send in an oil analysis. I've had my 86 for over a year now. Only one track day. Only mods are an exhaust and the tomei baffle. Oil analysis gave me a lot of peace of mind.
Former FRS daily, and BRZ waitlisted. If you're looking for more focused vehicle, you could mod the 86 or go Cayman, but imho taking on a classic car like the S2K is more project than driving. As a driver first, I considered it but I'd rather spend my time and money hooning than wrenching.
I had a 2022 GR86 Premium in Neptune Blue and sold it in November of last year. First of all I loved the way it looked (maybe a little too much). For a modern car it drove great, smooth inputs, easy to either maintain traction or have a controlled slide. The steering feel was non existent though. I sold mine with 6,000 miles on it and I bought an NB Miata as it’s replacement. Apart from styling I by far prefer to drive this Miata with its proper steering feel, only weighs 2,299lbs and the most important for me is it’s fun at any speed. I also considered an s2000 and I prefer the ap1 over the ap2 with its more aggressive setup. However for me the NB Miata won me over with its lighter weight and steering feel. I can add power by either kswap kit, supercharger, turbo or na build if I need more acceleration. What keeps me in the Miata is how it feels to drive and for the price nothing compares. Though I do want to drive a Honda Beat.
I'll be very happy if this car gets a fix for the engine issue. I'm wondering if an engine swap is worth it when the engine does blow eventually. Like everything else about the platform is great except the engine

The platform is a fantastic one, maybe instead of looking to replace the car, maybe K Swap, or even better a rotary swap if you’re looking for pure track performance
Great vid! I had a 13 frs for almost 3 years and loved the heck out of it. Had an 18 wrx since and now a 17 Golf R. I see you have the Uniden rd. Does the new gen have the hidden extra cig adapter in side the back of the glovebox? That’s where I ran mine on the frs. Thank you for your content!
It's not an extra lol, but yes the one is there, it's hard to see it, it's pretty hidden in the glovebox and you'd never know unless told. Not that hard to hide the wiring through it though since there's a gap above the box. Feels they just put it to not make people upset of not having one. Even though I never see anyone use it for its intended purpose, they still use it for accesories.
If I was in your position I’d try to be patient to find a good deal on a more hardcore FR car (s2000 or c6 corvette) to swap for your gr86. And while your waiting, if a company finds a true fix for the GR86 on track engine issues, then you can reevaluate whether you truly want to keep the gr86.
I fully agree with your argument: the 86/brz is not as attractive if you got a dedicated daily driver. The BRZ is amaziing as a do-everything-car for a young boy/girl. I just sold my 14 BRZ last month for a NC2 miata, for the same reason as you: I recently got a cx-50 turbo as my daily, and the BRZ's driving experience is just not special enough: lakcluster engine, worse-than-cx50_steering, etc. Though Miata is a downgrade in some other's opinion, it provide an unmatched top-down experience, The 1st gen 86/brz might still be a wonderful 2nd car if you heavily modify it and make it a canyon/track toy though.
ND2 club would be my choice for a track car, but I'm 5'8" 130lbs. I'm a current 7 year owner of a FRS that I track about 4 times a year. The engine issues have me not even considering the GR86 sadly...but I may K swap the FRS when she dies eventually. Would you consider an Elise, or too expensive? Drivers cars are getting too hard to come by 😢
Agreed, if it’s a second car/track car ND2 is the way to go. If you need a dual daily / fun car GR86. The most slept on track car at the moment is the NC2/3 Miata IMO. More reliable than ND2, higher mod ceiling, and hydraulic steering.
I'm trying to see what ppl think as far as age goes for owning a GR86. I'm 41 going on 42. I would love a GR86. But for my age i feel like i should be driving something like a Z or Supra but those cars are way out of my budget especially with the markups. My other vehicle is a Honda passport for the family. I do have 2 other cars in the garage but they don't see the road often. Which is why i want something that's not gonna break the bank and still be fun to drive. I guess my question is am i too old for a GR86?
Doesn't sun block make running a convertible viable or is it a bit too much of a pain? I think it's worth it but then I live in England so it's hardly a common task 😂
How was the experience from anyone who bought a car out of state ? Did you drive or fly? I’m curious because it’s something I may be doing in the near future
I drive a 2023 BRZ mostly because of the practicality. Usually drive the SUV (a CX-5 so not too dissimilar to your setup…) when other people or long distances are involved but also nice to know kids or dog can fit in the BRZ in a pinch. If I didn’t have all that responsibility… well I’d probably have a ND2 Miata likely in RF form. Yeah it’s a bit softer to begin with but with some mods that’s not too hard to fix. I guess depends what kind of racing you’re doing and what mods you’re allowed to do to stay within certain classes. S2000, NA/NB Miata are also good options. Depending on budget maybe even an Elise?
Emira is on the way. My plan is to have a FR MR and RR sports car in the garage. Right now FR will likely be S2K. RR will be the last. 911 of some sort
I would consider going back to an frs… the gr86 is a great car and all but it’s still too new. I think after the hype goes away and the prices are down then the gr86 would be a newer s chassis. But for now I’d say frs or maybe a 350z, rx7 fc, 240 hatch. Something like that… Miata’s are so overrated and very tiny RC cars. Not practical as a daily. I do think they are better than an s2k which is another overrated car.
Hi! I think you should wait for the next gen which will probably embed an electric or hybrid motorisation, that will fix the reliability cz way way better than full mecanic engines, and you'll be right if it matches with you and even if it doesn't you'll be able to flex to s2k or miata, you have the time, take it. ^w^
I would *_never_* take a stock Subaru on a track, like you have, with the stock oil pan/pick-up tube etc.. That's what causes the oil pressure issues and subsequent failures. You can basically get rid of any worry of engine failure by replacing the oil pan with an aftermarket one (if anyone makes one, yet. I'd imagine IAG will be, if they don't, already). The stock baffling causes oil to slosh to one side of the engine, causing starvation/low oil pressure. You see it happening more often because Toyota is giving owners track days with the purchase of the car. High G force turns on stock oil pans is going to cause a lot of failures.
Generally it's funny how people get spooked by the RTV issue for the GR86 (even those who have owned the GT86 for a long time before the GR86) if the GT86/Scion FRS/old BRZ actually always had it and had a worse oil pickup tube design than the GR86 does...
Doesn't everyone get 10 year warranty at Toyota (if you let the dealer do the yearly maintenance)? If so, why even worry about the small chance of an oil starvation issue? Toyota will repair it for free.
@@jubbalandcars Oh. We get 10 years, well, 1 year after each maintenance at Toyota up until 10 years after purchase. Do you know many cases where Toyota didn't cover engine issues?

send in an oil analysis. I've had my 86 for over a year now. Only one track day. Only mods are an exhaust and the tomei baffle. Oil analysis gave me a lot of peace of mind.
That doesn’t do anything for engine failure issue. Having a clean oil analysis doesn’t mean when I track it next the engine won’t blow
Im on the edge every damn day thinking about buying one or just stick with a later model first gen
@@thatpersiandude7386 If you don't plan on tracking it the oil pressure issue shouldn't be that big a concern.
You can fix starvation by replacing the oil pan with an aftermarket one, if/when one exists. It's not really a worry on the street but definitely is on a track. The starvation is due to the stock baffling.
@@thatpersiandude7386 Definitely this new one.
@@hhaste yup I bought the car hoping to grow with it on the track, keeping fingers crossed for a solution
My wife has a CX50 and I am contemplating a GR 😂..
For a non-track guy, would you still be concerned over long term engine reliability? Would plan to keep for minimum 10 years, below average annual mileage.
Please keep the GR86 and make it OEM+. That’s just my personal opinion! You’re the guy making me buy this car! Hahahah
Whats oem+
@@uswr2848 means keep it stock but add things that look original or factory. Like the ducktail and TRD/STi trim pieces.
I enjoyed my GR86 for the 9 months that i owned it. Such a fun car, ended up selling it to go back to a 2019 GTI since it makes more sense for my current life.
Hows the gti?
leagues better than the 86 as a commuter, and more fun in 90% of scenarios because of the torque
But I definitely miss the driving position and how great it drove on a backroad! @@kylechavez7961
I will never understand selling a RWD for a FWD
If you said you replaced it with a Golf R, I'd understand
then you may be confused as to what a Golf R is.. not only would a 7.5 be about the price it was new with 30,000 miles but its also at the end of the day still a FWD car with FWD dynamics.
I've got my summer toy coming soon and I didnt love the 86 for that be the "fun" car@@Aglai76
The platform is a fantastic one, maybe instead of looking to replace the car, maybe K Swap, or even better a rotary swap if you’re looking for pure track performance
I mean, his main issue with the car is engine reliability under hardcore track use, a rotary swap would only make the situation worse.
TheMX5 is super super reliable , and beautiful. ND2 Gen . The 86 is nice however the gasket issue needs to addressed NOW .
RTV isn’t causing the engine failures
No more GR 86,no more Jubbal & Cars
If I was in your position I’d try to be patient to find a good deal on a more hardcore FR car (s2000 or c6 corvette) to swap for your gr86. And while your waiting, if a company finds a true fix for the GR86 on track engine issues, then you can reevaluate whether you truly want to keep the gr86.
The true fix is just an aftermarket oil pan.
@@hhaste which aftermarket oil pan? from what I see no oil pan has helped so far.
quality vids as always

2.5 swap it 😊
@@BitcoinTo100K that's actually on my long term list.
@yyalbert4756 Very nice I absolutely love mine don't shut up about it lol
NC2 is definitely a contender. Well said
ND2 club would be my choice for a track car, but I'm 5'8" 130lbs.
@@TT92348exactly, NC2/NC3 would be my choice as well. Plus k-swap would be easily available.
@@ruturaj47 K Swap NC seems like a monster. S2000 with more predictable handling and better steering. Lighter weight even
@@TT92348 exactly, plus I wonder if transmission and diff from s2k could be used as well. Built k24 would be a high revving monster for sure.
Nope no such thing as too old for this car. Just as long as you can get in and out ok
I’m 62.......... should be getting mine in June. ........Go for it .
Doesn't sun block make running a convertible viable or is it a bit too much of a pain? I think it's worth it but then I live in England so it's hardly a common task 😂
Anyone know what kind of phone holder is the one he has
How was the experience from anyone who bought a car out of state ? Did you drive or fly? I’m curious because it’s something I may be doing in the near future
Flew one way. Drove back 6 hours
Dumb question but what is the phone mount you are using? I can't find one that doesn't use adhesive.
Why do people want to mount a phone when they have android auto/apple carplay?
@@fidrat24 because it’s a wired connection and if you have a passenger there’s nowhere for the phone. Not difficult.
The link for the ranking index of the cars you've driven is broken, or is it just me?
Nice car. Miata competitor. Comparable price. Miata is tough to beat.
Im 16. Would this be a good first car?
have you tried it against the Miata?
Did you disable ASC?
How much are you trying to sell it for?
Keep the GR.
It’s a risk that has gotten more attention recently for good reason. And it’s given many of us pause
Generally it's funny how people get spooked by the RTV issue for the GR86 (even those who have owned the GT86 for a long time before the GR86) if the GT86/Scion FRS/old BRZ actually always had it and had a worse oil pickup tube design than the GR86 does...
We see issues in the second gen not first gen with this issue
28k$? crazy cheap there in US and no brainer. Try 42k$ in EU. 😖
Doesn't everyone get 10 year warranty at Toyota (if you let the dealer do the yearly maintenance)? If so, why even worry about the small chance of an oil starvation issue? Toyota will repair it for free.
Not 10 years. Also usually not covered
@@jubbalandcars Oh. We get 10 years, well, 1 year after each maintenance at Toyota up until 10 years after purchase. Do you know many cases where Toyota didn't cover engine issues?
Just go buy a S2000 and you will never miss your GR86 for a single bit.

@@jubbalandcars Agreed! I watched all your S2K videos multiple times and I can really tell how much love you have for this car as a 86/BRZ owner because I was on the exact same path. It's kind of funny really.. The Toyota/Subaru collaboration is going much worse than the collaboration with Toyota/BMW(supra). Who would have figured, with all the screaming 14 year olds complaining on the internet, you would have thought that BMW would have blown up on startup. Yet, it's the Subaru that is failing at low kms. As someone that owned a JDM WRX STi - that had classic subie engine failure - these flat engines in the GR86 from subaru are garbage.
I already got rid of it. I am not going to continue to be played by Subaru and Toyota.

@@jubbalandcars I find this engine is smooth and fast revving, which is great for a sports car. Yeah, it doesn't sound great, sometimes like a lawmower lol, but get rid of the fake engine noise and add an exhaust and it's pretty engaging. Fast revving NA though, that's that boxer magic.
