I understand the title of the video might be attractive to a different type of "discussion", but it's the best I could think of given the nature of the topic. If that's what you want to post about, I don't mind, but also do post your thoughts on the subject as well :)

I think that, if nothing doesn't exist, then that means that everything is somehow connected, as there is no separation in between things, because there is no nothing anywhere, so everything that exist is a structure connected by similar parts, so everything put together (it is already together) is the longest thing.

actually im a professor in the harvard school. the thought to be longest thing is essentially the "neuralosyui gallack" its the galactic string as one piece that is longer than our observable universe. it does not atrract any light so we are not sure if its longer than the observable universe certainly. but there are signs that it comes all the way from our non-observable universe.

  • @locouk

IMO, the longest thing we have made is roads. Someone in Argentina can touch a road at the same time as a person in New York, in effect they are connected by the same road.

  • @thomasjohnson6523
    @thomasjohnson6523 7 років тому +1

Well, the Burj Khalifa is made up of atoms (resp. molecules) which have some "space" between them. That means that any structure like this isn't connected by "touching" (as in the commonly used meaning of "no space inbetween") but rather by electromagnetic forces. If this force counts as connection of a structure, why don't the other 3 fundamental forces count? The solar system is "connected" by gravity. Gravity is quite probably infinite (if it has infinite time to expand) so the "largest thing" would be a line starting from one end of the universe to whatever part the gravitational waves might have reached in that time. If you wanted to only count things that are "noticably connected" cosmic filaments might be rather huge. If string theory is correct, however, all things mentioned above wouldn't matter, because that string is still longer and actually "connected".
(I, personally, think that this "space inbetween" of atoms still counts as touching, but I'm referring to the laymans use of the word here)

if by 'thing' we mean a structure in space that it's parts have relation to one another then we can say that the longest thing in the universe is likely the diameter of the largest black hole we can find out there. another really long thing could be the ort cloud of a star. it stretches light years away from the star itself but it's still caused by the star's gravity so the entire content of the ort cloud is interlinked by gravity. These ort clouds of stars can be thousands of light years in diameter depending on the star's size and field of influence. We can also treat a nebula as a structure as it's technically an explosion so vast that it's still occurring as we see it and these are even 50+ light years in diameter. A structure of several gravitationally bound galaxies can also be treated as a structure so really anything can be the longest thing in the universe, depending on how you define 'thing'.

when talking about the longest thing are we talking about vastness or are we talking about just a length from point a to b? when asking what the longest thing is this should be considered in this case the most vast thing is the human imagination it can take you anywhere you want as to the longest thing when talking about point a to b than that is more than likely those proposed cosmic strings. In any case can you do what is the most vast thing next?

Space X has footage of successful vertical landings. But, I don't think their over water. Putting a black backdrop when showing the scale of the sun in the Dyson's ring scenario might have been helpful. The string craps so theoretical it seems like space filler now days. Planting a ring around a red dwarf does sound cozy though. Much more manageable then the one in Ringworld.

IN YOUR opinion, do you think because of how dense and fact we can't truly perceive them, could they have something to do with gravity? I understand general relatively and basic quantum mechanics, im no expert, but now youv got me wondering if these one dimensional virtually huge but invisible strings could potentially be gravity. I may be way off base here but you seem like someone who likes to teach and I'm very interested in your opinion on universal and existence topics

+Kuldip Soliya problem is that 1 dim objects have no volume thus lack the density, same with 2d objects. its true about solid objects but didn't convey to particles or strings, I suppose

+NarutoSSj6 it's not volume based density it's length based density. normally unit of density is kg/m^3 but for length based density unit is kg/m
if I'm not mistaken then density of string in physics mostly taken as linear density that is kg or g/m

if you divide anything by zero it becomes infinity so the equation is
      1kg/(1x0x0)=infinity

I have heard of s 15? GPc galaxy cluster, suposedly breaking uniformity, doesn't that count?

The longest thing I can think of is the hilberts curve. HINT: it's infinite

What if I align all the atoms in the universe in a single line end to end? How long will it be?

we don't know how many atoms exist in the universe but a calculated estimate would be the length of the absorvable universe cubed

+Kathie Dart - I can't tell what level of experience you are asking this with? An answer would be very different if you haven't yet learned about the multiverse, than it would if you agreed there is a universe, and very different agin if you believed a Sky Daddy created all of this in 6 days, 6,000 years ago.
