pretty much all Chinese restaurants in the netherlands are Chinese-Indonesia restaurants. got to do with our colonization of Indonesia. so its kind of a mix. most of the products you find in the Chinese stores (afhaal chinees as we call it in dutch Take away chinese) sell products that you cant find in china period. most of the stuff is not chinese nor Indonesian. its mostly some sort of dutch creation. But we do have real authentic chinese restaurants though Rotterdam and amsterdam got a couple i believe. we also have a Cantonese Restaurant not sure where that one is located. but the normal Afhaal Chinees stores/restaurants are not authentic chinese.

Always buy ketchup at IKEA, yes really they have 50% less sugar or so and every time i go there i always buy a couple, don't forget the frozen meat balls (bordeau rode zak) its great stuff when low in groceries ammo. Some time back i have seen the video regarding MRE, when shit goes down in case of conflict I recommend "Coertjens | Chili Con Carne" I always buy a few cans(blik) when at the Makro but you can buy them online to, It goes well with dutch knakworstjes and some olive oil but thats just my personal opinon, cheers guys have a good one

Please try bread from a bakery, instead of a supermarket, it is usually much more tasty. And buy cheese on the market or in a cheese store. You are so right about the surinamese food, also indonesien food is part of the (aquired) dutch culture and because of the intricate history of these parts of the world, chinese food is very much in favour here too.
I am happy to hear that you feel safe, that's an important issue.

The problem with the sliced cheese is not their quality, they are above average, and pretty tasty. Its their price. Just like sliced up anything, if you buy the raw-deal, you get more bang for your buck. MUCH more. Also: the cheeses in grocery stores are meh to pretty good, but the cheeses in specialty cheese shops are INSANEly good (and a bit more expensive: but worth it). They have dozens upon dozens of types. Old, young, with added spices, with or without holes, from all different places (different place=different soil=different grass=different cheese taste). Make it a day out: go to a good cheese shop with 40 euro, and let yourself be treated to the finest cheeses in town. They will let you taste a lot (if you buy afterwards, if you dont buy, the tasting is over pretty quick, haha)

I sort of expected you to address financial safety, esecpially if you get sick. You don't go bankrupt because you got huge medical bills. You just pay your 'eigen risico' (about 400 to 1000 euros) and that is it.

    • @buncharted
      @buncharted  Рік тому

that’s mostly how health care works in the US too. the difference is that insurance can be costly and many people are uninsured or underinsured, which is where the medical debt or bankruptcy comes into play. most insurance in the US has a “deductible” which is the “eigen risico” and costs above it are fully covered.
the biggest difference is health insurance is SIGNIFICANTLY more affordable in the netherlands, the eigen risico is much lower (our deductible in the US, shared between michelle and i, was like $3000, i believe), and its mandatory.

Lumpia (loempia) was introduced in the Netherlands from Indonesia, a former colony (and as some of the people of Surinam have ancestors in Indonesia, this is why they too have lumpia) The Dutch had several trading posts/fortresses in Taiwan and encouraged the Chinese from the mainland to permanently settle there. Some of these Chinese took the trip to go to Batavia (now renamed Jakarta). Those Chinese spoke Hokkien, and had a specific name for spring rolls: lunpia, which is how the word got spread to Indonesia, the Netherlands and Surinam.

In many areas, especially in the mid west, you can drive for long distances without crossing cities and just enjoy the mountains, desert, dunes, forests, lakes and so on. Old Amsterdam is good tosti cheese, because it's fake. Through some innovation it tastes older than it is, hence the name 'old' which isn't Dutch nor Amsterdam dialect and therefore not legally protected, calling it 'oud' would be a fellony. It's probably the first cheese maker in Amsterdam anyway and they only exist for 2 decades. But not a bad product, just fake marketing.
There is proper cheese in the supermarket, in slices too. But the really good cheese is sold in the non tourist cheese shops and at the market, allthough not all market stands and cheese shops are equally good of course, but they'll let you taste.

Btw, what's your take on German and Italian bread, since you've been to both? I personally think their bread is much better than dutch bread. Finally... don't talk about Old Amsterdam, it's fake old cheese! 2. Exercise. Your movement quadrupled? That's both amazing, and a sad commentary about the car culture that plagues US towns.
    3. Nobody thinks of NL as a place for foodie culture, BUT the sheer quality of basic items refutes that. If you're an aspiring home chef like me (don't take that too seriously) you KNOW that food quality is the foundation of everything. I'm commenting on this because in my list of priorities in "places to retire to" access to quality food, both restaurants and grocery, is on the short list.
    4. Safety. Yeah, I couldn't agree more.

100% about foodie culture! the quality of every single meal we make at home improved dramatically just by moving here (and every ingredient is often cheaper than the US)

Someone probably already explained this, but the fact most Surinamese eateries serve Chinese, Indonesian and Surinamese cuisine, is because like Indonesia, Suriname used to be a Dutch colony.
And sometime during the 1800s I believe, the Dutch brought a lot of Indonesian and Chinese workers over from the Dutch East Indies.

If you like bread so much, go to a Moroccan bread store and buy some maize-white short breads and a few tin of sardines. That combination is heaven on earth.

Bread: flour, yeast, salt and water. If there's anything else in it, it's no good. That's why I don't eat bread from the supermarket. Most bread in the supermarket has way more ingredients, like E-numbers and 'broodverbetermiddel', which loosely translates as 'stuff to make bread better', it can be basically whatever and does not need to be specified in the list of ingredients. (check Wikipedia for the list of possible chemicals). Also it does not make bread better, it makes it worse. The primary function is to make bread more fluffy so less ingredients are required to produce the same size bread.
I think you are gonna be AMAZED when you visit an artisan bakery and try really good bread. Combine it with butter and 'overjarige kaas' (cheese matured for over a year) from a cheese shop, it will blow you away.
    Have fun discovering the Netherlands!

The Dutch tend to prefer the "bread at the baker, meat at the butcher's and vegetables at the greengrocer's" idealogy. No processed stuff. But then, I live in Mexico, am retired and have time to spare. But also back when I lived in The Netherlands, I would follow the same doctrine. Never buy your food in a supermarket. I like to know what goes into my food and how it's prepared. Who better than I?

I just had to comment on the food...I can tell you this the food quality has gone down in the years. Fruit was better 10-20 years ago, but that's because it was supposed to be fresh for 2-3 days. Now you buy more unripe fruit because it has to stay 'fresh' longer like for 5-8 days. So it means like banana is harvested earlier from trees, so there's vitamins from the sun which also makes it taste less sweet (natural). You don't eat meat, but meat was also better, it tasted juicer and nowadays when I buy mincemeat, there will be small pieces of bone/hard bits in it. Also, I buy cheese already sliced because it's easier and I'm lazy to cut it myself. (is a bit more expensive) Bread also used to be tastier, but would only be good for 3 days max. Now up to 7 days (although after 3 days you do taste that it's older.) I had to edit...I'm talking about the supermarket stuff. For the best bread go to a bakery and for meat go to a real butcher. Supermarkets used to have a bakery inhouse and butcher and cheeses department.

Funny you mention this 'old Amsterdam '.
Because it is not old, but introduced in 1985.
It is Goudse kaas riped in 8 months instead of 12.
The advertising show movies from before the war, but have nothing to do with the cheese.

On the Old Amsterdam: It's nice enough, but it's not called Oude Kaas, but Old Amsterdam, because it is not old at all. Old cheese has to mature 24+ months to get the taste of Oude Kaas, but Old Amsterdam has fast aging enzymes. They also have a different taste for this reason, then the normal Oude Kaas. With Old Amsterdam you basically pay mostly for marketing, not for quality cheese. Just so you know, buy Old Amsterdam and a good Oude Kaas and do a taste test.

then again, we used to build to last untill 4 bussines men invented to law of obselence. (light bulb manufactures)
plenty was destroyed by germans in the second world war tho, the whole of rotterdam's inner city was flattend for example.

Familiar with the fact that Old Amsterdam is just a recently created (1985) cheese with inspiration from Italian old cheese… ? it has no real history or connection with A’dam… (and the cheese isn’t officially old due to the production process).

I miiiiiissss the bread. My Dutch uncle visited us in Philly PA a couple years back and he complained how US bread smells too sweet. Even if you walk into the bread isle at a US grocery store, I agree with him that it smells like just sugar. AND my grandfather, owned a bakery in NL, during WWII as well, so my family knows the difference. And a simple daily sandwich with butter, cheese and salami or bologna will never escape me. 😁
Now we have a family member with a gluten allergy sooo... The only brand I know if in NL is Schär. And that in the US is pricy....
I'm curious how my grandfather would have handled that for his allergic grandkids?

I hope you can read Dutch a little bit 😉 Exposure is one way of learning it.
