Thank you and fair winds
Like the navigation brief Alan. It gives us an appreciation of your planned passage and any potential navigational challenges.
Thanks Ray. As you know, it was all about the currents.
I agreed
The barge near Rikers Island is the Vernon C. Bain Correctional Center, which was scheduled to be decommissioned this past November, according to the Wikipedia article.
The introductory navigation brief is a brilliant addition to your video. I'd like it done every time as it gives me a sense of place. Situational awareness is the buzz word. Great stuff. Safe sailing.
Glad you enjoyed it! I will include more of them moving forward
Hopefully realized that what he called the Hudson is actually the East River (it's to the east of Manhattan)
Fantastic video! Loved the comedy intro 😂
We had the pleasure to sail onboard a catamaran from Maine to Virginia in 2017 and especially enjoyed our stay in Port Washington. It was interesting to see our skipper planning the whole transit through the East River, because he, like you, was concerned about the currents. What we didn't expect was to get into a control by the Coast Guard. They actually wondered what a German sailing catamaran was doing in NYC, but were really nice and told us about the anchoring area right behind the Statue of Liberty, where we stayed for the night.
Your whole east coast leg just keeps refreshing memories of this awesome time we had in the States. Thank you, Alan!
I'm enjoying these passages far more than I thought I would.
The barge is a prison with 800 men in it. It is the Vernon C. Bain Correctional Center.
They should build a boat..
Alan, this is SO much fun, seeing Manhattan from the water! As far as the reliability of the Sailpro, I have the same engine and its been bullet proof for 4 years. My mechanic tells me that the biggest issue with these little 4 strokes is how you handle and use the fuel ( because of how easily the tiny carb jets clog). His advice: Always use non ethanol gas, try to top off the fuel can frequently to cut down on water condensation inside the empty can, always drain the carburetor bowl if you aren't using the motor for more than a few days, keep a spare fuel hose with you on long journeys. That's a great little motor!
This is the first OB that I am happy with!
I know! These Tohatsu's are so well made with a simple, proven, robust design. They also just sip gas, amazing how little fuel you are using to push a fully loaded ocean sailboat. The only downside is the single cylinder motors are a bit noisy. With my boat there is a sweet spot (about 2/3 throttle) where the boat is just a tad past hull speed. Pushing it harder than that really increases the noise with little improvement in speed. @@RoversAdventure
@@stephencifka4629 Absolutely, about 1/3 to 1/2 throttle and the engine is so quite.
Big city of dreams! Thank you for this exciting channel!!
Thank you for watching.
New York, New York, a city so nice, they named it, two times. Thanks for the videos!
lol
My wife and I did that route in reverse about 30 years ago with a 21 foot Florida Bayhen and a 4hp Evinrude. No big deal. Hell’s gate had some interesting swirls, but we easily motored right through them.
Thanks for sharing
Interesting to see you go under the Throgs Neck Bridge, my old stomping ground as a kid. I lived on the bank of that bridge and watched it being built. By the way it is "Throgs Neck" Allen! :)
I know, lol
That's the Vernon C. Bain prison barge, was overflow for rikers for years.
One long, three short and WR2 is underway for another adventure … thanks for another fun video!
My pleasure!
Now this was fun to watch. Thanks, and i love seeing the navigation.
I'll try to incorporate more of the Nav into future videos
Alan you always make everything look so easy.
Thanks
Looks like a great adventure, thank you.
I am looking forward to following your journey.
Welcome aboard!
That horn made the day!
Pretty funny Alan,,,the correct pronunciation is Throggs Neck (Th as a lislp)…love the senic trip…
I navigated the tides and currents correctly but got the names all messed up lol. Thanks
I did this route last May for the first time. Truly a bucket list experience.
Loved the navigation information - so interesting and gives a sense of exactly where you are and what’s ahead and behind you - really love the visual this provides. Thanks again for another great video! 🧭
Thanks again for watching and commenting Linda. It's much appreciated!
A magnificent navigation itinerary chosen, waiting for the next part of your route.
More to come!
9:00, google maps has that barge labeled as Vernon C. Bain Center (Prison)
Thanks for the brief Alan,it just explains everything.
Very welcome
Your New York City video was terrific and definitely in keeping with all your other videos. It made me look at my freeloading past and realize how much I look forward to your next video and finally pay the piper for the enjoyment you provide. I am now a happy patron of $10.00 per month. I wish it could be more.
Awesome! Thank you! And that is very generous of you!
Having been to NYC in 2015, it was great to have your perspective, Alan, from a nautical point of view. I'm sure many of us are anticipating your next video.
Next weeks video will show more of the landmarks.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for this!
Amazing what you have been able to see already in this very first part of your global circumnavigation. Congratulations
Thank you very much!
Thanks Allen. I did the East River a couple summers ago - first heading north (to Newport), then south home (Baltimore). I did a lot of filming but yours is sooo much better. Can't wait to see your trip through Hell Gate!
It's always a challenge to film when you are solo and trying to keep the boat safe. Thanks
I did this exact same route last august 22 solo sailing my boat to Sandy Hook. It is very exciting when you start the passage under the Throgs neck Bridge, you have to make sure you timed it right. Cheers, Richard
Absolutely. Are you located at Sandy Hook?
@@RoversAdventure no, this trip took place last summer 2022. I am in the Caribbeans right now, more precisely in Martinique. I am planning to get back home in Montreal next year. Have a wonderful trip and be prudent. Cheers Richard
Watch out for big current after the last bridge into the river 😮👍🏼
I have crossed the Atlantic, sailed all over the Caribbean/Atlantic. Sailing the East River under the Brooklyn Bridge thru Hell Gate to Providence RI is a ton of fun, one of my favorite sails. I have done it at night aswell it is amazing. Liberty Landing good Marina as well. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
Thanks for sharing!
I've never actually sailed up past Manhattan out towards the Newark Bay area.
The currents you described going past Manhattan are quite powerful and the sail isn't really an option, as compared to leave Port Washington and going into the sound and out that way. I imagine for the folks who keep their boats in Jersey City or other NJ areas that's a more common sail.
The freighter traffic though is going to be significantly higher as you go past the Port of Newark.
Alan - sorry, but you're entering the East River - the Hudson is on the West side of Manhattan
The video has large titles superimposed correcting this. I caught it in the edit but was unable to correct the audio.
Enjoying your videos Alan. Please trim the wire ties on the bottom of the solar collector before you poke your eye.
I keep forgetting bit I will before heading out on Atlantic this summer
I like the Navigational planning. Dose navionics show the currents around NY? I know it does in the English Channel but it doesn't down lower part if Portugal and Spain. It doesn't throughout the Gibraltar Strait either. I was surprised that it didn't around Gibraltar. So many currents there that you need to know when crossing.
Yes it does a pretty good job with the currents on the whole East Coast of the US
Nice video Alan, last time I went through there it was at night...wouldn't recommend it!
Now that's forging your own adventure for sure!
Don't make the mistake of heading out of the Hudson River into the Atlantic with a strong outflow current. You might end out farther in the Atlantic and unable to power back with a small motor. Don't ask me how I know this.
Lol. Sounds like you had an adventure.
You had me confused for a minute when you went past Hell Gate into the Hudson River. Actually you were passing the mouth the Harlem River, still in the East River, and would continue in the East River until you pass Governors Island into the Hudson River. On the east side of the Hudson River at Governors Island you will see the Statue of Liberty, which is in New Jersey. As I was writing this comment I noticed you later corrected your error. Very challenging navigation in this area. Good luck.
You will see all that on the next video.
Barge is part of the prison.
I hope you're not going to leave us in suspense too long!
I would never do that!
The Dutch called Hell gate 'Spuyten Divel' (i.e. Spitting Devil).
I wish they kept that name.
Ya, they are prison barges...there were 3 of them when i was there...
Less "bad guys" in NY these days lol.
Love your vids, just curious, do you get lonely sailing by yourself all the time. My wife would divorce me in a heartbeat if I left her home while I sailed the world by myself. 🤣 Always wanted to ask you.
I understand what you are saying. It's not easy but Mrs Rover is not interested in sailing. I will cover this dynamic at some point in the future.
What kind of navigation device is this?
It's an inexpensive Samsung tablet loaded with Navionics
Actualy Alan, you are not in the Hudson river. You are transiting the East river. The Hudson river is on the west side of manhattan.
The video has a large superimposed correction shown twice.
wish your videos were more like 20 minutes to 30 minutes long.
I will see what I can do. Another fella told me that he felt that they should be shorter but I agree with you.
there is a fine line i think on attention span we are enjoying life through your eyes, and what a life it is so far.@@RoversAdventure
You may be in need of reading glasses, based on various place name mistakes.
The video has a large superimposed correction shown twice.
Throgs Neck
The "Th" sound is like the beginning of the word throw. Then the rest of the word "rogs is like you said "the way you pronounce frog. I enjoy your content. Cheers, Rodney
Yeah, mispronounced Throgs Neck, but very few get “Hell Gate” right. It’s usually mispronounced Hells Gate.
Unfortunately you have identified the rivers incorrectly
