Great to see WR2 settling into a groove with the Mk lll doing its thing so capably. The cabin is such a bright and cheerful place to be … I imagine that at times you have to pinch yourself and say this happy little ship was born of an idea and my own two hands! Rovers the world over are celebrating your success! Hold fast! ⛵️🇨🇦⚓️🌞
Hi Alan, I’m very impressed by how well maintained, clean and organized Wave Rover is when you are under way. I believe keeping a tidy boat helps with a positive mental status on those long passages. Fair winds my friend. Jon
Excellent 💯 Wave Rover is really handling the seas well👍She doesn't seem to have as much as a roll side to side. She seems to counter a bit sooner so you stay a bit more level. Seems to have more room inside also. The hull goes straight to ceiling with no small deck along the side. Nice and bright also👍Yet She is smaller than WR1!! Stay safe Alan and enjoy your adventure to the fullest😁This is no dress rehearsal 💁👍👍🙏
But Alan didn’t you hear? You need 40+ feet and $100k to cross oceans! 😂 Fine work and an inspiration as always while I slowly build my Paradox micro cruiser “Rebel” Looking forward through the port light was reminiscent of Roger Taylor in MingMing!
The Gulf Stream is an amazing phenomenon. Two or three knots might not sound like much, but it’s a large percentage of boat speed for a 21ft’r. The critical concept is that it is added to the top line, not the bottom. By that I mean that it is added to speed even when the boat is sailing at top speed. Adding 3Kn to the top speed is the equivalent of a few kilowatts of power. To put that in perspective consider how much more a 21ft sailboat that could sustain that speed would cost -or any sailboat for that matter, or any boat that gets it’s power from the environment, or even a boat sailing that range with fossile fuel. Speaking of the the environment, the Gulf Stream also carries so much thermal energy that most of the wind Rover is sailing in is produced by the stream.
@@RoversAdventure You are welcome! Thanks for posting the real experience. Without it, wonders of the world are indestinguishable from lies. I love your note that the Gulf Stream is so powerfull that just wandering out slightly into an eddy turns hard sailing into zero SOG! Think of the poor preGPS sailors trying to navigate by dead reckoning and sextant. They had to learn to sail by thermometer!
Wonderful! Your thoughts on how she compares to the Contessa 26 would be interesting. Have you noticed much difference in the daily miles covered? I'm guessing a battle between water line length vs lighter easier driven hull. Obviously the sloop rig would have an edge close hauled.
Superb Alan sailing ⛵️ keeps going .Amazing footage filming 🎥 Great adventure will be in history. Great boat and great sailor 👍 Good luck with the crossing..
It's a shame that these aren't realtime. I'm excited you've headed out into the ocean in your own boat, but you're not off doing something completely different and these are just memories for you. Such is UA-cam. I loved the video through the portholes during the storm. What a satisfying feeling it must have been to be protected by the boat you built in the middle of the ocean in a storm. Life. Full vibrant life and feeling alive. I'm going to guess that the only thing that would have made it better would be to have had your wife along, but I'm sure her love was with you. When I'm warm and protected inside during some "bad weather", I frequently think of Francisco d'Anconia being at Hank Reardon's house and thanking Reardon for protecting him from the harsh weather outside. It was a great scene of two men sharing an understanding of the nature of life and how honest people can enjoying sharing their accomplishments to make it better. Or something like that. Anyway, this was a great video. Thank you for sharing. Fair winds in your mighty boat.
Great sailing video, Alan! Also loving the seagoing carnivore diet tips/ideas. :) So by now you know, or can at least pontificate from experience, I imagine ;) - is the new Rover a huge improvement over the Contessa 1st Gen Rover? If so, is it mostly due to hull shape, or junk rig - or both? Is she obviously faster? More sea kindly? Etc, etc... EDIT: I see in other comments that you will be addressing these things later. Thanks! :)
It looks like you have your EPIRB mounted inside. As a solo sailor think about using a rapid ditch express bag on the outside. Could be the difference between life and death in a catastrophic situation.
I am considering learning to sail. I'm 44, would you say that is too old to gain the experience to be able to make a trip like this? Would you recommend doing the ASA courses to learn the skills?
Wow I miss my junk schooner. Building another one right now! I’m curious how often you need to go on the foredeck? I’m a fan of the non cluttered look.
How well do you sleep with all the noises of rope work or groaning sounds being around? Do you get 8 hours in a row…..or do you break it up into segments?
@@RoversAdventure ……I am following your progress. It’s very exciting to view. At my age, adventures are not going to approach yours……so keep us landsmen intrigued.

Raw footage of what it’s really like at sea, just what we crave for. Thanks for sharing Alan.

Crave is an understatement! It's soooooo awesome!

Hello Skipper, thanks for sharing this adventure! What an awesome episode! Thank you Wave Rover,, you're a fine ship ⛵😊
Happy to see you enjoying the ocean, great reward for your hard work!
I'm very fortunate to be able to do this
Great shots tbrough the ports.wave rover chugging along stunningly. Nice and fast miles going by. Looks quite comfortable and easy..easy is good.
I've never been so well rested and relaxed as I was on this passage.
Beauty! Sailing in 'The Stream' is like eating at a big buffet. Ya never know what's coming next.
So true
Your boat is always so ship shape under way!
Love watching this so much - think I’d take a miss on the breakfast though lol
Lol. You are not the first to make such a comment about the food

I'm planning a good review video after WR arrives in the Azores

What are your storm tactics? Curious as to how you would handle unsailable conditions in a catboat... Not hoving to etc... Love the videos :)
Tactics coming up in the next few episodes
I can see a cookbook in your future Alan. Publish one and sell it here….autographed of course.
Lol. It would be a very short cook book
Real sailing..low tech ..adventure
The smaller and simpler the boat, the bigger the adventure
Is this live or other, I thought you said May 24? What is the air temperature? Best of luck, I rode on the last ride and enjoying this one.
Nice sailing! I presume that is your drogue in the big black bag in the deck?
3x 10L fuel containers
@@RoversAdventure can't fit them inside? Don't want them inside?
Some manual "wipers" on the front portholes wouldn't go astray. Like on the early motorcars.
What was the calendar date when you departed? How close did you pass by Bermuda?
Hold the camera even lower for the sea state perspective..
Great video!
Thanks
I'm very intrigued by your boat. Nice craftsmanship! Do you use AIS or radar? What is your watch schedule like when resting?
I cover all that in future videos
Thanks for the update. Hope Debbie doesn’t affect you. Do you have a list of safety gear you carry?
I cover the gear in a few weeks

Read, research, watch videos of real sailors, and perhaps volunteer as crew at sailing clubs. 44 is not too old by far

I may have gone forward once a week at sea
@@RoversAdventure that’s amazing! Well done sir!
👏👏👏
... You have probably answered this question many a time, but why do you think the Junk Rig is better than other rigs?
Simple to operate and most importantly to reef. Ideal sail for a solo ocean sailor on a small boat

I sleep well but in short segments

Not easy

Stored data and active GPS
