy, and don't expect a real "plot", but holy shit is it funny. The Meaning of Life then again has a lot more serious themes in it. It's by far the weakest of the three Monty Python movies, but still better than 95% of any comedy you'll ever see.
'Happy Wife? no further comment needed Mandy.🤣the stuff you seemed to miss was just basically making fun of his not being able to pronounce his 'Rs' - fair game back in the day.
Life of Brian still one of the best comedy films ever.
In my opinion it's a level above the Holy Grail.
O I don't know that indiana Jones film took some beating, especially when trying to obtain the holy grail.
I heard the extras had been instructed by the director to just stand there and not laugh. Because he didn’t want the extras detract from the scene. And in this particular take, the two main actors had a bet going on that they could get the extras to break character.
There are many more good Monty Python sketches. Their films are also good.
Monty python was a comedy troupe which had a BBC tv show in the sixties, then started doing movies. They had a huge following among college students......
There is a point where Michael Palin accidentally does smirk: just as he says “Dickus” at the guard to whom he asks if he finds it “wisible” (risible). Luckily when he turns his head towards camera just after this he manages to regain his composure.
Fun Fact: At around 5:37, the hysterical laughing you hear in the background is coming from the cameraman, followed shortly after by the rest of the crew, because he lost it, and as a result, broke the extras' resolve altogether.
Lmao! Love it!
Monty Python is a comedy group. They started with a comedy show in the 60s and made a few movies. When you see a movie titled Monty Python, it just means they share the same actors.
Mandy Cane lane comedy movie reactions has to become a thing. So many potential options 3x Python movies, the Rutles, Airplane, Naked Gun, the Cornetto trilogy, Paul, would be great for starters………… you already have me laughing at you laughing at the clips, I think a whole movie could brighten a month let alone a day.
I am very interested, but have to figure out how to do it right! 😅😅
Hot fuzz is a great movie
@@sticklebacksummer
The World's End is always a bit weird for me because it was mostly shot in my home town, the disco is actually the local cinema which still looks like in the movie because they refused to give the external stuff fitted by the film crew back.
The movie, Life of Brian, was financed by George Harrison from The Beatles he remortgaged his house because he wanted to see the film himself. He makes a brief cameo appearance for a few seconds in a crowded street scene.
In case nobody else has mentioned: "Monty Python" is the name of the comedy troupe, first famous for the television series "Monty Python's Flying Circus" (definitely worth a watch). They'd done a few different movies, mostly films consisting of vignettes. Their movies "Monty Python's The Life of Brian" and "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" take on a more narrative, though still madcap format. Both require a few rewatches because they have so much going on in the background (particularly "Holy Grail"--so much detail that you can blink and miss, including during the opening credits!).
ABSOLUTELY watch Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
This is from another Monty Pytho movie The Life of Brian.
I Don't know if this has been said by anyone in a previous comment, but that scene is ICONIC for several reasons. Not just Michael Palin's terrible Roman accent and his pronunciation of the letter 'R' which is said as a 'W'.
But the whole 'Biggus Dickus' part was adlibbed on the spot by Michael Palin. The Reactions of the soldiers had been real, they'd been told not to laugh at anything as it was the most serious part of the movie. When he picked on a soldier who sucked in his cheeks to avoid laughing, it was actually happening as you saw it in the movie.
@4:50 Michael Palin (Pontius Pilate) actually starts laughing for real.
MONTY PYTHON was a TV series called Monty Python's Flying Circus. They also made three films. Terry Gilliam was a member. He went on to be a pretty famous director. Both John Cleese and Michael Palin went on to do A Fish Called Wanda. Kohm was also Q in a few of the Bond films.
There’s only one Monty Python, and they do several parody movies. The definition of Monty Python goes well with the name Biggus Dickus
You have to watch it without subtitles and more than once, because you laugh more when you understand the dynamics of the scene, even for me the best...
A bunch of ex-public school (Oxford, Cambridge footlights Alfresco, blah, blah) boys having a jolly good time in tv comedies when those qualifications were pretty much all you neeed here in England in the 1960s/70s. They make the achievements of people like Mel Brooks and David Jason seem superhuman. Rant over.
Monty Python was the given name of the comedy team of John Cleese.. Graham Chapman.. Eric Idle.. Terry Jones.. Michael Palin. . And Terry Gilliam.. They did a two season series TV in 1969 to 70 called monty pythons flying circus. 13 episodes I think.... They made 4 official films as a group.. And now for something completely different.. Monty python and the Holy Grail.. Monty Pythons Life of Brian.. And Monty Pythons The Meaning of Life... Plus various other movies produced by Gilliam like The Time Bandits.. Jaberwocky.. Baron Von Munchausen etc all of which starred a few of the python team.. There were spin off TV shows like Rutland weekend television with Eric Idle.. Ripping Yarns with Michael Palin plus other stuff like Eric Idle in a piss take documentary of the Beatles called the Rutles.
All good stuff and holds it's place in the history of comedy in film and TV
The biggest joke you missed is that Pontius Pilate has a speech impediment. He says "Woeman" instead of Roman and "fwo" him to the floor instead of throw him to the floor. This is important to know for later in the movie.
I think M.Palin needed to emphasize it bit more.
A lot of reactors miss the whole point of the pontius joke. I think python is very unique to us brits.
WELEASE WODEWICK! HE'S A WOBBER! AND A WAPIST! AND A PICKPOCKET!
@@coot1925 Is she American? because i remember her saying she's in Argentina, but she sounds to me like she grew up in America. Here in Australia, we get British humour about as well as brits obviously do, but i've met many americans confused by british humour or the wit completely goes over their head.
@@brandonmcgregor9912 Some of it is "subtle", mr B.
I've watched a lot of reactions to this clip, and I must admit I've never heard the 'a very happy one' line in response to Biggus Dickus' wife! Well done Mandy
😎🤪
Just about the only relevant context you get in the movie for that scene is that Brian is told by his mother that his father is in fact, Naughtius Maximus from the Jerusalem Garrison. It's all just silly, like you can expect from Monty Python.
There are 3 movies if i recall: The Life of Brian (this clip), The Holy Grail (the one where you probs know the clips but should still watch
!) and The Meaning of Life.
Yes, this is from their second movie Life of Brian.
Monty Python is the name of the group. I wish I was your neighbour, I'll be glad to watch all their movies with you and laugh our asses off. ( I'm from 1963, and have seen all their movies and sketches)
As kids we would re watch this films over and over, and quote the dialogue in the school yard 😂
😂😂
@@MandyCaneLane the 2 characters have a speech impediment. Caesar can't say R and Biggus Dickus can't say S. That's what's funny (apart from the obvious joke names - Biggus Dickus and Incontinentia Buttocks). It gets funnier in the full clip when Biggus Dickus says he may be of thome attithtanth in a thudden crithith ( may be of some assistance in a sudden crisis ). Also "This man commands quack legions (crack legions) and he wanks as high as any in Wome (ranks as high as any in Rome). A lot of reactions I see are American but it seems to go right over their head which I don't get at all!
A case of the giggles. Happened at my friends wedding ceremony. It was undignified (not in a church) As far as I know, they are still happily married 25yrs couldn’t help myself, wasn’t just me. Pretty sure she still holds a grudge 🤷♂️
Someone else probably said this already, but Monty Python is the comedy troupe(or group). They made a TV show first called Monty Python's Flying Circus, which is a sketch comedy show that ran for 4 series. Then they made the movies The Holy Grail, Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life before they split up.
Some of their work is absolute comedy gold. A host of the sketches from Flying Circus are immortalised pieces of comedic genius, like the dead parrot, argument clinic, ministry of silly walks, the fish slapping dance, upper class twit of the year, the spanish inquisition, and many many more.
The first two movies are also fantastic, and universally praised. Both are frequently listed at the very top of "best comedy movies of all times" lists. The third one is more divisive. I think some of their funniest stuff is in there, but it's not for everyone.
The Caesar has a speech impediment so that's why it's funny when the centurion guard can't understand him, you see.
MONTY-PYTHON and the HOLY GRAIL..CHK IT OUT!!!!!
This piece is from an even better Monty Python movie called "Life of Brian", well, in my opinion at least, but they are all just so silly and fun
The thing is he couldn't pronounce the letter "R" so he asked the prisoner "So you awe woman?", and when he said "No, no, "Bwavado, a touch of dewwingdo", the lieutenant made a best guess on what he said and answered "Oh, about 11 sir" 🙂
It was filmed without the guys playing soldiers knowing what was going to happen, they were just told that they were not allowed to laugh 😂
Classic movie 🤣🤣 great scene this, most didn’t know what was about to happen. Wish I was on set because it would have been hilarious
Yes Moty Python were a comedy group inspired by a guy called Spike Milligan who was a friend of our new King Charles :-)
The holy trinity: Life of Brian , The Holy Grail and The Meaning of Life. As a kid Monty Python did brain damage I'm still proud of today. Brian production was almost shelved because of financial problems but George Harrison came through and covered it, another reason to love the Beatles.
you see Michael palin breaking up when he's talking to a one soldier, they had to film from the back because he kept laughing
I see it!! 😅😂
If I drank a shot every time she said "I don't know," I'd have been drunk in 30 seconds.
Out of context, bizarre, and weird, describes most of Monty Pythons work :) If you watch Holy Grail completely, instead of isolated clips, you'll see it's basically half a movie worth of story, with half a movie worth of random sketches tailored a bit to (more or less) fit in. With excellent results :)
I am interested!!
They do some good sketches too, one of my favorites is the "Argument Clinic" sketch, although there are dozens of good ones if not more.
I've told you once!
@@recliningbuddha Yes I have!
classic brilliant, I always enjoyed the expression of the roman guard closest to the camera when Michael Palin's Pontius Pilate starts talking about Biggus Dickus's wife Incontinentia Buttocks, laughter was increased by your own adlib, "A very happy one".
😅🤪
Another SWOOSH ..straight over her head 🤣
Whats great about it is that they purposely got random people from the street to play the guards and told them that their main job while playing the gaurds is to not laugh no matter what is said.
They were a tv series first. Sketch show style, like Mitchell and Webb. And spawned a load of shows just like it. And as a kind of spin off they made 4 movies. By far the two most well known were life of brian and the holy grail.
They had an American in the group who used to animate really surreal and silly cartoons they'd put in. And, even in the movies, they would frequently break the fourth wall and speak to the audience.
To a lot of people, these guys were to comedy what the Beatles were to music.
@@nickfeeee i think you're right. I forgot about that lol
One of the funniest scenes in a movie and a classic movie 😂
Fun fact: most of this scene was improv, like a lot of Monty Python scenes, so the centurion guard actors were legit having a terrible time trying to keep a straight face, they kept cracking up because the actor playing the Roman magistrate Pontius Pilate kept getting in their face and saying stuff that would make them crack up. 🤣
That is fun!
Monty Python is a skit group like SNL.
One of my favourite comedians, who I use to watch with my family as a child way back in the 1970's, is Dave Allen. He's an Irish Comedian/Actor who was best known for his humerus look on religion, which is why I'm suggesting the UA-cam video titled 'Dave Allen on Religion'. I think it's one you'll enjoy.
Oooh, good one! I thoroughly second that motion!
It only occurred to me the other day, that Biggus Dickus, being played by Graham Chapman, WAS Brian of Nazareth’s father!
The story goes that the extras were given the instruction that they couldn’t react to what was going on. So when they break it’s real.
Impeccable timing and delivery.
you will love the sketch of "Self Defense Against Fresh Fruit" by monty python
Holy Grail and Life of Brian are different films with different plots, but they’re both Monty Python films, which means they’re from the same comedy group with similar humor.
The Holy Grail is a parody of the stories of King Arthur, specifically his quest for the Holy Grail.
The Life of Brian is a satirical story of a guy in biblical times who’s mistaken for a messiah.
Life of Brian is a hilarious movie about a common man who is mistaken for Jesus. Monty Python is a comedy troupe from Britain who did a 30 minute sketch show for years and Life of Brian and the Holy Grail are two of their movies.
Life of Brian was financed by George Harrison, yes that George Harrison of the Beatles, after The Pythons couldn't get funding or studio support from Hollywood.
Monthy python made sketches too in the 70`s last century.
Try for example How not to be seen or the dead parrot, or the lumberjack song.
Another movie with monthy pyton members is, a fish called Wanda. Super hilarius.
I love Monty Python, my dad showed me The Life of Brian when I was fifteen and it was glorious and now I've got all the movies and Monty Python's flying circus, the tv show.
I need to watch them!
Yes, there are a few Monty python movies, and also there was a tv show Monty python's flying circus
5:19 The guy on the left: "Oh please, God... No more..."
😂😂
Later in the movie Biggus makes an appearance.
As far as I know, there are four Monty Python films: Two are conventional (or unconventional) stories ("The Holy Grail," "the Life of Brian," one is a series of vignettes about the different stages of life ("The Meaning of Life") and the final one is just a bunch of unrelated sketches put together in a film ("And Now for Something Completely Different")
Excpt for the funny names, also Ceasars accent are very funny, most notable in pronuncinig R as W, so the local romans barely hear what he's saying. That is the reason why Brian is repeating himself and the roman commander to give some wierd answers or asking for repeating.
Most definitely you have to watch the Ministry of Silly Walks and the Norwegian Blue Parrot skits. Specially the live ones, it's impossible not to crack down and laugh.
There is a version of this that does the next scene as well. Biggus, who has a lisp, and Pontius addwesse the crowd. They ask the cwowd who they would like weleased for the Pass over celebwations. Woderwick and a stwangler etc.
Everyone always misses the "so... Your father was a woman?"
To paraphrase a quote from a brilliant movie. Brian: "you're all individual'" Crowd "yes we are all individual": Voice from the back of the crowd "I'm not"
Apparently as a joke the soldiers were told that this scene had to be done in 1 take otherwise they wouldn't be paid, so the actor who played Cesar went off script.
Not quite, they weren't threatened without pay but they were purposefully not told the joke (apart from the final line) and just told to keep a straight face.
@@MrPhlanj ahh, got ya thank you appreciate that.
The guards were told to keep straight faces and DO NOT LAUGH or they would NOT get paid for the day. Brian was to scurry off when the First Guard was taken away. Since he didn't the Roman Governor had to Improve the whole skit.
Monty python is the production company that produced several films and series. The films are the life of Brian and the holy grail and there was a series called Monty python's flying circus.
They were the (imho) authority for british humor.
Ok Monty Python is the group of people who wrote and acted the members of Monty Python were Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin. They had a TV series Monty Pythons fly circus. Made 8 movie and 12 Albums.

Pearls before a swine!
Ah, Biggus Dickus. Probably the greatest man of his era.

This comes in two parts actually. And that's really funny too :)
Fun fact: actors actually were told not to laugh because that would ruin footage because camera film is expensive and they haven't money to make more shots.
Fun fact the guards that were laughing and or trying not to laugh was genuine thay dident know what was going to be said and were just told not to laugh so him going to them trying to get them to laugh it was all genuine 😆
