  • Storage is at a premium in a Class B RV like our 20' Pleasure Way Ascent Campervan. The bedding takes up a huge amount of storage space and so I have continued to look for a more compact option. In this video I show you how to make a bed pad modeled after a product from the UK called Duvalay.

    I just went to Sam's Club and bought the 4" memory foam topper in Queen Size. Being 77" tall, I need more space than "Little People=Big World! This system works so well. It's also endothermic, so I'm never cold.

    Loved the idea of making a sleeping pad with removable cover. Our Sprinter is a Jayco Melbourne with a slide out bed in the back, It's uncomfortable, so I'd already bought a 2.5" memory foam topper,but making the bed/getting a fitted sheet tucked in seemed impossible....so, I made a cover for the memory foam pad and now I don't need a fitted sheet. I used a regular cotton sheet for one side and a flannel one for the other side - figure we can use whichever side the weather dictates. Thanks for your detailed tutorial...I have even more respect for you after making mine - it was definitely a comedy of errors!

    In our 2013 Excel TS we use a fitted deep pocket california king size sheet over a quilt for padding and successfully tuck the corners under the ottoman cushions. Then a duvet over us.

    I thought about making these for a long time since I had an extra memory foam pad I liked from the last RV we had that I could cut down to size. Finally ended up just buying the Duvalays. I couldn’t quite figure out how the top comforter layer was connected to the bottom memory foam layer. The top comforter part on the ones I got was quite thin so I think I will end up having to add another quilt on top for warmth. Your directions were very clear, good job. Thanks for the tip on the travel pillows. Will give them a try. Anything that cuts down on size of things to store in a class B is good.

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  5 років тому

      +Peggy Doulos You might try cutting a pad to size and inserting it inside the bag. If it moves around too much you could use a spray adhesive to secure it down.

    I made these two years ago for our 24' Era but made them with a Velcro closure at the bottom more like a pillow case but may make the next set of closure on the side. I got a kick of seeing your sewing machine as I have the same one and love it still. My next project is also the insulated window covers. I have the flannel material and the reflective material and think I will wait to see your method before I begin. Excellent presentation! Thank you.

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  5 років тому

      +joyce marino I thought about using Velcro but figured the zipper would be more comfortable.
      My window cover video may be more of a what not to do. Nevertheless, they are working great. Testing them out right now in the desert.
      The sewing machine was a present I bought myself after cashing in some Eastman Kodak stock my grand parents had given me when I was a child. They had known George Eastman. I hung on to the stocks for 40 years and sold them not long before things went south for the company.

    I really like your videos. You are way ahead of us. We followed your earlier advice and made an online purchase of sheepskin from overseas. My wife's winter project was cutting it down to fit and sizing a sheet cover to fit. We haven't even used it. You've already gone to another project. What was the problem with the sheepskin?

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  5 років тому

      Actually there is nothing wrong with the sheepskin and John prefers it. The problem was with the amount of space it takes up. And the other problem is I'm always tinkering with things looking for something that's even better. We actually used the sheep skin on our last trip. Now I think I may have a better way of using the sheepskin and/or the foam which I'll bring up in a future video.

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  4 роки тому +1

      We find that our pleasureway mattress doesn't need anything. The one inch foam was enough but I have now changed to just using twin fitted sheets. I'll try to include a short video in the next few weeks as we travel.

    One thing I just added to our Ascent is an indoor outdoor thermometer which I Velcro to the wall space above the rear control panel so you can see it from your bed. Its battery operated. I Velcro both the monitor and sensor there and put a couple of small Velcro strips outside on the sliding door so when we stop for camping I can temporally mount the sensor outside. That way you will remember to bring it back inside before you move the van. You can keep the batteries out of the units until you use them. When you are up in Alaska sleeping in you van the outside temperature might be useful information. Anyway, I thought it was kind of cool. Link below.

    • @FromShetoMe

      +Judy Payne Not really. My mom didn’t like quilts because they reminded her of her family’s economic struggles as they had no other options. So she taught me to sew but did not encourage quilting. And now I have too many other interests that crowd out almost any sewing. But I love looking at quilts. My favorite sewing now is transforming ready to wear into something new.

    Hi, I am making a similar padding for our Lexor TS using the 1 inch foam. I'm having trouble rolling the foam into something that will fit well into our rv. How did you get your foam to fold so compact? Thanks so much.

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  3 роки тому

      I just folded it in half and then rolled it like a sleeping bag. I also use elastic straps to cinch down.

  • @annarademacher8359
    @annarademacher8359 5 років тому

    OMG I'm so bad at this -- this is my 3d attempt to make a comment -- are you getting this? My questions get shorter each time. #1. Best sleeping pad? -- do you still prefer the lambswool - where did you get it and do you have suggestions to share about it? We're finally found our camper van -- in Massachusetts. We live in Oregon. We plan on going to get it and bring it home in March - still cold on I-80 route back. I don't want to buy too much over there because I have things at home for outfitting, also want to make my own curtains , etc. BUT want to at least get pads so we can sleep fairly well. #2. Any other "must have" suggestions ?

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  5 років тому

      How exciting for you. Hope you can enjoy some sights while you are back east.
      The only must have is lots of patience with yourself and your partner. If you don't have the same height challenges that we have, then you might want to look into the RV Superbag. Depending on the kind of RV you are getting, you may not need anything else. Pleasure Way has a very comfortable bed but I have heard that other manufacturers can be quite uncomfortable. On our last trip we actually slept without any pad the last night because I wanted to see what that was like. I slept fine but John has a hip problem. He prefers the lambswool (which I purchased from The Company Store) but I like the ease and space savings of the 1" foam pads. I'm going to continue to experiment with trying to reduce the bulk of the lambswool. Maybe we could eliminate the cover and just sleep directly on the wool. We'll check it out on our next trip.
      You are smart not to purchase a lot of things. As you use the vehicle you will figure out what works and doesn't. Obviously bedding is a must. We do like the camping pillows that I mentioned (amzn.to/2PsQpzB). They are memory foam and could be packed for your flight to the east coast. Just about everything else could be purchased there, like silverware, knives, can opener, cups, minimal pans. I would use paper plates until you get settled in. Try to locate some good outfitting stores where you can stop and shop before driving back. You could use an Amazon locker to have a few things waiting for you as well. As you travel, make notes on your phone or in a notebook of things you want to add. Mike and Jennifer Wendland have a useful packing list here: rvlifestyle.com/rvpackinglist.pdf

      +Carol Paguaga Baker There is definitely a market for these. If I were 20 years younger...
      That said, should be easy to find a local seamstress to make a pair. And still cheaper than Duvalay.

  • @juliapl3174
    @juliapl3174 5 років тому

    I’m still trying to figure out the best bedding for our Lexor. Have you thought about cutting the lambswool in half lengthwise? Would that make it easier to store? Also, why do you like the lambswool better than the foam?

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  5 років тому +1

      The foam is only 1" thick and I'm sure not the highest quality. I like the foam fine although it's probably not as warm in the winter. John has a bad hip and for whatever reason the lambswool felt better to him. But he is having hip surgery in a month and hopefully won't care after that. Cutting the lambswool might make it easier to store but then you've got a seam that moves around which neither of us like. It comes down to figuring out how to secure the bedding so it doesn't bunch up. But I have one more trick up my sleeve and will show that in a video very soon.

      From She to Me thanks so much for your response. As we speak, I’m laying on the bed trying out the latest idea. It’s a trifold twin mattress. I need something to firm up the bed and smooth the bumps. Very comfy and easy to set up but the trifold takes up space.
