A Devastating Loss: RIP Sol - Redding Nest Liberty & Guardian (6/14)

- Ever since the cam came back up (most recently) Sol just hadn't seemed quite right. There were no more attempts to eagerly perch on mom's stump, and then a loss of interest in feeding. This morning, poor Sol just looked so weak and exhausted.
As per my usual, I am not showing Sol's final moments. I am sharing a few clips from this morning however - including one of the last moments that Sol was still standing and his/her final moments with mom, Liberty.
Sol passed on around 10:40 this morning.
Though I see many comments discussing the horrors of rat poison, there has been no confirmation of what took Sol from us. We will never really know the answer to that.
This was a shocking and devastating loss. When they make it this far, we tend to think they're all clear and that the biggest hurdles have been cleared. This is a horrid reminder that life is fragile and tragedy can be very unexpected.
One silver lining to brighten this awful day... Luna has been spotted, and s/he is alive and well. Ground crews were able to confirm with a photo that Luna is on the grassy island near the nest. The cam was trying to share a visual as well, but I personally did not see Luna in their scanning of the area. This is reason to be thankful... Luna is still with us!

Oh no! This is the first Bald Eagle nest I ever watched, back in 2021. Liberty and Guardian had three eaglets(Honor, Glory, and Rebel), and I spent many hours watching them grow up. The live chat gave me a lot of info, so I learned a lot. Last year was so sad when the eggs didn't hatch. This year there was no live chat, but I was happy to see Guardian and Liberty have two eaglets to raise. It has been sad in several nests this year.

This has season has been a roller-coaster for sure...so many tragedies and now another. Dear sweet Sol looked very ill and it breaks our hearts as we all want to do something. I too do not understand the different policies at each nest but we need to respect the decisions made and pray for a good outcome. Hearts are breaking over this loss, but we know he is now pain free and his suffering is over. He is soaring high in the heavens with all the other precious lost babies. Rest in blessed peace sweet Sol. You are greatly missed.

No one knows. Some suspect lead poisoning, others an obstruction from an ingested bone. Hard to tell without a neocropsy which will not be done. Altho very very sad, he is no longer suffering.
It looks like the folks at FORE (& many others) believe that the heat must have played a contributing role as well. Dehydration, etc. :(
@@WingsOfWhimsy Aww poor baby. Really is hard to see that footage. I honestly couldn’t watch much as I’m so sensitive to wildlife suffering. And I’ve been thinking of the heat waves hitting across the country and all the juvies out there 😓🙏

Absolutely heartbreaking. I didn’t actively follow this nest, but regularly saw videos and posts about it popping up. I first heard of Sol just 3 days prior to his death, when I was scrolling through the Friends of the Redding Eagles Fb page to find info they had shared about a young hawklet named Chance, who had fallen out of a nest after having been raised by eagles. I remember noting in passing just how excited everyone was about Sol and this eagle family. Never would have guessed this would end up happening just a few short days later. 😔 RIP Sol.
It was definitely quite a shock to me - and it seems to most everyone else. Poor little thing. :(
Tragic event nature at it's rawest. It reminds me of Captiva Florida and the passing of Lusa. R.I.P. Sol you will be always in our hearts. Your spirit will fly high forever.

If Liberty and Guardian were eating the same things as Sol and Luna, then how are they doing now ? Has anyone seen them recently ?
Did the other juvie already fledge?? Was there testing done on Sol?

Luna "exited the nest". LOL We're not quite sure how that happened. The cam was down at the time. Ground crew were checking in frequently - saw two eaglets in nest in the AM (on the 11th) & then only saw one eaglet in nest by evening time. Now, luna is hanging out on a marshy little "island" neside the nest, under the watchful eyes of mom & dad.

What happened to her? Was she taken out of best for testing?
They seem to be thinking it was primarily caused by the heat and dehydration, but we will never know for certain. They will not be retrieving the body.

Unfortunately, each nest and each geographical location seems to have its own set of policies, laws, and people. Yes, we've seen Dr. Sharpe's crew fly in hanging from ropes on helicopters to access nests - and we've seen the KNF crew in Louisiana run right out in the middle of the night to snatch up a sick eagle.... there are many stories that seem to "break the rules", but even in those cases - they're following the rules that apply to their location & situation it seems. It's apparently all overseen by federal regulation of some sort, but yes... it seems to vary more than we're led to believe it can. In some cases - as in here at Redding - they simply have weighed out a range of factors to make these decisions. Those factors can be many! Here, they did mention that the nest tree is dying and therefore probbaly rather feeble. An attempt to access could have resulted in anything from human injury/death to destroying the tree/nest & even injuring one of the eagles, and frankly - by the time birds show more obvious symptoms - like avoiding food.... they're too far gone to be saved. I'm not saying I'm at all okay with leaving a sick animal to just fade away... that hurts & it will never ever feel right to me, personally - but I do understand the processes and the reasoning to an extent. I view each case for what it is, and with Sol, I 100% believe any effort to save him by the time a problem was noticed would have been futile. :(
The nest is in a dead cottonwood and was already at extreme risk. Coverage of the pair was ending this year and the loss of Sol is a double hit with one egg lost earlier. The triplets were a blast to watch and archived videos are fun to revisit.

What I know of the federally protected species especially the eagles is they have to be grounded before they can be helped. A prime example of this is Anna and Andrea, as you mentioned above at the KNF Nests. And I know there’s been others My mind is drawing a blank right now, but who is our little eaglet that fell to the branch below the nest, and then to the ground and we thought she was doing real good, but then passed. And then you have the nest that got blown out of the tree and Cedar Rapids Iowa a couple weeks ago. So fascinating that we have all the cameras today, but geez, We get so attached to them. RIP , SOL. 🐥❤️🦅
This happened very quickly I believe, there would have been way to rescue the eaglet in time.

No. All we can do is speculate right now & many seem to be leaning toward the heat (and lack of shade/cover) being a prime factor. Again - JUST speculation. Hopefully, a necropsy can be performed & we will know more. It's not unreasonable to believe that Sol & Luna may have passed from the same cause - but again... we can't be certain.
